Justin Bieber Is A ‘Prodigy,’ Usher Says

‘His voice was incredible,’ says teen star’s mentor, recalling why he signed him. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images At one time, both Justin Timberlake and Usher wanted to sign YouTube sensation and future superstar Justin Bieber . Bieber claims that Usher initially dismissed him in a quick encounter, but Usher eventually gave the kid’s music another listen. He then beat out Timberlake to sign him as his artist, and the rest, as they say, is history. Usher admits that Bieber has the skills to pay the bills, which is why he wanted him so badly. “You know this guy?” he joked. “Well, one was his voice. I felt like his voice was incredible. I feel he was very charismatic, and that’s what it takes to be able to handle what this is. It’s the ability to turn it on and understand, but it was a very real ability. It was actually just him.” Bieber, who just released his sophomore album, My World 2.0, has very quickly established himself as one of the biggest acts out there, but his mentor says that this is just the beginning. He’s got longevity. “If you ever met him, you’d understand exactly what I’m saying,” Usher said. “The other side of it is just the fact that I felt like his story is yet to be told. I think we can go get him hit records or we can teach him how to dance or put him in front of some incredible lighting or put him in the right room and allow him to be himself. But also just his musical talent — the fact that he taught himself to play guitar, the fact that he taught himself to play piano to the point where he can write and create his own songs. [I said to him,] ‘You’re a prodigy.’ ” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Usher Related Artists Usher Justin Bieber Justin Timberlake

Miley Cyrus ‘Sold’ On Liam Hemsworth After First Date

Cyrus tells Jay Leno about meeting ‘Last Song’ co-star and real-life boyfriend at Starbucks. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” Photo: NBC Miley Cyrus had no doubt that she and Liam Hemsworth, her “Last Song” co-star and real-life boyfriend, would have chemistry after she met him for the first time. As soon as he arrived at Starbucks for their first “co-star” date, she knew that he was the right guy for her and for the part. “He’s cute. He plays my boyfriend in the movie, which is very convenient,” she joked when she stopped by “The Tonight Show” to chat with Jay Leno on Thursday. “I met him two weeks before filming. We went on a Starbucks date. That’s what you do when you meet your co-star that you have to be kissing for months and months and months, and I was sold.” That encounter made kissing him on the very first day of filming very easy. “[Our first kiss] was on the first day of filming in the movie,” she said. “We have this scene where we frolic in the water. So I frolic very well apparently, and after that I got to keep him.” Cyrus and Hemsworth have only been dating for about ten months , but she says that they’ve already checked out each other’s parents to see how well they will age in the future. “He looked good and he’s got a full head of hair,” she said about her beau’s dad. And as for her mom, Tish, Cyrus joked, “My mom’s hot, so …. No, I’m very aware [she’s hot]. I think that was the only reason why I had any guy friends.” Check out everything we’ve got on href=”http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/423507/moviemain.jhtml”> “The Last Song.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Miley Cyrus Prefers Kurt Cobain Over Justin Bieber

At the premiere of ‘The Last Song,’ Miley dishes about ‘American Idol’ and Bieber fever. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Ryan J. Downey Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth at the “Last Song” premiere Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images This week, not only did Miley Cyrus get to serve as a mentor on “American Idol,” but she also got to hang out with pop music’s newest idol, Justin Bieber, when both appeared on “The View.” But she admitted that her 10-year-old sister, Noah, was a lot more excited to meet the 16-year-old than she was. “Bieber fever … I’m not necessarily a fan. I don’t listen to that kind of music,” she told MTV News at the red carpet for her new flick, “The Last Song,” on Thursday night in Los Angeles. “I like Kurt Cobain. [He] is like my dream boyfriend.” Noah, however, was thrilled to get a very public shout-out from the “Baby” singer. “But my little sister was obsessed with him, and he actually gave her a shout-out on Twitter,” she said. “And I thought that was really sweet. So I was like, ‘Thank you so much. That meant a lot too.’ … He called her a cutie, and I haven’t stopped hearing about it.” Meanwhile, Miley was still thrilled about being chosen to mentor the Idols this week. “It’s cool. I was the youngest mentor, so I was excited that people really cared what I had to say and were inspired by me,” she said. “And it was great.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Song.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘The Hills’ Stars Reveal What They’d Like To See On Final Season

‘I wish for a happier season,’ Lo Bosworth says of last 12 episodes, kicking off April 27. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Cavallari Photo: MTV News Now that it’s been announced that the new season of “The Hills” will be its last , some of the show’s stars are discussing what they’d like to see happen in the final 12 episodes, kicking off April 27. Will Lauren Conrad come back? Will Kristin Cavallari stir up some more relationship trouble? Will Speidi finally start a family? It seems like anything is possible as the cast bids a fond farewell. “I’ve had the best time,” Cavallari told MTV News about her return to reality TV at the season-finale party in December. So what does she foresee happening in the new season? “In two weeks, so much can go on. Already, it’s like night and day to what’s happen[ed]. So I have no idea. In the ‘Hills’ world, so much can happen in one day, so I have no idea.” Castmate Lo Bosworth, who entered the reality-TV world alongside Cavallari on “Laguna Beach,” said she’d like to see a little less drama for the show’s final season, though it feels like that might be an impossible dream. “I wish for a happier season next time,” she said in December. “I would like a little return to normalcy, actually, sort of like previous seasons. It was a little more — not naive, but had more charm to it, just ’cause we didn’t really know what we were doing.” And while last season was Lauren Conrad-free after she left the show to pursue other interests, does her bestie Lo ever think she might make a cameo? “Highly doubtful,” she said. “I think she’s very content.” What do you want to see happen in the show’s last season? Should LC return? Tell us in the comments! “The Hills: Final Season” premieres April 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT followed by “The City” at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Glenn Beck Responds To James Cameron Beef

Fox News host mocks the ‘Avatar’ director for challenging him to global warming debate. By Jocelyn Vena James Cameron and Glenn Beck Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News On Wednesday night, Fox News host Glenn Beck fired back at James Cameron for verbal shots he’d taken at him at an “Avatar” DVD press conference Tuesday. Cameron had taken issue with Beck calling him “the Antichrist” years before and challenged the conservative newsman to a public discussion about several topics, including global warming. In Beck’s response , he mocked Cameron by taking out a pair of cardboard 3-D glasses. “The following segment is a Fox television first — it’s Fox News 3-D,” he said. “Yes, James, I am guilty. I did call James Cameron the Antichrist. But only because of the Celine Dion song. Horrific. Really. But the best part is, this guy has carried this joke around for three long years. “This guy is making a billion dollars on a Smurf-murdering movie and he’s stewing about a joke that nobody heard on a network nobody watched!” Beck said, referring to comments he’d made about the director on a CNN special in 2007. It’s time to walk away from the CGI, Jim. Just for a minute. “I don’t think he’s just upset with me, though,” Beck said, addressing the viewers. “He’s also upset with you too. Because you’re a global warming denier.” On Tuesday, Cameron called Beck “a f—ing a–hole” and a “madman.” He also broadened his criticism to other conservatives who refuse to acknowledge the threat of climate change. “I want to call those deniers out into the street at high noon and shoot it out with those boneheads,” Cameron said. “Anybody that is a global-warming denier at this point in time has got their head so deeply up their a–, I’m not sure they could hear me.” Would you like to see a debate between Beck and Cameron? Justin Bieber Beats Nick Cannon At Bowling During My World 2.0 Party

‘He’s about to take over the world,’ Cannon says of Bieber’s newfound success. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: James Devaney/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Not only can Justin Bieber celebrate the release of his sophomore album My World 2.0, but he also rose to victory against Nick Cannon at his bowling-themed release party at Lucky Strike Lanes in Manhattan. It’s made even sweeter since Cannon seemed pretty sure he was going to beat Bieber at his own game. Only minutes before he stepped inside to compete against Bieber, he spoke to MTV News about his plans to kick his butt at the game. “I’m going to! I’m about to show Justin that he has no skills,” he said. “He can’t bowl. We privately had this conversation and he said that his game is only decent. My game is ill. I’m next-level — I’m like the Tiger Woods of bowling, but without all the drama.” And while Beiber is seen bowling in his music video for his single “Baby,” Cannon had been hitting the lanes to train for his bout against Bieber. “Practicing and everything,” he shared. “Justin’s gonna get it. I got the bowling attire. I’m ready to bowl.” But as it turned out, Cannon was all talk and was taken down by Bieber and lost to him in their big match. Despite losing to him, does Cannon have a case of Bieber fever? “Kind of. I feel it coming on. That kid is definitely busy … he’s got a lot of hot stuff going on. He’s about to take over the world. We’re gonna see him live and in person [tonight].” MTV News will be rolling out previews from “The Diary of Justin Bieber” all week — don’t miss the full show, airing on MTV Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET! Demi Lovato Says Boyfriend Joe Jonas Doesn’t Share Her Love For Heavy Metal

‘I played it for him and he’s like, ‘Whoa that’s crazy,’ ‘ the Disney star said on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live.’ By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato appears on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Photo: ABC Joe Jonas apparently doesn’t have a high tolerance for girlfriend and fellow Disney star Demi Lovato ‘s taste in heavy metal. Lovato, appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night, said she was tired after going to see a Maylene and the Sons of Disaster concert the previous night. When asked if boyfriend Joe shared her fondness for “hard-core Southern rock metal band,” Lovato said, “No, we’ve talked about it. … I played it for him and he’s like, ‘Whoa that’s crazy.’ ” While they might not agree on what kind of music to listen to (Jonas has admitted to being a big fan of indie rock band Vampire Weekend ), not surprisingly, they haven’t even broached the subject of starting a family. “You know, it’s a little early to talk about that,” Lovato told Kimmel. All joking aside, the couple will appear on “American Idol” this week, where they will sing their duet, “Make a Wave,” from the new Disneynature flick “Oceans.” (Jonas appeared on “Idol” earlier this season as a guest judge .) “Yes we’re doing a duet. I’m afraid of Simon, so I’m good [about not being judged by him while on the show]. … The song’s coming out and it’s great,” she explained. “It’s not about being in love. It’s whatever you interpret it to be.” Lovato currently stars on the Disney series “Sonny With a Chance,” but she got her big start in entertainment alongside a certain big purple dinosaur. “I was on the ‘Barney’ show for about two seasons. I don’t [keep in touch]. You realize he’s kind of a dinosaur,” she joked to Kimmel. Related Artists Demi Lovato Joe Jonas

Justin Bieber Goes Acoustic For MTV.com Performance — Check It Out Here!

The star sings, raps and plays guitar during an intimate live performance. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs live for MTV.com Photo: MTV Justin Bieber ‘s new album My World 2.0 is out on Tuesday (March 23), and he sat down for an exclusive acoustic performance for MTV.com where he played several new tracks as well as a few fan favorites. Bieber not only displayed his vocal abilities, but he also rapped and played guitar. During a performance of “One Less Lonely Girl” off his debut album My World, Bieber played acoustic guitar while belting out the track. For his newer songs like “Never Let You Go” and the Motown-inspired track “U Smile,” Bieber chose to go guitar-less and really showcase his voice. Before his performance of “Baby” he told the intimate crowd, “I don’t know if you guys know this song — it’s called ‘Baby’ and it’s dedicated to Nicole in Minnesota,” before singing the song and then rapping the part usually rapped by Ludacris. He also dedicated the slower track “That Should Be Me” to Alexa in Knoxville, Tennessee. About his new album, Bieber has said it’s a fun record and seemed excited by his producers on the tracks, all of which he helped co-write. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun, the album,” he told MTV News . “I co-wrote everything on the album, and I got to work with a lot of cool producers. I got to work with The-Dream, I worked with … a lot of cool people, so it was a lot of fun.” His favorite song on the album is “Up,” and he’s also partial to second single “U Smile.” “I worked with [Dan] August [Rigo]. I got him. He’s a really good writer,” Bieber said of his friend and collaborator. “The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” Are you excited to see Bieber unplugged? How would you react if Justin dedicated a song to you? Sound off in the comments! Miley Cyrus Says She And Liam Hemsworth ‘Make Each Other Look Good’

Miley spoke on ‘Good Morning America’ about working with her ‘Last Song’ co-star and boyfriend. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus on “Good Morning America” on Monday Photo: ABC Miley Cyrus stopped by “Good Morning America” on Monday (March 22) to promote her new movie, “The Last Song,” opening March 31. And the conversation inevitably turned to her off-screen relationship with co-star Liam Hemsworth . “It was really good [working with Liam], because it makes you want to come to work and … look good,” said Cyrus, who was dressed in a sparkly blouse, tights and shorts. “I’m trying to make people see my work as a real actress and more mature. And when you have someone who loves you and wants you to do well, you really want to help each other, and you want to make each other look good. We both were trying to get our point across [that] we can do more than [what people know us as].” While filming the movie, Cyrus found a very unique way of keeping herself entertained, and that included paying off co-star Bobby Coleman, who plays her younger brother. “He is probably one of the most hysterical kids I’ve met in my life,” she said. “This kid will do anything for five bucks. By the end he literally had a receipt for me. It was like $80. I paid him 10 bucks to go ask Liam if he liked me. I sent him back and forth. It was really funny.” Cyrus also praised her onscreen dad, Greg Kinnear, for keeping the tone on the set light and fun. “He is very laid back, but he’s really funny,” she said. “Mostly, he plays deeper darker roles, and he’s so hilarious. … So many times I felt like I was back on the [‘Hannah Montana’] set with my dad.” “The Last Song” is part of Cyrus’ plan to take on more mature roles, but she said that leaving “Hannah Montana” behind hasn’t been as easy she thought it was going to be. “It’s bittersweet. It’s been kind of hard,” she said. “It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t have this to fall back on.’ We’ve been doing this for five years, then we start to think this is our life and to leave this behind is hard. [But we’re] excited to go on to new chapters in our life. It’s given me such a great start.” Are you ready to see Miley Cyrus play a more mature character? Will you miss “Hannah Montana”?
