Time Mag’s Duffy: ‘Liberal Part of Obama Presidency Probably Over’

Time magazine's Michael Duffy said this weekend that the liberal part of Barack Obama's presidency is probably over. Maybe more surprising, no one on the syndicated “Chris Matthews Show” – including the host – disagreed with him (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Matthews: Has GOP Sounded Dog Whistle Declaring Open Season On Sarah Palin?

It appears Republicans need to be read their conservative Miranda rights: anything negative you say about Sarah Palin can and will be used against her by the liberal media. Such was made infinitely clear on Monday's “Hardball” when the host first teased, “Has someone sounded the dog whistle,” and later opened a segment, “Are Republicans putting out the word that it's time to stop Sarah Palin?” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Art Rant: The Washington Post Rails Against ‘Small-Minded Intolerance’ of Cantor, Boehner

Liberal newspapers may claim that taxpayer-funded art galleries should take “public sensitivities” into account, but in reality, they don’t want members of Congress actually representing the insulted public by speaking out against anti-Christian exhibits. Friday’s Washington Post led their editorial page with the headline “The censors arrive: Do Republicans really want to ride into power with a burst of small-minded intolerance? ” That’s funny: Christians might find the “small-minded intolerance” coming from artists who think that modern-day Christianity is an oppressive, Jesus-betraying force – as represented by ants crawling all over Jesus on a crucifix. Here’s the key passage: Public sensibilities must be taken into account when taxpayer funds are in play, but the use of public dollars does not give lawmakers the right to micromanage or censor displays. Nor should the occasional dust-up be justification for threatened retribution against these valuable national assets. We hope Mr. Cantor's threats prompt many additional Washingtonians to visit the exhibit and judge for themselves. read more

On PBS, Tavis Smiley Asks Dick Durbin and Gary Hart About Too Much GOP Partisanship, Too Little ‘Stimulus’

PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley interviewed two Democrats on Wednesday, and he asked both if the $878 billion “stimulus” package was “not robust enough,” and asked if the nation should really be fixating on the deficit, instead of more so-called “stimulus.” Smiley also told former Sen. Gary Hart that partisanship and gridlock was the worst

Lamenting Tenth Anniversary of Bush vs. Gore, CNN’s Toobin Mangles Media Recount Reality

From his perch at the liberal magazine The New Yorker on Tuesday, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin recycled his lament that the Bush-Gore 2000 chad fight should have lasted several more months. (Toobin's 2001 book Too Close to Call also carried Al Gore's water.) Toobin fights against the popular notion that liberals should get over 2000, for it revealed conservative judicial activism, most appalling to Toobin when “equal protection” is applied to white males, as if they're entitled to it. But Toobin simply gets it wrong in finding media recounts were not conclusive: Bush v. Gore would resonate, in any case, because the Court prevented Florida from determining, as best it could, whether Gore or Bush really won. (Recounts of the ballots by media organizations produced ambiguous results; they suggest that Gore would have won a full statewide recount and Bush would have won the limited recount initially sought by the Gore forces.) Wrong. As Brent Baker reminded readers in 2008 , both media recounts, including a statewide recount of undervotes, concluded the Court did not decide the election: read more

Media Far from Neutral on Swiss Voters Approving Deportation Measure for Violent Criminals

The liberal media are generally fond of touting European countries for their liberal domestic policies, chastising America by comparison for being too conservative. But when the electorate of such a country votes to institute a strong conservative policy over the objections of its political elite, the media's fascination with the European everyman evaporates. Take Sunday's vote by Swiss citizens to institute a referendum requiring foreigners convicted of serious crimes to be expelled from the country after serving out their sentences. Fifty-three percent of voters approved the bill, dismissing the objections of their professional political class who urged “no” votes. Covering the story, the Christian Science Monitor decried the move as “the latest example of a sweeping set of popular antiforeigner measures around Europe”: read more

WaPo’s David Broder Declares the Voters’ Will in 2010 Was Best Symbolized by…Lisa Murkowski

Liberal journalists are forever trying to dismiss the idea that when conservative candidates win, the voters who sent them to Washington sent them for conservative goals — to restrain relentless government growth. In Thursday's Washington Post, columnist David Broder declared, in the face of all evidence, that the defining campaign of 2010 was….the egocentric write-in campaign of moderate Republican Lisa Murkowski in Alaska. It was not the year of the Tea Party, or repealing ObamaCare. It was the year that the voters said they wanted non-ideological bipartisanship. He quoted her interview with the PBS NewsHour:

Ed Schultz: Palin is Racist for Criticizing the Obamas’ Connection to Rev. Wright

After spending much of his week accusing Rush Limbaugh of racism, Ed Schultz on Friday made the same absurd claim about former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Following in the footsteps of others on his network as well as the liberal blogosphere, the MSNBCer said it was racist for Palin to refer to comments Michelle Obama made in 2008 about never having been proud of her country before her husband started winning primaries. It was also racist of Palin to mention in her book the Obamas' connection to Rev. Jeremiah Wright (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

NPR Invites Ted Koppel to Respond to Olbermann…But Utterly Excludes Bill O’Reilly

National Public Radio can't even host a discussion about objectivity in journalism without slanting it to the left. On Tuesday's Talk to the Nation , they invited on former ABC anchor Ted Koppel to discuss his Washington Post op-ed slamming cable news. Host Neal Conan played a large audio chunk of Keith Olbermann running down Koppel on Monday night's Countdown for “worshipping before the false god of utter objectivity” and failing to stop the war in Iraq. NPR offered 294 haughty words of Krazy Keith. But Koppel slammed Fox News as well as MSNBC. Why would NPR fail to air the views of Fox News? The Fox-hatred continues. All NPR listeners got was an insular debate between Old Liberal Media and New Leftist Media. Bill O'Reilly, in fact, also commented on Koppel on Monday night (with less aggression, and no suggestions that secular Koppel bowed before any god). Here's some of what NPR just couldn't bother to locate: read more

LA Times: Liberal Embrace of ‘Waiting for Superman’ Proves Conservatives Are Intolerant

The internet is abuzz with praise for the new documentary that points out the many faults of public education,  Waiting for Superman . With positive reviews from both the  Huffington Post  on the Left as well as the  New York Post   on the Right, it makes one wonder, how could this be? It appears that this film has single-handedly done what  President Obama  could not do to save his own life: bring the Left and Right together on a single issue. It is refreshing that the film’s director, Davis Guggenheim (who directed  An Inconvenient Truth ), is able to put politics aside to see the destructive nature of teachers unions. Guggenheim put his own kids through private school but realizes that not everyone can afford such a luxury. Here, he sets out to tackle the real problems that have long plagued public school systems: teachers unions. Though, he is  careful to say that he isn’t bashing unions  in general. Guggenheim sees that not everything has to be a political football, which is why we should applaud him for taking a bipartisan approach. However, some feel that the response to the film shows the true, negative colors of conservatives. Liberal Patrick Goldstein comments in the  Los Angeles Times : If you’re a documentary filmmaker, you’re happy to get rave reviews from any source, since you need all the good PR you can get. But I find it revealing, when it comes to the liberal vs. conservative partisan divide, that whenever Michael Moore releases a new documentary promoting a liberal cause, conservatives are quick to bash him for being a left-wing propagandist. But when Guggenheim makes a film offering wholehearted support for a conservative cause, liberal critics have written just as many glowing reviews as conservative ones. (The film has a sky-high 93 fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.) What does that tell you about who’s got the most open mind here? First of all, only looking at  Michael Moore  and Davis Guggenheim as leftists is a bit single minded (even though they are). Sure, they both have done their partisan films, but one is far worse than the other.  Big Hollywood ‘s editor-in-chief John Nolte has even gone as far as to  defend Moore  when he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors: Yes, Michael Moore is a liar, a shameless propagandist and an anti-American leftist of the highest order. But he’s also one helluva talented filmmaker and it would be wildly hypocritical for me to believe or argue that anyone should be blacklisted from AMPAS due to their political beliefs. And that’s the only reason I could possibly use to argue against this appointment. It doesn’t get any fairer than a conservative defending Moore because not doing so would support a blacklist mindset. Even still,  Moore  has dedicated his career to leftist causes.  Look at his films:  Bowling for Columbine  (a good film that ends up ruining itself with a weak plea for gun control),  Fahrenheit 9/11 (a horribly partisan and dishonest portrayal of Bush enabling conspiracy theorists), and  Sicko  (a disgusting defense of socialism). Everything Moore directs (and writes and says) is to further a far Left agenda. Therefore, he is so painfully predictable, which is why it is so easy for the Right to go after him. On the other hand, Guggenheim has directed the paranoid global warming holy film  An Inconvenient Truth  as well as a short for the 2008 Obama campaign. Yet Guggenheim differs from Moore in that he has also done a lot more work outside of political documentaries. If you look at his profile from imdb.com  you will see he has directed episodes of  Deadwood ,  Numbers ,  Alias,  and even the conservative loved  24 , a show Moore wouldn’t touch in fear of losing his leftist cred. Sure,  An Inconvenient Truth  is praised by leftists and hated by conservatives (generally speaking), but by creating a wide variety of content, Guggenheim gives an opportunity for both conservatives and liberals to appreciate his work. So it isn’t fair to assert that liberals are better than conservatives because critics on the Left show balls by embracing a leftist filmmaker who makes a conservative argument (when the Right won’t respect Moore). The day that Moore steps outside of his self-loathing, socialist-loving fog bubble is when conservatives can respect him. Anyone who is honest about their politics will find good and bad on both sides. Guggenheim has apparently done this with  Waiting for Superman . Until Moore decides to transform some of his propaganda films into useful documentaries, we will continue to wait, but I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath. Crossposted at Big Hollywood
