‘The Switch’: Fluid Situation, By Kurt Loder

Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and the search for a kid in a cup Jason Bateman in “The Switch” Photo: Miramax “The Switch” is set in that fantasy Manhattan, familiar from Woody Allen movies, in which everyone seems to be a highly compensated white professional and all ethnic coloration has been drained away. The movie wants us to care about these people’s problems — which include things like imaginary medical maladies — but many viewers may wish that such trifling complaints were the only ones they had. Jennifer Aniston plays Kassie Larson, a top TV producer who’s facing 40 and desperate to have a child. Jason Bateman is Wally Mars, a stock trader who was once Kassie’s boyfriend but is now simply her best pal — although of course he still secretly pines for her love. Kassie has never found the right guy to have a family with, so she’s decided to go the artificial-insemination route. She’s found the ideal donor in a guy named Roland (Patrick Wilson), who’s both a hearty jock and an assistant professor of feminist theory at Columbia University. Obviously Mr. Right, at least for purposes of impregnation. Do women desirous of offspring actually throw “I’m Getting Pregnant” parties at which their chosen sperm donor arrives bearing baby juice in a plastic cup? Kassie does. Unfortunately, Wally is among the many friends in attendance, and he gets drunk, stumbles into the bathroom, finds Roland’s cup, accidentally spills its contents, and then — using a magazine photo of Diane Sawyer for stimulation — brings forth his own seminal contribution, which he leaves to be passed off as Roland’s. Wally is so drunk that the next day he doesn’t remember doing this. Two weeks later, Kassie announces she’s pregnant. She relocates to Minnesota to raise the child she’ll soon be having. Seven years later she returns to New York with her little boy, Sebastian (Thomas Robinson). She reconnects with Wally — who’s still in the dark about what he did at the party that night, and doesn’t realize Sebastian is his son — but also with Roland, who quickly develops a romantic interest in her. And so forth. Romantic comedies aren’t often an arena for violence, but this one’s different — the movie’s script continually manhandles its characters into situations of brazen implausibility. The picture does have some funny moments, mostly provided by Jeff Goldblum, as Wally’s distracted boss (Goldblum always seems to have another, more interesting conversation going on in his head while he’s delivering his character’s lines); and by Juliette Lewis, who enlivens a few scenes with her blowsy, wisecracking energy. (“I’ve had orgasms that last longer than his relationships.”) And Robinson is unusually engaging as little Sebastian — he’s a cute kid with a surprisingly wry intelligence. It’s too bad that Bateman, so expert at underplaying comic characters, has a character here that’s so thinly conceived it can’t bear much underplaying. Wally — who exhibits none of the sharkish

REVIEW: Jason Bateman Comes Into His Own in The Switch

Despite the movie’s ad campaign, The Switch isn’t Jennifer Aniston’s movie, and even she seems to know it. This picture belongs to Jason Bateman, who, after years of playing the second or third banana (and plenty of times being the best thing in a given film), finally gets to show off his considerable gifts as the co-lead in a mainstream comedy. To watch him in The Switch, standing at the stove making pancakes (a lice-proof plastic shower cap pulled over his hair — don’t ask), or bringing the grace of a Gene Kelly routine to a bit in which, hung over, he barfs into an office waste-can, is to see a particular kind of comic intuition at work. For Bateman, there’s no distinction to be made between high and low comedy — he brings neurotic elegance to everything he does.

‘Switch’ Stars Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman Debate Donating Bodily Fluids

‘I’d have to say sperm,’ Aniston says at film’s L.A. premiere about which is the sexier donation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Jennnifer Aniston at the premiere of “The Switch” Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images In Jenifer Aniston’s new comedy, “The Switch,” her character Kassie Larson decides to have a child all on her own. And when her best friend, played by Jason Bateman, switches his sperm for her donor’s Roland (Patrick Wilson), craziness ensues. All that frank talk of those little plastic cups had MTV News wondering one thing at the film’s L.A. premiere: Which gift of life is it sexier to donate: blood or sperm? The cast was pretty evenly split by the somewhat icky decision.

Late Night Highlights: Eli Roth Burns Martin Brest, Jason Bateman Teases Arrested Shooting Date

Jason Bateman returned to the late night circuit last night to continue hawking The Switch , even if that meant criticizing the odd marketing choices made by the studio. Meanwhile, Eli “Bear Jew” Roth outed Martin Brest as an insensitive director to his stand-ins, Anna Paquin introduced George Lopez to the “sn*tch patch,” David Duchovny celebrated an Ecuadorian holiday and Stephen Colbert celebrated an airline hero.

Her? Jennifer Aniston Not Starring in Arrested Development Movie, Says Jason Bateman

Famed line-cutter Jason Bateman needs to be more careful about what he says regarding the probably-never-happening Arrested Development movie. While promoting The Switch over the weekend, Bateman told MTV News that there was a “real good part” in the film for his current co-star, Jennifer Aniston. So does this mean Aniston will appear in the Arrested Development movie?! No, not really.

Jennifer Aniston May Join ‘Arrested Development’ Movie, Jason Bateman Says

The actor says he plans to suggest a role for Aniston in the much-anticipated project. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kara Warner Jason Bateman Photo: MTV News If it were up to Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston would appear in the much-anticipated big screen adaptation of a popular television show. But, the actor isn’t thinking of sending the “Friends” actress back to Central Perk. Bateman said he plans to rope Aniston into the “Arrested Development” flick. “Yeah, actually, there’s a real good part for her in the ‘Arrested Development’ movie,” Bateman told MTV News on Saturday (August 7). Aniston and Bateman have been spending a lot of time together as co-stars in both “The Switch,” a rom-com about a sperm donor mix-up, and the upcoming flick, “Horrible Bosses.” Even though Bateman thinks Aniston would fit right in among the delightfully absurd “Development” crew, he said the A-lister will have to prove herself to get the part. “There’s no offers on this one. She’s gonna have to sing for her supper,” Bateman said. “I don’t know, we’ll see if she’s available. She’s busy. She’s pretty famous; I don’t know if you’ve heard of her. She’s pretty backed up. Hopefully the guy who’s in charge will like her for that part because I’m going to suggest her.” Bateman didn’t give up any other details about the role but all of this casting talk means the “Arrested Development” movie is definitely a go, right? Even though he’s scheming to get Aniston onboard, Bateman said several things still need to fall into place before production can get underway. “The truth is that there’s really is no significant update beyond … what [creator] Mitch Hurwitz said a couple weeks ago, which was he’s got half the script written. He’s gotta finish the second half and then the studio’s gotta love it and the cast’s gotta love it and we all have to … have time to do it,” Bateman explained. However, after years of speculation and doubts that “Development” will ever get off the ground, Bateman assured fans that the flick will hit theaters: “It’s happening,” he said. What do you think about Jennifer Aniston possibly joining the “Arrested Development” movie? Let us know in the comments below! Check out everything we’ve got on “The Switch.”
