President Obama established this week, when he misspelled the name of Aretha Franklin’s hit song R-E-S-P-E-C-T, that A-B-C is not as easy as 1-2-3 after all. At the Women of Soul concert series, which is being hosted at the White House, the P-O-T-U-S spoke of the impact of artists on the fight for equality. However, when Obama went to quote Aretha Franklin’s famous song “Respect,” during which she spells out the word so memorably, he left out one letter. When you ask Dear Abby for advice, be sure you’re ready to hear it. Recently a couple wrote to the long-running column (currently penned by Jeanne Phillips, daughter of the original Abby) complaining that their new neighborhood was a little more…diverse than they were used to. “Two couples in the neighborhood are gay — one male, one female. While they are nice enough, my husband and I did not include them when it was our turn to host because we do not approve of their lifestyle choices,” wrote ‘Unhappy in Tampa’. “Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that we are bigots!” You don’t say. First Abby points out that “lifestyle choice” might be the wrong word: “Gay people don’t choose to be gay; they are born that way. They can’t change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual.” Then she mentions the crazy hypocrisy in excluding people only to then complain you’re being excluded. She closes with a less-than-gentle suggestion: “From where I sit, you may have chosen the wrong place to live because it appears you would be happier in a less integrated neighborhood surrounded by people who think the way you do.” In other words, if you don’t like the neighbors, you’re the ones who need to beat it.

It’s not too often that we get to see Jessica Simpson ‘s funbags around here anymore. I guess now that she’s had her second kid, she’s got more important things to do, like “mothering her children” or whatever.
