Of course, while he might forever be remembered as the lovelorn Noah in “The Notebook,” he’s certainly weaving a different story about relationships in the darker “Blue Valentine.” So, does Gosling think fans of the sweeping Nicholas Sparks love story will find anything to relate to in this gritty, sexy new flick? “I think that ‘Blue Valentine’ is a nice companion piece to ‘The Notebook,’ because I feel like both are true,” he told MTV News. “That they’re both possible, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I feel like ‘Blue Valentine’ kind of picks up where ‘The Notebook’ leaves off.” While “The Notebook” deals with the courtship of two people who are head-over-heels for each other, “Blue Valentine” looks deeper at what happens after two people think they’ve gotten their happy ending. “There’s a huge period of time which isn’t in [‘The Notebook’]: The practical, day-to-day living with one another isn’t dealt with in that film,” he explained. “I would meet people when I did ‘The Notebook’ who would come up to me on the street and say, ‘That happened to me; that’s my parents story,’ because these people are saying that’s not realistic love, doesn’t really happen for people like that. “That’s not true, because I’ve met so many people that told me that that’s their story or their parents’ story,” he continued. “But I’ve also talked to a lot of people now that feel like this film is more about what it’s like the day to day, the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . During a news conference Thursday (November 9), the finalists revealed a star-studded lineup of collaborations, including Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Robbie Williams and will.i.am., for the final show of the season on Saturday. “We will be duetting with Robbie Williams,” judge Simon Cowell said on behalf of his five-member boy band One Direction. Asked how they felt about working with the British singer, one member was especially eager to collaborate with such a high-profile artist. “I’m a massive fan of Robbie,” Louis Tomlinson said. “In the U.K., he’s absolutely massive, and it’s an honor for us to get a chance to perform with him.” Another music sensation fans can expect to see grace the “X Factor” stage is Christina Aguilera. “I’m duetting with Christina Aguilera, and I’m very happy,” Rebecca Ferguson revealed. “She’s very talented and amazing.” Cher Lloyd announced that she’ll team up with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am for her performance. Lloyd’s mentor, British pop sensation Cheryl Cole, has worked with Will in the past and was excited for Cher. “I just told her she’s in a very, very fortunate position,” Cole said. “He’s the biggest superstar in the world. She knows how lucky she is. She’s excited. It’s right up her street.” Rihanna will bring her Caribbean flavor to a performance alongside Matt Cardle. “I’m going to sing the best I can this weekend and perform the best I can,” the contestant said. The two never confirmed a romance, but they were spotted a number of times hanging out together. So it’s no surprise that when Barbara Walters sat Bieber down for her “10 Most Fascinating People of 2010” special, airing Thursday, she asked him about the photos. “I was kissing her,” he said when asked by Walters what exactly was happening in the photos, in a preview that aired on “The View” on Wednesday (December 8). “Well, I was just, I don’t know, I was just kissing her. That’s about it.” Walters pressed the heartthrob further about the incident and asked him if he was at all surprised that the photos hit the Web. “I don’t know. I didn’t even know anyone was taking pictures,” he said. “It just kind of happened and I don’t know. It’s not really weird. Is it weird? I think every 16-year-old kisses a girl, right, so that’s not nothing out of the ordinary.” Finally, Walters wondered whether the photos meant that Bieber has one lady love in his life. “Are you dating?” she asked. Bieber responded with a no, adding, “It’s just a kiss.” Late last month, when Bieber was asked about his relationship status on the “Today” show , he was even more reluctant to give details, saying, “Um … pass. I pass.” When MTV News asked Bieber about his love life in September, just days before he was spotted with Villegas, he said he had too much on his plate already. “I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age,” he said. “Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl … we’re constantly traveling and one girl’s not gonna really [work]. You can’t really have one girl. I don’t really have any crushes at the moment. … Right now, the best thing is [that we’re] just teenagers having fun doing what we love. Rodriguez/ WireImage With nearly two months of married life under their belts, Katy Perry and Russell Brand are ready to take their relationship to the next level. No, no kids yet; but Perry will be taking Brand’s name, E! Online reports. The singer told Ellen DeGeneres all about it when she stopped by her talk show to tape an episode airing Wednesday (December 8). When asked if she would be adding a new last name to her already famous moniker, she responded, “I am, actually.” Perry says that many people have already taken it upon themselves to start calling her Mrs. Brand. “When people try to get my attention, like if I’m at an event or something like that, and they want special attention, they go, ‘Mrs. Brand!’ And I go shwoosh,” she said, turning her head. While married life is going well, it seems that Perry has some competition. “Yeah, she needs to step off my man,” Perry said of Brand’s frequent on-screen collaborator Helen Mirren. Perry added that she’s “very jealous” of Mirren, who appears in both “The Tempest” and the “Arthur” remake with her hubby. But perhaps having someone take Brand off her hands every once in a while isn’t a bad idea given that she says her funnyman spouse is “a handful.” “Actually I kind of don’t mind that someone else takes some of the responsibility because it’s a lot of work,” she said. “But handfuls are also a lot of fun. Actress tells MTV News she agrees with ‘Tourist’ co-star’s assessment. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News Johnny Depp recently shared with Vanity Fair that his “The Tourist” co-star Angelina Jolie has a very specific sense of humor. He told the magazine that his lovely leading lady in the film, which opens Friday, has what he calls “a wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor.” Noting that she was very “normal,” Depp likened Jolie’s personality to that of a certain screen legend’s, one that is a fitting choice, given that she’s rumored to assume the role of Cleopatra : “I’ve had the honor and the pleasure and the gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years,” he says in the magazine. “You sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she’s hilarious. Angie’s got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach.” When MTV News caught up with Depp, we tried to get him to clarify what he meant. He explained, “It can go in many directions. There’s a degree of certainly sophomoric kind of humor, but that always leads up to some sort of, unfortunately, some degree of scatological kind of interpretation.” While that didn’t really clear up what exactly makes Jolie such a jokester, the actress admitted to MTV News that Depp’s claim is valid: “It’s true. I will agree.” So, does Depp also have a perverse sense of humor? “Yes, he does,” Jolie revealed, adding that figuring out which of them is more perverse “was a part of the question during the film, but I don’t know if it was completely answered. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michelle Williams Photo: MTV News Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling have an NC-17-rated, rather-depressing love affair in their new, buzzy flick “Blue Valentine.” The film follows a married couple over the course of their relationship and boasts some graphic sex scenes to help weave the tale. So, is Williams nervous about her daughter, Matilda, checking out the film one day? “I’ve been thinking about that recently, the last couple days,” she told MTV News at a junket for the film. “I thought, ‘What would her reaction to that be?’ “I feel proud of this movie, and I feel like I could stand behind it when she grows up and says, ‘What were you doing for those two months in Pennsylvania?’ I feel like I could say, ‘This is what I made.’ ” The film, which opens on New Year’s Eve, may be too dark for a child to see, but much of Williams’ post-“Dawson’s Creek” work has been thought-provoking, something she said she’ll be proud to share with her daughter someday. “And I feel like that with most of my work now: I feel like I’m excited for the day when she’s old enough to see it, because my aim is to make her proud that the time I spent away from her wasn’t in vain,” she explained. The actress and her girlfriend, Tasya van Ree, walked the red carpet together at the GLAAD 25th anniversary party in Hollywood on Friday, making her sexuality public. She spoke about the decision to AfterEllen.com , saying, “I’m honored to be a part of GLAAD. I’ve long been a fan and long wanted to be a part of an organization as powerful, as influential and as important as GLAAD. I am acutely aware of the role that the media plays in influencing public opinion and influencing society, and with that awareness comes the burden of responsibility.” The actress went on to explain that her decision to come out has a lot to do with the fact that she doesn’t want anyone to feel like their sexuality is something to be ashamed of. “It’s hard,” she admitted. “I think GLAAD is one of the many reasons that I, as a 24-year-old, can come out. I think that organizations like GLAAD make that possible, because if it weren’t for opinions being changed, people being influenced, people being engaged to do the right thing, then there would be no prerogative for anyone to come out. Like I said, I can’t be a part of the problem. I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else, but I’m with who I’m with, I love who I love and I’m if not a better actress than I was yesterday and my personal life should have no effect on that. “I think that the injustice of people staying in the closet is more than I can bear with a clear conscience, and I couldn’t sleep at night if I was a part of that problem, if I was part of the lies,” she added. By Jocelyn Vena La Roux’s Elly Jackson Photo: MTV News La Roux had quite the 2010, thanks to the smash success of their track “Bulletproof,” which brought the dance group loads of new fans — including starlets and soldiers. “A few months ago, someone sent me a tweet that Kim Kardashian — and I only just found out who the Kardashians were — and they said she just tweeted, ‘This time I’ll be bulletproof.’ And she’s got this bullet bracelet on, and they said she tweeted that, and I was like, ‘Now that’s really weird,’ ” La Roux frontwoman Elly Jackson told MTV News. “The fact that it reaches people like that — which, when we were writing it in a living room in South London, we didn’t think it’d be reaching multimillionaires in L.A. — it doesn’t compute with me. So it is what it is. It has a universal quality.” It seems that Kardashian isn’t the only reality star with a love for La Roux: “Jersey Shore” star Snooki was spotted at a La Roux gig in New York last month. “I’ve never seen ‘Jersey Shore’ … apparently it’s quite a big deal!” Jackson laughed. “Bulletproof” and another La Roux hit, “In for the Kill,” have also become anthems for those fighting the good fight. “I think it’s like we were saying before about ‘In for the Kill,’ it’s one of those things you can take it to mean anything. I heard that amongst troops in Iraq, it was a really big song for them, obviously, because it’s like ‘Bulletproof’ … a great anthem for them. “But did I ever think anyone would take that song and make it mean that for them? Gaga broke the news to fan site Lady-Gaga.net that Born This Way ‘s first single will drop in February, and added that the album is like “bad kids going to church, having fun on a high level.” “I miss you guys so much,” Gaga said in a video posted on the website. “Thank you for all of your support and I cannot wait to play you Born This Way. It is killing me.” Gaga recently told a crowd in Poland , where she was on her Monster Ball Tour, that the album will be “the greatest album of this decade.” “I promise you, I’ll never let you down. And not for nothing: The album’s finished and it’s f—ing really good,” Gaga said from the stage. While no release date has been set for the album, there has been much discussion from her camp about what this album will sound like. Her manager has said it’s “incredible,” while her label boss, Akon, explained that Gaga is taking things to the “next level” with this album. “If I was going to compare it to her previous work, I would definitely say it’s a notch up,” he said. “It’s like she’s slowly taking you on to this journey down this road. If she were to just drastically do it, she probably would have lost everybody from the first album, but once the sound was created and established, now we can use that as a tool to grab all the monsters and walk them down this graveyard.
