‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The End (Again) For Michael Lynche

Casey James and Aaron Kelly will likely join him in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: FOX He might have gotten the judges’ save a few weeks ago, but time appears to have run out for brawny personal trainer Michael Lynche — at least according to MTV’s “American Idol” experts. “I think it’s finally Big Mike Lynche’s time to go,” said MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . “He sang a very competent version of [Shania Twain’s] ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing,’ but unfortunately, Aaron Kelly and Casey James, two other contestants on the cusp, stepped it up this week.” Lynche got mostly positive notes from the judges — except Simon Cowell, who cryptically called the performance “wet” and “girly” — and he brought mentor Twain to tears, but even his Luther Vandross-like take on the songs might not have been enough to push him past other audience favorites. “Aaron had all the grandmas and mommies heading for the tissues first and then their phones to vote after he transformed Twain’s romantic ballad, ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me,’ into an ode to his adoptive mother,” Santilli said. “And Casey James went back to the thing that works for him — wrapping his country growl around a tender ballad.” Santilli thinks Kelly and James will join Lynche in the bottom three, but it will be Big Mike who gets sent home. MTV News’ “Idol” obsessive, Jim Cantiello, had to agree. “All the good will from the judges’ save has dissipated, and we’re left with a performance that viewers may feel like they’ve seen before,” he said. “There was a lot of hoopla from most of the judges about how well Michael connected to the song, but by the end of the episode, Casey and even Aaron managed to perform their songs in a more believable way.” Yes, Twain was driven to tears by Lynche, but Cantiello isn’t sure voters were moved in the same way. “Remember: The guy first went home after a similarly praised and similarly theatrical ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ” he recalled. ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Sends ‘Bachelor’ Jake Pavelka Packing

Wednesday’s elimination was another teary one as show reaches halfway point. By Kelley L. Carter Chelsie Hightower and Jake Pavelka on “Dancing with the Stars” (file) Photo: ABC Bye-bye, Bachelor. After landing in the bottom two on Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars,” “Bachelor” star Jake Pavelka was sent home on Wednesday. Like last week, when Kate Gosselin was sent packing, Pavelka also was teary, telling the audience that this was “the best season of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ I’ve ever seen. I was so honored to be a part of this. I’ve enjoyed every second of this.” He also thanked his partner, Chelsie Hightower, saying she’s one of his best friends and then pausing to break down in tears. Joining Pavelka in the bottom two was comedienne Niecy Nash and her partner, Louis van Amstel. “I’ve made it this far, the halfway point, I would be so disappointed to go home now,” Nash said. Early in the show, Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke recreated the Argentine tango that the judges raved over the night before. Singer Melissa Etheridge and guitarist Benise also performed. With only six celebrities remaining, two middle-of-the-pack pairs are starting to give favorites Nicole Scherzinger and Evan Lysacek a run for their money. Erin Andrews and Ochocinco were called the breakthrough performers of the week. Ochocinco said he’s continuing to get more into a comfort zone and was pleased that the judges are starting to take notice of his hard work. “It’s very refreshing. With all the time and work that Cheryl and I have put in … it’s about time to get some love from them,” he said. “It’s extra motivation. It’s nice to hear a change.” Did you agree with last night’s elimination on “Dancing With the Stars”? Sound off in the comments. Related Photos The 2010 Cast Of ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Tim Urban Sent Packing During ‘Idol Gives Back’

Elimination came after a night of all-star performances and fundraising pleas. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban on “American Idol” (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was focused on “Idol Gives Back,” so the two-hour-plus show devoted most of the airtime to raising funds for children’s charities with a series of celebrity pleas and performances from Mary J. Blige , Carrie Underwood, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and several others. But there was an elimination to take care of, and after visiting the bottom three on three earlier occasions, the sand finally ran out of the hourglass for Texas singer Tim Urban. A Look Back At Tim Urban’s ‘Idol’ Journey With help from comedian George Lopez, the first step toward cutting the group down to six came with a role reversal, as Lopez judged the judges for a change. He told Randy Jackson to come up with something to say besides “pitchy” and encouraged Kara DioGuardi to formulate her own thoughts, giving both of them a pass and declaring them safe. Addressing his pal Ellen DeGeneres, whom he faulted for loving too much, and Simon Cowell, whose size-small T-shirts and flirtation with Ryan Seacrest he mocked, Lopez gave Ellen the pass but said Cowell had to return to England immediately. Because of the Icelandic volcano, though, he said Cowell could hang out. That made way for Ryan Seacrest to call Casey James and Crystal Bowersox center stage, where he sent James to the bottom three for the first time this season after a lackluster Fleetwood Mac cover. MamaSox was sent back to safety after her emotional performance on Tuesday night. Next up were Lee Dewyze and Aaron Kelly, with the high-schooler taking a seat next to James in the bottom three after a lukewarm response from the judges for his cover of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Urban were the last group to face Seacrest, with Urban ending up in the bottom three yet again after America agreed with Ellen that his rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” just wasn’t their cup of soup. With the show running more than 20 minutes over, the elimination was finally due, as Seacrest sent Kelly to safety yet again, followed by James. Calling Tim the “comeback kid,” Seacrest stood next to the always-smiling mop-topped singer. As he watched his goodbye segment, Urban was surrounded by the final six, though he did not get a chance to sing one more time, likely because of the show running so far over. Next week’s mentor will be country icon Shania Twain, and the remaining six-pack will choose from her songs during Tuesday night’s performance show. What did you think of Tim Urban’s elimination? Simon Cowell Says It Won’t Be Hard To Leave ‘American Idol’

Ryan Seacrest and judges visit ‘Larry King Live’ to promote ‘Idol Gives Back.’ By Gil Kaufman Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Simon Cowell has not publicly talked very much about his feelings on leaving “American Idol” at the end of the current season. But on Monday night’s “Larry King Live,” where the judges and Ryan Seacrest were promoting this week’s “Idol” season full of more on-screen tension than ever before, Cowell said that most of the testy back-and-forth between himself and Seacrest is a put on and that they are friendly in real life. “No, we get on fine,” he said. “It’s right that it’s sport.” Ellen DeGeneres also denied any real tension between the men, saying they were more like battling siblings. “They really are like brothers,” she said. “I think that Ryan likes to see what he can do to push Simon’s buttons. And Simon likes to see what he can do to push Ryan’s buttons. And they do it to each other. That’s just the way they play.” Asked how her first season was going, DeGeneres said she was having fun, but that the gig has been harder than she expected. “It’s really hard,” she said. “It’s easy to sit at home and have opinions, but when those kids are waiting for you to tell them how they sounded and — and, you know, sometimes I hear myself go, ‘I liked it,’ and then Simon is going, ‘No, you didn’t,’ you know.” Seacrest confirmed that he’d just signed a new contract that will keep him on the show for two more seasons, while DeGeneres said she’s got a five-year deal and both Jackson and DioGuardi have at least two more years on their current contracts. Earlier in the show, Seacrest told King that “Idol Gives Back” has raised more than $140 million to date for different child-related and anti-malaria charities, and all the judges discussed their travels to visit various organizations for Wednesday night’s two-hour fundraiser/elimination show. After taking a year off due to the financial crisis, the third edition of the all-star show will feature Justin Bieber, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood and the Black Eyed Peas. ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: Kate Gosselin ‘Has No Motivation’

Nicole Scherzinger’s ‘Pretty Woman’ tango, however, earns high praise on ‘movie night.’ By Kelley L. Carter Kate Gosselin and Tony Dovolani Photo: ABC The drama was upped Monday night on “Dancing With the Stars.” Of course, comedy, music and action were in the mix too, given that the theme was “movie night,” and the celebs were shimmying and doing the splits to tunes heard in popular films. Comedian Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel, who wanted to come back strong after flatlining on the rumba last week, were up first. The duo performed the jive from “La Bamba,” and at a practice before the dance, Nash joked, “I’m looking forward to shaking things I didn’t even realize I had.” She ended her performance with a big kiss on judge Len Goodman’s forehead, but that did nothing to help boost her score. The judges thought the performance lacked the necessary sharpness that should be present at this stage of the game. “You got your personality into that dance, which is great,” Goodman said. “There should have been more bounce in your feet. There was plenty of bounce in your bazookas, but we wanted it more in your feet.” Still, he thought the approach to her dance was great and an improvement. “On behalf of thick girls everywhere, y’all need to vote for me. I’m tired and I’m hungry. That was a lot,” Nash joked. Score: 18 out of 30. Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke hoped to build on the momentum of last week’s touchdown performance, dancing a quickstep to “Jungle Book” track, “Bear Necessities.” The judges thought the football player lost the refinement and control that he pulled off the week earlier, saying that the hold and frame were terrible. “It’s very unnerving,” Carrie Ann Inaba said. “What was lacking most was the body contact.” Score: 18. ESPN reporter Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took a page from “Pulp Fiction” and channeled their inner John Travolta and Uma Thurman. Goodman said it was a tough routine, though they coped with it really well. “This is your best timing, ever,” Bruno Tonioli observed. Score: 22. Jake Pavelka started his dance with partner Chelsie Hightower with his pants on the ground as an homage to Tom Cruise in “Risky Business.” The couple did what the judges thought was an animated and fun cha-cha to Bob Seger’s big hit “Old Time Rock and Roll.” “You got the guts, so you better enjoy the glory. I loved that dance; the whole package,” Inaba said. Score: 23. Pamela Anderson and Damian Whitewood picked Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” flick and tune for their quickstep and impressed the judges. “Every week you’re in character right through the dance. You never lose it,” Tonioli said. Inaba suggested that Anderson was so entertaining that she should consider performing on Broadway. “There’s something about you that is fascinating to watch,” Inaba told her. Score: 21. Kate Gosselin and Tony Dovolani did the foxtrot to “Don’t You Forget About Me” from “The Breakfast Club.” Gosselin’s partner was frustrated with her leading up to Monday night’s show. “Kate has no motivation, and I have to push her every week,” Dovolani said. The judges also weren’t thrilled. “There is some sort of grace that is developing,” Inaba said. “I give you a lot of credit for that. But when I watch you dance, it’s kind of like the Charlie Brown teacher. It never becomes a formed sentence or a formed move.” Goodman agreed, saying, “It wasn’t really a dance, it was a stroll. It had an elegance about it, but you’ve got to dance out more.” They were this week’s low scorers, with a 15. Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough danced a tango to “Pretty Woman,” and collected the night’s highest marks from the judges. “Well, Nicole, that for me was your best dance and the best dance of the season so far,” Goodman said. Tonioli called them the two players at the top of the game. “The lines were incredible,” Inaba said. “You could have taken a snapshot and it would have been art; beautiful.” Score: 29. Olympian Evan Lysacek and his partner Anna Trebunskaya took on the rumba to music from “Armageddon.” The judges found their moves sophisticated and Lysacek’s hip action fluid. “This had artistry. It had musicality. You got the hip action going. I thought you did a great job, Evan,” Goodman said. Score: 27. What did you think of last night’s “Dancing With the Stars”? ‘American Idol’ Judge Randy Jackson Explains Michael Lynche Save

‘It was the right thing to do,’ Jackson says of judges’ decision to reverse his elimination. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Randy Jackson and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News This week, the “American Idol” judges decided to use their one-time-only save on Michael Lynche , who came close to going home this week. Some “Idol” fans and experts were surprised that they used the save so early in the season, but Randy Jackson says Big Mike earned it. “It was the right thing to do,” Jackson told MTV News at the “America’s Best Dance Crew” finale on Thursday night. “He sang his brains out [Wednesday] night. It was the right thing to do. I’m happy we did it.” Jackson knows that the decision had to be taken seriously, since it means they won’t be able to reverse America’s votes if another judges’ favorite gets eliminated. “We get one save in the season. He was so good [Wednesday] night, and this is a singing competition,” he explained. “And he was the best singer in the whole show [Wednesday] night. “We started our discussions and were saying, ‘My god, well, he’s singing amazing tonight,’ even though he’s had up and down weeks,” he continued, describing their deliberation process. And Jackson thinks that Mike didn’t get the lowest number of votes because he lacks fans. “I think he would have been safe, and I think they forgot to vote for him thinking, ‘Ah, he’s going to be there [next week].’ ” Do you think the judges used their save on the right guy? Michael Lynche’s Save: ‘American Idol’ Experts, Fans Weigh In

‘Bad decision with this many weeks left!’ one MTV reader writes. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX For once, “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest wasn’t exaggerating when he promised that Wednesday night’s results show would be a shocker . On a night when many predicted that Aaron Kelly’s “Idol” journey would be coming to a halt , instead it was burly personal trainer and new dad Michael Lynche facing the sing of shame. Lynche, who has emerged as one of the strongest contenders in an otherwise lackluster season nine, pulled out his big guns in an attempt to stay in the mix, reprising his lauded cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” and earning the season’s only save. He was on the chopping block despite a mostly praised R&B spin on “Eleanor Rigby” on Tuesday night. “I was absolutely shocked,” Rickey Yaneza, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site Rickey.org , said about Lynche landing in the bottom three alongside Kelly and Andrew Garcia. “I didn’t think he’d end up getting the least amount of votes, but I think they made the right call.” Yaneza said Lynche’s “Woman’s Work” was one of the best performances of the season so far, and the reprise was more than enough to earn his spot back. As for what happened to put Lynche in the crosshairs, Yaneza speculated that the brawny singer’s fans may have gotten complacent, while supporters of Kelly and Garcia pulled it together and rallied enough votes to keep them in the competition. “Aaron and Andrew’s fans worked their butts off overnight knowing their guys were in trouble,” he said, noting that Lynche’s fanbase has never been as strong as those for other on-the-bubble contestants such as Kelly, Garcia and “Teflon” Tim Urban. MTV’s own “Idol” disciple, Jim Cantiello, was surprised that the judges used their one-and-only save for Lynche, assuming they’d save it for one of the other front-runners. “Given the way this season is going, I assumed they’d only use it on Crystal Bowersox or perhaps Lee Dewyze,” he said. “Michael was a likable guy, but he’s been railed for giving overdramatic performances. Tuesday night, he went way over the top and Simon was quite vocal in his disapproval. So for 24 hours later to have passed and now the judges are unanimous in giving this guy another shot? It was unexpected.” Cantiello disagreed with the move, saying Lynche had reverted back to his “over-emotive” habits. “After his results-show interview where he told Seacrest that people should just download his studio recordings if they’re not feeling his onstage antics?” Cantiello said. “That right there proves he has no intention of pulling back. America wasn’t feeling his dinner-theater performance style, voted him off, and then the judges gave him a free pass to keep doing what he’s doing. If he doesn’t tone it down next week, he’ll be the lowest vote-getter all over again.” MTV readers reacted strongly to the drama, with Kevin writing, “Now what do they do if someone that is talented and could have a future in the business like Crystal doesn’t get enough votes one week? Bad decision with this many weeks left!” Rick took a more academic approach, arguing that the judges shouldn’t have saved Lynche because “when your vote total is that low, then your fanbase is highly unlikely to carry you through and you’re going home within the next few weeks anyway. I don’t think you break out the save until there is seven or even six left. In that case you could potentially save the winner.” MJ Santilli, who runs the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , isn’t a fan of the save in general, feeling that the “Idol” chips should fall where they may with no interference from the judges. “Surprise boots are part of the ‘Idol’ experience. Everyone gets over it and moves on,” she said. “So I’m happy to have it out of the way for the season.” That said, if the save has to be deployed, she was fine with Lynche being the beneficiary. “There are at least four contestants who should be heading out the door before Mike Lynche: Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban have all had spotty track records, at best, on the ‘Idol’ stage,” she said. “Plus, Mike is one of the few contestants left with decent performance skills, and now that Paige Miles is gone, he’s the only R&B singer in the group.” Santilli was also surprised at Lynche’s elimination because she figured his fanbase wasn’t being split with any of the other contestants. But the problem now, she said, was that if one of the other front-runners — such as Bowersox, Dewyze or Siobhan Magnus — is eliminated in the next few weeks, the judges can’t do a thing about it. “And there goes that feel-good save they could have used during ‘Idol Gives Back,’ ” she lamented. Judging the Judges’ Save on American Idol: Did Justice Prevail?

Hooray! Not so much? This week, American Idol ‘s voters grew a pair and almost eliminated a dude . But before that pig could fly, the judges whipped out a pocket veto and fired it square at the showstopping vest of Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, who sang a decent “Eleanor Rigby” this week and still scored the lowest number of votes. The new father Lynche, whose wife enjoyed a very famous cervix during Hollywood Week, lives to meet mentor Adam Lambert . Are we happy for Big Mike’s triumph?
