Who Scored Big in Week 12 of SNL’s Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll?

This season of Saturday Night Live has been, at many times, a bit tired. Even the usually reliable political sketches have seen off. But I can’t remember the last time a season of SNL has seemed so energized by a group of new cast members — when they’re actually allowed on air. This past weekend, the featured players pretty much took over the last half of the show, and it may have been the best continuous half-hour stretch of the season to date.

James Franco Adds ‘Serial Killer’ To Already Packed C.V.

James Franco — perhaps history’s greatest multipurpose agent since baking soda — has agreed to star and to direct in a biopic of serial killer Richard Ramirez , also known as the Night Stalker (and, no, not the one that investigated monsters ). Ramirez terrorized Los Angeles in the mid-80’s, before being arrested and convicted of 13 counts of murder, 5 attempted murders and 11 sexual assaults. So, Oscars , Faulker and Cormac McCarthy , his line of fictional underwear , Sal Mineo , and a novel of addiction. He either is incredibly organized and incredibly tired, or has the best cocaine. SNL Scorecard: Did the Rookies Save Gwyneth Paltrow’s Show?

Last night’s Gwyneth Paltrow-hosted edition of Saturday Night Live used an interesting formula: The first half of the show featured mostly the established cast-members (Kristen Wiig even got to do that Kristen Wiig thing that she does, a rarity as of late), which has been, at best, hit or miss all season. Then, after a notably feisty “Weekend Update,” new featured players Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam and Paul Brittain, respectively, gave us three individual sketches that all killed. Were their efforts enough to make this a memorable show? On to the scorecard!

SNL Scorecard: Did Jeff Bridges Host the Best Show of the Year, Son?

Perhaps I’m in the holiday spirit (maybe), perhaps it’s the amount of wine consumed from back-to-back holiday parties (more likely), but last night’s Jeff Bridges-hosted installment of Saturday Night Live was, well, quite great. Not the laugh-out-loud funniest show of the season, but, from top to bottom, there wasn’t a whole lot of “bad.” I mean, it was so good that the best sketch of the night was the third to last of the show. Bridges, who last co-hosted in 1983 with his brother Beau, did an admirable job as host but, more importantly, did an admirable job of not getting in the way of a cast that was obviously on a mission before they took a break for the holidays.

January Jones Gets Naked For Versace

Mad Men star January Jones strips down to nothing but a Versace bag for the brand’s new spring / summer 2011 ad campaign, photographed by Mario Testino. “I am always on the lookout for the next Versace blonde. In January I feel I found the perfect Versace woman for the 21st century,” said Donatella Versace. “She is chic and elegant but deeply sensual too.” Pretty hard to disagree after seeing the ad … January Jones naked is not just for Jason Sudeikis anymore.

Who Scored Big in Week Eight of SNL’s Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll?

This week’s Robert De Niro-hosted episode was not a good time to be a featured player on Saturday Night Live — or even a regular cast member who struggles for airtime (ahem, Abby Elliott). Save for his monologue and a pretty awkward “Mr. Produce” sketch, De Niro was delivered A-material that did a pretty solid job at hiding his faults as a host — which, of course, also means we were given three (!) recurring sketches: “What Up With That?”, “Blizzard Man” and “Vinny Vedecci.” As this week’s poll clearly shows, it was a week for the veterans.

Introducing the SNL Scorecard: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Saturday Night

Saturday Night Live ‘s 36th season commenced last night with alumna Amy Poehler as host — Poehler’s first time in that role, making her only the fourth former female cast member to handle hosting duties. A lot of changes were made in the offseason: Abby Elliott and Bobby Moynihan joined the main cast; Will Forte moved on and Jenny Slate wasn’t invited back; Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah were all added as feature players. How did the new blood fare in their first episode? Not surprisingly, they weren’t seen much (though they did get a chance to briefly wave to the camera during the opening monologue… so that’s nice). Even more importantly, was SNL any good ? Movieline busted out its fresh new SNL Scorecard (along with the patented Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll) to make sense of it all.

‘Going The Distance’ Co-Stars Think Romance And Bromance Can Coexist

Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis share their philosophy on male friendships. By Kara Warner Jason Sudeikis Photo: MTV News As a rule, romantic comedies generally follow a pretty standard formula: Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl’s relationship is put to the test by brief bit of drama (overprotective potential in-laws, nosy friends, etc.), boy and girl live happily ever after. It’s typical and predictable, but also why we love rom-coms! The latest entrant into the beloved genre is this week’s “Going the Distance,” starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long as a new couple who try to make their relationship work while living on opposite coasts. The film also features the comedic stylings of Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”), who play a pair of buddies doing their best to keep their close friendship alive, while Long’s character tries to distance himself from his pals and make more time for his new romance. When MTV News caught up with the two funnymen at the film’s press day, we asked them to compare and contrast the complicated aspects of real-life guy friendship, a.k.a. bromance, and romance — and whether the two can exist at the same time. “Well, there’s a lot less sex in the bromance,” Day offered. “We’re bromancing each other, but we’re not bromancing each other in bed, so that’s different.” Sudeikis admitted that sometimes you need to put the bromance on the back burner. “At some point, you have to let your friend go and your romance will trump the bromance,” he said. “You have to let the little bird fly out of the nest.” “A romance and a bromance can happen at the same time — they’re not mutually exclusive,” Day added. “They can, they absolutely can. Sometimes people think that when the romance starts, the bromance ends, but that’s not true.” This comment prompted Sudeikis to theorize that it’s a bad sign if the guy friends in question have a problem with their friend’s new love interest. “If the bromance really has a negative reaction to the romance, it’s probably not a healthy romance,” he said. “There’s no reason a good romance can’t be perfectly bromantical,” Day added. “Yeah,” Sudeikis agreed. “Not all squares are rectangles.” “And not all rectangles are shapes,” Day said. There you have it, philosophies on love and bromance, courtesy of Sudeikis and Day.
