Former Jay-Z Associate Tru Life Offered Plea Deal In Murder Case

Rapper and his brother considering deal related to 2009 incident. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Tru Life (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Former Jay-Z associate and rapper Tru Life was offered a plea deal of 10 years in prison by Manhattan prosecutors on Wednesday in connection with a 2009 incident in which a 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed to death. Tru Life, born Robert Rosado, was once signed to Jay-Z’s Roc La Familia imprint. He and his brother Marcus Rosado were slapped with second-degree murder, gang assault and assault charges after the alleged altercation on June 15, 2009, that investigators said initially began with a dispute outside New York nightclub Pacha. The deal would reduce the severity of the original charges and require the rapper and his brother, who was offered a 12-year deal, to waive their right to appeal. According to Tru Life’s attorney, Alan M. Abramson, the rapper has yet to formally agree to the plea deal. In an e-mail message to MTV News, Abramson wrote, “The offer is being reviewed and no decisions have been made at this time.” Court documents reveal the victim, Christopher Guerrero, died as a result of the alleged stabbing. A second man who was allegedly involved in the scuffle was hospitalized for stab wounds. Tru Life, from Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood, is best known in the hip-hop world for his beef with Queens rap duo Mobb Deep over a failed collaboration. The Puerto Rican lyricist was later a cornerstone of Jay-Z’s then-burgeoning Latin-orientated Roc La Familia, along with Texas rapper Aztec. Tru Life never released an album on the label.

By Jayson Rodriguez Juelz Santana Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage Diplomats rapper Juelz Santana missed a few appointments last week, among them an appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live” and a concert in Chicago. Cam’ron said Santana had a “skin issue” that kept him from the Dipset-themed “RapFix Live,” however, it was later revealed Santana was dealing with a legal ordeal: An affiliate of his was arrested at the rapper’s New Jersey studio. In an interview with Chicago’s Power 92 , the MC apologized for his absence and briefly spoke about the incident. “It’s been some legal issue, I know it’s been all over the Internet,” Santana told the Hot Boyz radio hosts. “Police ran up in my studio. I had to deal with that and a couple things. “They always picking on me — that’s the best way I can put it,” he continued. “But by the graces of God, everything should be OK. I wasn’t caught with anything in my possession.” Skull Gang MC Hynief (born Toby M. Raynor) was arrested, with police saying he was in possession of firearms and marijuana. “Two fully loaded 9mm caliber handguns were found in the recording studio along with several boxes of ammunition. Cam’ron Says Vado Will Decline XXL Freshmen Cover

Like Drake and Nicki Minaj in 2010, he says offer came a year too late. By Jayson Rodriguez Cam’ron and Vado Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage It’s almost that time of the year when hip-hop magazine XXL crowns the newest crop of lauded MCs for its annual “Freshmen” cover . J.K. Simmons Reveals ‘Spider-Man 4’ Character Arc

‘J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted,’ actor tells MTV News at Sundance of scrapped film. By Eric Ditzian J.K. Simmons Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — We’ll probably never know the full extent of what Sam Raimi had planned for “Spider-Man 4,” including widespread rumors that John Malkovich would play the villain Vulture . Sony Pictures bailed on the project early last year and is currently rebooting the franchise with Marc Webb in the director’s chair. But pieces of Raimi’s aborted “Spider-Man” puzzle could drip out in the future. In fact, J.K. Simmons, who played Daily Bugle head honcho J. Jonah Jameson, kicked MTV News a puzzle piece when he outlined his character’s planned arc for the flick. “J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted and end up in some little cubicle somewhere and be railing, even more than usual, against the world,” Simmons told us at the Sundance Film Festival . The actor was in town to promote “The Music Never Stops,” a moving drama about a man whose brain tumor renders him unable to differentiate past from present. But our talk inevitably turned to the “Spider-Man” that will never be, and Simmons admitted he was sad to see his version of the franchise die off — not least because it meant he wouldn’t get to cash that hefty check. “I’m still reeling from the rug being pulled out of us,” he said. “I had just bought a house I can’t afford!” Shortly before Sony pulled the plug, Simmons had been eying work on another three “Spider-Man” films and was having creative meetings with Raimi. “There wasn’t a script-script yet, but I had seen Sam a few weeks before that and we talked about story ideas, because on those movies, we always started on the script and we expanded on it,” he explained. “There was a lot of either us coming up with stuff in the room or doing it literally on set — a lot of improv-y stuff with the whole cast in those office scenes.” Simmons added: “He was saying, ‘This is the basic outline, now go bring me funny stuff.’ ” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Mick Jagger And Sting Repping The Roc? Johnny Nunez Made It Happen

Hip-hop photographer recalls persuading rock-star duo and film mogul Harvey Weinstein to flash the Roc diamond, in Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez Johnny Nunez Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Johnny Nunez In the playbook for rap stardom, few things are as essential as being photographed by Johnny Nunez. The New York photog has snapped some of the most iconic images in hip-hop, from Jay-Z and Nas sharing a champagne toast to Mick Jagger, Sting and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein each flashing the Roc diamond in a picture together. For the latter, Nunez exhibited his trademark charm to pull off the feat (anyone in New York City social circles can attest to this), but he endured a hostile environment in the process. Nunez has been reflecting on his career lately, with both a documentary on his life (“Shooting Stars”) previewing on the festival circuit and a New Era cap collaboration (to benefit the Eye Can Foundation for the blind). “A client of mine’s friend said [to him], ‘Why did you bring a photographer?’ ” Nunez told Mixtape Daily about snapping the Jagger, Sting and Weinstein pic that paid homage to Roc-A-Fella Records. “I looked back, and all I saw was all these ice grills [looking at me]. So I thought, ‘Wow, what am I gonna do?’ ” The event was a Vanity Fair party overseas, and Nunez had accompanied Damon Dash — he worked as the hip-hop mogul’s personal photographer — and his entourage. Nunez saw the three powerhouse celebrities together in the distance and put his hustle to work. “I said, ‘Excuse me, could I get a photo?’ And I heard the other photographers: ‘What is he doing?’ ” Nunez recalled. “I could feel the security guards wanting to yank me.” Sting agreed, and Nunez asked the singer if he could put his hands together in the diamond symbol made popular by Jay-Z as recognition of his and Dash’s label, Roc-A-Fella. Sting obliged but asked what the gesture meant. “It’s a universal symbol of love,” Nunez shot back. Weinsten also agreed to toss up the Roc. The Rolling Stones frontman hesitated, but Sting nudged his peer and soon all three cooperated. “I went back to the same guys [who were hating on me], and they said, ‘That’s what I’m talking about,’ ” Nunez recalled. “The moral of that story is, I try to do things at that very moment that either have never been done before or aren’t generic,” he added. “I try to be organic.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Dr. Dre’s Detox Not Due April 20, Rep Says

A rep for rapper/producer says viral video isn’t referring to long-awaited album’s release date. By Jayson Rodriguez Dr. Dre Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage After a video went viral of Dr. Dre seemingly announcing an April 20 release date for his long-awaited Detox, a rep for the rapper/producer told MTV News that the clip wasn’t referring to the album’s arrival. So what was the legendary producer referring to in the clip? That remains unclear at press time. Dr. Dre has been at work on his highly anticipated LP for years now, scraping together several versions of the songs at various times; in one case, he gave several beats slated for his project to 50 Cent for the G-Unit superstar’s debut album. In November, Dre’s first single, “Kush,” hit the Web and was soon followed by a potential follow-up, the Eminem-assisted “I Need a Doctor.” A month later, Dre premiered the video for “Kush” featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. The clip, along with a cover story in the latest issue of hip-hop magazine XXL, seemed to confirm that the rap Chinese Democracy was finally slated for release. The producer’s penchant for perfectionism has long been the reason for the delay of Detox, which will be Dre’s first album since his 2001 LP in 1999. “[I’m] trying to put it out by the end of the fall,” Dre said in an interview this past summer about Detox. “Trying to give everybody what they’ve been waitin’ for and make sure they’re not disappointed; that’s all I’m doing.” What do you think Dre was referring to in the viral video? Share your theories in the comments. Related Artists Dr. Dre
