James Bond Will Return…After New, Indefinite Delay

James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had a lot of goodwill and momentum coming out of the 2006 franchise reboot Casino Royale ; since then, however, there’s been nothing but trouble. Roger Michell was originally in negotiations to direct Quantum of Solace , then dropped out (Marc Forster eventually replaced him), while writer Paul Haggis rushed to finish his script before the WGA strike. The resulting film was coolly received. Now, the make-or-break follow-up has run into an even bigger obstacle.

The Verge: Alex O’Loughlin

How famous is Alex O’L oughlin? Ask him and he’ll assure you that he isn’t, but ask the marketers who put his name above the title on ads for the Jennifer Lopez romcom The Back-Up Plan and they may whistle a different tune. The truth is that O’L oughlin is the sort of actor who’s been on the verge of stardom for a while now, a charismatic, handsome Australian with the sort of dedicated female fanbase that comes when you play a sexy vampire in your first American project, the television series Moonlight . That series was canceled, as was O’L oughlin’s last show Three Rivers , but CBS has high hopes that an O’L aughlin-led Hawaii Five-O revival will be a fixture of its fall schedule. On the eve of The Back-Up Plan’s release this Friday, O’L oughlin called up Movieline to discuss the way Jennifer Lopez informs his notion of celebrity, the amount of faith CBS executives have had in him, and how he still smarts (just a little!) from losing the role of James Bond.

Does Relativity Want James Bond?

Relativity Media has reportedly offered MGM $500 million to continue making films while it sorts out its sale and attempts to climb out from under billions in debt. Specifically the free-spending, Ryan Kavanaugh-led investors seem to want to get in on the next James Bond film (and presumably The Hobbit ) — otherwise he may as well spend around half that amount to poach MGM boss Mary Parent to go back to the Universal lot. But would Bond’s producers and/or Sam Mendes even make a 007 movie for the slimmer budget this implies, especially when you throw in two Hobbit movies (which would have to slim down themselves)? And isn’t the emphasis right now supposed to be on recovering debt through offloading MGM’ s library? Insert migraine here. [ Deadline ]

Matt Damon Says ‘No’ To ‘Bourne’

Green Zone star Matt Damon has ruled out appearing in a fourth Bourne flick and said he’s “just saying no.” The 39-year-old actor took on the role of agent Jason Bourne in the first three movies but said he isn’t interested in coming back for a fourth and believes the film needs to take a different direction according to an interview with Parade.com. “I think there’s a good way to do a prequel with someone else, but not me. What any studio is interested in is making a franchise like Bourne an evergreen that can just go on and on. With me playing him, Bourne got his memory back three times. So I don’t think anybody wants to see me say ‘I don’t remember’ again.’ But you could do a prequel with another actor being the first Bourne before his identity gets passed on to me. In fact, why not two or three? As for me coming back to do him again, I’m just saying no.” Sounds like Damon wants to turn the Bourne Franchise in to James Bond .
