JetBlue Issues Steven Slater Statement, Vouchers for Flyers

After circulating an internal memo that made it clear JetBlue did not think of Steven Slater as a hero , the airline has now released a public statement. The light-hearted document reads: Sometimes the weird news is about us… It wouldn’t be fair for us to point out absurdities in other corners of the industry without acknowledging when it’s about us. Well, this week’s news certainly falls into that category. Perhaps you heard a little story about one of our flight attendants? While we can’t discuss the details of what is an ongoing investigation, plenty of others have already formed opinions on the matter. Like, the entire Internet. (The reason we’re not commenting is that we respect the privacy of the individual. People can speak on their own behalf; we won’t do it for them.) While this episode may feed your inner Office Space , we just want to take this space to recognize our 2,300 fantastic, awesome and professional Inflight Crewmembers for delivering the JetBlue Experience you’ve come to expect of us. You can’t make this shtick up. JetBlue has also issued a $100 voucher to those that were aboard Slater’s flight. Meanwhile, the largest flight attendants union around in existence is coming to the defense of Slater – literally! A day after he pleaded not guilty to a number of charges that could land him in prison, the Association of Flight Attendants says: “We want to advance the profession no matter what. Sometimes in order to do that we must help people who may not necessarily be members.” With that sentiment/goal in mind, the AFA has offered to fund Slater’s legal team, something he might have to consider. After all, the fed-up employee’s action could land him in prison for seven years. Wouldn’t it be depressing if Steve Slater spent more time behind bars than Lindsay Lohan ?

Rachel Maddow Edits ‘Factor’ Video to Make Bill O’Reilly Look Racist

Rachel Maddow on Friday highly-edited a video from the previous evening’s “O’Reilly Factor” in order to make the Fox News host look racist. For some background, Bill O’Reilly wrote a syndicated column Friday in which he chastized Maddow and David Letterman for “without a shred of evidence” claiming on CBS’s “Late Show” Tuesday that FNC intentionally runs stories about “scary black people” in order to frighten white folks into voting for conservatives. Maddow responded by calling this “bullpucky,” and presented video “evidence” from “Factor” programs to prove that this indeed is what Fox does. Unfortunately, in the most damning clip, Maddow’s minions conveniently edited out that O’Reilly was referring to a recent Gallup poll about how blacks and whites have differing views of President Obama. Ironically, this came moments after Maddow scolded O’Reilly for airing the edited version of former USDA official Shirley Sherrod on his July 19 program (videos follow with transcripts and commentary): RACHEL MADDOW, HOST: This time, the case against me is in his nationally syndicated column which I`m sure is read by millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of people. The headline is, quote, “Only far-left loons scared of Fox News.” Guess who the loon is? Yes. Talking about me on David Letterman`s show this week, Mr. O`Reilly says, quote, “Speaking with far-left MSNBC news commentator, Rachel Maddow on his program, Dave listened as she put forth the preposterous theory that wants to frighten white Americans by reporting negatively about black Americans.” “In the past, paranoid, dishonest rants like that would have been dismissed as fringe-speak. But not anymore. Without a shred of evidence, a guest on Letterman`s “Late Show,” which by the way, gets trounced in the ratings by Fox News Channel every night, defines an entire news organization as a racist enterprise and Letterman goes along.” Mr. O`Reilly`s repeated insistence that must be right because Fox has high ratings is a many-splendored thing particularly because this week – if you believe Mr. O`Reilly, this week means we`re all wrong and only sharksploitation(ph) is right. But there is something else going on here that isn`t just an ad populum fallacy about ratings or an ad hominem collateral swipe at the lovely creature that is the loon. It is something stupid, something stupid enough that it doesn`t even get dressed up in Latin phrasing. It`s him saying that there`s no evidence to back up my claim that Fox News consistently runs stories it says are news, but that nobody else really covers, stories that are ginned-up, exaggerated, caricatured, in some cases, just flat-out made-up scare stories designed to make white people feel afraid of black people, designed to make it seem like black people, or in some cases, immigrants are threatening white people and taking what is rightfully theirs. You may not like that diagnosis of what Fox has been up to, but to say there`s no evidence, not a shred of evidence, as he said, that`s bullpucky. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: Speaking at an NAACP event in March, Department of Agriculture official Shirley Sherrod was caught on tape saying something very disturbing. Seems a white farmer in Georgia had requested government assistance from Ms. Sherrod. Wow. Well, that is simply unacceptable and Ms. Sherrod must resign immediately. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Of course, the Shirley Sherrod story ended up being exposed as total bullpucky, manufactured by nifty video editing. Mr. O`Reilly had to apologize for that statement. But it`s not like the Shirley Sherrod story stands alone. Readers are encouraged to remember her comment “exposed as total bullpucky, manufactured by nifty video editing.” Also, if this was an example of Fox trying to scare white people, why did O’Reilly apologize the next day? Not every member of the news media that broadcast the original Sherrod video clip issued an on air apology like O’Reilly, but I digress: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: The collapse of ACORN – that is the subject of this evening`s “Talking Points Memo.” Here`s the latest scandal. You`re not going to believe it. Because federal authorities have not done much policing of ACORN, two private citizens, James O`Keefe and Hannah Giles, launch an undercover sting investigation themselves. The two pose as a prostitute and a pimp and asked a number of ACORN officials to help them get housing for a prostitution enterprise. The latest sting was in California, where an ACORN employee engaged the young woman posing as a prostitute. ACORN is a tax-exempt organization that should immediately lose that status. And Attorney General Holder should begin an intense investigation. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Of course, the ACORN story ended up being exposed as total bullpucky, too, also manufactured by nifty video editing. Remember after the California attorney general looked into the full tapes and then arrested all those ACORN folks for those crimes that Bill O`Reilly showed them committing on tape? Yes, you don`t remember that? Me, neither, because it never happened. Bullpucky again. But still, very scary. Readers are encouraged to once again remember Maddow’s phrase here “total bullpucky, too, also manufactured by nifty video editing.” Secondly, that the far-left Jerry Brown chose not to prosecute ACORN employees by no means invalidates the corruption that was exposed at this organization or vindicates it. A Democrat-controlled Congress and a Democrat President have still not lifted the government ban on ACORN funding. Beyond this, the notion that O’Reilly reporting this matter was racially motivated is in itself racist. But Maddow and her ilk seem to miss this irony when they point such fingers at others: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: A guy like Van Jones who is a friend of the president, and he comes in and he`s a hardcore Marxist. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He`s not a hardcore Marxist. O`REILLY: He is. He admits it. All I keep hearing is from people like Eugene Robinson who traffics in racism every time you turn around. Once again, the idea that reporting on Van Jones was to scare white people is pathetic. Are all reports concerning black people involved in wrong-doing racist? As such, this was another tremendously weak point by Maddow in no way proving O’Reilly was trying to scare white people. But here’s the best part: O’REILLY: White Americans don`t like the huge expansion of the federal government. They also oppose the big spending increases that the president has imposed. It`s simple. White Americans fear government control. They don`t want the feds telling them what to do and they don`t want a bankrupt nation. For decades, African-Americans have supported a bigger federal government so it can impose social justice. The vast majority of blacks want money spent to level the playing field, to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Black people want white people`s money. They want to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts. But remember, Mr. O`Reilly says there is not a shred of evidence that Fox News hypes stories about scary black people taking white people`s stuff. I am not interested in playing cable news insult ping pong with Mr. O`Reilly. But as much as he keeps insisting that I`m no one worth arguing with, that I`m an uber-leftist – he called me that in his column, and a loon twice now. And a slightly larger percentage of one percent of the population watches his show than the proportion of one percent of the population that watches my show, for all he complains about how unimportant I am, my criticism scares white people on purpose to politically benefit conservatives, damn the consequences for the country, that criticism appears to have struck a nerve over at Fox. It appears to have gotten under Mr. O`Reilly`s skin. Good. Well, not so fast, Rach, for why didn’t you provide the full context of that last report by O’Reilly? Here is the unedited “Talking Points Memo” from Thursday. Notice just how much different this really is from the highly-edited version Maddow dishonestly showed her viewers: O’REILLY: Hi, I’m Bill O’Reilly. Thanks for watching us tonight. Black and white Americans differ over President Obama. That is the subject of this evening’s “Talking Points Memo”. A new Gallup poll says 88 percent of African-Americans continue to support President Obama, but just 38 percent of white Americans feel the president is doing a good job. That is a 50 point differential in the president’s job approval rating, which is stunning. So what is going on? Let’s take the white situation first. According to the polls, most white Americans don’t like the huge expansion of the federal government. They also oppose the big spending increases that the president has imposed. It’s simple. White Americans fear government control. They don’t want the Feds telling them what to do. And they don’t want a bankrupt nation. That attitude was on display in Missouri this week when 71 percent of the voters approved a state statute blocking the federal government from forcing them to buy health insurance. 71 percent said no to that. Since Obamacare is the centerpiece of the president’s domestic strategy so far, you can see he’s in some trouble. But black America has a totally different view. For decades, African- Americans have supported a bigger federal government, so it can impose social justice. A vast majority of blacks want money spent to level the playing field, to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts, and to provide better education and health care at government expense. So the African-American voter generally loves what President Obama is doing. As for Hispanic-Americans, 54 percent now support Mr. Obama but that is down nine points since April. The social justice component is there as well. There’s no question that there are now two Americas. The minority community continues to believe that society is not completely fair to them. And they want a huge government apparatus to change that. And while the white community may sympathize with the minority situation, they apparently believe that more harm than good is being done to the country with the cost of social justice programs. My own belief is that President Obama is well intentioned, but if the wild spending continues, this country will be gravely damaged. As far as social justice is concerned, strict oversight on fair rules, but not the imposition of expensive entitlements is the answer. The USA is the strongest country on earth because of self reliance and the industry of honest, hard working people, who don’t want to be told how to live. Independence and self-reliance is what has made this country great, powerful and generous. And that’s the Memo. As such, O’Reilly was commenting about a Gallup survey just released Tuesday with the title, “Blacks and Whites Continue to Differ Sharply on Obama.” By the end of his “Memo,” he was even crediting Obama with being “well intentioned.” Sound “scary” to you? As for Gallup, here’s what it reported: President Obama’s job approval rating averaged 88% among blacks and 38% among whites in July, a 50-percentage-point difference that has been consistent in recent months but is much larger than in the initial months of the Obama presidency. Obama’s job approval ratings among blacks, whites, and Hispanics in July are all at their lowest levels to date, although the overwhelming majority of blacks still approve. Maybe Maddow should call the Gallup folks racist, too. Regardless, Maddow and her minions completely removed this context from the video they edited thereby dramatically altering what O’Reilly said.  Isn’t that just as bad as what the anonymous person that sent the excerpted Sherrod video to Andrew Breitbart did? Maybe more importantly, isn’t this actually worse than what Fox and every other news outlet did with the Sherrod video, for none of them were involved in the editing. In Maddow’s case, her own staff edited out major portions of O’Reilly’s opening remarks on Thursday completely changing the meaning of his words. This MSNBC host should certainly not be pointing fingers at others for bullpucky manufactured by nifty video editing when she and her staff are doing the very same thing.  With this in mind, maybe Maddow on Monday should play the entire video for her audience and apologize to O’Reilly. Readers are advised to not hold their breath.

Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered « OOO

A group of influential conservative members of the behemoth social media site Digg.com have just been caught red-handed in a widespread campaign of censorship, having multiple accounts, upvote padding, and deliberately trying to ban progressives. An undercover investigation has exposed this effort, which has been in action for more than one year. “The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I’ll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives.” -phoenixtx (aka vrayz) One bury brigade in particular is a conservative group that has become so organized and influential that they are able to bury over 90% of the articles by certain users and websites submitted within 1-3 hours, regardless of subject material. Literally thousands of stories have already been artificially removed from Digg due to this group. When a story is buried, it is removed from the upcoming section (where it is usually at for ~24 hours) and cannot reach the front page, so by doing this, this one group is removing the ability of the community as a whole to judge the merits or interest of these stories on their own (in essence: censoring content). This group is known as the Digg “Patriots”. DIGG PATRIOTS A group of nearly one hundred conservatives have banded together on a Yahoo Group called Digg Patriots (DP), and a companion site at coRanks to issue bury orders and discuss strategies to censor Digg and other social media websites. DP was founded on 21 May 2009. Since then, over 40,000 posts have been logged at a steady rate of around 3000-4000 per month. The “Patriots” Network on coRank is a tool to submit Diggs to a group list as opposed to sending an e-mail every time. It also has some tools that make submitting to the list as easy as clicking on a bookmark. The DP membership includes the following Digg users (among others): added by: toyotabedzrock

Gold Coin Sellers Angered by New Tax Law Amendment Slipped Into Health Care Legislation Would Track, Tax Coin and Bullion Transactions

Those already outraged by the president's health care legislation now have a new bone of contention — a scarcely noticed tack-on provision to the law that puts gold coin buyers and sellers under closer government scrutiny. The issue is rising to the fore just as gold coin dealers are attracting attention over sales tactics. Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will amend the Internal Revenue Code to expand the scope of Form 1099. Currently, 1099 forms are used to track and report the miscellaneous income associated with services rendered by independent contractors or self-employed individuals. Coin Dealers Flipping Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Form 1099s will become a means of reporting to the Internal Revenue Service the purchases of all goods and services by small businesses and self-employed people that exceed $600 during a calendar year. Precious metals such as coins and bullion fall into this category and coin dealers have been among those most rankled by the change. This provision, intended to mine what the IRS deems a vast reservoir of uncollected income tax, was included in the health care legislation ostensibly as a way to pay for it. The tax code tweak is expected to raise $17 billion over the next 10 years, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Taking an early and vociferous role in opposing the measure is the precious metal and coin industry, according to Diane Piret, industry affairs director for the Industry Council for Tangible Assets. The ICTA, based in Severna Park, Md., is a trade association representing an estimated 5,000 coin and bullion dealers in the United States. “Coin dealers not only buy for their inventory from other dealers, but also with great frequency from the public,” Piret said. “Most other types of businesses will have a limited number of suppliers from which they buy their goods and products for resale.” added by: im1mjrpain

Eminem, Rihanna Top New Ultimate Chart

‘Love the Way You Lie’ is #1 on BigChampagne’s chart, which factors Internet popularity into its rankings. By Kyle Anderson Eminem Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images For half a century, the Billboard Hot 100 has been thought to be the most accurate bellwether of what the biggest songs are. Every week, it takes into account radio airplay and singles sales, puts those numbers into a complicated formula and determines which tracks are becoming ubiquitous and which ones are falling off. But in the modern era, a song’s airplay and sales numbers don’t necessarily tell the whole story, as songs are streamed on YouTube, watched on MTV, posted to Facebook, downloaded through countless blogs and searched for on Google. With that in mind, BigChampagne — an organization that has spent years tracking music on the Internet — has come up with the Ultimate Chart , a listing that synthesizes the statistics from all the various places you can hear music and determines which songs are truly the biggest in the virtual world. The chart itself is the result of hard statistics and human analysis. “The Ultimate Chart is a chart for the 21st century, based on a scalable technology platform developed over more than ten years,” reads the introduction on the site. “We collect billions of points of data, online and off. Our machines are very clever but our analysts are too. Real people grade the computers’ work to ensure accuracy. We collect more relevant information from more sources than anyone ever has, by our count.” The big winners on the new chart include Eminem and Rihanna , whose “Love the Way You Lie” (from Eminem’s Recovery ) is listed as the #1 song, just ahead of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” (which has had a stranglehold on the Billboard chart for more than a month). Shakira also fares extremely well, as her “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” comes in at #3. That track is an excellent example of how a song can transcend the normal parameters of the other chart, because while the radio airplay for Shakira’s tune wasn’t great, it was still streamed online and searched for around the world due to its connection to the World Cup. A lot of the usual suspects are still represented on the Ultimate Chart. For example, Justin Bieber rules just as he does on the Hot 100, though his highest-charting tune on the Ultimate Chart remains “Baby,” even though “Somebody to Love” is finishing higher on the Billboard version. It wouldn’t be shocking if “Baby” earned that spot due to the surge in YouTube views of the video. Bieber’s YouTube rival Lady Gaga is also well represented on the Ultimate Chart, with three songs (“Alejandro,” “Bad Romance” and “Telephone”) all in the top 20. The Ultimate Chart also tracks the most ubiquitous artists based on airplay, streams, searches and social-network followers and friends. Eminem tops that chart as well, followed by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Shakira and Drake, which is a deadly accurate assessment of the pop music landscape. Chris Isaak Being Considered For ‘American Idol’ Judge’s Chair

Fellow crooner Harry Connick Jr. is also rumored to be in the running to replace Simon Cowell. By Gil Kaufman Chris Isaak Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Auditions for the 10th season of “American Idol” already kicked off in Nashville last week, but there has still been no word on who will replace departed lead judge Simon Cowell come January. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the acerbic Brit’s chair could be filled by one of a trio of American musicians whose experience in the pop culture machine has given them plenty of expertise on what it takes to make it. Though they’ve been typically tight-lipped about who might be in the running, the Fox network has reportedly been set on finding a well-known music-industry figure to take over the lead chair, with names such as former Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola and Madonna manager Guy Oseary popping up in the rumor mill. But the Reporter said that it is “Wicked Game” singer Chris Isaak who has emerged as a leading contender after meeting with show runners twice so far in pursuit of the gig. The soft-spoken Isaak — who has also acted on shows such as “Cold Case” and “Smallville,” and hosted his Showtime series, “The Chris Isaak Show” — certainly has the industry background and camera-ready personality. But another crooner, past “Idol” mentor and amiable modern-swing singer Harry Connick Jr. , has also reportedly been considered. Though he’s publicly coveted the position and was “given the once-over” according to the Reporter, Poison singer and singer reality-show star Bret Michaels is said to be out of the running. “The Apprentice” boss Donald Trump has also reportedly lobbied for the job, though given his longtime association with NBC, the continued success of his signature show and his lack of music experience, he seems an unlikely choice. Adding to the tension, Cowell is casting around for judges for the launch of the U.S. version of his singing competition, “The X Factor,” and the long-simmering rivalry between “Idol” executive producer Simon Fuller and Cowell is said to have set off a tug-of-war over at least one desirable candidate that both shows are eyeing. A spokesperson for “Idol” could not be reached for comment at press time. Fox told the Reporter that no decision is imminent, but the network’s new entertainment chairman, Peter Rice, said he expects the new “Idol” judge to be in place by early September in order to take part in the audition process. Who do you think should replace Simon on “Idol?” Write your comments below. Related Photos Who Should Replace Simon Cowell On ‘American Idol’? Related Artists Chris Isaak

Sarah Palin Reacts To Levi Johnston And Bristol Palin’s Engagement

Former Alaska governor’s statement emphasizes daughter’s belief in ‘redemption and forgiveness.’ By Gil Kaufman Sarah Palin (file) Photo: Chip Somodevilla/ Getty Images You can bet things are going to be a bit tense at the reception. Just hours after the cover of this week’s Us Weekly was revealed — depicting a once-again engaged Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston — Bristol’s mother, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin weighed in on the surprise news. “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children,” Palin and snowmobiling husband Todd said in a statement that was read on the “Today” show on Wednesday morning (July 14). “Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” The not-so-subtle message of the statement appeared to diss to high school dropout Johnston, 20, the one-time Playgirl model and aspiring actor who went on a tear criticizing the Palin household after he and Bristol broke up in December 2008, two weeks after their son, Tripp, was born. Bristol told Us that the couple got engaged again two weeks ago, that she had forgiven Levi for his unkind words and that they had not alerted her mom to the news, a decision she said made her a little afraid. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” she admitted. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents. … It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she’ll jump onboard.” Abstinence advocate Bristol is pictured wearing all white on the cover and standing alongside Johnston, also dressed in white and holding Tripp. “Today” reported that no wedding date has been set yet, but that the young couple would like to tie the knot quickly, perhaps as soon as next month. Until then, they are reportedly living separately. What do you think of Sarah Palin’s statement? Tell us in comments below.

Will Mark Ruffalo Play The Hulk In ‘The Avengers’?

Actor is reportedly ‘in late-stage discussions’ to take over Edward Norton’s role in the comic book supergroup. By Kara Warner Mark Ruffalo Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic Hot on the heels of Marvel’s big announcement Monday that Edward Norton would not be reprising the role of Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” comes a report that studio head Kevin Feige and company have tapped Mark Ruffalo to take over the role. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily , Ruffalo is “now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of the Avengers ensemble.” Regarding the ensemble in question, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/ Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Feige’s statement seemed to hint that the production wanted more of a team player: ” ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble. … We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Whether Norton fit the bill is up for debate, but Ruffalo has often appeared in films as part of an ensemble or in various scene-stealing supporting roles (he was also an MTV Movie Awards nominee with “13 Going on 30” co-star Jennifer Garner for Best Musical Performance in 2005) and has a reputation within the industry for being very well-liked among his peers. When MTV News spoke with Ruffalo about the possibility of his taking on a comic book character or movie, the actor revealed he had been in talks to play Harvey Dent in “The Dark Knight,” calling it the “Godfather” of comic book movies. “[It] raises the bar on anything,” he said of “The Dark Knight.” “Nothing can touch it in that genre. It’s great filmmaking.” Ruffalo added that he wasn’t sure if tights or superhero garb were in his future, but that he’s open to the opportunity. “I don’t know if I’ll ever end up in that world,” Ruffalo told MTV News. “But I’d love to work with Christopher Nolan. He’s one of those directors you want to work with. He’s a great director.” What do you think of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Hills’ Girls Made ‘California Cool’ Fashionable Everywhere, Experts Say

Magazine editors weigh in on the West Coast style that Lauren Conrad and friends popularized. By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad Photo: Getty Images The ladies of a href=”http://www.mtv.com/shows/the_hills/season_6/series.jhtml”> “The Hills” have left their mark on pop culture. Not only were they ratings darlings, but these impeccably groomed princesses of SoCal inspired women to tune in and take notes on how to create their own California fairy tale. From their stylish jobs to their frequent shopping trips and club outings, LC, Kristin and their friends have been influencing viewers’ fashion for the past six seasons. “[The show] hyped a certain kind of California cool style that the rest of the world hadn’t seen,” Nylon digital director Faran Krentcil told MTV News. “One that combined cheap cotton dresses with Chanel bags, and stacked friendship bracelets alongside Tiffany jewelry. These were young women mixing their own favorite things with what fashion magazines (and the East Coast style establishment) told them was cool, and they had the same kind of influence that Nicole Richie’s boho-luxe style had.” Seventeen magazine’s entertainment director Carissa Rosenberg Tozzi emphasized the impact Lauren Conrad has had on women. “Every girl, no matter what age, anyone from 12-35 was practically emulating her style,” Tozzi told MTV News. “It landed her on the covers of magazines. Girls wanted to look like her, be her, dress like her. She was such an influence during the time she was on ‘The Hills.’ You couldn’t deny that she was a huge influence on pop culture. Everybody was talking about her style. She was the girl next door — that perfect combination people always say, girls want to be friends with her, guys want to date her. She just had it all.” “It popularized the mix-and-match movement that makes it OK to throw a Juicy Couture T-shirt underneath a Miu Miu blazer,” added Krentcil. “And though girls in New York City were doing this too, Lauren Conrad and her comrades were doing it with tons of color! Before ‘The Hills,’ it was kind of assumed that you should wear black with pops of color if you wanted to look sexy or cool. They gave more options — in colors that used to be for tropical drinks only, not dresses and shoes. And they made it ‘acceptable’ to buy a $300 T-shirt.” Fashion designer Richie Rich acknowledged the show’s impact on youth culture, but not so much on the fashion industry as a whole. “I think ‘The Hills’ was a fun impact fashion-wise on the youth of our culture,” Rich told MTV News. “I don’t really think it made a huge statement fashion-wise, other then rich girls shopping. I think it also proved that celebs just putting their names on products doesn’t always mean it’s fashion. I think the catfights were the highlight for sure!” Star magazine fashion and beauty director Tara Kraft said she is confident the ladies will continue to be major style and beauty influencers beyond the show’s run, particularly since several of them are now deeply involved in the industry. “Lauren Conrad not only designed her own line for Kohl’s, but was the face of Mark., Avon’s sister brand. She repped their beauty line and also collaborated on a line of accessories with the company,” Kraft pointed out. “Whitney Port is also a fashion designer. Her line Whitney Eve has become quite popular. Audrina Patridge was just tapped as a new face for the line Bongo; Kristin Cavallari was a model for the fashion line Op.” Tozzi equates the impact of “The Hills” to that of “Sex and the City.” “Their style really set trends,” she explained. “The difference between what they did and what ‘Sex and the City’ did: Nothing that [the ‘Hills’ girls] wore was so over the top; everything they wore was accessible. You never felt that the choices, the kind of clothes they wore would make you feel weird wearing them. You weren’t making some crazy statement; you were just sort of looking good. It was all about looking pretty and put together. ” So who is next in line to inherit the fashion-forward throne from the cast of “The Hills”? “I don’t know, I’m curious to see what is next,” Tozzi said. “There always will be a next.” What show will influence your style now that “The Hills” is ending? Talk about it in the comments. Join MTVNews.com on Tuesday, July 13, at 8 p.m. ET for a live stream from the red carpet of Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, where the stars will gather for “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending.” Then tune in for the series finale at 10 p.m. ET on MTV and “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending After Show” at 11.
