Joseph Kosinski tells MTV News, ‘There’s some stuff in this film that people maybe aren’t expecting.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Joseph Kosinski Photo: MTV News For those “Tron” fans who’ve been waiting patiently for the release of “Tron Legacy” — a semi-sequel more than 20 years in the making — the day has arrived! Starting Friday (December 17), Jeff Bridges (playing two roles, no less) can now be seen in theaters nationwide. Given the original film’s storied and groundbreaking history, MTV News asked first-time director Joseph Kosinski what reactions he hopes “Legacy” viewers will have. “Hopefully, people will have the same reaction I did when I saw the first ‘Tron,’ ” Kosinski said. “It looked different than anything else out there; it sounded different than anything else out there; it was bold in its concept and in the technology, the way it pushed technology,” he recalled. “So hopefully, audiences feel the same way about this film, because that’s what we tried to do.” Speaking of pushing the boundaries of technology and sound, “Legacy” is more than just your average popcorn flick. There are thematic elements that demand the audience’s attention in ways different from other films. Kosinski said that was one of his goals in continuing the story. “I can only make the film that I would want to see. I like films that challenge the audience,” he explained. “I like films that require you to pay attention, and there’s some stuff in this film that people maybe aren’t expecting, which to me are the most exciting parts.” For the astute viewer — or fans of films like “Blade Runner,” “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Star Wars” — a few of those exciting parts might feel just a bit familiar. “I was a child of the ’80s, so those are obviously films that made huge impressions on me,” Kosinski said. “I think every director is a combination, can cite influences from all the films, especially films you see as a kid, for whatever reason, those are the ones that impact you the strongest,” he added. “I think there are bits of all of those in here.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . By Jocelyn Vena One of Demi Lovato’s leaked photos Photo: BuzzMedia In photos of Demi Lovato that hit the Net, the Disney star is seen pulling her shirt down to reveal her cleavage, surrounded by a group of her friends, and also posing in just a bra. While the photos were published on the blog Anything Disney on Wednesday, other websites just picked them up Friday (December 17). Anything Disney posted an additional photo of Lovato, reportedly from the same night, where she is wearing a belly-baring top, pulling down her shirt and licking a female’s face. One of the women in the photos, donning orange/red hair and kissing Lovato’s shoulder, appears to be Alex Welch, the dancer Lovato allegedly punched before the singer/actress entered a treatment facility last month. Recently, Welch opened up about her incident with the teen star, noting that she was surprised when Lovato allegedly struck her. “I felt, honestly, I didn’t say anything and didn’t think twice about it,” Welch recalled. “We were on the plane with the Jonases having this awesome time, and I didn’t get a call or text from Demi or a ‘Hey, you got a problem with me,’ nothing. And she walks up and punches me and, literally, walked away and got in her seat. No one should walk up and do that and brush it over, it’s not right.” Kevin Jonas recently told MTV’s “The Seven” that he hasn’t spoken with his former tourmate recently. “I really haven’t had any contact [with her],” Kevin said. “Of course, we wish her well in her recovery.” Related Artists Demi Lovato

By Jocelyn Vena Michael Jackson Photo: GAB Archive/ Getty Images Jon Chu has become the go-to man for all things dance. And with the DVD for “Step Up 3D” hitting the streets on Tuesday, Chu is opening up about what it was like to direct the flick. He reveals that when Michael Jackson, who had such a major influence on modern dance, died during the making of the film, Chu and the cast and crew felt they had to pay homage to the King of Pop. “I remember particularly the House of Red Hook [scene] just because [we shot it] the day after Michael Jackson passed away and Michael had a huge impact on every single dancer,” he told MTV News. “I would say literally 99.9 percent of our dancers would say Michael is the #1 influence in their life and he passed [while] we were shooting and everyone was so upset. “Literally it shook us all, and the next day we were gonna go shoot the Battle at Red Hook. And so we got there and it was like there was an energy that was very stale and weird and nobody knew how to act,” he continued. “And so we just started playing Michael, first thing in the morning for like 15 minutes. We all danced to Michael on the dance floor. It was one of those beautiful moments.” While fans relive all the fun of the film in the comfort of their living rooms, Chu reminds them to check out the extras on the DVD. “The stuff that we really shot behind-the-scenes, in a way it’s a real documentary about the dancers in our movie,” he said. “We tried to squeeze as much as we could in the movie, but of course there’s only so much you can get in, so for the DVD, you get to see it all and you get to really know the dancers.” Wade Robson should take note. Variety reported on Friday (December 17) that the choreographer will direct the fourth installment in the franchise, with Chu on-board to executive produce the Miami-set flick. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Selena Gomez Photo: Angela Weiss/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Selena Gomez , “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester and “Glee” star Cory Monteith romped around Europe shooting their 2011 flick “Monte Carlo.” The three co-stars all happen to be singers as well. “I remember Leighton and I would sing on set on ‘Monte Carlo,’ and Cory would be like, ‘I just left “Glee,” ‘ ” Gomez recalled to MTV News over the weekend at Z100’s Jingle Ball . “And then he’ll sing with us too.” She added that she’d love the chance to work with Monteith again soon. “He loves singing,” she dished. “And I’d love to sing with him one day, because he’s got a great voice.” When she spoke to us about it earlier this year, Gomez said she was “thrilled” about the film, which revolves around three friends who go to Monte Carlo after one of them is mistaken for a British heiress, and revealed a bit about what fans can expect from her character. “I play Grace. And according to Taio Cruz , working on tracks for the pop star’s next album comes with quite a bit of pressure. “Yes, I am [writing for Justin],” the “Dynamite” singer confirmed to MTV News at Z100’s Jingle Ball on Friday . “I was just recently asked to work for Justin Bieber, so that should be good. “Yeah, he is a big deal,” Cruz added. “I don’t want to disappoint his fans — they can be angry little 12-year-olds. He’s fun. He’s young, so we’ll keep it in the right arena; just fun, young pop music.” So how did the collaboration between Cruz and Bieber come to be? Cruz explained, “Sometimes the label or someone or management will ask me to write something specifically and they’ll give me a few topics, a few things to focus on, and then we come up with ideas.” Not much is known about Bieber’s next album, but Justin did share with MTV News in September that it would “probably [come out] fourth quarter next year.” ” Drake is gonna be on that album ; I’m not sure [who else]. I’m gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there,” Bieber revealed. Aside from writing for Bieber, Cruz said that in 2011 he hopes to have a few more radio hits of his own after an impressive 2010. “I would say next year, just more good songs. Hopefully the fans (and new fans) enjoy the music as much as they are currently,” he said. “I’ve been working with so many amazing people — David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia — and producing more stuff myself, as well. Kardashian’s face time with the rap superstar was documented for the upcoming E! reality show “Kourtney and Kim Take New York,” and it also has generated a lot of rumors. Many gossip blogs began speculating that not only were Kim and Kanye dating, but that they also were expecting a little bundle of joy. The reality starlet laughed off the allegations when MTV News caught up with her at Z-100’s Jingleball in New York on Friday night. “My reaction is, ‘God, I’ve got to stay away from those hot dogs and nuts on the street corner and the ice cream!’ ” she explained. “Like those trucks, I’ve never seen that before — trucks of ice cream. You have to stop and eat! I couldn’t control myself, so [in] New York [I] put on like 10 pounds and then I’m pregnant with Kanye’s baby, so whatever! What can you do?! But recently their comedic jabs have gotten the ladies into a bit of hot water: Griffin for mocking Bristol Palin’s weight and Handler for making comments about Angelina Jolie’s love life . So when the two sat down on Handler’s E! talk show , they aruged that while people may take offense at their words, what they are doing isn’t bullying. “There’s a big difference between being a comedian and bullying,” Griffin said when she appeared on “Chelsea Lately” on Thursday night. The show’s host agreed, noting, “Bullying is being a bully to someone who’s defenseless, a poor little person who’s done nothing wrong, not the people who are a–holes. When you act irresponsibly and run around the world like Lindsay Lohan, you’re gonna get made fun of by me.” It’s not the first time Handler has defended her comedy. After footage of a recent act, during which she made some seething comments about Jolie, appeared online, she explained, “They were talking about me on ‘The View,’ talking about me and my Angelina Jolie tirade. Can I just say that I’ve been making fun of Angelina Jolie since she made out with her brother?” she remarked. “If I’ve learned nothing from this, it’s to write new jokes.” For those wondering what Handler’s beef is with Jolie, the comedian is pals with Jennifer Aniston, who was married to Brad Pitt before he hooked up with Jolie.

The guys have remained mum on the subject since Lovato left the tour, not addressing the matter until now, when they sent the singer/actress their well-wishes. “I really haven’t had any contact [with her],” Kevin said on “The Seven.” “Of course, we wish her well in her recovery.” On the subject of texting, host Julie Alexandria asked Kevin if the rumor was true that middle Jonas brother, Joe, texted Taylor Swift back in 2008 to end the pair’s relationship . “No, that is not true,” he answered about the two-year-old incident. “People have all their speculations, and she seems to talk about it in all her songs, so it’s fine.” All drama aside, Kevin dished a bit about what the brothers are working on and looked ahead to some of the projects he and his brothers are gearing up to get cracking on for the new year. “There’s a lot of really cool things happening, a lot of new TV, a lot of new music and a lot of buzz about Joe’s project , different things like that, so we’re really excited,” he said. “We’ll probably lock ourselves in the studio for a couple of months and make an album that we love and we’re proud of.” Related Artists Jonas Brothers
