Jason Bateman Calls ‘Arrested Development’ Movie Plot ‘Incredible’

‘It’s everything you would want it to be and more,’ actor tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jason Bateman Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Despite David Cross’ hilariously pessimistic outlook on the possibility of an “Arrested Development” movie, exec producer Ron Howard wasn’t kidding when he told MTV News that an adaptation of the TV series is “a real priority” for creator Mitch Hurwitz. How do we know? Well, aside from just really, really hoping he wasn’t kidding, Jason Bateman recently tossed us some info that indicates Hurwitz is very much plowing forward with a script — five years after the show’s cancellation. “For the very first time, [Hurwitz] sat me down last week to talk about what he’s got and where he’s going and what do I think,” Bateman told us while promoting his upcoming comedy “Paul.” “As a fan of the show, I was vibrating with excitement that he was pulling me behind the curtain.” Mind you, Bateman still hasn’t seen a single page of a script, but the mere fact that he had a meeting about the project was enough to encourage the actor that, at long last, an “Arrested” movie will actually become a reality. “I can confirm what his update was, which was that he is very deep into the work on it,” Bateman said. “The odds of him getting it done before the end of the year, as he says he wants to, are good.” So, um, what did Hurwitz actually dish about the story line? Bateman didn’t let any details slip out other than to say the concept is “incredible.” “It’s everything you would want it to be and more,” he added. “I really hope he finishes soon so we have a shot at doing it before the end of the year.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Paul.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Judd Apatow, HFPA Not Fans of Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Roasting

Much is being made today about Ricky Gervais’ performance as host-cum-roastmaster at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. Here at Movieline HQ, we’re firmly on Team Ricky, and it seems like we’re not alone — celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Jason Bateman praised the unctuous Brit for his ribald comedy. But that doesn’t mean everyone enjoyed the public celebrity berating — just ask Judd Apatow and the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Kevin James To Star In Mixed Martial Arts Film

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ star will play a physics teacher moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. By Adam Rosenberg Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Mall cop Paul Blart, better known as Kevin James , is trading in his security uniform for boxing trunks. The actor is all set to go another round with Sony — after “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Grown-Ups” and 2011’s “The Zookeeper” — for a mixed martial arts movie. James will star in the as-yet-untitled feature as a physics teacher who decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter when the school he works for faces budget cuts, Deadline reports. Whatever his initial intentions are, the main character proves talented enough to land a gig as a fighter in the UFC. Sony is reportedly fast-tracking the film to shoot next year, presumably for a 2012 release. James will also produce with Todd Garner (“Blart” and “Knight and Day”), and the script comes from Allan Loeb (“The Switch”). The actor also has a role in another Loeb-scripted comedy, early 2011 release “The Dilemma,” directed by Ron Howard and starring Vince Vaughn, Winona Ryder and Channing Tatum alongside James. “The Zookeeper” opens next summer, starring James as the titular caretaker, an overweight, lonely guy who decides to get out into the world and meet someone. Seeing this, the animals at the zoo he so loves reveal their great secret — they can talk — and, in doing so, teach their friend how to get his groove on. Rosario Dawson stars as the live-action female lead. The film also features the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, Cher and others. Loeb has been busy promoting a pair of 2010 releases that he scripted, the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Aniston-starring rom-com “The Switch” (which he also produced) and the soon-to-be-released long-awaited sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” In addition to “The Dilemma,” Loeb also worked or is working on the upcoming Sandler/Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” actioner “Protection” and high-profile reboot/remake “Escape From New York.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘The Expendables’ Defeat ‘Vampires’ At Box Office

Stallone’s ’80s-era action sendup continues to dominate, out-earning ‘Vampires Suck’ and other new releases. By Josh Wigler Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Randy Couture in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Expendables” ($16.5 million) #2 “Vampires Suck” ($12.2 million) #3 “Eat Pray Love” ($12 million) #4 “Lottery Ticket” ($11.1 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($10.1 million) Goofy vampires, lucky lottery winners, killer piranhas, quirky nannies and generous sperm donors all failed to capture box-office gold over the weekend thanks to the staying power of a pack of old action heroes who are apparently not past their prime. Actor, director and screenwriter Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables” remains the top dog at the box office, emerging from its second straight weekend victory with $16.5 million to its name. Featuring an all-star lineup of action icons both new and old, “The Expendables” has earned $64.9 million domestically in just 10 days. Given the film’s success, Stallone and his heavily muscled compadres are already thinking about story ideas for an “Expendables” sequel. The repeated success of “The Expendables” comes in the midst of a particularly crowded session at the box office, with five new wide releases arriving this past weekend. Of these movies, parody flick “Vampires Suck” fared the best, winning a second-place medal worth $12.2 million from Friday through Sunday. The “Twilight” spoof has earned $19 million since opening on Wednesday, clearing almost its entire production budget of $20 million in less than a week. Although it hasn’t quite lived up to its title, “Lottery Ticket” proved a worthwhile investment for Warner Bros. with an $11.1 million fourth-place finish, a solid start towards recouping its reported $17 million production budget. The rest of the newcomers didn’t land quite as well, with “Piranha 3D” scoring the best at sixth place. Emma Thompson’s “Nanny McPhee” sequel arrived in seventh place with $8.3 million, while the romantic comedy “The Switch,” starring Jennifer Anitson and Jason Bateman, fell flat on its face with an $8.1 million eighth-place debut. Upcoming Releases “Takers” and “The Last Exorcism” could give “The Expendables” some trouble, but the “Avatar: Special Edition” re-release could pose even greater problems for every competitor at the box office next weekend. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables” and “Vampires Suck.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
