The Masterful Mischief of Gremlins 2

Only in Hollywood: “In the commentary on the Gremlins 2 DVD, which has been ported over to its Blu-ray (out this week), [director Joe] Dante calls Gremlins 2 ‘one of the more unconventional studio pictures ever. And if it weren’t for the fact that the studio was in dire need of another one of these movies to put into the cans and send to the theaters, I can’t conceive of us getting away with this.’ He took advantage of that dire need by taking the piss. On that same commentary, [producer Michael] Finnell recalls Warner Bros. head Terry Semel telling them, ‘Just come up with something. Whatever you want. It doesn’t matter. Between 90 minutes and two hours, call it Gremlins 2 , and we’ll make it.'” [ Gawker ]

Canadians at Cannes May Talk to Kristen Stewart For the Low, Low Price of $1,293

It’s one thing for distribution deals to precede the Cannes Film Festival. It’s another thing altogether for the actual absurdity of the annual event to commence before anyone even sets foot on a red carpet. To wit, get a load of this Canadian company trying to sell press access to their stars Kristen Stewart and Brad Pitt. Tacky! Deadline relays the tale of Alliance Films’ junkets for On the Road and Killing Them Softly , where Canadian journalists are welcome to catch up with Stewart and Pitt one-on-one — for the low, low prices of $1,293 and $3,232 (respectively). Junketing on the Croisette is expensive, you see, and since Alliance says it intends to bring both actors to North America for, er, complimentary press days later this year, the film journalists of Canada can either wait or have the first crack by helping foot the bill to welcome the more crucial international crowd. On the one hand it makes sense: These films are likely Toronto Film Festival-bound in September, where many more local and American press will flock for coverage anyway. There’s no reason to squander your talent’s precious, limited time on press they’ll likely get in four months. It’s also not unprecedented; Harvey Weinstein famously tried to usurp $1,500 from journalists wanting to cover Death Proof at Cannes in 2007. On the other hand, come on , Alliance. There are classier ways to handle this dilemma: “Alliance decided not to partake in the Cannes junkets for Killing Them Softly and On the Road , however we wanted to provide Canadian journalists the opportunity to participate directly if they so choose,” a company spokesperson told Deadline . As an insider told Deadline: “Of course it looks bad. But with the company possibly for sale, there’s a lot of pressure to keep as many costs down as possible. A pricey Cannes junket for two American movies that are already coming here later seemed an obvious place to save money.” Totally agreed! But to turn around and offer the interviews anyway for a price? Who approved that ? Velvet Jones? Oh , Canada. Stay tuned to Movieline for more from the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, which commences May 16. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Kristen Stewart Admits She’s ‘Overtly Aware’ Of Her Insecurities

During ‘MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman,’ actress confesses, ‘My palms are sweating right now.’ By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Horowitz, Kristen Stewart and Sam Claflin on “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: MTV News On Tuesday night’s “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman,” MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with Kristen Stewart , Chris Hemsworth , Charlize Theron and Sam Claflin to get the juicy details behind their highly anticipated summer flick. The cast was in good spirits as Horowitz took them through a series of rapid-fire questions known as the “Yes/No Show” and Theron joked about how battling her costumes was more difficult than fighting Stewart. But the actors also discussed the more serious topic of insecurities and their perception of beauty. As the underlying message of the film deals with the notion of beauty and outward appearance, Horowitz asked, “[As actors,] are you naturally vain people? Can you look in the mirror and not feel insecure like the rest of us?” He threw the question to Hemsworth, who replied, “I think we all have our insecurities and whatever. Do I like who I see in the mirror? Yeah, I like myself because I feel like I’m a good person, and I think in the film, the Queen is there and obsessed with beauty on the surface. I think the message is it’s what’s underneath that counts and that’s what’s going to survive and conquer at the end of the day.” Hemsworth’s co-star Stewart was thrust into the spotlight upon her unexpected “Twilight Saga” fame. With her privacy invaded and gossip blogs picking apart every outfit and hairstyle choice, you’d think the actress would get wrapped up in her insecurities. But the actress said she’s feels secure in herself and Theron echoed that sentiment: “You are,” the “Young Adult” actress said of Stewart. “I can say that. Seriously, it’s incredible. I never had that at her age.” And while Stewart still gets nervous like the rest of us, she gives credit to her parents for raising her well and teaching her that self-worth doesn’t come from appearances. “I’m still fully and completely overtly aware of my insecurities. My palms are sweating right now,” she said. “I was raised well. My parents are really great. They’ve always told me the right things about how you should feel — I mean, there’s no should. That was the whole thing: ‘Be yourself, baby doll.’ ” Theron chimed in: “And, in a way, the film almost has that because Snow White’s mother basically tells her, ‘What you have here is special and good, and don’t ever lose that.’ And it’s the encouragement of ‘Be a good a person.’ And Ravenna, the evil queen, has a mother that basically tells her the only way you will survive in this world is through beauty and youth. “I think those are the things that guide you in a way, so if you’re being told that, and you go through life having that be the importance of your existence or your success, than that’s what it’s going to be.” In the movie, Ravenna says that men use women and then discard them. Theron said that while those words might not mirror her view on men, it was some of her favorite writing in the script, and she feels the sentiment rings true for a lot of women. “I thought it was incredibly brave, because you’re kind of putting yourself out there to create and say pretty early on in the film that this character is driven by this belief that she has,” she explained. “But I thought it was really truthful for her , and I do think that is the truth for a lot of people. “I think that there will be women who have experienced that sometimes in their life. I don’t think everyone has the same experiences, but I felt like that was very truthful for Ravenna. You know, this idea that at 8, she’s being given to a king, and by 16, she’s already being replaced by somebody else. How can you come from that world and not think that men only use you for a certain period of time and then they’re done with you?” Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White and the Huntsman.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Kristen Stewart, On the Road Coming to America Via IFC Films/Sundance Selects

The 2012 Cannes Film Festival remains a week away, but the wheeling and dealing is already underway — and probably not coincidentally, for competition films starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Last week it was Pattinson’s edgy David Cronenberg collaboration Cosmopolis going to E One , and tonight it’s Stewart’s long-awaited Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road — just announced as the proud acquisition of IFC Films and Sundance Selects. Read on for the full details, and stay tuned to Movieline for more fest news as Cannes 2012 approaches. =========== New York, NY (May 8, 2012) – AMC Networks announced today the acquisition of all US rights to acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles’ ON THE ROAD to be released jointly by the company’s film distribution labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects. Based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, the film stars Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst and features performances by Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga, Elisabeth Moss and Viggo Mortensen. The screenplay is by Jose Rivera (Academy Award® nominee for THE MOTORCYLE DIARIES). The MK2 Production was produced by Nathanael Karmitz, Charles Gillibert, Rebecca Yeldham and Roman Coppola for American Zoetrope. Executive producer Francis Ford Coppola has been developing the project since 1978. The World Premiere for ON THE ROAD is set for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in the Competition Section. A major theatrical release is planned for late Fall. Josh Sapan, CEO and President of AMC Networks said of the film, “Walter Salles has made an ambitious and accomplished film out of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel. It’s a classic road movie with career-making performances from Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley, and a terrific showcase for Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst. This exceptional piece of filmmaking is the cinematic equivalent to the ground-breaking original content that our company produces for its networks.” Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films said: “This is a major step forward for us, and we plan to work across AMC Networks in putting all our resources together to make this theatrical release into a significant cultural event. We will show the same passion in releasing this film as the team took behind producing it. We’re honored to be working with our friends Nathanael Karmitz and Charles Gillibert at MK2, Walter Salles, Rebecca Yeldham, Roman Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola.” Nathanael Karmitz (President-MK2) and Charles Gillibert (Producer-MK2) said: “ON THE ROAD changed the lives of many people, it changed the life of MK2 and it will also have that effect on AMC Networks and its labels’ IFC Films and Sundance Selects. We had a lot of interest from US distributors but thecombination of AMC Networks great promotional appeal with IFC Films and Sundance Selects’ experience in distribution is an innovative and ambitious way to bring ON THE ROAD great success in the US. We were also very touched by the passionate approach of Josh Sapan and Jonathan Sehring and by the enthusiasm of their team.” This marks the fourth time that the two companies have collaborated following Olivier Assayas’ SUMMER HOURS, Abbas Kiarostami’s CERTIFIED COPY, Gus Van Sant’s PARANOID PARK and Assayas’ upcoming SOMETHING IN THE AIR. ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner, and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Together, Sal and Dean travel cross-country in a quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them, in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” — the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women — Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), and Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each adding meaning to their desire for a new way of life. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Walter Salles is credited with helping Brazilian cinema return to international prominence in the late 1990s. His credits include THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES about the life of young Enresto Guevara who later became known as Che. The acclaimed film was a success at the box office and received Academy Award® nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jose Rivera and Best Song. Most recently he directed with Daniela Thomas the film LINHA DE PASSE, which won Sandra Corveloni the Best Actress at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. ###

‘Snow White And The Huntsman’: Charlize Theron Vs. Her Costume

‘The costumes were more damaging than the actual fight sequences,’ actress says during ‘MTV First,’ tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Studios Of all the things to be psyched to see in Kristen Stewart’s upcoming action adventure “Snow White and the Huntsman,” we are most enthused about the A-list girl-on-girl action that is Stewart’s Snow White vs. Charlize Theron ‘s Evil Queen Ravenna. With just a few more hours to wait until “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman,” starting tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV, here’s a little sneak peek of Theron talking about those highly anticipated fight sequences and the surprising culprit responsible for her on-set bruises. “The costumes were more damaging than the actual fight sequences,” Theron revealed. “I was way more bruised from my costume than I was from [fighting with Stewart]. Doing a fight sequence in your sweatpants is different than wearing an 80-pound steel thing. I don’t know, you were in leather,” she said to her co-star Chris Hemsworth. “It’s different. [Stewart] was in full metal, I was in full metal, just getting down, it took us four hours,” she said, speaking of the complex setting involved in filming her showdown with Stewart. The “Young Adult” actress has been reluctant to divulge any gory details about their climactic fight scenes, but she did offer up some praise for the “Twilight” star. “She was a good fight,” Theron said . The bitch brought it!” Speaking of those precarious costumes, the film’s Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood recently told us that despite the metal confinements, Theron knew how to work it in her dark and dangerous-looking wardrobe. “You can’t design for [Queen] Ravenna without having Charlize to work the costume. We had a great time,” Atwood said . “She wanted to have fun with it and not be too strapped into the clich
