Trey Songz’s Mom Makes Splash At BET Awards

Singer brought April Tucker onstage with him when he accepted the award for Best Male R&B Artist. By Hillary Crosley Trey Songz at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Though Prince received the biggest honor of the BET Awards with a Lifetime Achievement tribute, Trey Songz ‘s mother was the belle of the ball. Joining her son as his date, Ms. Songz made quite an impression on the show’s younger audience, so much that she earned #1 on Google’s trending topics. Born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, April Tucker gave birth to Trey, born Tremaine Neverson, at the age of seventeen. Living on welfare and in Section 8 housing, Tucker enrolled in Virginia State University and graduated six years later, earning a degree in Sociology with a minor in Administration of Justice. Serving as a juvenile probation officer in Baltimore, Maryland, and a resource specialist in several Maryland counties, Tucker grew interested in helping children. Following her then husband, who was a military man, to Junction City, Kansas, Ms. Tucker became a program manager for Big Brothers and Big Sisters there and helped children at risk. Despite her relocations to Baltimore and middle America, Tucker decided that Trey would have a better childhood with her parents back in Virginia, where he began singing in church. Now that her son Trey is a wildly popular R&B singer, Tucker and her firstborn (Trey has a younger brother named Forrest) make a point of doing charitable work. In the past, the two have given clothing donations and turkeys during Thanksgiving to Petersburg’s needy. Despite their distance, Trey and his mother are very close, and she describes him as “a regular guy with a God-given voice and talent for writing.” Responding in kind, the singer’s tattoo on his chest describes his adoration for his mother. “To God I pray may April’s showers rain on her Forrest,” reads the tattoo. “And grow the strength that started with one Rose.” Earlier in the evening, the Virginia native won the award for Best Male R&B Artist and brought his extremely good-looking mother onto the stage with him to accept his trophy. Following tonight’s show, BET will debut Trey’s documentary, “My Moment,” which follows the singer during the recent Blueprint 3 tour with Jay-Z across America. ‘Drake: Better Than Good Enough’ Documentary Airs Next Week — Watch An Exclusive Preview Here!

Documentary chronicling MC’s rise to fame airs Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. on MTV. By MTV News staff Drake in “Better Than Good Enough” Photo: MTV News Drake delivers his life in rhyme like few MCs ever have, and now the up-and-coming MC is set to pull the curtain back even further in “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” a documentary chronicling the hip-hop wunderkind’s rise to fame. The program is set to air Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. exclusively on MTV. “I have always been hesitant to share the details of my life with the world, but for the first time I am comfortable and confident that you will love this story,” Drake said of “Better Than Good Enough.” Cameras have been following the So Far Gone star since he kicked off his Away From Home Tour earlier this year. “Better Than Good Enough” also features Drake and his October’s Very Own team working hard to finish Thank Me Later, his highly anticipated debut album — which was released today — and at times it finds the young rapper struggling in intimate moments where he shares the details of his ever-changing life. We see Drake opening up about his relationship with his mother, a constant presence in his life whose love he says in unconditional; we see him admonishing his staff after a poor performance in Atlanta; and we see him he feverishly working to records last-minute vocals in time for his album’s deadline. “I’m juggling my album, my reputation as a performer, my health and my sanity,” Drake says in a clip available exclusively on MTVNews.com. “It escapes me a lot of times, how I’m even still going and how I’m gonna show up in Kansas City after working all night. It’s non-stop — you think you’re getting sleep but the sleep you’re getting isn’t really real, ’cause you’re so exhausted you’re catching up to tired. “My mom is sick,” he adds. “So that scares me a lot. She’s been the most supportive person I’ve ever had in my life — the only person that loves me unconditionally, really. I know a lot of people love me and I love a lot of people. But to love somebody unconditionally is different.” “Drake is a gifted artist whose authenticity is resonating with our audience,” said Dave Sirulnick, EVP, MTV Multiplatform, News & Music, and also an executive producer for the project. “We are thrilled that he allowed MTV the exclusive opportunity to document such an important and personal time in his life.” @radical.media is the production company for “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.” Justin Wilkes is producer; Michael John Warren is director. Leading up to the premiere of “Better Than Good Enough,” MTV News will bring you exclusive previews and deleted scenes from the project, so stay tuned! Time Offers ‘Ten Questions’ to Charlie Crist, Like ‘Who’ll Remember the Tea Party in 20 Years?’

Last year, Time offered its “Ten Questions” feature to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal , but the reader questions it selected were mostly hostile, panning his response to the State of the Union, asking if he looked like the geeky Kenneth the Page from “30 Rock,” and underlining the shakiness of the GOP: “Voters rejected the GOP in November. What changes do you think it needs to make in order to become relevant again?” This week, Time offered the same feature to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist , and the questions were not hostile, except for “Why don’t you support same-sex marriage?” and maybe “Do you still consider your support for the stimulus to have been the right choice?” There were neutral oil-spill questions, and then there were these: “How difficult was it to leave the Republican Party?” —  David Hutchinson, Kansas City, Kans. “What are the pros and cons of running as an independent?” — Kevin Waters, Harrisburg, Pa. “Will people still remember the Tea Party in 20 years?” — Justin Powlison, Raleigh, N.C. “Is our current political polarization temporary or permanent?” — Chad Dominicis, Miami “I am a liberal Republican. I s there room in the party for me?” — Jeffrey Hersh, Columbus, Ohio “Does the space program need to be saved?” The last time they offered these Questions to Republicans was to Karl Rove , and there again, Time found the questioner to ask “Is being the ‘party of no’ working for the Republicans?”

Dennis Hopper Dead At 74

‘Easy Rider’ star died of prostate cancer Saturday. By Kelley L. Carter and Jem Aswad Dennis Hopper Photo: George Rose/Getty Images Actor Dennis Hopper — star of “Easy Rider,” “Blue Velvet,” “Giant” and many other films — died Saturday of prostate cancer at his Los Angeles-area home, according to The Associated Press. He was 74. The two-time Academy Award nominee, who announced through a manager in the fall of 2009 that he had been diagnosed with the disease, was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death, family friend Alex Hitz told the AP. The actor directed, co-wrote and starred in directed 1969’s “Easy Rider,” perhaps the most memorable film of his wildly erratic, nearly six-decade-long career. In that classic, generation-defining film — which also established Jack Nicholson as a major star — he and Peter Fonda played motorcycle-riding hippies in search of America. The film was a Hollywood success story; it was produced for less than $500,000 and ultimately earned in excess of $40 million. “Easy Rider” also earned two Academy Award nominations, including a shared screenplay nod for Hopper, Fonda and Terry Southern. Born in Kansas on May 17,1936, and raised in San Diego, Hopper made his mark in movies as a teenager, starring with in James Dean, whom he idolized, in the 1950s classics “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant.” His career followed a bumpy path over the decades, veering between fame and obscurity — due in equal measure to substance abuse and his legendarily rebellious personality — before being permanently revived by his memorable 1986 role as the psychotic Frank in “Blue Velvet.” He appeared in dozens of films over the years, including “Apocalypse Now,” “Hoosiers,” “Speed,” “River’s Edge,” “Rumblefish,” “True Romance,” “True Grit,” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” to name just a few; he also made many television appearances, including “24” and “The Twlight Zone.” His directing credits included “Colors,” “The Hot Spot,” “Chasers” and “The Last Movie,” his disastrous 1971 follow-up to “Easy Rider,” the production of which was so erratic that it effectively blackballed him from the film industry for years. Hopper’s personal life was no less dramatic than his work: Married five times (including an eight-day marriage to Mamas & the Papas singer Michelle Phillips in 1970), he struggled for many years with alcoholism and drug abuse before becoming sober in the 1980s. He filed for divorce from his fifth wife, Victoria Duffy, in January, after 14 years of marriage and one child (daughter Galen Grier). He was also an avid photographer and art collector. Hopper appeared frail when he was awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March of this year. His work will still continue; in September he will be heard as one of the lead voices in “Alpha and Omega.” Hopper seemed to be acutely aware of his own mortality, telling Time magazine in 1986: “I thought I’d be dead before I was 30. Turning 40 stunned me. Fifty is a major miracle, and I think I may even make 70.” Share your memories of Dennis Hopper in the comments below. Related Photos Dennis Hopper: A Life In Photos

Chely Wright Makes It Official: I’m Gay

It’s official: Chely Wright is gay. The country music singer tells this week’s issue of People : “Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out.” That moment has arrived, but Wright says it took awhile to get there. Growing up in the south (she was born in Kansas City, Missouri), the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist in 1994 said she doesn’t have “a memory in my life that doesn’t include the dream of making music.” But she resided in a world that shunned homosexuality and, therefore, “hid everything for my music.” Why come out now? The news coincides with the release of Wright’s memoir this week Like Me , as well as her first album in five years, Lifted off the Ground . Part of the official synopsis for the book reads that Wright made “a pact with God: to keep her “sinning” to a minimum if he’d get her to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.” We’re proud of her for finally revealing her true true to the world. What do you think of this announcement?
