Just like most places in America, when it comes to hospital emergency rooms — race matters ! Study Shows Black Children Less Likely To Receive Meds For Stomach Pain In Emergency Room Black children seen in the emergency department for abdominal pain are less likely to receive pain medication than white children, according to a new study. The research, which also found that black and Hispanic children were more likely to experience an ER stay longer than six hours compared to white children — even when the same tests were ordered — raises questions on how race may affect hospital care when it comes to the youngest patients. The study was presented Saturday at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Boston. Lead study author Dr. Tiffani J. Johnson, pediatric emergency medicine fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, says she has a strong interest in improving the quality and equity of care that kids receive in the ER. “If we don’t recognize disparities, we’re never going to be able to close the gaps,” says Johnson. Johnson and colleagues used data from the CDC’s National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, which included more than 2,000 children from 550 hospitals who visited the ER for abdominal pain between 2006 and 2009. Black children were 39 percent less likely to receive pain medications compared to white children with similar medical situations. When their pain was severe, rated 7 or higher on a pain scale from 0 to 10, an even larger disparity was observed. Children are always at greater risk to be undertreated or mistreated compared to adults because of their limited ability to communicate how they feel. Anything else that negatively impacts their care would be important to identify so that providers can be educated. Past research has shown that race can affect the way that adults express their pain. A 2002 study published in the International Journal of Intercultural Relations found that black patients were less likely to disclose the fact that they were in pain than their white counterparts. When they did discuss their pain they were less likely to describe its intensity. And doctors might also be less skilled in recognizing the pain of certain races. Specifically, doctors were almost twice as likely to underestimate the pain of black patients compared to other ethnicities in a 2007 study from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. Whether either of these findings applies to pain in children is simply not known. Johnson says we need additional studies to find out exactly what factors lead to variations in care. “Now we need to look at where these differences are coming from,” says Johnson. “Are they at the patient level, the parent level or the physician level?” In the meantime, Johnson says, her study’s findings offer an important reminder to doctors. “I hope that providers caring for children will recognize this,” she says, “and make efforts to ensure they are proving appropriate pain control for children of all ethnicities.” This is pretty alarming. You would think that people would treat children well regardless of their race because they are just children. They need to get to the bottom of these disparities and fix them ASAP. My name is Kalise and it feels pretty weird writing this now. A few days before I met Justin I was reading other people’s Bieber experiences on here! Here’s my story! My friends and I knew that Justin was going to be in London so we went to his hotel and waited in the freezing cold for him (we didn’t care though, it was worth it). Then when he didn’t come outside, we left to go check out some other places that he could be at, but no luck. Already disappointed we thought okay, let’s go back to his hotel quickly just to check. After waiting for about 10 minutes, we saw his car driving round from the back to the road. Everyone started chasing after the car. I wasn’t sure whether it was his so I was a bit hesitant at first, but then I saw his head pop out from the roof of the car as it stopped in the middle of the street, which is when I practically flew across the car in the midst of the busy traffic! I was able to touch his hand! I was overly happy at this, bit little did I know I was about to be even closer to him later. We then found out that he was going to be at a secret location doing a private launch session . We quickly went there to find loads of other fans waiting outside for just a glimpse of him too. After about 20 minutes, Kenny came out and said he was going to pick a few random fans to come inside. I was waving my hand trying to get Kenny to notice me, but he walked past me several times, ignoring my frantic plea. I continued to try to catch his attention and finally I did! I was one if the chosen few to accompany Justin at his album launch. Overly excited I went inside with about 10 other beliebers and lined up at the back. Justin introduced a few songs off his new album ‘Believe’ which were AMAZING! Then after his interview with Reggie Yates, Kenny called him over to us. At this point I was freaking out, but tried to remain calm. Justin then came over to hug me and the other fans. I asked him to follow me on Twitter but it was fairly noisy in there so I don’t think he heard, so he just said, “Swaggy” . Whilst he was talking to someone, he put his hand on my shoulder. I’m kicking myself for not reacting. I didn’t no what to do, I kinda just froze. After that he was talking to one of the other fans whilst he was standing sorta infront of/next to me and I wanted to hold his hand but I didn’t wanna be pushy. I just put my hand next to his hand so that my knuckles were touching the back of his hand and then he realized and just started holding my hand whilst he was in a conversation with someone . (That was actually my favourite part of whole experience with him) Then I said to him, “You know I haven’t eaten all day because I’ve been chasing you around” and he was like, “Chasing me around? And you haven’t eaten? You should go get something now, McDonald’s or something . .” Kenny then said to him it was time to leave, and that was it, my very own bieber experience and it was absolutely incredible. I just wish my friend (@SafiyaStyles) who also loves him could have shared the experience with me. In fact, I wish every fan could meet him. I’m not gonna be cliche and say ‘Just believe, never say never’ but instead I will say, once you try your utmost to go out and try to find him, eventually you will meet him. Look at me, I had been trying for years. You will come across disappointing times but you just have to keep trying no matter how long it takes. Good luck guys, thanks for reading. The rhythm is gonna get ya… Rosa Acosta Dances In New “Entourage” Commercial Shot By Director X If you’ve missed Rosa’s moves, they show up in a brand new commercial for “Entourage” which is heading to the Spike network very soon. In honor of the move Director X was recruited to film a brand new promo. Check out her very special two step in the “Entourage” car: While the video is plenty (of a$$) on it’s own — King Magazine tracked down Director X to talk with him about the project. Check out some excerpts from their interview below: KING: Tell us how this “Independent Project” come about? DIRECTOR X: It’s just something we did. That’s actually the Entourage car from [the show’s opening sequence]. So, we’re shooting the commercial, and we have Rosa do a dance in the car. But Rosa is pretty talented. So, she goes and choreographs something in her head. That’s what I mean: she’s a next level type of girl. And she does this. It’s only two takes, something we shot at the end of the day. When I was in the edit I realized this is gold, it’s so good I had to do something else with it. So I had Snoop’s CD, grabbed [”Luv Drunk” featuring The-Dream”], I put the two together, it looked like that’s what she was dancing to, and boom: we got the independent project. So is Rosa the star of the video or is the car the star? C’mon, Rosa. It’s nice that the car is from Entourage, it’s f***ing amazing that Rosa is doing what she’s doing on it. But this was from her actual sequence in the commercial, right? Oh yeah, you see a clip [of this dance] in the Spike commercial. The concept of the commercial is these girls rapping about the fact that they were once in Entourage. The commercial has all kinds of crazy stuff, Gary Busey’s in there…it’s just kind of insane. [Rosa’s] platform was to dance in the car. And normally when you tell a girl that, they just freestyle it away. But she actually planned something out. I haven’t seen any girls do anything like that. So is this the beginning of something bigger? Or is this a one-and-done type of deal? One and done. I didn’t plan to do it, but I did it. The world deserves to see all that footage, so there you go. You’ve set more than a few trends in the Hip-Hop video world. Do you see someone dropping a video of a girl in a car anytime soon? Let’s see what happens and how people respond to it when we put this out. We all know what Snoop and Dream look like. Would it have been better if we saw [them] in there rapping and singing at some point? I don’t think so. I think it’s perfect with just two shots of Rosa on a car. One wide, one medium, and she dances and there you go. Now that the social awareness of hip-hop has broadened, do you see people doing more artistic, conceptual videos instead of the norm? I don’t know, man. People are kinda stuck in their ways, so I’d be surprised to see a really big shift. But things like this show you…you can make something engaging. But you have to have Rosa Acosta. You need a girl of that talent. It’s not just a hot girl shaking her a$$. Vanessa Williams is finally cleaning out her closet Vanessa Williams Reveals Abusive Sexual Past In Nightline Interview Having opened up earlier this month about the sexual abuse she suffered as a 10-year-old, Vanessa Williams is now revealing her heartbreaking secret high school pregnancy that ended in abortion. “Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life,” revealed the 49-year-old Desperate Housewives star during an interview with ABC’s Nightline. “I knew in high school that’s something that I was not prepared to do, or fight, or struggle with.” The actress claims her early sexual awakening was a direct response to the molestation she suffered at the hands of a female family friend, as RadarOnline.com previously reported. “I think I was highly sexualized because I was in fifth grade and I had this experience,” she explained. “Because it feels good, you’re like, OK, well this is supposed to be normal. That’s not normal for a 10-year-old to be seduced.” While appearing on Nightline with her mom, Helen Williams, Vanessa revealed how she had aborted her baby as a teen because she was too scared to tell her parents about her fall from grace. In the book, Vanessa also tells-all about the infamous photoshoot that cost her the Miss America tiara. “I started out on top of a cab and ended up in a studded collar upstairs an hour later,” Williams said. “That was my joke, saying, you know, ‘How could I go from this trusting, you know, photo shoot, to being in S&M clothing within the same shoot with a guy I didn’t know.’” Ultimately, the snapper didn’t keep his word, and Vanessa was catapulted from the stage of Miss America to the pages of Penthouse, leading to a sex scandal that cost the beauty queen her crown. “I’ve learned to embrace my past.
