According to Essence: In celebration of International Women’s Day, Naomi Campell joined the UN Women for Peace’s March To End Violence Against Women campaign on Friday. The supermodel joined other powerful female figures at the United Nations Building in New York City and marched through Manhattan to shed light on efforts towards rights and equality for women. Campbell delivered a speech at the event and was even moved to tears by the unity shown and the inspiring words shared throughout the day. About three weeks after being diagnosed with breast cancer , Amy Robach posted an open letter to fans on the Good Morning America website yesterday. The reporter unfortunately said physicians have found a second malignancy, but added that her “prognosis is good” and she remains in positive spirits overall. “Physically and emotionally I have been through the ringer, but I am emerging on the other side so much stronger. I have a greater appreciation for life, for health and for how such simple acts of kindness can be so incredibly powerful,” the 40-year-old wrote. “I am looking through a different lens now…and I am thankful for that as well. There was my life before October 30th and now my life after.” Robach, the wife of actor Andrew Shue, actually found out about the lump in her breast via an ABC-sponsored mammogram and hopes to return to work on December 2. “My cancer had spread to my sentinel lymph node, but not beyond, so I will have more treatments ahead of me, but none that will take me out of work,” she says. Amy then concluded her note with a message to supporters. “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work,” she wrote. “Your support and love has made this all an experience that has given me the strength to fight the fear and hopefully help others do the same in the days/weeks/years to come!” We wish Robach nothing but the best.
Kim Kardashian is doing her part to help those affected by last week’s deadly typhoon in the Philippines . Her pretty small part, that is. The reality star announced on her blog Thursday that she’s auctioning off clothing on eBay , with the money raised being sent to a charity that benefits those in this ravaged area. Absolutely. “The proceeds will go directly to the communities they’re serving in the Philippines and will help typhoon survivors get access to medical care and ultimately save lives,” Kardashian writes on her Celebuzz blog. But Kim fails to mention the fine print on the auction pages: only 10 percent of the final sales price will go to the International Medical Corps. A whole 10 percent. “My prayers and thoughts are with those affected by the typhoon. Check out my eBay auction and support those who need out help in the Philippines.” While her clothes will certainly yield a lot of money and even 10 percent of that is better than nothing, somehow it seems like a wasted opportunity to do more. Via NYDailyNews reports : At least 92 people died and scores were missing after a boat packed with up to 500 African migrants sank off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Thursday, the coast guard said. Bodies fished from the water were laid out along the quayside as the death toll rose in what looked like one of the worst disasters to hit the perilous route for migrants seeking to reach Europe from Africa. “It’s horrific, like a cemetery, they are still bringing them out,” Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini told reporters. The Associated Press has the current death toll at 94. Italian coast guard officials said 150 survivors had been rescued so far of the between 400 and 500 migrants thought to be on the 20-metre (66 ft) boat that caught fire and sank about 1 km (half a mile) off the island. The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said it believed there were around 500 passengers, all Eritreans who had boarded in Libya. Almost 500 people were reported dead or missing making the crossing from Tunisia to Italy last year, the UNHCR says. Numbers have been boosted by thousands of refugees from the civil war in Syria. “I commend the swift action taken by the Italian coast guard to save lives. At the same time, I am dismayed at the rising global phenomenon of migrants and people fleeing conflict or persecution and perishing at sea,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said. Migrants frequently land on Lampedusa, just 113 km (70 miles) from the coast of Tunisia, often picked up at sea by the Italian coast guard in dangerously overcrowded boats. Pope Francis visited the island in July, on his first trip outside Rome, to draw attention to the plight of refugees. He said the death of people trying to reach a better life was like “a thorn in the heart”. The stream of migrants is a humanitarian and political problem for the Italian government. Some 15,000 reached Italy and Malta – 13,200 and 1,800 respectively – by sea last year, the UNHCR says. Calling the deaths of migrants “an endless tragedy,” Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said: “The rescue operation began immediately but it is getting more difficult because now the weather is getting colder, they don’t know how to swim, they don’t know where to go.” A fishing boat raised the alarm at around 7:20 a.m. (1:20 a.m. ET) and began pulling people out of the water before coast guard vessels arrived on the scene. Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said more needed to be done to combat people traffickers who coordinate the transport of migrants in crowded and unsafe vessels. “It is a task which we have to take on and which the international community and the European community have to take on as well,” he said. Where are her parents ? A Chinese girl driven to become a flight attendant has been camping out at the international airport in South China since July — despite being escorted out twice! Via Fox News reports : A 13-year-old girl in China is taking her dream a step too far by camping out at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and baffling police in the process, the South China Morning Post reported. Luo Siqi has reportedly been at the airport, which is the hub of China Southern Airlines, since July. Police twice in August escorted her to a Guangzhou children’s welfare center, but she insists on returning to the airport. Determined to be recruited, Siqi even wears a uniform resembling that worn by China Southern Airlines flight attendants, which she bought online. She also carries around what appears to be airline documents. “I am truly in love with the sky. Let me go to the airport,” she reportedly told police. We respect her tenacity but shorty needs to get back to school and step her goals up a little, no disrespect to flight attendants but if you love the skies go get that pilot’s license.
