‘Green Lantern’: Everything We Know Before The Trailer Debut

Take a look back before the latest sneak peek premieres. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Reynolds Photo: Getty Images After years of what’s-taking-so-long buildup, a killer Comic-Con rollout and a pre-trailer teaser that popped up earlier this week, the first “Green Lantern” trailer is set to debut online in a few hours. That sound you hear is the MTV Movies team giggling with delight. Because it’s been a long time coming, and there’s still almost seven months to go until the DC Comics adaptation hits theaters. As we look forward to the new trailer, we’ve also been looking back at everything we already know about “Green Lantern.” Early Development The flick has journeyed through a by-now-familiar cycle of development delays and contrasting studio visions. An earlier version, for instance, established a more comedic take on the character — Hal Jordan, a fighter pilot-turned-superhero, thanks to an all-powerful ring — with Jack Black in the starring role . By the summer of 2008, though, Warner Bros. had shifted the property back to active development, and a trio of fanboy-approved writers (Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green) penned a new script. “We really spanned the whole gamut from the Silver Age through the Modern Age to Geoff Johns,” Guggenheim told us about “Lantern” comics that inspired them. “There’s a lot of different elements that are hard to coalesce, actually. Green Lantern as much as any modern-day superhero has a lot of continuity gaps and inconsistencies, and you’re wrestling with it all to make everything work.” In February 2009, word broke that “Casino Royale” director Martin Campbell was in negotiations to direct , and by that summer, three actors were reportedly competing for the Jordan role: Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Reynolds . In July, the part was handed to Reynolds . “I fell in love with the character when I met with Martin Campbell,” Reynolds told us that November. “When you have a guy like Martin Campbell, part of his charm is that he has balls of titanium, and the other part is that he’s slightly crazy, and you have to be to take on something with the scope of ‘Green Lantern.’ He’s less of the director and more of a general.” The Shoot Just days into 2010, “Green Lantern” got an official green light and a production start date of March . Quickly, the rest of the cast came together: Blake Lively as Jordan love interest Carol Ferris; Mark Strong as initial Jordan mentor Sinestro; Peter Sarsgaard as villain Dr. Hector Hammond; and Tim Robbins as Senator Hammond. In a move that surprised no one, Campbell announced that the film would be converted to 3-D during post-production . Ramping up the visual-effects quotient further, it became clear that Reynolds’ suit would be a completely CG-assisted outfit, and that’s exactly what we got when images of a suited-up Reynolds debuted online . San Diego Comic-Con Warner Bros. swept into the den of pop-culture geekery this summer with one heck of a presentation: purple-hued Abin Sur encased in glass; footage of Reynolds as Jordan and Sarsgaard as Hammond; and tons of commentary from the cast and crew. “The tone is light. It has a lot of humor, but I think the relationships between all the characters are very real,” Campbell said during the Comic-Con panel . “We try to keep the action very real. … It’s my first superhero movie — unless you count James Bond.” The Run-Up to the Trailer The key question remained: When would folks not lucky enough to be in Hall H during Comic-Con get to check out “Green Lantern” footage? DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns announced that the trailer would debut in front of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” on Friday. But what about online? “I wish I could say tomorrow, but it’s not going to be tomorrow. It will be soon, though.” Johns said in October. “Technically it’s a teaser, but it’s pretty big. I don’t know the exact time, length, but it’s got more stuff in there than I would have thought for a teaser, that’s for sure.” MTV News then learned the trailer would appear online Tuesday (November 16) at 8 p.m. ET. A few days earlier, “Entertainment Tonight” aired a teaser for the trailer . We saw Reynolds transform into superhero form and unleash a giant, power-ring-enabled fist; images of the Green Lantern home planet; and Kilowog, one nasty-looking drill instructor who helps train Jordan. So what will we see in the full trailer? Whatever it is, except some heated debate. That’s what happened when the first look at Jordan’s costume debuted and, well, Reynolds expects nothing less . “There has to be a little healthy debate about it,” he told us. “I mean, that’s important. If it were just slanted one way or the other, I don’t think it would be that satisfying.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Green Lantern.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . New Orleans: Systemic Police Brutality Exposed

Bio Jordan Flaherty is a New Orleans-based journalist and works with the Louisiana Justice Institute. He was the first writer to bring the story of the Jena Six to a national audience, and his award-winning reporting from the Gulf Coast has been featured in a range of outlets including the New York Times, Mother Jones, and Argentina's Clarin newspaper. Jordan just published released his new book called “FLOODLINES: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena Six”. t's hard to believe all this took place in america, not mexico or venezuela… Transcript PAUL JAY, SENIOR EDITOR, TRNN: Welcome to The Real News Network. I'm Paul Jay. And now joining us again from our studio in Washington is Jordan Flaherty. He's the author of the book Floodlines: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena Six. Thanks for joining us again, Jordan. JORDAN FLAHERTY, AUTHOR AND JOURNALIST: Thank you, Paul. It's a pleasure. JAY: So one of the things that people have talked about after Katrina is the role of the police and the Armed Forces particularly. But a lot has come to light about the role of the New Orleans police and abuses of power. Tell us a bit about what people are looking at. But also, was this an anomaly, where, you know, police went nuts in the course of a storm? Or was this kind of normal New Orleans police behavior that is just getting looked at because of the storm? FLAHERTY: The first thing to understand, Paul, is in those first days after the storm, suddenly the media coverage shifted from sympathy to the people trapped on rooftops, the victims of this disaster, to portraying people as criminals, as looters, as armed gangs roving the streets, shooting at police helicopters, raping infants. We later found out those stories were false. But they were propagated by the chief of police, who said that infants were being raped in this Superdome; by the mayor, who said that there was lawlessness on the street, that he declared martial law, even though no such thing exists under Louisiana law. The governor of the state of Louisiana—Kathleen Blanco at the time—said, I'm sending in the National Guard troops; they're locked and loaded, they've been trained to shoot to kill, and I expect they will. JAY: Now, hang on for a sec. You're saying there were no incidents? Or some incidents were exaggerated to look like it was a bigger phenomenon than it was? FLAHERTY: I'm saying those incidents that were specifically talked about that were incredibly outrageous, like infants being raped in mass numbers in the Superdome—there was no raping of infants that anyone's documented that happened in the Superdome. Shooting at rescue helicopters—again, no one's documented where that happened, although that was widely talked about at the time. Another incident that was talked about, the second-in-charge of the police department said he heard officers radioing in saying they needed more ammo, they were running out of ammo, like they were in a wartime situation. Again, this call never actually happened. So these major incidents that were talked about never happened. There were certainly people, both police officers and regular civilians, that were taking goods out of stores, mostly food and water to feed people in their community. But the massive, violent outbreak that was talked about in the news that was used to demonize people, that actually didn't happen. JAY: So why do people think the police were doing this? I mean, what's in it for them to exaggerate the issue? FLAHERTY: I think it was a time of chaos. It's hard to imagine, if you weren't in the city, what it was like there, but we never imagined this entire city would be underwater. Everything was unimaginable. Everything seemed like we were in a fantasy world. And so many of the things that actually did happen seemed like they couldn't possibly have happened. For example, one thing that really did happen is people were trying to cross out of the city over the Crescent City Bridge, and they were met by armed police from the suburb of Gretna that didn't want people of New Orleans in their city, and they shot at the people from New Orleans and forced them to turn back. This seemed like fiction when we first heard about it. Many of the police killings that happened in that period after Katrina seemed like fiction. It was hard to believe any of this. It was a time of almost mass hysteria. added by: treewolf39

Keanu Reeves Is ‘Trying’ To Make ‘Bill And Ted’ Sequel

‘To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again,’ Reeves says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Keanu Reeves Photo: MTV News It was on the glittering red carpet at the Oscars in March that Keanu Reeves tossed us a most excellent bit of semi-news about a potential new “Bill and Ted” sequel . “I’m trying, I’m trying,” he said. Was he serious? Just joking in the midst of the overly serious awards season circus? We honestly weren’t sure. So when we got a chance to chat with Reeves again — this time at the Toronto Film Festival, where he was promoting “Henry’s Crime” — we had to probe further. Is a third “Bill and Ted” flick really in the works? Might Reeves reunite with co-star Alex Winter and writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon? Perhaps. And Reeves is positively giddy about the possibility that it actually could happen. “We’re trying. Alex and I are still friends and we’re talking, and we’re talking to Chris and Ed,” Reeves said. “They’re going to try and see if they can write something. To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again.” “We’ll see what they do. If it’s a film that can stand up on its own … and I’m meeting people now, they’ve shown the film to their kids,” he added. “We just seek to entertain, and if that could be something that could be worthwhile, on its own …” Whether or not Matheson and Solomon hit on an idea that is worthwhile, of course, is only the first of many questions surrounding the chance that another “Bill and Ted” becomes a reality. But it’s worth noting, as well, how darn enthusiastic Reeves is about the project. During our chat, he popped off joke after joke about “Bill and Ted,” mixing his humor with genuine hope (“That would be amazing!” he declared at one point). He veered from one wacky pitch to the next — everything from a 3-D black-and-white sequel to a multi-director feature involving Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog. Will a third “Bill and Ted” happen? Who knows? But it sure is fun to hear Reeves launch into an impression of Herzog describing the project. “I was just pushed by the idea of this innocence being confronted by the nihilism of the world,” he joked. “And I thought that these two clowns could push our perspective of reality and truth to the forefront of meaning and knowledge.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Nas Gets ‘Nasty’ On ‘Last Real, Part 2’

‘I was feeling the vibe of the streets and sewers,’ Queens MC tells MTV News of Internet burner that leaked as ‘Power, Paper & Pu—‘ By Thomas A. Harden Nas Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Don’t call it a comeback. The Internet was set abuzz over the weekend, when a new Nas track, “Power, Paper & Pu—,” was leaked from DJ Green Lantern’s latest mixtape, Invasion Radio 2K10. The stellar freestyle features the Queensbridge MC in rare form. In recent years, fans and critics alike have mulled the direction of the rapper’s artistic output. Some even argued that Nasty Nas had gone on hiatus. But to hear God’s Son tell it, he’s still the same MC who gave the game Illmatic. “[Nasty Nas] never left,” Nas confirmed to MTV News via email. “I recorded the song in my hometown of New York City. I was feeling the vibe of the streets and sewers, [which] helped me get in that zone.” On Monday night, Funkmaster Flex aired the track on New York’s Hot 97 and then posted the CDQ version on his site under the Internet-approved title “Last Real, Part 2.” Rap Radar, one of the first sites to circulate the original track, later posted the newest version. “Wait, is it ’94 again? Ha!” Rap Radar’s Brian Miller joked when we asked about his reaction to the new material. “Nas sounds confident and arrogant. The lyrics are almost nostalgic.” The cut reunites Nas with longtime collaborator Salaam Remi and samples Herb Alpert’s 1979 jazz hit “Rise.” In his verse, Esco channels his ’90s-era delivery and spits the kind of gritty bars that first made him. “Cars with police radars/ On highways bopping/ Bullpen therapy/ Cellblock dodging/ Pissy stairways/ Miss them days, not when/ They shut down stores when I’m shopping,” Nas raps over the trumpet-laden track. “Used to be pop-locking, train-hopping/ Face covered in stocking/ Six-pack Bud-drinking gambler/ F— them cameras/ In front of the man, sing the hustla’s mantra/ Hands are luck/ More hits than Gamble and Huff.” He later wraps up: “I’m at the Waldorf/ Van Cleef under the sleeve/ Save the small talk/ I feel alive/ New Porsches/ Jordan’s No. 5/ I already said, ‘I’m the last real n—a alive.’ ” Nas explained that he had been a fan of Alpert’s record — the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 smash “Hypnotize” also samples it — and asked Salaam to take it and concoct something special. “Salaam and I are always working together,” Nas said. “I loved the song and asked Salaam to cook it up.” The pair linked up to record the track at New York’s Manhattan Center. “It was just an idea he had,” Remi told us. “But that’s a process we always go through. Really, it’s all about the vibe of what we’re trying to go for. Nas will throw ideas at me and I’ll bounce them right back. We try not to overthink it and let the music speak for itself.” The classic sample is a step in the right direction for Nas, as the MC has at times come under criticism for the beats he chooses. “For years, fans have said Nas’ Achilles heel has been his beat selection. But I’m optimistic,” Miller said. “Nas has always sounded good over Remi’s production, remember ‘Made You Look’?” “Realistically, it’s nothing that’s ever foreign,” Remi added of their creative process. “We always work together. We work when nobody is thinking that we are. It’s not even working — we just do what we do. It’s always going.” Despite his recent marital and legal troubles , “Power, Paper & Pu—” projects a reinvigorated Nas ready to reclaim his position among today’s best. “We’re slowly seeing the return of the Nas we all know and love,” Miller declared. “He was on Tim Westwood’s [radio] show a few weeks back and said that he was going to return to that style of rap. He gave us a small sample on the last verse of ‘Strong Will Continue’ with Damian Marley. His last solo LPs really didn’t hold up, so he can only get better from here. He has a lot to talk about, from being divorced to his child support case. I think the best is yet to come.” In fact, Salaam revealed that fans should be on the lookout for more Nas songs in the near future. “It can be firing at any moment,” Remi said. “It’s just about when it’s time to let it loose, and he’s about to unleash another flurry of music through the multiple projects he has coming out.” What do you think of Nas reviving his Golden Era flow? Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell To Cameo In ‘Scream 4’

Wes Craven flick currently filming in Michigan. By Eric Ditzian Anna Paquin Photo: Jordan Strauss/ WireImage Last month, “Scream 4” director Wes Craven put a call out on Twitter for fans to suggest actors for cameo roles in the upcoming film. The franchise has a long history of placing famous faces in front of the camera — from Drew Barrymore to Kevin Smith — and although more than a decade has passed since “Scream 3,” Craven made clear he intended to keep up the franchise’s cameo tradition. “No janitor, doctor or tourist,” he wrote. While we don’t know if the director took any advice from the Twitter-verse, we do know the names of two actors that will pop up in the new movie: Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell. USA Today reports that the “True Blood” star and the “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star have officially signed on to the cast of “Scream 4,” which is currently filming in Michigan. The two women join returning stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, as well as newcomers Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin. The film is set for release on April 15, 2011. “I think it’s just perfect timing, the amount of time that has passed since the last one came out,” Panettiere told MTV News . “For an audience that is so well-versed in ‘Scream’ [films] and in what happens and who becomes the killer, blah, blah, blah, it’s trickier to throw them a curveball,” she said. “I think they’ve done a really cool job with the script. We’ve had a blast on it.” Check out everything we’ve got on For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Shawty Lo Calls Off Engagement, Drops New Mixtape

‘I want a whole new look on everything I got going,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Shawty Lo Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Bowen Homes Carlos Headliner : Shawty Lo Key Cameos : “The Kitchen” (featuring Yo Gotti), “WTF” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Say Yeah” (featuring Snoop Dogg) Essential Info : Shawty Lo is cleaning house. He phoned in Tuesday to discuss the changes he’s made in his life. First is his label: It will no longer be called D4L Records. “That’s my brand, that’s where I started from,” he said of D4L. “But I’m officially switching my label to 2610: BHF. ‘BHF’ meaning Bowens Home family. 2610 is [the address] where we started from, D4L.” Lo said the name D4L had a stigma to it that some didn’t take as seriously as he wanted. “I just want a fresh look,” he said. “I feel like I got a whole new movement. And I feel the D4L got a curse on it. People think it’s the dancing, the snap [music]. I just wanna get a whole new look. I had a 10-year relationship and everything. I want a whole new look on everything I got going.” That decade-long relationship to his love Ecreia Perez was highlighted by an engagement earlier this summer . But one month after he popped the question, Lo said he broke things off. “Things happen. I can’t point no fingers,” Lo said. “We were separated, the engagement lasted probably a month. It was a 10-year relationship, I love her still, but it’s time to move on. It’s over. I’m finnin’ to move on. I got everything new going for me.” Shawty won’t say exactly what led to their breakup, other than alluding to the fact that Perez disappointed him. “Something happened that I found out,” he said. “Me, being a man, you just can’t deal with certain stuff, put up with certain stuff. So, you know, it’s better for us to separate. I can’t talk about it. That my daughter’s mother. I got much respect for her. … [But] yeah, I’m single right now.” On Tuesday, Shawty put out his Gangsta Grillz mixtape, Bowen Homes Carlos. “It’s crazy, man,” he said. “It’s probably my biggest mixtape. I worked so hard on it. My projects, Bowen Homes, was tore down. ” ‘Tunnel Vision’ is crazy,” he added about the tape. “That’s one song I leaked by mistake, and it caught. ‘Tunnel Vision’ means I’m focused now. This is all I see, and I’m going forward. I just released another video on ‘Tunnel Vision.’ There was one that was released by Jordan Towers, it wasn’t official, but I appreciate him for doing that. ‘Dey Say Where You Been,’ that’s with me and Stuntman. It’s been out for a minute, but I had to put it out on my mixtape, because everywhere I go, they ask about Stuntman. ‘Amazing,’ that’s gonna be the crossover record. I kinda did the Auto-Tune thing, the T-Pain thing on there. If you listen to the first verse, I’m kinda talking about what happened in my relationship. But I’m amazing. Shawty L.O. is amazing. Bowen Homes Carlos is here, believe that.” Outside of his music, Shawty is releasing a cologne in about a month called Lo Seduction: “It’s a very nice smell for the men. It’s been something I’ve been working on for a little over a year now. It took 13 different smells to get it where I wanted it to be. It can go unisex.” Other Heat This Week
