New cast tells MTV News which ‘Degrassi’ alums they look up to most. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Degrassi” “Degrassi” has become quite the starting-off point for some of the biggest stars on the planet. It launched this little-known rapper who goes by Drake and two of the CW’s biggest stars, “Vampire Diaries” actress Nina Dobrev and “90210” star Shenae Grimes. So, when several of the classic franchise’s new class stopped by MTV News, we wondered just which alum’s career path they’d love to follow. “I’d love to do this, all the time. I just love to do acting,” Munro Chambers told us just as the new season of the show was hitting TeenNick, before joking, “I’d love to be Nina. I’d love to do more stuff in this industry and keep doing it.” He added that while he hasn’t met all those famous alums, when he has crossed paths with someone from the show’s past, they’ve always had pleasant memories of their “Degrassi” days. “I’ve never met Drake, or Aubrey [Graham] as we know him. I’ve never met Shenae,” he said. “And, I’ve met Nina once or twice and she’s a sweetheart.” Chambers’ co-star Annie Clark would also love to take a play from the Dobrev handbook. ” Nina and Shenae have what I would like [to follow] for the future,” she shared. “[Nina] always remembers everyone too. The set is very homey and friendly, so it’s kind of like going back to your actual high school.” “I’d love to like try and stay in school,” Alex Steele shared. “But I’d also really love to do shows, like Nina Dobrev, [who] has her own show basically.” While Nina seems to be the gold standard in terms of post-“Degrassi” careers, Jordan Todosey suggested she wouldn’t mind going the Drake route. “I love acting, so I’d love to stay in acting,” she said. “But music is such a passion of mine and I write songs and sing, so I think it’d be so much fun to break into the music industry too.”
No! Not together ! Could you imagine? Actually, I guess you’re perfectly welcome to play these unearthed early ’90s pop gems by artist/filmmaker Julian Schnabel and actor Ian McShane simultaneously in a fit of masochistic Tuesday morning ardor, but nine out of 10 doctors would strongly disapprove. And the tenth one would be clinically deaf. Let’s have a listen! Jordan Hoffman passed along word this morning of his extraordinary archival find: Schnabel’s troubled 1993 album Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud , produced by Bill Laswell and featuring a fairly staggering line-up of Anton Fier on Drums, Laswell on bass, Bernie Worrell on keys and Buckethead on guitar. And behind the mic: Schnoul Brother No. 1, Mr. Julian Schnaaaaabellll [CROWD GOES WILD]: I know what you’re asking yourself: How did this happen? How could this happen? Is that a turd or phallus on the album cover? But there’s no time for questions — not with Ian McShane’s 1992 covers album From Both Sides Now to revisit . No real back-up band on this one besides the British producers The James Boys, a pair of wunderkinds who laid down just the right karaoke-style synth jams to complement England’s own hardest-working man in show business: Check out the complete story behind McShane’s misbegotten croonery here , and lobby Hoffman to release the rest of those hallowed Schna-ballads here . While some marketing efforts demand a close read , others allow no margin for misundertanding what they are, where they come from, or what they portend. Take writer-director Jordan Roberts’s comedy Frankie Go Boom , which premieres this weekend at South By Southwest with arguably the best tagline of any festival film in history and the promise of Ron Perlman in full transgender mode. Get your first look at the poster — and a tagline translation — after the jump. Perfect! Now in English: Frank Bartlett has been tortured, embarrassed and humiliated by his brother Bruce — usually on film — his entire life. Now that Bruce is finally off drugs and has turned his life around, things should be different. They are not. And why might that be? Another bit from the synopsis made available to Movieline: While trying to remove a compromising video from the internet, two brothers (Charlie Hunnam and Chris O’Dowd) visit a brilliant computer hacker named Phil (Ron Perlman). But when they get there, they discover that Phil is now Phyllis… …and she has no intention of helping them for “free.” The rest will remain a mystery until Frankie Go Boom unspools for the first time Saturday night in Austin, where Movieline’s own Jen Yamato will be on hand for a look. Stand by for that and plenty more from SXSW. And please form an orderly queue until these one-sheets are available for the home, the office, and beyond. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Nope, none. Not D-Wade, not Bron Bron. Nobody: Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has always been lauded for his self-motivation and drive to be the best. It’s a good thing he has that internal ambition, because according to Bryant, he’s gone through his 16-year career without a true rival on the exterior to push him to succeed. “I didn’t have one,” Bryant said after scoring 38 points in the Lakers’ 115-107 win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday. Despite Bryant’s acknowledging that it’s not just another game, he wouldn’t characterize his relationship with LeBron James as a rivalry. “Not for me,” Bryant said. “I get up for everybody just the same, to be honest. It’s hard for me to turn my meter up any higher than it normally is.” OK, Bryant was asked, how about Dwyane Wade? After all, Wade plays shooting guard just as Bryant does, Wade has one Finals MVP trophy to Bryant’s two, and Wade has to be close to as competitive as Bryant or else he wouldn’t have given Bryant that hard foul across the face in the All-Star Game. “He’s too young,” Bryant said. “He’s too young. When I came into the league, he was in elementary school.” Bryant is three years older than Wade, but was already a seven-year veteran when Wade was drafted in 2003. Bryant said it is “a little late in the game” for him to develop a rivalry with any current NBA player, so instead he is chasing names in the record books rather than in box scores from the 2011-12 season. “At this point my rivals, in terms of what I have left to accomplish in my career, (left the game) when Magic (Johnson) and Michael (Jordan) retired in ’98,” Bryant said, referring to the second of Jordan’s three retirements that came after he won his sixth and final championship with the Chicago Bulls. “That’s it. In terms of what I’m looking to accomplish, that’s about it.” The San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan won four championships to Bryant’s five throughout their shared careers, but Bryant said while the Spurs might have qualified as a team rival to his Lakers, Duncan’s individual rivalry came against Shaquille O’Neal as a fellow big man. “He was never in my position,” Bryant said. “He was more Shaq’s rival than mine. As a team, the Spurs were always a team that we had to go through. So from that standpoint, yes, but in terms of personally, no. I’ve outgrown them all, from A.I. (Allen Iverson) when I first came in to (Tracy) McGrady to Vince Carter and so forth and so on.” Bryant said that he developed the desire to win multiple championships from an early age. “It’s always what I want to accomplish,” Bryant said. “That’s what you set your goals at. Growing up, watching them, they’ve always won multiple championships and that was always something that I felt like must be done. So, my goal originally when I was a kid and so forth, and when I was a teenager, always started from gauging them.” Although he makes a valid point, someone is certainly feelin himself wayyyyy to much. MTV News goes shopping in New York City to find the prince of pop the best gift, from a $20,000 watch to a Bentley. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Justin Bieber’s 18th birthday is here and everyone, from his mentor Usher to his biggest fans , is super excited! But what do you get the guy who already has everything? MTV News’ Christina Garibaldi hit the streets of NYC to find out, visiting some of the Big Apple’s most exclusive big-name retailers to find the pop prince the perfect birthday gift. Anyone who’s seen MTV’s classic “Cribs” knows that the rich and famous love cars, and “the more the merrier” seems to be the motto when it comes to filling your garage with sweet rides. Biebs already has a Ferrari and a Cadillac Batmobile, so what more does he need? Paul at Manhattan Motorcars thinks he’s got just the ticket: the redesigned 2012 Bentley Continental GTC. “Very sporty car, definitely aimed at a younger buyer,” Paul told MTV News. “Completely hand-built, handcrafted in England. Just a blast to drive.” With a new ride lined up, Bieber’s going to need a new pair of shades to keep the sun out of his precious peepers while he’s cruising around Hollywood. For those, MTV visited Jordan Silver at Silver Lining Opticians. “Some of the most amazing pieces I think Justin might like are Persol, Ray-Ban and some of the brands that did car collaborations in the ’80s,” Silver said. “One we just got in is by Maserati. It’s a shield with three sets of lenses, interchangeable, and two sets of temples so that when you’re traveling at high speeds you might need the extra protection of the cable temple.” The cost? A cool $1,200. But that’s pocket change to Bieber’s pals like Lil Wayne , who hit the recording studio with the “Baby” singer last month. If Bieber’s girl Selena Gomez is feeling sentimental about the dog they recently adopted, she could hit up Trax NYC for an $18,000 23-carat bulldog pendant. “Got some pink diamonds in the eyes. Yellow diamonds, black diamonds, all hand-set,” Trax’s Paul Mazza told MTV News. For an even pricier gift, Christina checked out some of Trax’s blinged-out watches. “If you look at it right here, there’s a lot of diamonds,” Mazza said, showing off a $20,000 watch featuring 35 carats in diamonds. “This is something that definitely garners a lot of attention. … Got one for every day of the week, different colors. It doesn’t get any better than this.” What would you get Justin Bieber for his 18th birthday? Leave your comment below! Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber !
