Was Jennifer Lawrence Too ‘Curvy’ To Play Katniss In ‘Hunger Games’?

Fan groups respond to one critic’s suggestion that Lawrence’s ‘womanly figure makes a bad fit’ for Katniss. By Elizabeth Lancaster Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Fans flooded in droves into movie theaters this weekend to see “The Hunger Games.” In the wake of the highly anticipated release, much of the criticism surrounding the movie has been not about the young stars’ performances, but their appearances. Most recently there has been criticism of Jennifer Lawrence’s weight, with some sighting that as Katniss, a girl who grew up in a famine-stricken district of a dystopian society, she should have been thinner. New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis wrote , “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.” The statement is receiving much backlash, considering Lawrence is now a certified movie star that countless young women look up to. Putting aside the negative body-image issues the comment suggests, one wonders whether Dargis is accurate in her assessment of the actress/character disparity? MTV News asked expert “Hunger Games” fans to weigh in. Most had the same message: They loved what Lawrence brought to her character and that the scrutiny is misguided. “Katniss may not have been as thin or small in stature as depicted in the book, but it’s not unfathomable that her hunting prowess would have allowed her to have some meat on her bones,” TheHob.org’s Gabby Vittoria responded. She went on to point out that “Peeta wasn’t tall in the movie; Clove wasn’t big and brawny; Katniss wasn’t smaller than most of the Tributes. These physical changes certainly didn’t take away from the story and messages in the movie. Besides, for me, Jennifer’s acting and the quality of the film makes her weight a non-issue.” Many fans not only disagreed with the film critic but were affronted by these reviews of Lawrence. “I’m offended by this critique on so many levels, and honestly, I was shocked that it was ever an issue and that a professional critic would bring it up in the film’s review,” Sara Gundell from the Hunger Games Examiner fan site stated. This backlash about Lawrence’s weight comes in the wake of the questioning of Rue’s race in the film. The pre-teen is played by Amandla Stenberg, who is African American. In recent days her casting was the subject of racially fueled criticism by a handful of moviegoers who have suffered their own backlash. Justin Bieber Channels Justin Timberlake On ‘Boyfriend’

Lead Believe single dropped at midnight on Monday. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Tween dream swagger is all over Justin Bieber ‘s lead Believe single, “Boyfriend.” Taking several cues from Justin Timberlake’s early post-‘NSYNC work, the track amps up Bieber’s credibility as a teen idol and remixes it with the type of production work longtime pop music fans can appreciate. Lyrically, it sounds a bit silly at times (like when Bieber proposes he and his girl eat fondue by the fire), but Bieber’s delivery of the lines proves that at 18, he’s willing to take the steps to progress forward in the world of pop. Sometimes it seems a little too similar to the way the other Justin delivers lines, but “Boyfriend,” co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, is light-years beyond the sugary sweet “Baby.” The song opens pretty sparsely, with just a thumping beat, a “woo” noise and Bieber’s sing-songy rap, before a guitar comes in as Bieber makes his plea to win a girl over. The chorus will have girls dancing around thanks to its bumping beat and chugging R&B-influenced instrumentation. He sings, “I could be a gentleman/ Everything you want/ If I was your boyfriend/ I’d never let you go/ I’d never let you go,” before rapping, “Tell me what you like.” Bieber uses some form of the word “swag” no fewer than four times on the track, including the somewhat perplexing line, “Swag, swag, swag on you.” But regardless of what Bieber detractors might have to say, his Beliebers, who have aged right along with their idol, will appreciate his more grown-up sound on the record. The song officially dropped at midnight on Monday. Believe will be released later this year. As for the video, his manager, Scooter Braun, tweeted that it’s already in the works. ‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence: What’s Next?

A horror movie, two Bradley Cooper films and a return to Katniss Everdeen are all in the works. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence at the “Hunger Games” premiere Photo: Getty Images For those of you who rushed out to the theater to see Jennifer Lawrence and company in this weekend’s box-office blockbuster “The Hunger Games,” how good was Lawrence as Katniss? If you were as delighted and moved by Lawrence’s performance as we were, you’re probably wondering what the Oscar nominee will be up to next. Lucky for you, we have a few answers! Here’s a little rundown of what to expect from Lawrence and where to see more of this talented, charming and all-around likable leading lady. (Side note: Before she jumps right into another project, we hope Lawrence takes a vacation of some sort and gets a little rest and relaxation after her extensive, worldwide promotional tour for “Games.” We loved seeing the cast at so many events and so dressed up, but she has to be exhausted!) Anyway, we have to wait until fall until we get another Lawrence film. The first is the horror/thriller “House at the End of the Street,” co-starring Elisabeth Shue. In the film, Lawrence and Shue play a mother/daughter duo who get wrapped up in the mystery of a murder in a small town. Shortly after the September 21 release of “House at the End of the Street,” fans will see a very brief appearance by Lawrence in “Devil You Know,” playing the younger version of Rosamund Pike’s character Zoe. In November, we’ll see Lawrence in “The Silver Linings Playbook,” the first of two films co-starring Bradley Cooper . “Silver Linings” revolves around a man who tries to put his life back together after spending years in a mental institution. “I just wrapped a movie called ‘The Silver Linings Playbook,’ ” Lawrence told MTV News recently. “And then I’m going to go shoot another Bradley Cooper movie. It’s not a Bradley Cooper movie — Bradley Cooper’s in the movie — it’s a Jennifer Lawrence movie with Bradley in it,” she joked. “Bradley Cooper and I are going to come out with a Jennifer Lawrence/ Bradley Cooper box set.” Their second film together is “Serena,” about a Depression-era couple who face personal complications when they learn that Lawrence’s character cannot bear children, which has a negative impact on the future of their lumber company. Fun fact about “Serena”: Lawrence’s role was originally intended for Angelina Jolie. “I’m not at the status where I have her roles. I have her leftovers, let’s be clear,” she joked of taking over for Jolie. “She left it for me. I have her garbage. No, that’s a wonderful place to be. I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage. I’ve made it.” Shooting on “Serena” has yet to start. After her work on “Serena,” we’re all hoping Lawrence will be back playing Katniss for “Catching Fire” or getting painted to play Mystique in the yet-to-be-announced sequel to “X-Men: First Class.” Because “Fire” has a November 22, 2013, release date already locked in place, we’re betting Lawrence will be back wielding a bow and arrow before she’s spending countless hours in the makeup chair to “get painted again” for “X-Men.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jennifer Lawrence Shitty Fucking See Through of the Day

Jennifer Lawrence, although really not hot or interesting….is about to blow the fuck up with this hunger games bullshit…..it is supposed to be opening in 20,000 theaters, which is a record for Lionsgate….who cares about that right…what you need to care about is that although this average looking Lawrence decided this was her big break, her chance to really matter, where she otherwise probably never really would, at least not on this scale….means that her loss of privacy and sudden fame where everyone wants more of her…won’t require shitty publicity stunts that fuel the site….like bikinis, hacked phones, self shot nudes and sex tapes….She’s pretty much gonna remain boring, clothed, and riding her fame the next 5 years…. So this see through may be the most you see of her until she decides to go back to her Oscar nominated roots, and try to re-invent herself as an artist by getting naked…even though acting isn’t an art but don’t tell a self righteous actor that or they’ll have a hissy fit…..and when that doesn’t work out we’ll start seeing sex tapes, and nudes….that could take 20 years….and I probably won’t be alive….and either will you cuz the world is gonna blow up – so take in this shitty see through, even if it isn’t hot..cuz she isn’t hot….but she’s about to be…thanks to big budgets, marketing, and well the idiots who fall into their trap and believe what they are told…even on basic shit like whether a bitch is hot or not…. ‘Hunger Games’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

It’s been a long road to Panem; MTV News takes a trip down memory lane as the adaptation hits the big screen! By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Happy “Hunger Games” release day! What a long, bleak and dystopian road it has been so far. We’ve been waiting for this day so long and with so much hope and hype that it feels like we’ve been through the Reaping ourselves. To celebrate this momentous occasion, we have compiled a cheat sheet of everything you need to know about the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ beloved best-selling novel. The Prologue Back in spring 2009, just several months after the book’s well-received publication , Lionsgate won a bidding war for the rights to translate the gripping tale from page to screen. The next big question was, of course, who would be chosen to portray the impoverished “girl on fire” fighting for survival in a seemingly unjustly ruled society? The Reaping The highly publicized search for the perfect Katniss Everdeen featured a healthy list of young A-list actresses vying for the role, including Chloe Grace Moretz, Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld, all of whom were admitted fans . Finally, in May of last year, the suspense ended with the announcement that “Winter’s Bone” star and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence had won the role. The rest of the “Games” puzzle pieces fell quickly in place, with “Pleasantville” helmer Gary Ross in the director’s chair , who reportedly beat out David Slade (“Eclipse”) and Sam Mendes (“Revolutionary Road”), and rising stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson claiming the roles of Katniss’ best friend Gale Hawthorne and the dependable “boy with the bread” Peeta Mallark . Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Wes Bentley would all later join the cast in the film’s key supporting roles of escort Effie Trinket , mentor Haymitch Abernathy, District 12 stylist Cinna and Seneca Crane, respectively. The Production Games Once the film’s March 23, 2012 release date was announced, production shifted into high gear in the forests of North Carolina. In spring 2011, we got our official first look at Lawrence in character, followed thereafter by glimpses of Hutcherson and Hemsworth . And although the matter of making the film was serious business, we later discovered that the castmembers had lots of fun on set, particularly Hutcherson, who told us the humorous tale of his successful, but sneaky, practical joke he played on Lawrence . After that, we were very happy to treat fans to MTV’s exclusive first look at footage of Katniss in action during the VMAs . The Fan Fervor and Whirlwind Promotional Tour Once production wrapped, we did our best to track down the stars for their thoughts about their roles and the filmmaking process. Lawrence told us all about her training regimen and admitted that all her hours spent with an archery coach were “really fun.” Hutcherson shared his perspective on the intense audition process and how he felt he is “so right” for the role . These little teases and costume reveals were enough to tide us over until we scored multiple sit-down interviews with the castmembers and the mall tours began, all leading up to the star-studded Hollywood premiere , for which we provided in-depth coverage via our live stream . With early ticket sales breaking records and box-office predictions very high , all that’s left to do is wait and watch as the engrossing story of Katniss and company continues to catch fire. Jennifer Lawrence Lets Her Breasts Fall Out

I’m not really sure what the deal is with this Hunger Games business, I think it’s a book and now movie for teenage girls, but I know some quality cleavage when I see it. Here’s Jennifer Lawrence dropping some perky boobage at a book signing for the thing. I find it a little odd that she’s signing copies of a book she didn’t write. Shouldn’t she be signing DVD’s or movie posters or something? I guess with this much breasts hanging out she can sign whatever the hell she wants.

Jennifer Lawrence Is ‘Crazy’ Good In ‘Hunger Games’

‘It’s amazing, honestly, to watch her effortlessly flip back and forth,’ Josh Hutcherson tells MTV News of castmate’s performance as Katniss. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News Although there were a few skeptics out there who questioned the casting of Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games,” most of that chatter died down when Lionsgate started releasing photos and clips of the Oscar nominee in action as Katniss Everdeen. Now, as we inch closer and closer toward the release date of the highly anticipated film, Lawrence’s castmates have been saying how she embodies the spirit of the beloved and critically acclaimed protagonist created by author Suzanne Collins. Lawrence’s co-star and real-life friend Josh Hutcherson recently told MTV News that despite being a very different person from Katniss, the actress’ ability to quickly turn the character on and off was startling. “She is literally 180 degrees different from Katniss,” Hutcherson said. “It’s amazing, honestly, to watch her effortlessly flip back and forth, because she’s very fun, very hilarious, and to watch her on ‘Action!’ go boom, right into the character is kind of impressive, so much so that she’s talking and being Jennifer up until they’re rolling sound and when they say ‘Action!’ boom, [she goes] right into character.” Hutcherson said Lawrence’s abilities are so good they’re unsettling. “That’s what crazy people do. Crazy people change who they are as a person just like that, so she’s a crazy person,” he joked. We asked Hutcherson to clarify that statement, just to be sure that he does indeed think Lawrence is crazy. “100 percent,” he said with a smile, still joking. “I’ve said that for a long time.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jennifer Lawrence Preparing Her ‘Bradley Cooper Box Set’

‘I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage,’ ‘Hunger Games’ star jokes to MTV News about replacing the actress in Cooper’s next flick. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence has admitted she’s not sure when she’ll be on set for the next film in the franchise, “Catching Fire,” but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have plenty of projects to keep her busy until then. “I just wrapped a movie called ‘The Silver Linings Playbook,’ and that’ll be out at some point, I don’t know when,” Lawrence told MTV News recently. “And then I’m going to go shoot another Bradley Cooper movie. It’s not a Bradley Cooper movie — Bradley Cooper’s in the movie — it’s a Jennifer Lawrence movie with Bradley in it,” she joked. “Bradley Cooper and I are going to come out with a Jennifer Lawrence/ Bradley Cooper box set.” That box set, should it ever get made, would focus on two very different films starring Lawrence and Cooper: “Silver Linings,” due in November, revolves around a man who tries to put his life back together after spending years in a mental institution, while “Serena” is about a Depression-era couple who face personal complications when they learn the wife cannot bear children, possibly destroying the future of their lumber company. Lawrence will play Cooper’s wife in “Serena,” a part originally intended for Angelina Jolie. “I’m not at the status where I have her roles. I have her leftovers, let’s be clear,” she joked of Jolie. “She left it for me. I have her garbage. No, that’s a wonderful place to be. I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage. I’ve made it.” Shooting on “Serena” has yet to start. Although Lawrence has several films on her production docket, she wouldn’t rule out getting back into the “X-Men” mindset as Mystique if given the chance. “I would love to do another one. I’m hearing the same as everyone else, there’s mumblings,” she said of her “First Class” role. “I can’t wait to get painted again.” If fans can’t wait that long to see Lawrence’s on the big screen, they can head to theaters on March 23 when the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” hits theaters. Jennifer Lawrence Compares Katniss Everdeen to… Kim Kardashian?!?

On March 23, Jennifer Lawrence will bring one of the most intriguing, tough-minded, well-written young heroines to the big screen in The Hunger Games . So you can imagine our surprise when the actress, in a featured interview with this month’s Parade , compared Katniss Everdeen to one of the least interesting, most wooden and rarely-dressed individuals out there, Kim Kardashian . Why do you think so many people relate to the books , the magazine asked the rising star? Replied Lawrence: “I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that’s a tragedy for anyone. But they’re using it for entertainment, and we’re watching it. The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other’s pain.” Hear that, people?!? Continue to tune in to E! every week on Sunday nights and we’ll soon be sending our teenagers out to kill each other all in the name of sport! Just something to consider. Exclusive ‘Hunger Games’ Clip: Peeta’s Interview With Caesar

Don’t miss the ‘Hunger Games’ red-carpet premiere tonight at 8:30, streaming live from MTV News! By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate As the countdown to “The Hunger Games” grows shorter and shorter, fans have been craving as much of the tributes as they can possibly get. Luckily, we have a brand-new exclusive clip from the upcoming movie. Soon after they are chosen for the games, the tributes from District 12, Katniss ( Jennifer Lawrence ) and Peeta ( Josh Hutcherson ), go through the public relations wringer, including a broadcast interview with the eccentric TV personality Caesar Flickerman, played by a very blue-haired Stanley Tucci . In this exclusive clip, Peeta sits down to answer a few personal questions from Caesar before heading into the arena. Similarly, the cast and crew of “The Hunger Games” will have to face the judgments of the diehard fans of the book, when the film finally comes out on March 23. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz spoke with Lawrence about her reaction to seeing the finished film and how fans have treated her during the lead-up. “It was really good. It didn’t surprise me, which was good. During filming, I really liked everything what I was seeing. I liked everything that Gary was doing. Then I saw it, and it was all there,” Lawrence said. “It’s always hard for me watching because I think I am a horrible troll and I’ll never work again. Overall, I think everybody else in the movie is fantastic, and I think the film itself is really good.” Life has changed significantly for Lawrence since scoring the highly coveted role, not for the better in some cases. “I get photographers hiding in my bushes,” she said. “We’re way past autographs. We’re into being stalked and followed.” Other than the paparazzi, the response has been generally more positive for Lawrence. “Everyone’s been really nice fortunately. I mean, the movie’s not out yet, so we’ll see.” MTV News goes live from the “Hunger Games” red-carpet premiere tonight! Tune into our live stream from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. ET as Josh Horowitz catches up with the stars and asks fans’ burning questions! Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Jennifer Lawrence
