Who Knew? Something Called Dorothy and the Witches of Oz is Apparently Opening Friday

Can’t wait for Sam Raimi’s star-studded, mega-budget Oz: The Great and Powerful ? How about a low-budget, modern-day twist on the L. Frank Baum classic featuring Dorothy as a children’s book author (and Kansas transplant, natch) in Manhattan and co-starring Lance Henriksen, Billy Boyd and Christopher Lloyd? Oh. Well anyway, here’s the latest on Dorothy and the Witches of Oz , the erstwhile little-seen mini-series that by all appearances this weekend should become a little-seen theatrical release. Writer-director Leigh Scott’s film reportedly has one of the more roundabout broadcast/distribution records of any recent movie (save for Margaret , perhaps), but will finally come to theaters Friday. By “theaters,” I mean ” four venues in Arizona ,” with three more to follow Feb. 24 in Kansas and Kentucky. The film itself, meanwhile, appears pretty deeply NYC-centric — because no one’s ever imposed that twist on the Oz legend before: It does kind of look better than This Means War , right? And in “glorious 2D”! Well-played, team. Arizona, you are in luck! [via Big Hollywood ]

‘The Voice’ Returns For Second Season With Big Post-Super Bowl Show

Christina Aguilera And Adam Levine Spar As First Round Of “The Voice” Blind Auditions Gets Underway By John Mitchell Christina Aguilera on “The Voice” Photo: NBC “The Voice” returned to NBC for its second season immediately following Super Bowl XLVI and got right to business, kicking off the first round of blind auditions with coaches Adam Levine , Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton each picking up one team member and Christina Aguilera scoring two. Seven hopefuls stepped in front of the judges’ revolving chairs, each hoping at least one would turn and ask them be on their team. Two contestants got all four judges’ approval, but one, 24-year old Daniel Rosa from Riverside California, didn’t get a single judge to turn their chair and offer a spot and was sent home packing. The Players: Rae Lynn A teenager raised on a Texas farm, Rae Lynn entered the competition with one thing in mind: to win over judge Blake Shelton, who is married to country singer Miranda Lambert, a big hero of Rae Lynn’s. She decided to sing Lamberts “Hell on Heels” despite being warned that last season Shelton didn’t respond well when a contestant auditioned with one of his wife’s songs. But confident in her choice, she did it anyway and wowed Shelton and Levigne. Ultimately, she chose to stick with her roots and keep things country. Team Blake Jesse Campbell One of many inspiring stories told during the show, we were introduced to 42-year-old homeless father Jesse Campbell and his family. He’d barely uttered a few notes before Aguilera, Green and Levigne swiveled around (Shelton followed soon after). “You followed through above and beyond my expectations,” she told Campbell, promising to fight for him along the hard road to the “Voice” finals. Trusting that Aguilera knows a thing or two about how to get the most out of strong vocalists, Jesse picked the “Not Myself Tonight” singer. Team Xtina Juliet Simms Simms has been living the rock-and-roll life since she was a teen and is now, at 25, looking to take that next step. Simms tackled a big song too — “Oh! Darling” by the Beatles — but brought a rough, throaty edge and rocker swagger to the track that immediately attracted Levigne and Cee-Lo and, eventually, Aguilera. “You brought the house down,” Christina said to Simms. Competing over the singer’s affections even devolved into a bit of mudslinging between Aguilera and Levigne, who bickered back and forth over who could better serve Simms in the contest. She decided to go with neither and picked the most eclectic guy on the panel. Team Cee Lo Chris Mann Another of the night’s tear-jerker back stories came from Mann, a talented classical musician working in Nashville, TN, whose mother is fighting pancreatic cancer. The 29-year-old Wichita, Kansas, native was the second contestant of the competition to bowl over the judges with a big, classic voice. “Now that’s a voice,” Xtina proclaimed, “I love it!” Her enthusiasm led him to pick the “Beautiful” Grammy winner, and in the first night of competition she nailed down the two best voices in the game so far. Team Xtina Tony Lucca Hey, that guy looks familiar! Lucca was at one time a Mousketeer alongside Christina, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears on “The Mickey Mouse Club.” But it was more important here that he tore the roof off the joint with a rocking rendition of “Trouble” that earned a swivel of approval from every judge on the panel. All pleaded with him to join their team, but Aguilera seemed oblivious to the fact that she knew him as a child (a lot has happened since then, we’ll give her that). He went with Shelton, probably hoping a little of the country-rock cool that’s kept him at the top of the charts for the last few years rubs off. Team Adam After he left the stage, Aguilera realized who Lucca was and ran backstage to greet him, his wife and young daughter. She also revealed, “Britney had the biggest crush on you!” Oh, what could have been.. Did you catch “The Voice” tonight? Which contestant was your favorite? Race Matters: Forbes Publishes “If I Were A Poor Black Kid” Article That Gives Kids From The Hood Advice On How To Succeed

For some reason, Forbes.com thought it was a good idea to post an article called “If I Were A Poor Black Kid.” Check out a few excerpts and let us know your thoughts: President Obama gave an excellent speech last week in Kansas about inequality in America. “This is the defining issue of our time.” He said. “This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and for all those who are fighting to get into the middle class. Because what’s at stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home, secure their retirement.” He’s right. The spread between rich and poor has gotten wider over the decades. And the opportunities for the 99% have become harder to realize. The President’s speech got me thinking. My kids are no smarter than similar kids their age from the inner city. My kids have it much easier than their counterparts from West Philadelphia. The world is not fair to those kids mainly because they had the misfortune of being born two miles away into a more difficult part of the world and with a skin color that makes realizing the opportunities that the President spoke about that much harder. This is a fact. In 2011. I am not a poor black kid. I am a middle aged white guy who comes from a middle class white background. So life was easier for me. But that doesn’t mean that the prospects are impossible for those kids from the inner city. It doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities for them. Or that the 1% control the world and the rest of us have to fight over the scraps left behind. I don’t believe that. I believe that everyone in this country has a chance to succeed. Still. In 2011. Even a poor black kid in West Philadelphia. If I was a poor black kid I would first and most importantly work to make sure I got the best grades possible. I would make it my #1 priority to be able to read sufficiently. I wouldn’t care if I was a student at the worst public middle school in the worst inner city. Even the worst have their best. And the very best students, even at the worst schools, have more opportunities. Getting good grades is the key to having more options. With good grades you can choose different, better paths. If you do poorly in school, particularly in a lousy school, you’re severely limiting the limited opportunities you have. And I would use the technology available to me as a student. I know a few school teachers and they tell me that many inner city parents usually have or can afford cheap computers and internet service nowadays. That because (and sadly) it’s oftentimes a necessary thing to keep their kids safe at home then on the streets. If I was a poor black kid I’d use the free technology available to help me study. I’d become expert at Google Scholar. I’d visit study sites like SparkNotes and CliffsNotes to help me understand books. I’d watch relevant teachings on Academic Earth, TED and the Khan Academy. (I say relevant because some of these lectures may not be related to my work or too advanced for my age. Is this easy? No it’s not. It’s hard. It takes a special kind of kid to succeed. And to succeed even with these tools is much harder for a black kid from West Philadelphia than a white kid from the suburbs. But it’s not impossible. The tools are there. The technology is there. And the opportunities there. In Philadelphia, there are nationally recognized magnet schools like Central, Girls High and Masterman. These schools are free. But they are hard to get in to. You need good grades and good test scores. And there are also other good magnet and charter schools in the city. If I was a poor black kid I would get technical. I would learn software. I would learn how to write code. I would seek out courses in my high school that teaches these skills or figure out where to learn more online. I would study on my own. I would make sure my writing and communication skills stay polished. Because a poor black kid who gets good grades, has a part time job and becomes proficient with a technical skill will go to college. There is financial aid available. There are programs available. And no matter what he or she majors in that person will have opportunities. They will find jobs in a country of business owners like me who are starved for smart, skilled people. They will succeed. President Obama was right in his speech last week. The division between rich and poor is a national problem. But the biggest challenge we face isn’t inequality. It’s ignorance. So many kids from West Philadelphia don’t even know these opportunities exist for them. Many come from single-parent families whose mom or dad (or in many cases their grand mom) is working two jobs to survive and are just (understandably) too plain tired to do anything else in the few short hours they’re home. Technology can help these kids. But only if the kids want to be helped. Yes, there is much inequality. But the opportunity is still there in this country for those that are smart enough to go for it. Discuss… Source

You Can’t Be Serious: High School Student In Trouble At School For Tweeting Negative Comment About Kansas Governor

We’re pretty sure this is illegal… Eighteen-year-old Emma Sullivan never thought her tweet about a field trip would be seen by Gov. Sam Brownback. The Shawnee Mission East High School senior went to the Capitol and heard Brownback speak. She didn’t like what she heard. “I don’t agree with a majority of the things that he is trying to pass,” said Sullivan. Sullivan tweeted her thoughts about what she wanted to do during the speech. Sullivan’s tweet stated: “just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot.” Sullivan said she ended up in the principal’s office the next day. “He explained to me that someone from Brownback’s office got a hold of it and sent it to someone in charge of the district,” said Sullivan. She said her principal wants her to write an apology to Brownback. “I believe that it is my right to state my opinion,” said Sullivan. VML creative group members are surprised how administrators are handling this case. “She is a legal adult. She has the right to be able to share her opinion,” said Gard Gibson. Her Twitter handle, emmakate988 , had just 60 followers when she sent the tweet, but by Friday afternoon, she had more than 1,400. Sullivan hasn’t decided if she will apologize to the governor. The school’s principal said, “This is not about political views since none were given in the tweet – is about being respectful with a public official whether we agree or disagree with their viewpoints.” What part of democracy is that??? Emma says she has no intention on apologizing because even if she did, she wouldn’t mean it. Source

Baby Lisa Disappearance: Deborah Bradley Video Raises Questions

The man seen on a surveillance tape shopping with the missing Baby Lisa Irwin’s mother has been identified as the woman’s brother, according to a news report. Deborah Bradley and her brother were purchasing wine for a family event at the Festival Foods near her home in Kansas City, Mo., family members tell KCTV5. Bradley was seen in the video around 5 p.m. October 3, the same night she said she last saw her baby. Her brother was seen shopping alongside her on tape. According to the station, local police have interviewed the brother and determined that he wasn’t involved in the shocking disappearance of 10-month-old Lisa. The little girl went missing just hours after the shopping trip, triggering an investigation that has led nowhere and already taken several bizarre twists. Bradley was interviewed by authorities and fears she’ll be arrested “any moment,” a relative says, but so far no charges have been filed against anyone. Bradley and baby Lisa’s father, Jeremy Irwin, reported her missing about 4 a.m. Oct. 4. Bradley said she last checked on her daughter about 10:30 p.m. The couple says Lisa was kidnapped from her crib while she was sleeping. Meanwhile, officials are questioning the credibility of Bill Stanton, a private investigator who said someone brought him on to conduct an investigation. Area licensed private investigators say they have filed a complaint with the state licensing board since Stanton is not licensed to work in Missouri.

Kid Rock Tour To Benefit Struggling U.S Cities

Detroit rocker announces shows will raise money for local charities in each stop. By Gil Kaufman Kid Rock Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns Kid Rock has made every effort to help his beleaguered hometown of Detroit rebound from decades of economic distress. But now D-Town’s favorite son and original “American Badass” is expanding his scope with an upcoming club tour that will attempt to raise a few bucks for other struggling U.S. cities. The 10-city swing will hit intimate (at least for Rock) clubs in Maryland, New York, Indiana, Tennessee, Illinois, Colorado and Missouri, beginning on November 16 with a show at the Fillmore Auditorium in Silver Spring, Maryland. According to a press release announcing the swing, Rock “has assembled a team of Detroit titans to show support for other cities in need, and to show that Detroit, while experiencing [its] own difficulties still has the power to unite to help others around the country.” Working with this group of Detroit business leaders, Rock and company have pledged to donate money to local charities, causes and individuals through the Kid Rock Foundation at every stop on the swing. Radio stations in the local markets will help determine worthy causes. The tour was Rock’s idea, timed to coincide with the release of his latest single, “Care,” a duet with Martina McBride and T.I. on Rock’s Born Free album that urges Americans to stop bickering and take care of those in need of help. “The song says ‘the least that I can do is Care’ — and I want to put my money where my mouth is. Everyone knows that Detroit is hurting,” he said in the statement announcing the tour. “But I want to show that even though we don’t have a lot on our own plate, it doesn’t mean the people of my hometown don’t have compassion to share with others all over the country. At the end of the day we’re all Detroit, we’re one country, one family.” Considering that Kid Rock played to 12,000 or more each night on his summer Born Free arena/amphitheater tour, the upcoming dates are a big shift in terms of capacity, but also a rare opportunity to see him up-close-and-personal in such legendary room as Nashville’s 2,300-seat Ryman Auditorium; the 2,800-capacity Beacon Theatre in New York; and Boise, Idaho’s 1,000-capacity Knitting Factory. Tickets for the tour go on sale on Saturday, October 15. Dates and venues for Kid Rock tour, according to a press release:

Kris Humphries to Kim Kardashian: Let’s Pop Out Babies!

In one of the not remotely staged clips airing this Monday on the E!’s Kim’s Fairytale Wedding special , Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries try to enjoy a casual meal as a couple in this for money love. But the paparazzi are abundant, making it seriously hard for Kim and Kris to spend quality time with their own cameraman and prompting the NBA power forward to propose a solution: “Maybe you should just move to Minnesota with me. We could move into my little house on the lake, we could just start popping out babies.” Of course, Kim doesn’t react well to this idea because she’d be leaving her family. No, not Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie. The guys from OK! Weekly and In Touch who pay most of her bills… Kris Humphries to Kim Kardashian: Baby Time?
