‘American Idol’ Judges Save Michael Lynche

He was joined by Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly in this week’s bottom three. By James Montgomery Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox On Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” we had extended didgeridoo bellowing, a winsome bagpiper slowly descending a staircase and a dude bounding onstage to embrace Siobhan Magnus. How would Wednesday’s (April 7) results show top all that WTF-ness? With a controversial judges’ save, of course! Viewers decreed that it was big-hearted (and equally big-bodied) crooner Michael Lynche’s turn to go — a bit of a shock after the “Idol” judges praised his reworking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Ribgy” — and as the studio audience howled their disapproval, Lynche strode to the center of the stage and belted out a version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” the same song that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears a few weeks earlier. As Lynche finished, the audience cheered wildly, his wife wept, and the judges conferred. Simon Cowell played the drama to the hilt, speaking in slow, pregnant pauses as the room fell deathly quiet. “The frustrating thing is, Michael, is that we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position you’re in right now,” Cowell said. “We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous, Michael, if it’s any comfort, and we have decided we’re going to see you next week.” With that, the audience squealed with delight (Lynche’s wife nearly leapt out of her dress), and the man dubbed “Big Mike” was mobbed by his fellow “Idol” contestants. Even the judges seemed to be excited, giving him a standing ovation as Lynche pounded his chest and blew kisses to his wife. Lynche’s save, of course, means that two “Idol” hopefuls will be getting the boot next week, and we suspect things will be a lot less jovial then. Wednesday’s bottom three was made up entirely of guys — Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly — a fact “Idol” producers didn’t reveal until more than 30 minutes into the show and only after performances by Jason Der

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Sends Buzz Aldrin Home

The 80-year-old astronaut is eliminated, as Kate Gosselin narrowly escapes the ax. By Kelley L. Carter Ashly Costa and Buzz Aldrin hug fair-well after being voted off Photo: ABC Kate plus eight (other celebrities, that is) are sticking around. Despite finishing second-to-last on Monday night and getting unfavorable comments from the judges — “You had the look of the super bitch from hell,” Bruno Tonioli said to her the night before — Kate Gosselin remains on 10th season of “Dancing With the Stars.” It was 80-year-old former astronaut (and MTV icon) Buzz Aldrin , Monday night’s low-scorer, who was sent home. The results shocked the judges, who thought that the viewers at home would save him, despite not being the experts’ favorite. “I did this show for the fighter pilots out there, the military people and the elder geezers like me, who would just like to see an elder come back week after week,” Aldrin said in his sign-off. The first two safe celebrities of the night were soap stud Aiden Turner and ESPN’s Erin Andrews. Gosselin landed in the bottom three, but she and partner Tony Dovolani were able to slide by with the popular vote. Aldrin and partner Ashly Costa were saluted by the other contestants as they did an encore of their waltz. The second results show of the season featured a performance by country music superstar Reba McEntire, who added some down-home flavor to the show, singing while four cowboy-dressed dancers strutted in front of her. McEntire also revealed that her season favorites are Erin Andrews, Evan Lysacek and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. “There are other bitter people backstage,” co-host Tom Bergeron joked in response.

American Idol Recap: Tim Urban Doesn’t Suck!

Tim Urban is a very nice guy, with a great smile and an even better attitude. But, let’s face it: the singer isn’t really American Idol finalist matieral. Heck, he’s scarcely American Idol semifinalist material, only advancing to the top 24 of season nine after another contestant got disqualified. It’s difficult not to root for Urban, however. Which made his rendition of “All My Loving” so refreshing this week. Not only did Tim avoid another embarrassing critique at the hands of the judges, he actually finished in the top three! Well, THG’s top three at least. Here’s how we’d rank last night’s Beatles-inspired performances: Casey James : Taking a page from the solo John Lennon catalog, Kara’s former crush put on a tender, touching rendition of “Jealous Guy.” Crystal Bowersox : She played a didgeridoo for “Come Together.” Yes, that’s a wind instrument. And playing it on stage made us love Crystal even more. Tim Urban: Did this rendition remind anyone else of The Plain White T’s? Great work all around. Michael Lynche: We still can’t envision Big Mike winning it all. Accompanied by a mini orchestra on stage, though, Lynche made his heart show through again with “Eleanor Rigby.” Siobhan Magnus: Look at that outfit (below)! Such a unique contestant, with a sound that also ensures she’ll stand out. Went with “Across the Universe.” Lee DeWyze : The judges loved his confidence, but we didn’t think it was Lee’s best performance. It’s a difficult, well-known song to try and cover. Katie Stevens: Great vocals, didn’t seem too old for a change… but Katie still doesn’t do it for us. She did change “Hey Jude” and made it her own, but that’s not always a great thing. Andrew Garcia: Considered “corny” by the judges. Can we all forget his Paula Abdul rendition weeks ago and just admit that Garcia won’t be around much longer? Aaron Kelly: Sorry. You’re cute, but that isn’t enough to make this version of “The Long and Winding Road” remotely memorable. Who was your favorite performer of the evening? Ryan Seacrest Says He And Simon Cowell Are ‘Actually Friendly’

‘We have a very competitive spirit and attitude on the show,’ ‘American Idol’ host says on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell Photo: Kevin Parry/ WireImage When Ryan Seacrest stopped by “American Idol” judge Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show for an episode airing on Tuesday (April 6), he answered some of the fans’ burning questions and addressed his antagonistic relationship with Simon Cowell. “We’re roommates,” Seacrest joked, before explaining that their relationship this season is no different than in past seasons, but the difference in the audience’s perception might just be visual. “They built this great little bridge — it used to be like a moat between the stage and the judges’ table. But now there is this bridge, and sometimes it is hard to hear in there, so I approached … the bench a few times, which makes [Simon] really uncomfortable … which makes me happy.” Seacrest said despite their animosity on the show, he and Cowell actually get along better than people might expect. “We’re actually friendly. We don’t hold a grudge,” he said. “We have a very competitive spirit and attitude on the show, but we’re friends. I would be there for him if he needed a loan or something… because he’s really hurting.” Fans also wanted to know what the judges do when the show goes on commercial breaks. Seacrest and DeGeneres revealed that the judges leave the studio to go outside and get some fresh air — something that initially surprised DeGeneres. “I thought we would just sit there, like I do during commercial breaks,” she said. “[On my show] there’s dancing; there’s all kinds of stuff. [On ‘Idol’] they all just get up and walk out, so I’m like, ‘I’m not just going to sit here,’ so I get up. Simon goes out to smoke a cigarette, and Kara’s doing something and Randy. And I’m just kind of out there because I don’t want to be by myself. And they start walking back when they’re counting down, 9, 8, literally 1, and we’re sitting in our chair.” What do you think of the fan queries? What would you like to know about the show? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: Evan Lysacek Pulls Ahead Of The Pack

Judges said Nicole Scherzinger didn’t follow the rules with her quickstep. By Kelley L. Carter Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya Photo: ABC On Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars,” the dancers were told to tell a story with movement, and for some of the celebrities, it was quite a challenge. Up first were Olympian Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya, who followed last week’s high-kicking jumping jive routine with a quickstep to a tune from “Chicago.” Their story, a husband and wife who were arguing because she was late for a date, was a major hit with the judges. Lysacek danced on a couple of broken toes, he revealed later, and they were still able to earn 26 out of 30. Following them was former astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Ashly Costa, who danced a graceful waltz. The concern going in was that Aldrin would over-think his movements, “I just don’t know if I can turn off my mind and just move,” Aldrin said. Theirs was a story of a soldier’s return to his daughter — judge Bruno Tonioli said that Aldrin looked regal; Carrie Ann Inaba said he got points for storytelling through the routine. Overall, judges found the 80-year-old’s technique poor and gave the duo 13 points. “Bachelor” star Jake Pavelka says he’s been bitten by the dancing bug. It showed when he and partner Chelsie Hightower took the stage, doing a dramatic quickstep to the Bangles tune, “Walk Like an Egyptian.” They gyrated and shimmied all over the stage, incorporating Egyptian hand freezes into their routine to convey the story of Cleopatra and an explorer. Judges loved that they appropriated the Egyptian moves into their dance; they also got high marks for the slick production, earning a score of 21. Comedian Niecy Nash and Louis Van Amstel waltzed as a couple from the ’60s who fall in love despite their racial differences. Judge Len Goodman thought they pulled off the emotion of the dance, but said they must work on better technique moving forward. Inaba wasn’t sure that the story came across in the dance. “I’m not used to seeing people see me cry,” Nash admitted. “I’m used to people seeing me be funny. I felt so vulnerable. It made me a little bit nervous when I got out there.” The judges gave them a 21. Chad Ochocinco performed a paso doble, in which he tried to seduce his partner, Cheryl Burke, but she wanted nothing to do with him. “Our paso doble is art imitating life for us. For real. I continue to try, and I keep getting rejected,” he joked. “The power is back. The presence is back. … But you still danced like a crackhead,” Tonioli said. Still, judges thought he was much better than last week, saying he came out with determination and dominated the dance enough to earned 20 points. Crowd favorite Pamela Anderson was surprised last week when she and Damian Whitewood landed in the bottom two. She said she cried all night, put it behind her and moved on. This week, she played the role of a gypsy flamenco dancer. “I’ve always been an animal activist, and I thought bullfighting was so senseless and violent,” she said, adding that she used that passion in the paso doble. Judges praised her fluid movement. “I thought you had an intensity about it. … You need refinement in the dance, that’s all,” Goodman said. Judges gave the duo 21 points. Soap star Aiden Turner and his partner Edyta Sliwinska performed a quickstep, “The quickstep should be carefree, and to me this was a little bit careful,” Goodman said. “I would like for you to go for it a little bit more.” In spite of that, judges thought his confidence was growing and that he was improving, despite being a little too light and bubbly on his feet. “The quickstep is the hardest thing I’ve ever learned. Wow. What a week it’s been,” Turner said. Judges gave them a 20. ESPN reporter Erin Andrews did a waltz that was fairly similar to last week’s foxtrot. In a story that was all about trust, she gave herself to her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy and had to follow him … blindfolded. “My biggest concern while wearing a blindfold, is I don’t want to trip on my feet and take a tumble right into all the people sitting in the front row!” Goodman thought it was a boring start, and said they should have done more waltzing. Judges gave them a 23. Kate Gosselin and Tony Dovolani did a paso doble to Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” a song that the reality star said speaks directly to her. She channeled that experience and let loose some frustrations in a dance that the judges called odd and strange. Goodman said it looked as though she overcame her nerves but that the entire performance was pedestrian. “You had the look of the super bitch from hell,” Tonioli said, before the judges gave them a 15. Completing the final dance was Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough , who earned the first 10s of the season last week. “My goal is to challenge myself more and more every week. We’re not taking the easy road on this dance,” she said of their quickstep to Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.” Goodman said they broke the rules, and that even though their routine was beautifully done, it wasn’t a quickstep. “We weren’t trying to be disrespectful in anyway, but we did take the song literally,” Scherzinger said. “We just wanted to have fun with it.” They earned a 23. Project Runway’s Jonathan Peters on Stubborn Judges and the Problem with ‘Project Personality’

Jonathan Peters has taken a beating from the judges during this season of Project Runway , and it all came to a head in last night episode after tart harangues from Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, and Heidi Klum, who was supposed to wear the winning garment to a red-carpet event. Now that he’s been eliminated, the 29-year-old Rhode Islander opens up to Movieline about the judges’ misinformed ideas, Tim Gunn’s role, and how he felt when Maya Luz auf’d herself.

Why Did Maya Luz Quit Project Runway? She Explains It to Movieline

Last night’s episode of Project Runway featured a jarring triad of events: an elimination, the return of an evicted contestant, and a baffling exit from 22-year-old Santa Fe designer Maya Luz. The young, über-banged talent claimed she wasn’t ready for Bryant Park’s big stage, and opted to leave the competition prior to beginning this week’s challenge. Now that she’s had time to mull over the ramifications of her exit, Movieline caught up with Maya to discuss her reasons for leaving, her ambitions, and unfair criticisms from the judges.

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Meet New Lee Dewyze, Bizarro Ryan Seacrest

Tim Urban’s dedicated fans save him one more time, as Didi Benami goes home. By Jim Cantiello Lee DeWyze Photo: Michael Becker / FOX “American Idol” in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello’s bite-size recap of this week’s “Idol” high jinks. This week’s “American Idol” introduced viewers to several new characters. We met the new and improved Lee Dewyze , who now has the ability to sing on key! We met Mama Garcia, a feisty “Idol” parent who isn’t afraid to (jokingly) get in Simon Cowell’s face when she disagrees with him. And we met Ryan Seacrest’s evil twin brother, also named Ryan Seacrest, but whose style of hosting includes forcing contestants to talk about their dead friends, speaking in offensive accents and urging judges to make out with each other. Bizarro Ryan Seacrest’s off-putting antics made us long for Brian Dunkleman. Shudder! But that’s not all that was new. Thanks to the addition of backstage cameras, viewers

Didi Benami Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

Tim Urban and Katie Stevens survive the bottom three amid performances by Usher, Diddy-Dirty Money and Ruben Studdard. By Gil Kaufman Didi Benami on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox It was another week with no save on “American Idol.” Didi Benami’s ride to potential stardom screeched to a halt Wednesday night (March 31) when even a strong reprise of her signature Fleetwood Mac cover wasn’t enough to keep her in the game. The action-packed hour featured performances from Usher, season-two “Idol” champ Ruben Studdard and Diddy-Dirty Money, as well as a visit from Justin Bieber, but all eyes were on the top 10, as nearly half the finalists were potential bottom-three fodder after an uneven night of R&B performances on Tuesday. It’s on to the next one, though, for Lee Dewyze, Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Siobhan Magnus, who survived after her wobbly take on Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire” elicited a thumbs-down across the board from the judges. Also safe were Crystal Bowersox, Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynche, who celebrated his luck with a near body slam of Ryan Seacrest after the host tried to fake him out. Teen Katie Stevens had no such luck, taking another trip to the bottom three after the judges had mixed reviews for her cover of Aretha Franklin’s iconic “Chain of Fools.” She was joined, not surprisingly, by Benami, who got mostly poor notices for her jazzy attempt at “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” a departure from her singer/songwriter lane that drew predictions of a trip home from our “Idol” experts . Joining them was perma-grinning “Teflon” Tim Urban, who got flamed for his shambolic attempt at Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love.” He took the time to explain that the reason he’s always smiling onstage is that he appreciates the opportunity to sing for millions, and if it’s his last chance to do so, he doesn’t want to leave the stage wearing a frown. The sojourn in the cellar was short for Stevens, who was the first one sent back to safety, followed by the seemingly bulletproof Urban, who busted out his signature smile upon hearing the news. Benami gave it one more chance, taking another swing at her well-received folky ramble through Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” which she imbued with the coffeehouse flavor that made the judges fall in love with her the first time. Though she flubbed a note near the end, the performance was a mostly strong one, but, alas, not enough to keep her in the mix. After not even considering the save last week when they sent Paige Miles packing , Simon Cowell seemed torn over whether to bust it out this time. “It’s bad news, sweetheart. We’re not going to save you,” he said with a frown. “[But] it was a million times better than what you did last night.” Benami took a gracious bow and smiled as she watched her farewell montage before breaking into tears as her fellow finalists crowded around for a warm group hug. At the top of the show, producers amped up the drama in a whole new way, intercutting footage from the upcoming “Clash of the Titans” remake with clips from Tuesday night’s performances, setting up the night’s eliminations as a battle between the monolithic judges and the starry-eyed contestants. Among the performers was nearly slim season-two champ Studdard, who spread some velvet-teddy-bear love with his silky ode to the perfect lover, “Don’t Make ‘Em Like You No More,” working the stage like an old-school soul veteran and encouraging the audience to get into it as he swayed and bobbed to the beat. Also in the house was Justin Bieber, who was on hand to see a performance from his musical guru, this week’s “Idol” mentor, Usher. Wearing a dark suit with silver lapels and a black bowler hat, Ush popped and locked his way through his new single, the spare dance anthem “OMG,” with help from Will.I.Am. Making his “Idol” debut was Diddy, with Dirty Money, performing their new single “Hello, Good Morning” in public for the first time. The throbbing Euro-disco club burner with a Timbaland-style beat found the Bad Boy boss busting out his signature shoulder-shrugging dance moves while sporting a white leather suit and bouncing across a fog-enshrouded stage. Next week, the top nine will take on the Lennon/McCartney songbook as they sing Beatles songs. What did you think of tonight’s elimination? Did America send the right singer home?
