‘American Idol’ Is TV’s Top-Earning Series

Show raked in $7.1 million per half hour in 2010, while ‘Two and a Half Men’ comes in at #2. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson Photo: Tony Duran/ FOX Last year was a rocky one for “American Idol.” From the turmoil on the judging panel with uncomfortable short-timer Ellen DeGeneres (and the firing of Kara DioGuardi) to lackluster winner Lee DeWyze and the eventual departure of lead judge Simon Cowell, you’d think “Idol” would have suffered as a result. But, according to Forbes magazine, not only did “Idol” retain its ratings crown in 2010, it was also the biggest moneymaker on TV. The show brought in an astounding $7.11 million per half hour for the Fox network according to estimates tallied by the financial magazine. As big a number as that is, the figure was actually a 12 percent drop from 2009, but still enough to top the Forbes list of TV cash cows. Despite fears that the nearly wholesale changes on the judging panel and the debut of untested TV stars Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez at the desk might throw the ratings for “Idol” off this season, so far the show is holding steady. After initial ratings slumps in the audition episodes, the show is now down just 1 percent for the season and appears to be rebounding to its former heights. “Idol” was far-and-away the list leader on the Forbes tally, followed by the troubled “Two and a Half Men,” whose 2010 shows earned $2.89 million per half hour in what will now be remembered as former star Charlie Sheen’s final full season. Forbes predicted it will be hard to keep those numbers up without polarizing star Sheen, whom producers are reportedly looking to replace. The rest of the list includes: “Desperate Housewives” ($2.74 million), “Grey’s Anatomy” ($2.67 million), “Dancing With the Stars” ($2.67 million), “Lost” ($2.60 million), “The Big Bang Theory” ($2.50 million), “24” ($2.45 million), “Private Practice” ($2.32 million) and “Mike & Molly” ($2.11 million). Is Lauren Alaina the Only One?

Lauren Alaina was among the American Idol finalists who performed with the flu last night. But the resulting, smokey sound may have actually helped this 16-year old with her rendition of Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One.” Thanks to a confident stage presence and a well-trained voice, Alaina earned a wild ovation from the crowd, along with the label of a “shining star” from Steven Tyler. Said Jennifer Lopez, simply and accurately: “That’s staying true to the melody and framework of the song but still giving it your own flavor. Very good job.” Lauren Alaina – I’m the Only One

Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers Blasts To Top Of Billboard 200

Avril Lavigne’s long-awaited Goodbye Lullaby debuts at #4. By Gil Kaufman Lupe Fiasco Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Sometimes the hardest, bumpiest rides are the ones that get you to the sweetest destination. That’s the lesson Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco is basking in this week as he celebrates the #1 debut of his third album, Lasers. After a difficult, oft-delayed birth, the record will make its mark on the Billboard 200 next week when it takes over the top spot thanks to sales of more than 204,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That’s more than enough to end the two-week #1 reign of British soul singer Adele , whose 21 drops a spot to #2 as sales dipped to 133,000, giving her an impressive three-week total of more than 653,000. There are plenty of other debuts in the top 10 as well, including the latest “Glee” cast recording, Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (#3, 90,000), Avril Lavigne’s long-awaited Goodbye Lullaby (#4, 87,000), R.E.M. ‘s Collapse Into Now (#5, 57,000) and country singer Sara Evans ‘ Stronger (#6, 55,000). The rest of the top 10: Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#7, 46,000), Marsha Ambrosius , Late Nights & Early Mornings (#8, 41,000), Justin Bieber , Never Say Never – The Remixes (#9, 40,000) and NOW 37 (#10, 33,000). Just outside the top 10, rapper Raekwon cooks up a #12 debut for his latest solo effort, Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang (29,000), and “Tosh.0” comedian Daniel Tosh comes in at #28 with the CD of his comedy special, Happy Thoughts (15,000). Way down the line, heavily hyped English singer Ellie Goulding finally makes her American chart debut, sliding in at #129 with Lights (4,000). “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez continues to kill it on the iTunes singles chart, topping the tally with her comeback hit, “On the Floor,” followed by Katy Perry ‘s “E.T.,” Lady Gaga ‘s “Born This Way,” Britney Spears ‘ “Till the World Ends” and Rihanna ‘s “S&M.” A few fellas manage to break up the ladies’ club, with Cee Lo Green snagging the #6 position with “Forget You,” Ke$ha at #7 with “Blow,” Pink right behind with “F—in’ Perfect,” Dr. Dre and Eminem at #9 with “I Need a Doctor” and the cast of “Glee” rounding things out with “Landslide.” Lupe rules the iTunes albums chart as well, again besting #2 Adele, who’s in front of Lavigne, the “Glee” cast album, Mumford & Sons, R.E.M., Tosh, the Christian rock compilation Passion – Here for You, Evans and Ambrosius. Look for little change at the top next week, as new albums by Rise Against , Miranda Cosgrove and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker hit the charts. Ashthon Jones Says She Couldn’t Shake ‘Diva’ Label On ‘American Idol’

‘America didn’t think that,’ latest castoff tells MTV News of Jennifer Lopez calling her the ‘D’ word. By Jim Cantiello Ashthon Jones Photo: MTV News If there’s one thing Ashthon Jones learned from her brief-but-memorable journey on “American Idol,” it’s that America does not take kindly to the word “diva.” “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez called Ashthon the “D” word while raving about her semifinal performance, Monica’s “Love All Over Me,” but the Nashville native quickly realized that the term carries some negative connotations. “When J.Lo said it, I understood what she was talking about. You know how Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Whitney were divas but they were divas in a positive way? They were sweet and humble backstage, but when they got on the stage, they [showed] the world that they could do it,” Jones told MTV News on Monday (March 14). “America didn’t think that,” she laughed before sassily snapping her fingers. ” ‘Diva! Diva alert! … She thinks she’s all that!’ I was like, ‘Noooo!’ Nobody ever got to know the real me.” Ironically, Ashthon first made an impression on “Idol” for being anything but a diva. Jones lent her support to Hollywood Week group member Ashley Sullivan, who cracked under the pressure and threatened to walk off the show. In fact, Jones’ patience and positivity in Hollywood was in sharp contrast to other “Idol” singers’ backstabbing and whining. “That’s how we were. We prayed together. We grabbed each other, ‘Come on let’s pray.’ I’m a firm believer of spirituality and faith, and that’s how I live my life,” she said. Apparently, “Idol” fans have a very short memory. Jones acknowledges that picking a lesser-known Diana Ross song didn’t do her any favors, but she suggested the diva label may have been the big thing that kept viewers from getting to know the real Ashthon Jones With a Silent H (which might as well stand for “humble”). “When I get on the stage, I have to ask God for confidence,” she admitted. “You can’t be timid on ‘American Idol,’ because you’re gonna go home. I went home, but I went home top 13,” she said, proud of her accomplishments. Jones is champing at the bit to put more music out and hopes the connections made on “Idol” won’t go to waste. “Oh my goodness, if [Jimmy Iovine’s producers] call me? I can’t wait to see who I’m going to work with. I don’t know what the opportunities are, but I have a good feeling in my spirit that something’s gonna happen. This can’t be it.” Catch more of Ashthon’s interview with MTV News “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello on “Idol Party Live,” following Thursday’s results show on MTV.com! Nicki Minaj Says She’s Handed In A Verse For Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV

‘Wayne is definitely on his grind crazy right now,’ she tells MTV News of Weezy’s next project. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Audrey Kim Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News When Lil Wayne makes a request, Nicki Minaj delivers. Considering she quickly ascended to rap royalty after Weezy signed her to his Young Money roster, she owes the New Orleans rapper a debt of gratitude. Hip-hop’s Harajuku Barbie recently told MTV News that she has already recorded a verse for her mentor’s new album, Tha Carter IV, due later this year. “I recorded something for Carter IV, and I recorded something with the Birdman recently,” Nicki told MTV News. The Birdman she’s referring to is Bryan “Baby” Williams, Cash Money Records co-founder and CEO, and a recording artist in his own right. Baby’s new album, Bigger Than Life, is due this year as well. Minaj spoke confidently about Wayne’s next album, which has so far spawned a single and video in “6 Foot 7 Foot,” featuring Cory Gunz. “I think Carter IV is gonna just be exceptional, of course,” Nicki said. “I think Wayne is definitely on his grind crazy right now. But yep, my Carter IV verse has been handed in officially.” Over the weekend, “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez revealed that Wayne is featured on her next single “I’m Into You,” from her forthcoming Love? album. And on Monday (March 14), Wayne popped up on a rough version of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights (Remix)” that hit the Internet. As for Nicki and Weezy’s new song, fans may get a live preview soon. Minaj will be heading out on the road with Wayne, as well as Rick Ross, Mixmaster Mike and Travis Barker, for the I Am Music II Tour , which kicks off Friday in Buffalo, New York. Jennifer Lopez Features Lil Wayne On Next Single

‘I’m Into You’ will be next single off Love? album, which still has no release date. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Steven Tyler isn’t the only “American Idol” judge trying to make the most of a double dose of weekly prime-time exposure on TV’s biggest reality show. While Aerosmith’s back catalog has gotten a boost thanks to its prominent placement on “Idol,” fellow judge Jennifer Lopez has parlayed her spot on the program into the highest-charting single of her career with “On the Floor.” And over the weekend, she revealed that she’s got a strong follow-up single ready to go. Speaking with fans during an online chat , on Saturday, Lopez said she’s finished a song called “I’m Into You” with Lil Wayne that will be the next single from her still unscheduled Love? album. “My next single I believe will be a song called ‘I’m Into You’ and it’s going to feature Lil Wayne, so look out for that,” she said. Asked to name her favorite rapper, Lopez said it used to be Nas, but that these days she’s really feeling Weezy, whom she called a “very unique” and “fresh” voice. “Plus he’s on my single!” And though J.Lo did not have a specific release date to announce for the album, she said it would “probably” come out in late May, once two or three singles have hit radio. That would be perfect timing, of course, since “Idol” wraps in mid-May. Lopez, who has toured sporadically during her music career, also said that she planned to launch a world tour in support of Love? . Over the course of the two years she worked on the new album, Lopez said she also recorded Spanish-language versions of some of the songs, and plans to release a full-length Spanish album next. Asked what the hardest part of being a judge on “Idol” this season has been so far, Lopez said, “I didn’t expect that it would be such an emotional roller coaster for me.” She also admitted that saying goodbye to the departing contestants has been very difficult for her.
