Academy Civil War Brewing Over 2012 Oscar Hosts?

The Great Oscar Host Debacle of 2011 remains an open wound today at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, from which Academy president Tom Sherak ruminated about the efficacy (or lack thereof) of James Franco, Anne Hathaway, and/or any comics who might have assumed their places. But the real fun starts, however, with the told-you-so moment supplied by an anonymous, “high-ranking Academy member.”

Alonso’s Oscar Picks: The Kids Are All Right, The Oscars Are Not

When I was a little kid, I really, really, really loved the Oscars. For a wee gay movie-obsessed lad growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, it was the sort of annual event to be anticipated with both excitement and reverence. Every year when we’d get the TV Guide issue with the full-page “Close-Up” box on the Oscars, featuring thumbnail pictures of the ten Best Actor and Actress nominees, my heart would race. Before I was old enough that my parents would let me stay up late and watch the whole thing (this was back when the show began at 9 p.m. on the East Coast), I somehow convinced them to nudge me awake at midnight, tell me who won in the major categories, and then I’d roll over and go back to sleep.

VIDEO: Latest Oscar Promo Turns Anne Hathaway Into a ‘Rump Shaker’

James Franco and Anne Hathaway (and the ABC promo department) have done well in creating a sense of guarded optimism about the job the pair will do hosting the Oscars on Sunday night. Which is why you should think twice before watching the latest promo for the show. No, it’s not romantic and beautiful, like the 19 seconds of the Grease parody that James Franco sent out to Twitter on Wednesday; it’s awkward and cringe-worthy. Unless the idea of seeing Anne Hathaway-as-Madonna-as-Evita singing “Rump Shaker” is your idea of a party. Then, watch away! Popping and locking at your desk is optional.

About That Time Courtney Love Saved Chris Rock From an Oscars-Related Fight

Maybe instead of soliciting advice from Judd Apatow , this year’s Academy Award co-host (and new Twitter user ) James Franco should be asking an actual former Oscar host for advice. Like Chris Rock, who in a new interview admitted that he almost got into a fight because of his stage material. Fortunately, Courtney Love was there to save him.

Narnia Producer, Novelist Perry Moore Dead at 39

Whoa: Perry Moore, who served as executive producer on the Chronicles of Narnia franchise and authored the benchmark gay teen superhero novel Hero , was found dead Thursday in his New York apartment building. He was 39. Sources say Moore suffered a drug overdose; at least two reports cite OxyContin, adding that no criminality is suspected. Moore was reportedly in the middle of writing a Hero sequel and had begun another young-adult series about superhero triplets. He was discovered by his partner, Hunter Hill, with whom he’d directed the 2008 indie feature Lake City and (with Spike Jonze) a documentary about Maurice Sendak. Quite a loss. RIP. [ THR ]
