President’s Day Weekend Receipts: Safe House Leads Lucrative Holiday

It was indeed a very happy President’s Day Weekend in Hollywood, where studios enjoyed the rare treat of five wide February releases raking in $20 million or more. The bad news? The two newest ones brought up the rear. Sorry, Nicolas Cage and Reese Witherspoon — your Holiday Weekend Receipts are here. [All figures are four-day weekend estimates.] 1. Safe House Gross: $28,40,000 ($82,600,000) Screens: 3,121 (PSA $9,100) Weeks: 2 (Change: -29.3%) There are a few big winners among this weekend’s successes, but I’ll go with Ryan Reynolds as the biggest: On the one hand, the guy can’t open anything no matter how desperately his agents or producers want him to be able to. On the other, there is no better box-office second fiddle alive short of maybe Jeremy Renner, who wouldn’t hold that distinction for long anyway with both The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy on deck to refine both his blockbuster ensemble and leading-man creds. So go on, Hollywood! Let Reynolds back up your 57-year-old action star today! 2. The Vow Gross: $26,600,000 ($88,527,000) Screens: 2,958 (PSA $8,993) Weeks: 2 (Change: -35.4%) Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams aren’t shabby performers, either, both en route to their leading their first non-franchise $100 million grosser. Unless The Vow 2 is en route starring a certain rat and a churro , which I’m not sure counts, but you tell me. 3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Gross: $26,400,000 ($59,516,000) Screens: 3,500 Weeks: 2 (Change: -3.4%) There’s no doubt that just scraping below $60 million in 10 days of release is a let-down for all involved (except for Michael Caine, I guess, as long as the check cleared), but a 3.4 percent drop? Yowza . Not bad at all, especially opposite… 4. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Gross: $25,700,000 (new) Screens: 3,174 (PSA $6,397) Weeks: 1 I don’t know where this creative development lands Nicolas Cage on his quest to become screen acting’s version of Led Zeppelin . Maybe it would be easier to break it down to Zeppelin song-title analogues, like, “What Is and What Should Never Be” or “Sick Again.” Any others? 5. This Means War Gross: $20,400,000 (new) Screens: 3,189 (PSA: $6,397) Weeks: 1 Needs less Pine , more pudding . [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Jeremy Renner Escapes Crazy Thailand Stabbing Brawl Without Using Bourne Skills

According to the Phuket Gazette, Bourne Legacy star Jeremy Renner was maybe-sorta (okay not really) involved in an insane-sounding bar brawl this week in Thailand in which an associate was attacked and stabbed by a host of bar employees. Oh, I’m sorry: Bar employees wielding knives and a freaking homemade battle axe . But fear not! It seems Renner, most recently seen in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and currently in Thailand shooting his Bourne flick, hightailed it out and escaped unscathed . Wish we could say the same about his reported acquaintance, one Vorasit Issara, who took injuries to his stomach and neck in the melee. [ Phuket Gazette , ETonline ]

Jeremy Renner ‘Not Injured’ In Bar Fight

A rep disputes a report to MTV News that the ‘Mission Impossible’ actor was injured in Thailand. By Jocelyn Vena Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” star Jeremy Renner is just fine. Despite previous reports, the actor’s rep confirmed to MTV News that he was not injured in a bar fight in Thailand. “Jeremy was there [but] was not involved,” a rep for the actor told MTV News. “When a fight broke out, he exited [and] was not injured.” The Phuket Gazette reports that Renner had been hanging out at the Rachada Pub in Phuket Town when six employees stabbed and injured two local men, Sri Panwa Resort General Manager Vorasit Issara and Maj Gen Chonasit, early Wednesday. The newspaper further reports that Renner had been in their company, along with Vorasit’s driver, Noppadon Preechawai, and several other friends. The Gazette originally reported that Renner had been injured in the scuffle. Prior to arriving at Rachada Pub, the group had also been spotted at two other local hotspots, KorTorMor Pub and another club near Royal Phuket City Hotel. The six men are currently being held by local authorities and addressed the media at a press conference on Thursday. The pub where the incident occurred has since been shut down for six months because it violated a local curfew. Renner has been in Manila, Philippines filming “The Bourne Legacy,” the actor’s rep said. He recently opened up to MTV News about filming “Legacy” and filling in the spot left vacant by the franchise’s longtime star, Matt Damon. “He’s always been so complimentary to me from the moment I met him. Such a great guy,” Renner said. “He’s a very, very complimentary, loving dude.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Bourne Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

It’s Double the Scarlett Johansson in New Russian Avengers Trailer!

Back in October, Marvel released the first trailer for Joss Whedon’s superhero supermovie Avengers , which will feature Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). My only complaint with the first trailer was that it didn’t give enough screen time to Scarlett Johansson ‘s Black Widow, whose role in the preview seemed to be limited to Sexy Background Extra in Black Spandex. Now, a foreign trailer finally gives Johansson’s Black Widow — one of the only females in the male-dominated superhero industry — an actual speaking part. The only problem… is that here, the lines are in Russian. Did I mention there aren’t captions either? Well, who needs captions to understand what is happening: Robert Downey, Jr. delivers some quippy dialogue, Captain America throws a shield, the Avengers bust a lot of bad guys and in the process, a lot of sh*t is blown up.

Jeremy Renner on Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise’s Action Advice and The Bourne Legacy

After earning back-to-back Academy Award nominations — in 2010, for his breakout role in Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and in 2011, for his supporting part in Ben Affleck’s Boston crime drama The Town — Jeremy Renner decided to dive headfirst into the action genre with four consecutive big-budget action projects. The first, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , which co-stars Renner as a mysteriously overqualified IMF agent assisting Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt on his latest globe-sweeping assignment, premieres this weekend in IMAX. The next three films, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters , The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy , will all hit theaters next year, making the California-raised actor the busiest action star of 2012.

What to Expect From Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’s Wild IMAX Action Sequences

This December 16, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol premieres in IMAX five days in advance of its general release. Why exactly? Probably to encourage fans of the Tom Cruise franchise to see the picture in the large format director Brad Bird intended when he shot thirty minutes-worth of the fourth Ethan Hunt film in IMAX. To convince journalists that the large format is indeed worth higher ticket prices, an advance release date and a little early buzz, Paramount screened about 20 minutes worth of wild action sequences at the Rave 18 theater in Los Angeles last week. Ahead, the stomach-flipping details (and very mild spoilers).
