WaPo Finally Runs Story on NASA Administrator Bolden: Eight Paragraphs On Page A13

In a June 30 interview with “Talk to Al Jazeera,” NASA administrator Charles Bolden revealed that President Obama had tasked him with “find[ing] a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.” The media largely ignored the story, with a few exceptions, such as Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer .  Among the media outlets that blacked out the controversy was the Washington Post, which didn’t cover the Bolden controversy until today. Even then, the paper printed on page A13 a brief 8-paragraph item by the Reuters news wire : White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday that NASA administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr. was wrong to say that reaching out to the Muslim world was a top priority of the U.S. space agency. Bolden raised eyebrows in the space community and outrage among conservative pundits by telling al-Jazeera television recently that President Barack Obama had instructed him to work for better outreach with the Muslim world. He said Obama told him that one of his top priorities was to “find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering.” Improving relations with the Muslim world was a top foreign policy priority for Obama upon taking office last year, and he delivered a major speech on the topic in Cairo in June 2009. Last week, the White House sought to clarify Bolden’s comment, saying Obama wanted NASA to engage with the world’s best scientists and engineers from countries such as Russia, Japan, Israel and many Muslim-majority countries. That failed to end the controversy. Gibbs was asked at his daily news briefing why Bolden had made the comment. “I don’t think — that was not his task, and that’s not the task of NASA,” Gibbs said. The question was posed by CNN’s Ed Henry and can be found at 18:45 on the video linked here (transcript via WhiteHouse.gov ): Q    I wanted to ask you, there are some comments that the NASA Administrator, Charles Bolden, made a couple weeks back that drew some interest, specifically from conservatives who are wondering why we he said that one of the charges that the President gave him when he got the job was that he had to focus on outreach to the Muslim world.  Why is the NASA Administrator doing that? MR. GIBBS:  That’s an excellent question, and I don’t think — that was not his task, and that’s not the task of NASA. Q    So did he just misspeak? MR. GIBBS:  I think so. Q    Has the President spoken to him about that clear it up? MR. GIBBS:  No. Q    Anybody here at the White House? MR. GIBBS:  I’m sure people — people at the White House here talk to NASA all the time.

Investigation Clears Israeli Commandos of Wrongdoing; AP, WaPo Focus on ‘Mistakes’

The Israeli commandos who intercepted a flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip on May 31 were cleared of wrongdoing by a military inquiry into the matter. The same panel faulted the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for “mistakes that were made in decisions, including some taken at relatively high levels,” according to retired Israeli Major General Giora Eiland . While we at NewsBusters have taken Reuters to task before for their biased coverage of the Middle East, the news wire actually broke from the pack a bit in its portrayal of the story , focusing on the conclusion that there was no wrongdoing by the Israelis in the now infamous raid. By contrast, the Washington Post and Associated Press opened their stories focused on the negative. Below are the lede paragraphs for the respective news agencies: JERUSALEM — An internal Israeli review of the navy’s raid against a Turkish aid ship faulted planners Monday for not formulating alternative plans and concluded that the agencies involved should have shared intelligence more efficiently before the operation.  TEL AVIV, Israel — Flawed intelligence-gathering and planning led to Israel’s botched and deadly raid on a Gaza-bound protest flotilla, with security forces underestimating the potential for violence, said the official report released Monday. Reuters noted as early as the fourth paragraph of its July 12 story that the Israeli commandos were found to have discharged their weapons in self defense. A few paragraphs later it noted that: Eiland said his inquiry found evidence that activists on the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara opened fire on Israeli commandos. “We found that there are at least four incidents in which the people who were on the ship shot at our soldiers, either by using the weapons that were stolen from the soldiers or a weapon that they had,” he said. “We do have evidence that there was at least one weapon on this ship before we arrived and there is good reason to believe that the first shooting that occurred was when our soldier, the second soldier that arrived on the deck from the very first helicopter was shot by somebody,” he added. The Washington Post’s Janine Zacharia also made reference to Eiland’s findings about the crew and/or passengers of the Turkish ship firing on the Israeli commandos and noted that “[t]he inquiry also found that passengers had cut off banisters from the ship to use as weapons against the soldiers.” By contrast, although Ian Deitch hacked out 25 paragraphs for his story, the AP writer found no room to elaborate on the findings other than this brief reference in the second paragraph: The report, however, praised the commandos who took part in the operation, saying they were justified in opening fire and killing nine after being confronted by violent pro-Palestinian activists on board one of the ships.

Roseanne Barr: Republicans ‘Cherish the Freedom to Have Sex with Small Children’

Eccentric comedian and former talk show host Roseanne Barr claimed on her blog July 8 that Republicans are avid kiddie porn viewers who like to have sex with young children. The liberal activist and comedy queen was blogging about sicko children’s author K.P. Bath, who was just slapped with a six years prison term for child porn possession last week. In a item titled ” typical republican child porn consuming geek ,” Barr posted a mug shot of Bath and wrote that he was “a typical republican who loves reagan and palin and despises the ‘nanny state’ and socialism.” “[K. P. Bath] cherishes the freedom to have sex with small children, as all [R]epublicans do,” Barr continued. She then added, in parentheses, “just kidding, sort of.” Barr, who pals around with Michael Moore and Code Pinkers, has become known for scribbling bone-headed political commentary on her personal blog. In April, she blogged that Catholics who take their children to church should lose custody of their kids, and in 2008 she referred to Israel as a “NAZI state.” Despite her nutty, and often grammatically incorrect rantings, some media personalities have still given Barr air time. Last December she was interviewed on the “Joy Behar Show” on CNN Headline News, where she claimed Sarah Palin was a “slave to right-wing men.” She’s also appeared on ” Real Time with Bill Maher ” and ” Jimmy Kimmel Live .”

CBS’s Couric to Netanyahu: ‘Should You Be More Strongly Advocating’ on Obama’s Behalf?

In an interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric noted President Obama’s unpopularity in Israel and pressed Netanyahu to remedy that fact: “To change public opinion in your country, should you be more strongly advocating on his behalf?” Couric preceded that question by citing a recent poll of Israelis, which she seemed perplexed by: “Can you explain this to me, then? In a poll conducted a month ago – just a month ago – 71 percent of the Jews in Israel surveyed said they dislike President Obama; 47 percent expressed a strong dislike.” Earlier in the interview, Couric tried to gauge Netanyahu’s feelings toward Obama: “Do you trust Barack Obama?…surely there have been disappointments with the Obama administration. Can you just be candid with me and tell me how the administration has disappointed you?” While Couric asked about Israeli “disappointments” with Obama, she never cited any specific Obama administration policies or actions as the cause of those disappointments. On Wednesday’s Good Morning America on ABC, co-host George Stephanopoulos repeatedly badgered Netanyahu on ways to improve the U.S.-Israel relationship, placing no responsibility on President Obama to repair the alliance: “One analyst said, this is a false calm. Suggesting that you can’t or won’t deliver what President Obama is calling for in the peace process. So, what concrete steps are you prepared to take?” Here is a transcript of the first part of Couric’s July 7 interview with Netanyahu: 6:39PM ET KATIE COURIC: In other news, it appeared yesterday that President Obama had accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Israel. But today the White House said the trip, is, quote, ‘not on the books for this year.’ So have the two leaders really patched up their differences? That was part of the conversation when I interviewed the Prime Minister this afternoon here in New York. Do you trust Barack Obama? NETANYAHU: I trust Barack Obama, the President of the United States, to carry out with me the policies that have joined Israel and the United States in what Barack Obama has called the ‘unbreakable bond.’ We have common goals, common interests, and we now have a job to do to get on with our common goal of achieving peace with security. I trust we’ll be able to do that together. COURIC: While you want to accentuate the positive, clearly – that’s part of your mission here in the United States – surely there have been disappointments with the Obama administration. Can you just be candid with me and tell me how the administration has disappointed you? NETANYAHU: You know, you remind me of the Israeli press. They say ‘how come you had a good meeting with President Obama?’ Well, because I did. Because we actually see eye to eye on some central issues. The quest for peace, the danger of Iran, the need to bolster security for Israel and the region. That’s the truth. We do see it. Have we had differences? Of course we had. But I think some differences- COURIC: Some awkward moments? NETANYAHU: Yes, of course we had. So what? Even they are magnified and distorted. I think the President has a fine mind, and I can relate to it. COURIC: Can you explain this to me, then? In a poll conducted a month ago – just a month ago – 71 percent of the Jews in Israel surveyed said they dislike President Obama; 47 percent expressed a strong dislike. NETANYAHU: Well, maybe they don’t have the opportunity to have the kind of conversations that I had. And maybe they’re not aware, also, of the ongoing cooperation between Israel and the United States in the fields of security, intelligence. The fact that the Iron Dome program to protect against missiles is something that has been bolstered by this administration and by this president. We have a common goal to achieve a secure peace. I’m looking forward to working with him to achieve it. COURIC: Well, to change public opinion in your country, should you be more strongly advocating on his behalf? NETANYAHU: You know, I invited the President to Israel. I hope that he finds an appropriate time to come. I think that when people get to know him, and first lady Michelle Obama was very kind to my wife, they gave us a very warm reception. I hope I’ll be able to – we’ll be able to reciprocate in Israel.      COURIC: And later in this broadcast, what Prime Minister Netanyahu thinks the U.S. and Israel can do to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Justin Bieber Is Not Going To North Korea, Rep Confirms

Bieber-related Internet hoaxes and attacks abound in recent weeks. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage At this point, Justin Bieber ‘s camp is sort of used to the Internet hoaxes — he’s had syphilis, gotten pregnant and even died a few times, if you can believe what you read — but over the past week, there’s been one hoax that just won’t go away: His (supposed) concert stop in North Korea. It all started with a supposed contest organized by a site called Faxo.com that allowed fans to vote on which country he should visit on an upcoming leg of his My World Tour, with absolutely no restrictions. That proved advantageous for the jokesters over at the notorious 4chan message board, who encouraged folks to vote for North Korea — the communist nation where citizens are denied Internet access and the media is strictly controlled by the government. Within days, North Korea climbed the charts, and by Wednesday, when the contest ended, it had leapfrogged Israel to claim the top spot. Of course, the Internet went insane once again, and some media outlets even reported that the contest was real. But while the idea of Bieber performing for Kim Jong-il is certainly hilarious, it’s not actually true. Sure, North Korea may have won the Faxo contest, but the contest was in no way sanctioned by Bieber or anyone in his camp, according to a statement e-mailed on Wednesday (July 7) to MTV News. “It was a spoof site,” a spokesperson for Bieber wrote. “This is not a legitimate contest.” So, sadly, the Justin Bieber North Korea concert will not come to fruition anytime soon, something the Internet attributed to something other than the contest’s illegitimacy. Early Wednesday morning, more pranksters had made the most-searched term on Google Trends “Justin Bieber Hates Korea.” Meanwhile, Bieber fans were subjected to yet another Internet attack. According to the BBC , hackers wrote code into the comments sections of Bieber videos on YouTube, flashing unsuspecting fans with news of the singer’s death and/or redirecting them to adult websites. Google issued a statement saying the company “took swift action to fix a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability” on the video site. None of this seems to have slowed Bieber’s own Internet activity, however, as the avid Twitterer continues to rally his followers around his latest singles and even deigns to respond to a rumor or two. Back in June, for instance, he wrote, “One … I’m not dead. I had to check on this one … but it turns out I’m alive.” Related Videos Frame By Frame: Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber’s ‘Eenie Meenie’ MTV News Extended Play: Justin Bieber Related Photos Justin Bieber And His Many Lady Friends Related Artists Justin Bieber

Israel blacklisted some weapons and materials to enter Gaza

The Israeli government announced the list of what goods it will allow to enter the Gaza Strip. A blacklist of items including weapons and materials that could have a military use will be limited or barred, but consumer goods are all allowed. The blacklist includes multi-purpose items that could be used to manufacture explosives and weapons, such as fireworks and ball bearings. Materials such as steel, fertilizers, cement and chemicals will be allowed in for Palestinian Authority-approved projects that are under the supervision and for the use of the UN or other international agencies. Hamas, the one who controls Gaza Strip, dismissed the concessions as of no use and said the blockade should be fully lifted. Its blockade of the Palestinian territory is needed to prevent the supply of weapons to Hamas, Israel says. Israel came under pressure to ease its 4-year blockade of Gaza after 9 activists from Turkey were killed in a an Israeli raid last 31st day of May, on a flotilla that was trying to carry aid to the Palestinian territory. Centuries-Old State of the Art Still Useful Today

The 2,000-year-old aqueduct system found in the Turkish town of Patara would have met current engineering standards. Obama’s Former Rev. Wright Gives Seminar Bashing Whites and Jews, Media Mum

President Obama’s former spiritual advisor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, gave a seminar at the University of Chicago last week in which he made numerous anti-Semitic remarks while once again attacking white people. According to the New York Post, during the five-day course that cost up to $1,000, Wright claimed “whites and Jews are controlling the flow of worldwide information and oppressing blacks in Israel and America.” “White folk done took this country,” Wright said. “You’re in their home, and they’re gonna let you know it.”  Despite the astonishingly racist comments during this week-long event, as well as his former connection to the current President of the United States, not one media outlet besides the Post reported what transpired at the Chicago Theological Seminary on the university campus. Not one! For those that can stand it, here are some more disgraceful things uttered by the man our President worshiped with for twenty years (h/t Weasel Zippers ): “You are not now, nor have you ever been, nor will you ever be a brother to white folk,” he said. “And if you do not realize that, you are in serious trouble.” He cited the writings of Bill Jones — author of the book “Is God a White Racist?” — as proof that white people cannot be trusted. “Bill said, ‘They just killed four of their own at Kent State. They’ll step on you like a cockroach and keep on movin’, cause you not a brother to them.’ ” Wright referred to Italians as “Mamma Luigi” and “pizzeria.” He said the educational system in America is designed by whites to miseducate blacks “not by benign neglect but by malignant intent.” He said Ethiopian Jews are despised by white Jews: “And now the Knesset [Israeli parliament] is meeting with European Jews, voting on whether or not these African Jews can get into [Israel].” The civil-rights movement, Wright said, was never about racial equality: “It was always about becoming white . . . to master what [they] do.” Martin Luther King, he said, was misguided for advocating nonviolence among his people, “born in the oven of America.” “We probably have more African-Americans who’ve been brainwashed than we have South Africans who’ve been brainwashed,” he said, and seemed to allude to President Obama twice: “Unfortunately, I got in trouble with a fella for saying this . . . All your commentaries are written by oppressors.” At the mention of Nation of Islam head Louis Farrakhan — whom Obama disavowed during the campaign — black leaders “go cuttin’ and duckin’,” he said. As media ignore the disgusting things this man says, they are complicit in separating him from the man he once advised spiritually. It’s as if Obama never sat in the pews of the Trinity Church and his Reverend never existed.

Brzezinski: Invite Iran To Conference On Afghanistan’s Future

Great idea.  While we’re at it, let’s invite al Qaeda to a conference on Israel’s future . . . On Morning Joe today, Zbigniew Brzezinski recommended that the US organize an “international conference” on Afghanistan’s future—and invite Iran to participate. The former Carter National Security Advisor didn’t say what positive contribution he might expect from a country working in defiance of international sanctions to develop nuclear weapons and that has stated its desire to wipe Israel off the map.  ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI:  I think we have to have some sort of an international conference drawing in the neighbors of Afghanistan into the process regarding the future of Afghanistan.  That means, among others, the Iranians. So, there are a number of things we need to do, difficult as they are, to achieve the objectives the president has set for himself. Zbig’s daughter Mika could be heard uttering a [quizzical?] “hmm” in response.  Will any of the MSM pick up on Brzezinski’s suggestion?  Might Pres. Obama take a cue from Carter’s man?

87 Senators Sign Letter Urging Obama’s Support of Israel, Media Mostly Mum

On Monday, 87 Senators signed a letter to President Obama affirming their support for Israel while urging his. This comes in response to last month’s highly-publicized flotilla incident in the Mediterranean Sea and the United Nations predictable anti-Israel reaction. A similar letter has been circulated in the House that has apparently garnered 307 signatures. Despite the overwhelming bipartisan outcry — something rather rare in Washington these days to be sure — very few American media outlets bothered to report the news. Fortunately, the Hill published the following Wednesday (h/t Weasel Zippers ): Led by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) – and signed by 85 other members of the upper chamber – the letter argues that Israel’s blockade of Gaza was both legal and necessary, and that Israeli commandos were acting in self-defense when they landed on the ship. “[V]ideo footage shows that the Israeli commandos who arrived on the sixth ship, which was owned by the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (the IHH), were brutally attacked with iron rods, knives, and broken glass,” the senators wrote. “They were forced to respond to that attack and we regret the loss of life that resulted,” the letter adds. The bipartisan group of lawmakers urged Obama to oppose a resolution in the United Nations critical of Israel. According to JTA.org, a similar letter has been signed by 307 Representatives in the House. Yet, besides the Hill, LexisNexis and Google News searches produced only Agence France-Presse and UPI reporting this news in the States. No newspapers, no television outlets, and no Associated Press. Why might that be? For those interested, full text with signatories of the Senate letter is available here . Readers are advised that too many of the signatures were illegible making it impossible to know who the thirteen Senators that didn’t sign the letter are. Stay tuned.
