Justin Bieber Tops Mentor Usher; The Karate Kid Kicks the Competition at the Kids’ Choice Awards

It’s not every day you get slimed by Johnny Depp (or that you beat out your mentor for a major award of the night). Such was the case, however, at the 24th Annual Kids’ Choice…

Kids’ Choice Awards 2011: The Show And Winners List

Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus awarded on slime-filled Nickelodeon night. By Aly Semigran Russell Brand and Rico Rodriguez get slimed onstage during Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images For 23 years, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards has been an event in which celebrities can truly let loose. After all, it’s hard to have an ego when you’re getting covered in green slime or being inducted into the Arm Fart Hall of Fame (we’re looking at you, Josh Duhamel). Nick’s 2011 awards show, which aired lived on the network Saturday from Los Angeles, kept with its tradition of stars finding themselves in some truly outrageous situations. Host Jack Black , who was at the helm for the third time (he last helped hand out those coveted orange kaleidoscope blimps in 2008), kicked things off with an over-the-top musical number. The funnyman, wearing a black leather jumpsuit with flames — the first of many quirky wardrobe changes — was joined by a group of dancers to perform his own rendition of the Black Eyed Peas’ hit “I Gotta Feelin’.” Black then introduced the group, as the “Jack Black Eyed Peas,” and joined them onstage for “The Time (Dirty Bit).” BEP, who later won the award for Best Music Group, then sang their next single, “Just Can’t Get Enough.” The first award of the evening was given out to Johnny Depp, who won Favorite Movie Actor for his performance in “Alice in Wonderland.” Depp, who emerged from backstage, told the kiddie crowd and voters it was “truly a pleasure to receive this award that comes from you guys. I appreciate it.” After apologizing for beating Black in the category, Depp told Nick viewers, “You guys are the future; take good care of us.” The actor then proceeded to get in on the fun, sliming the group of young fans who stood at the foot of the stage. Depp’s stunt led to one of the evening’s most memorable — and by far, funniest — moments when “Arthur” actor Russell Brand and “Modern Family” star Rico Rodriguez appeared onstage soon after to present the award for Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie (the blimp eventually went to Eddie Murphy, who got the crowd to sing him “Happy Birthday,” for his role in “Shrek Forever After”). Before Brand and Rodriguez could even begin their banter at the podium, the freshly slimed youngsters began throwing the green, gooey mess at the two stars. In response to the mayhem, Brand declared, “I’m never having children.” Brand continued, as he guarded Rodriguez from the kiddie coup, “I am English! I am your leader! You must not do this, I am royalty! You are all going to juvenile hall. You children are going to prison. You are bad children!” Brand, who is voicing a character in the animated feature “Hop,” cried that the moment was not in the script, then joked, “Johnny, I wished you’d drowned them.” They weren’t the only stars to get slimed during the broadcast. Heidi Klum, who almost took a spill thanks to her sky-high heels, got hit, as did Jason Segel, who received a slime slushie courtesy of Jane Lynch. Even Snoop Doog — who joined pop-rock group and Nick stars Big Time Rush for their song “Boyfriend” — got doused in the green stuff. As Willow Smith performed her hits “21st Century Girl” and “Whip My Hair,” the 10-year-old was cheered on by her dad, Will Smith, and brother, Jaden Smith, who were in the audience. The final big award of the evening went to Miley Cyrus , who won for Favorite Movie Actress for “The Last Song.” The former “Hannah Montana” star attempted to put gossip to rest during her acceptance speech as she thanked her family for supporting her career. Cyrus will no doubt get fans wondering about the status of her relationship with “Last Song” co-star and on-again, off-again beau Liam Hemsworth , whom she thanked for “helping me make movie magic” in the 2010 drama. The Big Help Award, which was presented by Rosario Dawson, went to singer/actor Justin Timberlake for his devotion to charities, particularly the work he does with Shriners Hospital for Children. In between cracking jokes about burping and getting the crowd to cheer if they had ever helped anyone, Timberlake took the time to tell his young fans, “Your heart is the most beautiful part, so don’t forget to use it.” In addition to telling kids they can do their part to help, even with major issues such as the crisis in Japan, the star said something bound to make any adult watching elated: “Listen to your parents!” Finally, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian hit the stage to help give away the last award of the night for Favorite TV Show, which went to the kid-friendly Nickelodeon hit “iCarly.” Black kept a high energy throughout the show, including some interactions with his “Kung Fu Panda 2” character, Po, — one of which featured a cameo from Britney Spears in a pre-recorded segment. He ended the evening with a slime battle between himself and Jim Carrey, who made a surprise finale appearance. Other winners included: Favorite Female Singer Katy Perry Favorite Male Singer Justin Bieber Favorite Song “Baby” – Justin Bieber Favorite Movie “The Karate Kid” Favorite Animated Movie “Despicable Me” Favorite Reality Show “American Idol” Favorite TV Actress Selena Gomez Favorite TV Actor Dylan Sprouse Favorite Book “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series Favorite Cartoon “Spongebob Square Pants” Favorite Male Athlete Shaquille O’Neal Favorite Female Athlete Lindsey Vonn Favorite Video Game “Just Dance 2” What was your favorite moment at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards? ‘Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules’ Knocks Out ‘Sucker Punch’ At Box Office

While the kids-friendly sequel ruled the weekend, “Just Go With It” became the 12th Adam Sandler movie to gross more than $100 million. By Ryan J. Downey Grayson Russell in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” Photo: FOX In the weekend battle of the flashy, hyper-stylized action flick versus the kid-movie-franchise sequel, it turned out that Rodrick did, in fact, rule. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” bested “Sucker Punch” at the box office to become the #1 movie in the United States with a $22.4 million debut. Based on the second installment of the kid-friendly book series, “Wimpy Kid” bested the debut of its predecessor, which took in $21.8 million when it was released around this same time last year. All figures are according to studio estimates. The $19 million opening of “Sucker Punch,” meanwhile, was less than the debuts of director Zack Snyder’s previous movies “300,” “Watchmen” or “Dawn of the Dead.” While the latter three films were based on preexisting sources, “Sucker Punch,” a loud music-driven action fantasy about a group of girls in a mental institution who lead dream-world lives as action heroines, was Snyder’s first wholly original concept. A mere 22 percent of critics reviewed it positively, according to Rotten Tomatoes. News that the 45-year-old director has cast Amy Adams as Lois Lane in his forthcoming superhero reboot “Superman: Man of Steel” overshadowed talk of “Sucker Punch” across Twitter and film blogs on Sunday. Last week’s #1 movie, “Limitless,” brought in another $15.2 million, for a domestic total of $41.3 million. With an estimated production budget of $27 million, the movie’s numbers are great news for Bradley Cooper, who chose the flick as his first real starring vehicle since finding fame. The modest success of “The Lincoln Lawyer” is great news of a different kind for Matthew McConaughey. It’s his best-reviewed film in years. Telling the story of a conflicted lawyer working cases from his car, the movie has reminded critics that the sometimes-ridiculed leading man does have real talent. “The Lincoln Lawyer” brought in $11 million to land at #4, with a $29 million total. Johnny Depp’s animated “Rango” was one of two movies to cross the $100 million mark over the weekend. The movie landed in fifth place with a $9.8 million take, for a $106.4 million total. Meanwhile, “Just Go With It” became the 12th Adam Sandler movie to gross more than $100 million domestically. Although the romantic comedy is no longer in the top 10 at the box office, it has earned a total of $100.3 million. Sci-fi action flick “Battle: Los Angeles” was #6 with $7.6 million, for a $72.6 million total. The loving sci-fi homage “Paul” dropped roughly 45 percent in its second weekend of release, earning $7.5 million to land at #7 while upping its total earnings to $24.6 million. The Nick Frost/ Simon Pegg comedy cost about $40 million to make. “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood” was #8 with $4.3 million, for a $32.5 million total. Matt Damon’s “The Adjustment Bureau” was #9 with $4.2 million, for a $54.9 million total. International tickets, after-market sales and a built-in diehard fanbase will probably save “Paul” from being remembered as a failure, but the weekend’s #10 movie, which shares an alien theme, likely won’t escape that fate. The animated “Mars Needs Moms” made $2.2 million, bringing its total take to $19.2 million against an estimated $150 million production budget. Next weekend’s new releases include “Moon” director Duncan Jones’ “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga; the Easter-themed kid’s movie “Hop,” featuring the voice of Russell Brand; the haunted-house flick “Insidious”; and the action/comedy “Super,” with Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. New ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

The new preview gives us a few clues about Jack’s journey to the Fountain of Youth. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow Photo: Disney We’ve just crossed the two-month mark; there’s now a mere 59 days until “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” shoves off and into theaters. What’s more, there’s now a brand-new trailer for Johnny Depp’s seafaring 3-D adventure flick, giving us important pieces of plot info and raising all new questions about what we’re going to see when the movie debuts. As we continue to count down the days until that premiere, let’s take a look at the new trailer’s five key moments. Looks Like They Took a Wrong Turn We’ve already seen a variation of this scene — Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow walking under some kind of stone archway on an island — but in the new trailer, we see the camera push forward a little, giving us a peek at what’s on the other side: a ship perched on a cliff high above the water line. How’d it get there? Well, as we see throughout the new footage, the laws of physics get twisted in all sorts of funky ways. Just as compelling a question as what the ship is doing up there is: Whose ship is it? Speaking of ships, the Black Pearl is back in the mix, though this time it seems to be in the hands of nefarious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). And as Captain Barbossa explains, Blackbeard has made some unconventional improvements to the craft. “The rigging had come to life. Our own ship turned against us,” he tells Jack as we see shots of ropes whipping around like tentacles and plucking up pirates. What sort of dark magic does Blackbeard wield? A confusing one, no doubt, because after Sparrow gets caught up in the ship’s new powers, he blurts out, “Captain, I wish to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names!” We’ve seen plenty of mermaids floating through previous “Pirates” footage, but the new trailer gives us the most information yet about how these creatures fit into the storyline. Turns out, a mermaid is needed to locate the fountain of youth — that mythical place everyone in “On Stranger Tides” is trying to find. That explains why, as in earlier footage, we see a shot of a mermaid trapped in a seriously large fish tank. Captivity, however, can kill a mermaid. Given that under his tattoos and dreadlocks, Sparrow is a very moral guy, we suspect Jack might go from capturing a mermaid to setting one free. From the very first official “On Stranger Tides” photos , we’ve seen Jack being dragged into Old Royal Naval College by King George II’s guards and offered the job of finding the fountain of youth. But the captain isn’t one take to orders. How does he slip away from King George’s men? A clue seems to arrive in the form of Jack wearing a musty old wig and a bright red robe, just like a British judge: nothing like a clever disguise to help a pirate escape. As we mentioned, Jack’s quest for the fountain brings him into contact with lands in which the laws of physics don’t entirely apply. Early in the new trailer, for instance, a drop of water seems to fall upwards, hitting Jack’s hands as it goes. Here we see our hero in a sort of cave that has a roof of water. How exactly does something like happen? And, furthermore, how is he pulled up into the water as if by reverse gravity? We likely won’t get the full answer until the movie arrives on May 20. SXSW Buzz Report: Pee Paparazzi Goes Viral, Joe Swanberg Inspires Walkouts

SXSW is a fest that caters to alterna-sensibilities, so it’s no surprise genre fare has done well thus far. Insidious scored high marks with the horror crowd, but The Kill List notched all-out raves from even mainstream press — though the Conan O’B rien documentary Conan O’B rien Can’t Stop contains enough rage and demon-exorcising to give both a run for their money. Meanwhile, Bellflower — a Sundance entry in the Emerging Visions sidebar — screens on Monday night, as does the Dance Dance Revolution thriller The FP . Yes, you read that right: a gang warfare film about Dance Dance Revolution. Don’t you wish you were in Austin?
