‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake A ‘Big Challenge,’ Director Says

‘I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film,’ Kenny Ortega tells ‘The Insider.’ By Terri Schwartz Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing” Photo: Getty Images Kenny Ortega has been tasked with remaking the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing,” and he knows you aren’t happy about it. The announcement earlier this week was met with seemingly universal backlash, especially in MTV News’ comment section. Commenter lisha.16 lashed out against Hollywood’s continued dependence on remakes, while Valerie Anne Devine pointed out that “Dirty Dancing” is “not broken therefore does not require a makeover.” In an interview with “The Insider,” Ortega said he was initially in the same boat. “Saying yes to this project was a really tough decision for me, and one that I wrestled with for a long time,” said the “This Is It” director, who was a choreographer on the original “Dirty Dancing.” “I had to be won over too.” So far, there’s no script or casting ideas set, just the idea to remake the movie first made famous by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. But “Dirty Dancing” is no stranger to reinvention. The movie inspired a successful Broadway musical as well as the 2004 box-office flop “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.” Ortega said his first step in creating this remake is to not try to top anything the original movie did. “We have a big challenge and a long road ahead of us,” Ortega said. “All I can say is that I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film.” That starts with not trying to find a way to replace Swayze and Grey. “They’re one of a kind, and they deserve to be called that,” he said. Ortega said he has been impressed with “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist Melanie Moore’s skills and told her live on the air that she has a role waiting for her in the film if she wants it. He also said that he would love to find a role for Grey in the remake if she’d want to be part of it. As for who should play male lead Johnny Castle, MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog suggested Ryan Gosling could be a pretty good choice. Ortega is no stranger to fans rebelling against remakes of ’80s dance flicks. He was originally attached to direct the upcoming “Footloose” remake before dropping out because he didn’t like the tone Paramount wanted for their modernized take. It will be interesting to see whether Ortega’s “Dirty Dancing” also gets updated to the present day with current popular dancing or if it maintains the 1960s setting and styles that the original had. Inside Monica & Shannon Brown’s Wedding! [VIDEO]

Read more:

As we previously reported, Monica and Shannon Brown’s second wedding ceremony went down last weekend. And though the couple secretly got married in private last year, the recent celebration included all their friends and family, like Ciara, Lala and Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine Dupri and LL Cool J. The usually private singer allowed only the Insider’s cameras, and host Kevin Frazier, into her wedding for an exclusive interview and sneak peek. I was watching the ceremony and you were talking to Shannon, what were you talking about? You couldn’t hear us, right? He asked me, was I his forever, and I answered. And a lot of other stuff, good stuff, I’m glad you couldn’t hear. What this what you dreamed of or did it exceed your expectations? It exceeded my expectations. I wanted it to be something that I would enjoy, but also our families. And I wanted us to be uplifted, uplifted in Christ, uplifted in family… And making sure everything feels good; somethings are just about the feeling and for it all to take place like that, I’m just excited… So many amazing things were happening here tonight. My 3-year-old son just literally takes over, which he does at home, so I was glad people got a chance to see how it really is, take a peek inside our lives and our love. That dress and that train! You had your hands full when you were coming down the aisle. What was that like, that moment, that walk? Because I saw you midway through, like “Whew!” The ‘whew!’ was looking at my husband. I didn’t think about the dress. I mean, I went to Paris. Stephen Rolland created my dress and my reception dress as well, and I cried when I first saw it, but once I saw my kids go down and I looked up and I saw him, I saw all my girlfriends, everybody that meant something to us was in one place. I was just overwhelmed so I’m glad because I didn’t think about this 50lb train that I was dragging behind me. I just had to take a deep breath, because I was really trying not to cry. Demi Lovato Talks Eating Disorder, Leaving ‘Sonny With A Chance’

‘For the past 10 years, I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food,’ Disney star confides in new ABC News interview. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: John Shearer/WireImage Demi Lovato surprised everyone when she quit her tour with the Jonas Brothers last fall to seek treatment for ” emotional and physical issues .” She recently opened up about those personal issues, which back then caused much speculation about exactly what ailed her, in a new interview with ABC News . Lovato also confirmed that she will no longer be starring in her TV show, “Sonny With a Chance.” “I’ve spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I’ve never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life afterwards,” she said. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.’ “I developed an eating disorder, and that’s kind of what I’ve been dealing with ever since. I was compulsively overeating when I was 8 years old,” she continued. “So, I guess, for the past 10 years, I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food.” Her eating disorder also gave way to self-mutilation. In the interview, which airs on ” Good Morning America ” and “20/20” on Friday, the Disney star says she began cutting herself at age 11. “It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body,” she told Robin Roberts. “I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself.” The emotional ups and downs came to a head last summer while on tour with the Jonas Brothers. “I was performing concerts on an empty stomach,” she said. “I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me.” She is referring to an incident in which Lovato reportedly got into a physical altercation with one of the dancers on the tour. An intervention was staged following that incident, and she entered treatment. “I take 100 percent, full responsibility. I feel horrible. [She] was my friend,” she said. “They sat me down and said, ‘You can’t live like this.’ ” She recalled that once she entered the facility, “For the first time in my life, I started to feel.” Her sister and her fans acted as her strength as she dealt with the issues she had kept quiet for a decade. “A picture of my little sister [Madison], on my little bulletin board, was one of the main things that kept me going,” she said. “I just kept thinking, ‘OK, set this example for your little sister,’ ” she explained. “The real reason why I’m sitting down with you is to open up the eyes of so many young girls, that it doesn’t have to be this way.” The same day the preview for the ABC News interview hit the Web, it was announced that Lovato would be leaving her Disney show, “Sonny With a Chance.” “It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music,” Lovato told People.com . “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended, but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.” “I don’t think going back to ‘Sonny’ would be healthy for my recovery,” she added. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.” A rep for the show confirms her decision and the network is supporting Lovato’s future endeavors, which include recording for Disney’s record label. “We respect Demi’s decision to focus full-time on her music and not immediately return to her acting career,” a rep explained. “She is a talented young woman and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Linkin Park Detail Ongoing Recovery Efforts In Haiti

Bassist Dave ‘Phoenix’ Farrell visits earthquake-ravaged country. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Audrey Kim Linkin Park’s Dave “Phoenix” Farrell in Haiti Photo: Insider Images More than a year has passed since an earthquake ravaged Haiti, and, as is sadly the case with disasters like this, the focus of the world has shifted elsewhere, despite the fact that the recovery effort is still very much ongoing. But one group who hasn’t forgotten about the Haitian people is Linkin Park , who, through their Music for Relief charity &#8212 and in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation &#8212 are working to bring light to the nation … literally. They’ve begun a program to build solar-powered lights in many displacement camps (which are home to more than 1 million Haitians), and last week, though they were set to film a video for their new single “Iridescent,” the band sent bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell down to Port-au-Prince to check on the progress. “I just got back from Haiti last night,” Farrell said on the Los Angeles set of “Iridescent.” “I had gone over there to check on what we had been working on with Music for Relief, in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation. We’ve basically been working to install some solar-powered lighting in some of the camps there … the camp in particular that we visited had 40,000 people … and no electricity. “So, at night, women and children are very susceptible to violence, rape, all kinds of really awful things, even when they’re doing something as simple as trying to go to use the latrines, the restrooms, et cetera,” Farrell continued. “We’ve been putting solar-powered lighting in strategic areas, and we’ve found that not only has that lowered the crime rate, but it’s given the camps a place where kids can go and play in the evenings, and, in addition to that, we have students studying and reading at the lights at night.” And though Farrell said that he was “amazed” by the resiliency and spirit of the Haitian people, he realizes that bringing the nation back from the brink is an ongoing process — one that’s going to take a lot longer than most could imagine. But, with his bandmates, the U.N. and his fellow musicians at his side, Farrell is confident that, eventually, Haiti will recover. “We’ve always felt like music is a very inspiring and uniting force, and with Music for Relief, we’ve always wanted it to be something that’s more,” he said. “It’s not supposed to be ‘Linkin Park for Relief’: It is really supposed to be ‘Music for Relief.’ We’ve always felt that with a united group of people, you can do a lot more than just as individuals.” Related Artists Linkin Park
