It can’t be, I don’t even know what race they are. Anyhow, they don’t necessarily all look the same, but they’re all the same sort of crappy stereotypical Disney product. That’s all. We try to come up with a nickname befitting Rihanna’s superstar status, in Bigger Than the Sound. More specifically, she deserves a good nickname, one befitting her status as a true pop&B icon. To wit, she has scored a staggering 10 #1’s on the Billboard Hot 100 — making her the youngest ever to achieve such a feat — including four in 2010 alone. She has released six albums since 2005 (her next is due in November), which have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy awards, is the official ambassador of Barbados (where she ranks somewhere between Doug E. Fresh and rum on the nation’s “greatest exports” scale), has signed lucrative endorsement deals with everyone from Gucci to Vita Coco, makes really great, slightly controversial music videos , takes amazing meet-and-greet photos , commands a huge fanbase she affectionately refers to as her Navy and is a true pioneer of the hair arts. And yet, the best moniker we have been able to come up with for her seems to be “RiRi.” Or maybe “The Bajan Beauty,” which sounds like something Bob Barker would’ve come up with while hosting the 1978 Miss Universe pageant. Clearly, this needs to change. After all, Madonna is the “Queen of Pop.” Lady Gaga is “Mother Monster.” Mariah Carey is “Mimi.” Rihanna has earned the right to be mentioned in the same sentence as all three, yet she often isn’t. And I can think of no other reason beside the fact that she does not have a truly great nickname. Sure, I guess you could call her “The Princess of the Roc,” but really, that was Teairra Mari’s handle first (and everyone seems to be rushing to transfer it over to Willow Smith), and in a lot of ways, it just seems lacking. Rihanna demands something new, something descriptive, something that manages to capture everything that makes her so sensational: her youth, her heritage, her effervescence. Also, on a selfish note, I am desperately looking for new way to refer to her in stories. My job is hard sometimes. Of course, coming up with suitable sobriquets is actually a lot tougher than you’d imagine. An honorary title must not only fit like a glove — could Aretha Franklin really be anything but the Queen of Soul? — but it must be earned. Elvis didn’t become the King, overnight, after all. Yet I can think of no current star in need of a nickname more than Rihanna (is it any wonder that she once sang “What’s my name?”). And since no one else seems to be stepping up, I’ve created a list of potential choices — nicknames befitting of a true star. Of course, if you’ve got one, let me know in the comments below. Like I said, nicknaming is hard work. The 21st Century Girl : Works on two levels: One, it plays up the fact that Rihanna is basically the face of 21st-century pop: a multi-national, genre-bending, tech-crunching (have you seen her Twitter account?) superstar. Two, it is a play on that old T.Rex song, and T.Rex are awesome — just like Rihanna. Who cares if Willow Smith has a song by that name too? Rihanna is the 21st Century Girl. The Admiral : Since she is the commanding officer of the Rihanna Navy. The only downside? David Robinson seemingly locked this one up back in 1986. The Bajan Baroness, or the Baroness : If all the other royalty nicknames are taken (shoot, even Fergie is the Dutchess), well, then let’s dub Rihanna the Baroness. Not only does it sound cool, but there’s a certain badass swagger to it. I’m sure no one remembers the old G.I. Joe character at this point anyway. The Caribbean Queen : You know, because Barbados is located in the Caribbean. And because Rihanna is a queen. Also brings to mind Billy Ocean , which is always a good thing. The Divine Miss R : This one might piss off Bette Midler fans. Also, it seems sort of old-fashioned to refer to Rihanna as “Miss.” Still, I think there’s something to this one. It sort of captures her “respect the bitch” essence. Lil’ Sis, or Sis : Because she really seems like everyone’s kid sister (and because Kid Sister was already taken). Fun, flirty and just a little bit fierce, just like Rihanna. The Only Girl : A nod to one of her biggest hits, also the fact that she really is the only girl in the pop game worth caring about. In a pinch, could be shortened to “The One.” The Pride of Barbados : It’s the national flower of her homeland. Also, people there are proud of her. Its scientific name is caesalpinia pulcherrima, so maybe also “‘Pini”? The Saint Michael Siren : Gives props to the Bajan parish where she was born and also pays tribute to her voice. The singer announced on Twitter that Lil Wayne will appear on a remix of his single “Just in Love,” set to drop on Monday. “BIG NEWS! #JustInLove Remix with Me and @LilTunechi (LIL WAYNE) coming to you on 10/3 on @OnAirWithRyan. Can’t wait for you to hear it!” he wrote . Seacrest jokingly tweeted back, “U have ur leopard jeggings yet?” Back in July, when Jonas was still working on the album, he said he was excited about the chance to get some features and remixes together before the album’s October 11 release date. “The album’s not packaged and sent out yet, so if anybody out there wants to do a song, I’m a free agent,” he told MTV News. Jonas dropped the official version of “Just in Love” earlier this month. The dance track came complete with a sexy video, with Jonas frolicking around Paris with a beautiful French model. While fans will have to wait to hear the song, the magazine reports that Weezy raps lines like: “We makin’ love like animals/ ‘Planet of the Apes.’ ” “He just jumped on the record, and it’s just super awesome to see that somebody like him would wanna support me,” Jonas told Billboard about the soon-to-be-released remix . “It means the world to me, and I love his rap; it’s so dope. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: Getty Images Joe Jonas got sentimental on his first solo single, “See No More,” and now he’s getting sexy on his uptempo second single, “Just in Love.” The song hit the Internet on Friday (September 9) and offers another preview of Joe’s first-ever solo project, Fast Life , which drops October 11. “Just in Love” is a Latin-tinged dance track with a thumping beat behind a synthy sound. In the song, Joe professes his love for a girl who may not be clear about his intentions. On the chorus, he sings, “Just running from the truth/ That I’m scared of losing you/ You are worth too much to lose/ Baby, even if you’re still confused/ Girl I’m just in love with you.” The song was written by Joe Jonas and James Fauntleroy, with production by Rob Knox. In a message for his fans on Ryan Seacrest’s site , he explained why he wrote the track. “I am very excited to premiere my new single ‘Just in Love’ for you guys. This is a song I wrote when I was going through a relationship with somebody,” he explained. “She [was] arguing with me, and all I could do was say, ‘Listen, I love you, but we don’t need to go through this.’ So, this is called ‘Just in Love.’ ” In addition to relaunching his website for this next phase of his career, the video for “Just in Love” will premiere on Monday, but Joe’s already giving fans a taste of what they can expect in the sexy clip, which was directed by Jaci Judelson. In a first tease of the video , Jonas is hanging out in bed with his lady love as the pair trade pillow talk about him having to leave her in Paris, where he shot a video with a French model named Angele. He followed that tease up with a clip of the two in a car, snuggling and playing a sort of English-to-French word association game. In the newest tease , the pair is seen running down a busy street in Paris. The video is certainly a more mature one for the singer, and he’s said that that was his intention. “I think fans are going to be shocked and excited to see the video,” Jonas declared recently. Album , debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to figures provided by SoundScan, the disc moved just under 98,000 copies, enough to grab the top spot but well below the first-week figures for his 2008 album LAX, which opened with 239,000 in sales. Either way, it’s just enough to beat out Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne , which drops to #2 in its third week, as sales dove 47 percent to 94,000 for a three-week total just north of 707,000. Among the new entries in the top 10 is a Barbra Streisand collection, What Matters Most — Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (#4, 66,000), the debut from country supergroup Pistol Annies , Hell on Heels (#6, 42,000), which consists of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, and Muppets: The Green Album (#8, 30,000), with modern interpretations of the lovable puppets’ songs by OK Go, Weezer, My Morning Jacket, Amy Lee of Evanescence and the Fray. The JoBro says he’s been working for over a year on a stage act to match his dance-heavy solo album. By Christina Garibaldi Joe Jonas Joe Jonas is gearing up for a very busy fall: He’s heading out on the road with Jay Sean for a 19-city tour ; his first solo album, Fast Life, hits stores October 11, and then he’ll jet off with Britney Spears for the European leg of her Femme Fatale Tour . Though his single, “See No More,” has been out for months, and he’s been performing all over the place lately, there’s still a chance this Jonas brother’s new sound might surprise his longtime fans. “The biggest difference is a little bit more urban and dance electronic stuff,” Jonas told MTV News at the mtvU VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV . “I’ve been influenced by a lot of different artists throughout my life and this is my opportunity to kind of show the world a little bit more about what I like writing and what I like coming up with musically.” If he’s delivering that kind of sound, fans will probably expect him to show off his dance moves onstage, and Jonas says he’s been working to perfect them for quite some time. “It was a little bit difficult in the beginning to feel comfortable with it,” Jonas said of learning his dance steps. ” I’ve been rehearsing for a little over a year with Marty, who’s a choreographer I work with, and he’s made me feel a lot more comfortable onstage, a lot more comfortable in my own skin, which made the whole process 100 percent better.” Just last week, Jonas unveiled Fast Life ‘s album cover, which he said is the perfect representation of the upcoming release. “We had a couple of photo shoots trying to decide which direction we wanted to go in,” Jonas said of the album cover. “And just kind of came together with having a really cool background and explaining Fast Life. ” So what do those words mean for Jonas? “I think my life has been so crazy busy for the past year and a half, and I kind of wanted to show people a little bit more of what my life is about, bring them into it a little bit more, so that’s been a fun experience.” Jonas said. [It] should be exciting to see him play again.” While fans went crazy for his 2007 performance, Brown is set to up the ante this year. Co-headlining jaunt will hit 19 U.S. cities before Jonas rejoins Britney Spears tour in Europe. He’s set to hit the road next month with Jay Sean for a co-headlining tour, EW.com reports. The 19-city tour will kick off September 6 in Boston before wrapping up on October 6 in New York. The duo will hit up a number of major cities as they make their way across the U.S., with stops planned in Los Angeles and Chicago. After he wraps up his tour with Jay, Jonas is set to hit the road with Britney Spears for the European leg of her Femme Fatale tour. Both guys have albums in the works. Joe drops Fast Life on October 11 and Jay will release Freeze Time in the near future. MTV News caught up with Jonas backstage during his recent gig with Spears in New Jersey at the Izod Center, and he teased what fans should expect to see on the European Femme Fatale tour. “I feel like it’s the right timing now and being able to go on the Europe tour now is going to be even more incredible. I’m looking forward to it,” he said, chalking up his album’s slightly delayed release to fateful timing. “I think it just winds up perfectly for this tour, more than anything,” he said. “What better way to get [the album] out there than the Britney Spears tour? And also just mixing and tweaking; I want to make the album perfect. I wanted to make it perfect for the fans who have waited for the album.” As for those Spears shows, he says he’s going big. “You’ve got to make it bigger ’cause the stage is bigger, that plus figuring out how the European tour’s going to be,” he said. “We’re probably going to add a couple songs here and there and try to mix it up and do something different.
