Selena Gomez Goes Gangster In MTV EMA Promo

‘People know who the eff I is,’ the show’s host raps in a video for next month’s MTV Europe Music Awards. By James Montgomery Selena Gomez When Selena Gomez served as MTV News’ special correspondent at the Video Music Awards Pre-Show in August, she was polite, professional and, as far as we can tell, did not utter a single profanity (she did get kissed by her boyfriend, Justin Bieber , though). But in preparation for her hosting duties at next month’s MTV EMA , she’s decided to change things up a bit, ditching that good-girl image and going hard. At least judging by a brand-new promo for the show, that is. Gomez ties on a bandana and throws on a flannel (only top button buttoned, of course) in the new spot, which spoofs her squeaky-clean image and features the demure actress/singer spitting some (sorta-profane) rhymes. It opens with her in full-blown princess regalia, sitting before a vanity and proclaiming to her reflection ” Finally, I get to host the EMAs … wow!” All of sudden, her thugged-out alter ego appears on the other side of the mirror, tells Selena to “shut her face,” and then launches into a few bars, rapping, “Who else better than me to be hosting the show/ People know who the eff I is/ I’m a pro/ The right time and place for me to be/ Yeah, I’ll say it/ Congratulations to me!” Gangster Gomez (or, as she puts it, “The S-E-L-E-N-A to the Gomez”), then gets all Kanye confessional on the mic, rapping that “Sh–‘s crazy growing up in this industry/ I was still a baby when I hustled up into the scene” and then drops what sounds very much like a solid F-bomb too. Like we said, she goes hard. Of course, the whole thing is a joke — according to a message at the beginning of the spot, “Some of the Selenas in this video are fictional. Any similarities to the actual Selena are purely coincidental” — but, as MTV’s Buzzworthy blog points out, her hip-hop makeover does present a rather unique opportunity for Gomez: Now, perhaps she can drop a mixtape with Shawty Mane, a.k.a. The clip even features a little something called “the Wall of Doubt,” which uses real, occasionally negative headlines that have been printed about the singer. But her favorite scene, as she told MTV News, is one where she looks super glammed up in a massive gown. “There’s different sides of me, and that whole outfit was more for all the freeing aspect,” she explained. “Like, there’s all these different sides of you, and that was the free-spirit side of me. That’s one of my favorite shots in the video. It keeps coming back to my hair everywhere.” However, the girl in that shot doesn’t tell Clarkson’s full story. “I think there’s that free-spirit side of me, and then there’s that feisty performer in me,” she continued. “Then there’s the funny side of me. I mean, obviously you have to be funny to have a big giant wall of doubt with actual headlines of your life on the wall. It’s a little fun, a little feisty.” The lead single from her October release, Stronger, was a late addition. “It was actually the last song we recorded, and we had already finished it up,” she said of “Mr. Know It All.” “That song came out of nowhere. And luckily it did, because everybody fell in love with it. “I think why I was attracted to it was, first of all, every girl has probably dated that guy, and also just in work life, I’ve known a lot of those people — especially in this industry,” she continued. “And people that try and pigeonhole you. After being deprived of rap femininity for a few years, it seems that women are once again a hot topic in the hip-hop conversation. Take Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” one-year anniversary show , for instance. Not only is Trina making an appearance, but in two separate pre-show fan polls, Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim are leading otherwise male-dominated categories. Minaj is currently leading for Best “RapFix Live” Freestyle , and the Queen Bee is the leading vote-getter in the Best “RapFix” Moment poll. It’s especially interesting considering that the two ladies were tangled in one of the biggest rap beefs of the year as well. Maino knows both Kim and Nicki, and when he appeared on Sway’s Shade 45 morning radio show, he broke down the talents of both. “I told her years ago that if I believed in any new female, I really felt like she actually had it because she rapped very feminine, she had a lot of style with her,” Maino said of his early interactions with Nicki. “I saw her coming years ago, way before her name was even Nicki Minaj. I saw her actually being able to do it.” When Maino first came into the game with his debut single “Rumors,” Lil’ Kim was an early supporter, helping him navigate his way through the industry. “Kim is legendary, man; household name that’s gonna last forever,” he said. “I just don’t think that she maintained the work ethic to maintain what we wanted her to have, and that’s to be in the spotlight continuously. Some people are not built for that 10-year run of nonstop working, like a Jay-Z.” The “Hi Hater” rapper said that, with today’s fans, the only thing that matters is current hits, and while Kim has a powerful catalog, she needs some new bangers to return her to rap prominence. “She took time off. If you haven’t heard by now, the illustrious men and women of the porn industry are shook right now after finding out one of their own caught the HIV. The pornography trade association that broke the news that an adult film performer has tested HIV-positive released a statement Tuesday noting that “the incident occurred outside of California” and that “there is nothing to suggest that the occurrence has affected the Los Angeles-based industry.” The Canoga Park-based Free Speech Coalition learned that the performer had tested HIV-positive on Saturday and the group called for a moratorium on filming Sunday night, according to the statement. It was not clear Tuesday how long the temporary suspension of filming would last. “This moratorium should remain in place until primary reports of any exposure are confirmed. In the event of the necessity for first- and second-generational testing, a list of any individuals that may have been exposed will be compiled and the moratorium will then be evaluated by our medical and legal advisers, as well as industry stakeholders,” the statement said. It was not clear how many porn studios have suspended filming. “Producers, agents and performers are cooperating in order to uphold health and safety protocols,” the statement said. Among the studios that have suspended production is Van Nuys-based Evil Angel, according to spokeswoman and former performer Tricia Devereaux. “The moratorium will last as long as needed to feel confident we won’t be shooting anyone who was exposed,” Devereaux said in a Tuesday email. “Once that ends, there will still be people who haven’t been cleared yet who will have to wait before they can perform.” Almost immediately after the news broke out, it was followed by rumors that “the performer” in question was Brian Pumper .
