Amy Winehouse, Nas Duet ‘Like Smoke’ Debuts

First single from Winehouse’s posthumous album premiered on New York’s Hot 97 Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: MTV News The world got its first taste of Amy Winehouse ‘s upcoming posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, when the late singer’s duet with rapper pal Nas premiered on New York’s Hot 97 on Wednesday. The tune from the album, due December 6, is called “Like Smoke,” and it was recorded in May 2008 and produced by Amy’s longtime collaborator Salaam Remi. It features Winehouse singing in her signature slurry blues drawl over a classic Motown downbeat as Mr. Jones serves up some of his knotty verses. In fact, while Winehouse sings the five-line hook on the tune, it is Nas who does the heavy lifting, courtesy of two dense verses packed with references to his personal travails, from love and marriage to taxes, the recession and, way before it was a thing, a line about a tall freak who “wouldn’t protest with me at Wall Street.” “I never wanted you to be my man/ I just need your company,” Winehouse croons over a loping beat, skittering drums and subtle strings and flute. “Don’t want to get dependent on/ Your time then lose the way you love me/ Like smoke, I hung around.” Then it’s Nas’ turn, as the MC breaks off his first rapid-fire verse: “It’s not a movie, this is not a script or proofread/ I’ll spit some untruths to dumb fools and groupies/ Fun to punctuate, pronunciate the funds I make.” The rapper, who split with wife Kelis in 2009, then appears to get personal, rhyming, “Like a polygamist, with a twist/ Will I marry again? Maybe, I guess/ I hold a lady’s interest, I just me/ The love scholar, she the teacher’s pet.” Nas and Winehouse were pals from way back, with the singer name-dropping her New York friend on the track “Me and Mr. Jones” from her breakthrough Back to Black album. Though a press release about the album said the song was tracked as far back as early 2008, Nas’ second verse feels ripped from the headlines . “Yo, this recession is a test/ It’s affecting my complexion/ Misdirection my affection/ My concerns are bill collections,” he rhymes, going on to complain about the tax man coming after him and some impropriety on the part of his money handlers. “Evaluate the world bank trusts like I’m IEG,” he adds. “Tall freak, she wouldn’t protest with me at Wall Street/ She says, no, you’re so deep.” He ends his second verse with a tribute to Winehouse, rapping, “NYC to U.K. I might stay there/ Everybody in the club tonight say, ‘Yeah’/ You know how me and Amy are, straight players.” On Thursday (November 3), Hot 97 also premiered another track from the album, “Our Day Will Come,” Amy’s funky reggae take on the 1960s doo-wop tune by Ruby & the Romantics. Winehouse died in July at age 27 as a result of excessive alcohol intake. Some of the proceeds from the sales of the album will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity set up by the singer’s family to fight addiction. What do you think of the new Winehouse songs? Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ Makes Hot 100 History

Latest #1 moves her ahead of Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson on the all-time list, with Whitney Houston and Madonna within reach. By James Montgomery Rihanna on the set of her “We Found Love” video Photo: Photopress Belfast/Splash News Rihanna may have pushed the boundaries with her video for “We Found Love,” but thanks to that song, she’s now pushed her way into the history books — and passed a pair of all-time greats in the process. “Love” just completed its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her 11th #1 hit, which puts her one ahead of Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson. With her latest chart-topper, she’s now tied with Whitney Houston and is within reach of equaling Madonna and the Supremes’ career total of 12 #1’s. If — or, more likely, when — she gets her 12th, she’ll trail only Michael Jackson (13 #1’s), Elvis Presley (17), Mariah Carey (18) and the Beatles (20) on the all-time list. Rare company, indeed. And just as impressive is how quickly she’s accomplished all this. Earlier this month, when “Love” leapt from #16 to #9 on the Hot 100, RiRi made Billboard history by racking up 20 top 10’s faster than any solo artist , doing it in just six years and four months. That bested a mark previously set by Madonna, who did it in six years and nine months and ranks Rihanna second to only the Beatles, who pulled off the feat in a staggering two years and seven months. Rihanna is the 14th artist to ever earn 20 Hot 100 top 10’s and is just the fifth woman to do it. Madonna leads everyone with 37 top 10’s, followed by Carey and Jackson (27 each) and Whitney Houston, with 23. What do you think about Rihanna’s chart accomplishment? Let us know in the comments! U.S. Court of Appeals Tweaks Janet Jackson’s Nipple [PICS]

Ok, so no one doffed their top in the judge’s chambers. But the 3rd U.S. Court of Appeals in Philadelphia did take a fine-toothed comb today to the FCC decision fining CBS $550,000 for the exposure of Janet Jackson ‘s suckle stalk. Ruling 2-1, the court declared that while the FCC does have the authority to crack down on “indecent images” like Janet’s milk nozzle, the commission acted unfairly by changing its policy towards nippage after the slippage fact and thus the fine was issued in error. In case you were in a coma in 2004, Janet’s top “malfunctioned” during a Super Bowl halftime performance with Justin Timberlake , causing one bejeweled baby button to be briefly exposed on national television. While Mr. Skin was delighted, legions of killjoys were not, and the “Nipplegate” (sk)incident led to a widespread crackdown on nip slips, raunchy song lyrics, sexually suggestive storylines, and everything else that makes network TV worth watching. Celebrate boobs, justice and the American way with some notable live TV nip slips after the jump!

Janet Jackson Says Kevin Garnett Was Tryin’ To Smash Back In The Day… Talks Nicki Minaj Wardrobe Malfunction

Damn… KG couldn’t get no love and JD got to hit that? Janet Jackson is making her way to Minneapolis Friday as part of her “No. Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour” (her first tour since Michael’s death) and the singer spoke candidly with their local Star Tribune about a plethora of interesting topics, including how former Minnesota Timberwolves player Kevin Garnett tried to get a piece and her thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s recent “wardrobe malfunction.” Check out the excerpts below: Janet Jackson knows her way around the Twin Cities, since she recorded most of her hits here with producer/songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. However, she hasn’t been here lately; Jam and Lewis moved to Los Angeles several years ago and she hasn’t worked with them since her “20 Y.O.” album in 2006. Jackson, 45, agreed to answer some questions via email. Her answers were short and sweet, punctuated with emoticons. She didn’t give direct or in-depth responses about such controversies as her lip-syncing in concert and her infamous 2004 Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction but she did address them. Q: What will it be like to perform all your hits in Minneapolis, where so many were written and recorded? A: It is going to be fun for me! I can’t wait to get back to Minneapolis and see all my fans there. Q: What’s your favorite memory of Minneapolis? A: I have so many, but being in Minneapolis to record “Control” stands out. It was the first time I was recording a CD without my family. It was a great. Q: I heard some guys stalked you by your hotel when you were recording “Control” in 1985. What’s that story? A: “Nasty” is the story for that question. That song came out of that experience. Q: What did Kevin Garnett say to you later after you brought him onstage at Target Center for the seductive “Rope Burn” in 1998? A: Kevin Garnett wanted to hook up. :0) Q: What do you like most about this tour? The least? A: I am having so much fun on this tour. It is the largest ever world tour for me. Whenever possible, I am choosing more intimate venues. I love being able to see everyone’s face in the audience. Q: What is it like to perform “Scream” without your brother Michael? A: It is amazing. It’s very therapeutic. The energy of the song is fierce but it makes me smile inside when I hear him, when I hear his voice. Q: What goes through your mind onstage on this tour vs. what went through your mind onstage during your arena tours? A: All I can think about during the show is how much fun I am having and how grateful I am to all the fans who have supported me all these years. Q: Why do you end the show with “Together Again”? A: I love what the song says… I am letting the audience know that we will be together again… hopefully soon! Q: Over the years, some people have said that Janet lip-syncs in concert. What’s the situation on this tour? Is all your singing live? A: Yes, I am singing live. WOW… 1998??? They went all the way there with it. Glad Janet got a chance to clear up the lip synchin rumors though. Keep reading for more…

Sugarland Plan Indiana State Fair Memorial

Band sends out prayers for ‘peace and healing’ families of five killed and dozens injured in Saturday’s stage collapse. By Jocelyn Vena Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles (file) Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Following last Saturday’s stage collapse before their scheduled concert at the Indiana State Fair , Sugarland have announced they will hold a memorial to honor the five killed and dozens injured in the accident. The band announced on their website that they are working on a memorial. “We are in the process of planning a private memorial in Indiana to honor those fans who died. We would first like to hold space so that their families can have time to go through their own services and memorials. Until that time we are holding vigil for them,” they wrote. “We join them on their mourning benches. And we stand in the gap asking God to offer them peace and healing. For those suffering from injury we hold you up with prayers for complete healing of your own.” In addition to their plans to honor those lost and injured, Sugarland also announced they will resume their tour later this week. “We are also addressing our own specific healing,” the statement continues. “Our road family experienced its traumas together. While we all scattered to our given families for their comfort, the trauma we experienced together binds us in a unique way that we share only with each other, and those who were there. There is healing in our being together. There is healing in our working together. For this reason we are planning to get back on the road this weekend, beginning with our scheduled show in Albuquerque this Thursday, August 18th. The emotions have us yearning to be close to each other immediately. The logistics have us needing to replace all of our instruments and equipment. (The set is a loss that is insignificant in light of the tragedy.)” A memorial service was held on Monday at the fairgrounds where the accident took place. According to USAToday.com , 500 people attended the service, including Governor Mitch Daniels. The website for the fair, which reopened on Monday, announced that some shows, like the Train/Maroon 5 show, have been moved elsewhere on site, while Janet Jackson’s and Lady Antebellum’s performances have been canceled all together. Should Singers Romance Their Managers? [OPINION]

Read the original here:

In June of this year Amerie became the latest artist to become romantically involved with their manager or producer. The “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” singer wed her manager Lenny Nicholson joining a sorority that includes members like Janet Jackson , Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey ,  just to name a few. If that list of names gives you pause there may be good reason. Do relationships formed between artists and management or producers ever last?! Let’s take a stroll back and revisit former artist and manager/producer relationships. 1.)  Mariah Carey tried love with manager Tommy Mottola in 1993 when she was with Sony and Tommy worked with Mariah on her successful album Music Box . Music Box has sold over 32 million album worldwide, such great success together! However, Tommy and Mariah eventually divorced in 1997. 2.) Nivea and The Dream , these two lovebirds worked together on two of her  albums  Complicated and  Animalistic. The latter was only released in Japan. The two fell in love and had three kids,  but were divorced in 2007. 3.) The Dream and Christina Milian started to develop content for her fourth album Elope in 2009 where Christina signed under Radio Killa Records. Unfortunately, Elope has never been released and we’re still waiting on that fourth album. Married in 2009 and divorced in 2010 they did not hit the two year mark at least! The Dream has a thing for singers, first Nivea and then it was Christina. Nivea may have gotten the better end of this deal because she actually had released album from The Dream– Christina has none. What singer can we guess will be next for The Dream? (Rihanna?) 4.) Andre Lyon (Dre of Cool & Dre) and Christina Milian were an item before Christina tied the knot with The Dream. Nick Cannon and Christina Milian had just broken up and Christina was working on her third studio album in 2006, So Amazing . Cool and Dre were able to produce 10 out of the 11 tracks which meant lots of personal time for Christina and Dre to fall in love. They were a photogenic couple that only lasted until February of 2009. 4.) Latoya Jackson ( yes she does exist ) married manager Jack Gordon in 1989 and the marriage wasn’t sweet.  He seemingly kidnapped her from her family and that ‘marriage’ finally ended sometime in 1997. Jack managed her poorly and is said to be the reason why her fame declined in the late 80s and early 90s. For example, Jack was the reason why she did those psychic reading commercials. 5.) Tina and Ike Turner had one bad time as a couple and we are always reminded of that in the film What’s Love Go to Do With It . Ike was physically abusive and took complete control of her career and life until Tina had her epiphany and said ‘no more.’ 6.) Janet Jackson & Jermaine Dupri ‘s relationship came as a surprise to many. Janet fell in love with J.D in 2000 or 2001 (no one knows exactly when they got together) and broke up in 2009 after a nine year relationship. J.D worked on a few of Janet’s albums producing and writing, but it was not enough to keep them together. This was not the first time Janet mixed business and pleasure. Ms. Jackson had a secret marriage to Rene Elizondo back in 1991 but separated in 1999. Rene wrote songs for albums such as Rhythm Nation 1814 and Velvet Rope. Rene also directed the video for “That’s The Way Love Goes,” “Together Again” and “Again.” 7.) Puff Daddy (or Diddy, if you insist) and Jennifer Lopez had a romantic relationship starting in 1999 after working on a few of her albums. J-Lo and Puffy worked together on her album  On The 6, J Lo and J Lo: The Remixes . While the two didn’t get married they had a high profile relationship that  ended in February 2001. J-Lo then decided to marry her back-up dancer Chris Judd in 2001. Why date your back-up dancer when you were with Puff? This relationship was a downgrade that lasted a whole nine months. 8.) Swizz Beatz and  Mashonda had a very long marriage until a certain singer came along (Alicia Keys). Swizz produced Mashonda’s debut album January Joy back in 2005 that was only released in Japan. Mashonda was also featured on a few of Swizz’s projects such as “Get No Better” and “Bellybutton” by Cassidy and “Love Is Blind” and “Gotta Man” for Eve.  Wedding bells rang in 2004 and officially stopped ringing in 2010. Not that things will necessarily end poorly with Amerie and her new love Lenny Nicholson but it’s very much in the air. We can either get great work for the next album or a whole lot of nothing and babies. (I Love You A !) Good luck on this journey! Sound off on who else you think should be on the list!
