CBGB Biopic Adds Stars, Will Shoot in Georgia, Naturally

Casting news continues to trickle out for the film based on the wild life and times of CBGB, none of which is quite as eye-opening as word that the story of one of New York City’s most legendary, lamented live-music venues will be filmed largely in… Savannah, Georgia. So it goes! We get some stuntbozo driving a sportscar into a Sbarro for Jerry Bruckheimer, and Savannah gets Malin Åkerman as Debbie Harry , Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome, Joel David Moore as Joey Ramone, and Alan Rickman in the aforementioned role of club proprietor Hilly Kristal, all reviving the dawn of punk and new wave in the edgy metropolis where the Girl Scouts were founded Hollywood honchos go to self-immolate . Rock on, bitches : All of the movie’s interior shots will be done at Meddin Studios, which will be transformed to look like the iconic New York club, said director Randall Miller. “We’re going to build the interior of the club on the stages here,” Miller said. “Then the plan is we’ll do some shooting on the streets of downtown Savannah — and finally a few days in New York. “We’re using both Georgia and New York for New York,” he joked. “Savannah has a kind of downtown area that could really work for so many cities,” Miller said. “That translates pretty well in what we’re doing.” Fine, do what you’ve gotta do. By which I mean cast James Franco as Richard Hell already . [ The Strut , Savannah Morning News via EV Grieve ]

How The Possession Poster Raises the Bar For the Horror Genre

It’s really easy to be cynical about horror movie posters. Most of them are garish, Photoshop nightmares unworthy of a second look. But we really owe it to ourselves to bask in the sublime surrealism of the one-sheet for The Possession . A poster like this one, for a low-budget horror film with a decent pedigree (Sam Raimi is among the producers) that will play as late-summer counterprogramming in multiplexes around the country, comes around, oh, never. I’ll grant you that it is of questionable construction. It’s flat and nearly monochromatic, the Photoshop is sloppy in spots (especially where the wrist meets the mouth), and it feels like a detail from the poster for another Raimi film, Drag Me to Hell : Still, there’s beauty in the simplicity. Take away the title, taglines, and credit block and you instantly know this is a person-possessed movie. No weird upside-down people , no impossible-for-even-the-most-elastic-yogi posing , no one stuck to the ceiling — just a person being mauled from the inside out by a demon clawing its way out of that person’s maw. Any other image meant to illustrate “possessed” looks like unicorns and rainbows in comparison. And why not? Reality is always stranger — and scarier — than fiction, and, my God, this really happened! Somewhere, out in the world, someone is telling the story about that time a girl they knew vomited up a gnarled ghoul hand that then ripped her face off. That’s the takeaway, anyhow, when “Based on a True Story” is placed above the poster’s horrific, inspired image. It’s an audacious juxtaposition. For nearly a decade, horror movies brandishing their ripped-from-reality bonafides have hewed to relatively realistic depictions of their content. The Exorcism of Emily Rose , for example, is atmospheric and unsettling in its depiction of a girl lost in foggy desolation. Similarly, the remake of The Amityville Horror exists in a scuzzy, off-balance suburbia, but it’s one that feels relatively in-step with our world. Even the ridiculous, porny poster for The Devil Inside feels grounded in some perversion of reality. Not so for The Possession . It’s a true story spewed forth from the interior worlds of Lovecraft and Dalí. Our first instinct is to laugh at the absurdity of selling a movie using this image as “based on a true story.” But disbelief quickly gives way to something like awe. On one hand it’s a complete inversion of how to market a real-person-possessed movie. Instead of people contorted by unseen supernatural forces — that is, something we can go in believing actually happened — we’re getting a person brutally face-hugged by a tangible hellspawn, a practical and realistic impossibility that subverts the scare power of these sorts of movies. It’s not frightening, after all, if we know it can’t really happen. (Shock cuts only go so far.) On the other hand, it’s a deft commentary on these kinds of films. We all know they’re ridiculous. But you’d never know it to look at their posters. From the images to the copy, they’re humorless voids of self-righteousness, like an ad for a sanctimonious documentary or a foreign art-house film. Except these are ads for movies about a kid puking, what, smoke? A scarf? Oil? Liquid gold? Or being suspended upside down, against one’s control . And on and on. The Possession one-sheet, in the grand Raimi tradition, is self-aware and calls attention to how ridiculous it all is while simultaneously giving us a good, solid modern horror movie image. I’d be surprised if the image on this poster is ever brought to life in The Possession (but here’s hoping!), and time will tell how grossly it misrepresents the tone and content of the film. But all that seems beside the point when you have a poster of such sly wit and artistry. PREVIOUSLY IN ONE-SHEET WONDER The Simple, Fan-Driven Pleasures of Moonrise Kingdom ‘s First Poster Dante A. Ciampaglia is a writer, editor and photographer in New York. You can find him on Twitter , Tumblr , and, occasionally, his blog .

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: Fresh Princes

The Real Housewives of Atlanta gave us a homecoming, a coronation, and an almost engagement but it still wasn’t enough to put South Africa behind them. Don’t miss the details as we dish it all in THG’s +/- recap! Daddy’s home! Or at least that’s what Kim and the girls call out as Kroy finally comes back from training camp and Plus 15 because damn, it is sweet. They really have missed him. Of course don’t we all feel sorry for Kim. She had to survive a month on her own. Well, her and her nanny, her cleaning staff, her stylist, the interior designer, her assistant, and, the newest of all, her personal chef. Minus 8 . No wonder she has the time to whine. Wait, did I say assistant? Not any more. Sweetie is gone! Plus 10 because I never thought Kim would actually step up and fire her. Sweetie’s a fool. Where else will she find a job where she spends half of her time lounging by the pool? But she got lazy and once she started cursing at the kids it was time to go. We barely saw Kandi or NeNe this hour. They spent a little time with their kids but it’s barely worth mentioning. And we saw nothing of Marlo so Plus 12 for that alone. Sheree and soon to be son-in-law Damon head out to shop for rings. Or maybe not. Well, they do shop for rings but Damon won’t give his price range. I’m sure it’s embarrassing when he’s going to school, working part time and Sheree’s showing him $40,000 rings but he’s got to man up sometime and say what he can afford. Minus 8 . I think Sheree scared the hell out of him. First he says he’ll need to get hammered to get through the engagement and then he decides there isn’t going to be one.

Elsewhere In The World: Egypt Fires Hundreds Of Dirty Cops For Killing Innocent Citizens During Anti-Mubarak Protests

If you think this means there’s a little more justice in Egypt, we hate to tell you that’s not the case. Over 600 Egyptian police officers were let go today, but it was more to try to get people complaining about the lack of justice for the fallen to shut up. Because really, not much has changed in Egypt since Hosni Mubarak left. The move came on the same day the military council ruling the country announced that parliamentary elections planned for September would be delayed until October or November. The postponement will help new political parties challenge the more experienced Muslim Brotherhood, which was expected to win at least 25% of the seats in parliament. Secular parties had pressed for a delay, fearing that a parliament heavily influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood’s conservative agenda would threaten human rights and religious tolerance. The Islamist organization’s reach may be further diminished by new regulations for choosing the 100-member assembly that will draft a new constitution. The firing of 669 police officers was the biggest reshuffle in the Interior Ministry’s history. It includes 505 brigadier generals, 82 colonels and 37 officers charged in the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the weeks-long revolution that overthrew Mubarak on Feb. 11. The announcement came during the sixth day of demonstrations in Tahrir Square by activists seeking to pressure the interim government to bring Mubarak and members of his regime to justice. The government and military council fear that the return of tents and banners to the square will further disrupt a nation facing labor strikes, a troubled economy and political unrest. “The firings are to gradually dismantle the police state we used to live in,” said Ammar Ali Hassan, head of the Middle East Center for research and political studies. “Protesters have succeeded in forcing security officials and the police into such changes, despite police efforts to keep the system they had before the Jan. 25 revolution.” So far, only one police officer has been found guilty of killing demonstrators last winter. He was sentenced to death. The country is awaiting the trials of Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib Adli, both of whom have been accused in the deaths of protesters. We hope that slow crawl to justice doesn’t cost too many more lives. Source
