If you're familiar with Chet Haze, it's probably because social media has basically reduced the rapper son of Tom Hanks to a living meme. Obviously, it's easy to poke fun at the white, privileged offspring of one of America's most celebrated nice-guy actors when the guy chooses to speak with an “urban” accent and previously made the unfortunate decision to pepper his speech with n-bombs. But, it's also easy to forget that Chet is a human being who seems to be making an effort to change himself for the better. After struggling with substance abuse, Chet is sober now; he's carved out a decent acting career for himself, with a recurring part on the Showtime series Shameless , and is his fans learned yesterday, Haze has been a father for quite some time. Chet made the revelation in an Instagram video posted yesterday. He began with an apology for his absence from the 'Gram: “I've been figuring out my life, which is what we're all doing, and social media is all bullsh-t,” Chet tells the camera. “I want to share something today because it's about to be shared anyway in the press, which is the fact that I have a daughter,” he went on to say. “it hasn't been easy making all my mistakes in public. But I'm figuring it out.” “She’s not something to be posted,” he explained. “She’s something that I love, that’s changed my life but the fact is she’s about to be shared with everybody so I wanted you to hear it from me.” Haze checked into rehab last year, and he credits his daughter with his decision to turn his life around: “She's the reason why I turned my life around and got sober,” he says. “I've been sober — for over a year and a half — from everything.” No word on how old the girl is, but our very belated congrats go out to Chet on becoming a dad, as well as to Tom on the new granddaughter!
Common Talks 13th , Social Activism Common is really living up to his original rap name “Common Sense” these days. The rapper’s activism anthem “Letter to the Free” is the end-title track on 13th and has already been nominated for a 2016 Critics’ Choice Documentary Award for “Best Song in a Documentary.” The song’s lyrics tackle America’s racial divide and reflect the film’s focus on the prison system as a new form of slavery in America. It’s also featured on Common’s own latest album, “Black America Again.” Take a listen: We caught up with Common to chat about the single, his invovlement with the project, and how his affiliation with Ava Duvernay movies have shaped his musical direction and activism… What made you want to become involved with 13th in the way that you have? 13th hit me in a way…it was like I know some of this, I didn’t know about this ALEC stuff, I didn’t even know the 13th amendment said that — I’ll be honest — I didn’t even realize that the 13th amendment said that if you’re a “criminal,” you can [legally] be a slave. So all that information, I’m still continuing to learn. It’s been an awakening for the country. This is part of American history and the same way we teach our kids about the people who came to revolutionize this country, we need to teach them about slavery too. We need to teach them about slavery and how that ties into where we are now. If they can see that, they would be able to put two and two together and start functioning differently. Your name has become more and more synonymous with “wokeness” in a sense since your involvement in Selma a few years back. How do you feel that movie experience prepared you for projects like 13th and even placing some of the messages you have in your latest album? Well, Selma was definitely one of the moments that changed my life forever. One of the greatest experiences of my life. One of the reasons is being introduced to the Civil Rights Movement in another way. It’s more than just researching and reading it in textbooks. You’re talking to people. Ambassador Andrew Young came and had a talk the first day of our rehearsal and said “What are you willing to die for? Live for that.” He said that was the whole mentality of the people of the Civil Rights movement. “We’re willing to die for freedom, so we’re going to live for freedom. We’re dedicating each day toward that.” One of the practical things I was able to connect with was the fact that each and every person that was a part of that movement, each day they contributed something towards fighting for that freedom. They dedicated their lives to saying “okay, some part of my day will be dedicated towards that.” I felt like, I have been doing things and putting my spirit and energy into wanting to see change, but I had to do more. I had to contribute my days into being more active and more present — not only in the music. So then, aside from the music, what ways did you begin pursuing to be more active? That made me think about things, and question how can I use my creativity not only towards the art that I’m doing that is socio-political work, but how can I use my mind towards these communities. So that made me start going into communities and start to listen and made me more political than I had ever been. Before I would think — “Okay, I need to vote for the president.” And “I’ll vote for this person I know about.” But now, I need to know. If I have a problem with police injustice and police killing Black people, I need to know what things I can do policy-wise to help change things. Who is the person that selects the police chief? Who is the person that sets up the training for the policemen in this state and that state? Not that I’m going to know everything, but even if it’s connecting with groups that do know, so that I can get that information and see how I can contribute my name, celebrity, whatever access I have, and creativity towards that change. What action has 13th pushed you to take? With this movie, I’ll put it this way: If I’m going to talk it and rap it, I’ll have to be it. So I will be at somebody’s prison — just building with brothers and sisters about getting out and what life will be like getting out and trying to provide help in that way. I even realized this morning from Kim Fox, the State’s Attorney of Chicago — she comes from Cabrini-Green in Chicago so she’s for the people, she comes from it — she says one of the biggest issues is, they don’t assist people when they’re about to get out of jail, so when they come out, they’re shocked. And it’s hard to get jobs, hard to get housing, you can’t vote in certain places, so then you feel second-class, and then you end up going back to that same cycle. So, if someone has been convicted of a crime, when they’re about to get out, when do we start training them to work on that? I want to help with figuring that out. Nice! Not a big fan. “I was in a dark place then and finally moved on,” Javi tweeted, noting, “and me and her are doing really well now so it’ll be rough.” At the reunion show, which has already taped even thought he premiere hasn’t aired, Kail revealed that she, too, is dating someone. The movie is supposed to have a PG rating, so it wouldn’t have any of Amy’s usual raunchiness , but she is said to be doing a rewrite of the current script. As for the basic plot, it will be acknowledged that Amy doesn’t have the classic unrealistic Barbie proportions. Remember, Mattel recently released Barbies that come in more varied, more realistic body types? Yeah, you can now buy Curvy Barbies, Petite Barbies, and Tall Barbies. The movie will play on that. Amy’s Barbie character lives in Barbieland, where all the different Barbies live. You know, Dentist Barbie, Babysitter Barbie, Dog Walker Barbie, Gymnastics Barbie … But her version of Barbie will get banished from Barbieland because she doesn’t quite fit the perfect Barbie mold. A newly-surfaced interview with Bernardo Bertolucci has revealed a horrifying confession. According to the director, he and Marlo Brando conspired in 1972 to shoot a scene in the film Last Tango in Paris that depicted the actor actually raping co-star Maria Schneider with a stick of butter. Brando was 48 at the time of the movie and Schneider was 19, with the later saying herself back in 2007 that the famous scene was actually a sexual violation. “I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci,” she wrote in an essay for The Daily Mail. “After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or [apologize]. Thankfully, there was just one take.” Schneider passed away in 2011. Meanwhile, in a Q&A filmed at La Cinémathèque française in Paris, Bertolucci confessed three years ago that he and Brando came up with the idea to use a stick of butter to rape Schneider on camera the morning of the shoot. Excerpts from this interview only just came to light this week. “The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting,” the director explains in this interview. “We were having, with Marlon, breakfast on the floor of the flat where I was shooting. There was a baguette, there was butter and we looked at each other and, without saying anything, we knew what we wanted.” (In the horrifying scene, which earned Schneider critical appeal from those who presumed for years that she was acting, Brando uses the stick of butter as sexual lubricant.) One of the most respected filmmakers of his generation, Bertolucci went on to acknowledge that he “had been, in a way, horrible to Maria because I didn’t tell her what was going on.” So why did he go forward with this despicable idea? “[I] wanted her reaction as a girl, not as an actress,” the director said. “I wanted her to react humiliated.” Soon after Last Tango in Paris was released, movie critic Roger Ebert gushed over Schneider as an actress who “doesn’t seem to act her role so much as to exude it.” We now know why. How awful. As news of this declaration by Bertolucci went viral, stars in Hollywood reacted on social media with shock and horror. “To all the people that love this film, you’re watching a 19 year old get raped by a 48 year old man,” Jessica Chastain Tweeted. “The director planned her attack. I feel sick.” Michael Cudlitz, late of The Walking Dead , was more direct than anyone: “Special place in hell for these two scumbags and everyone on the crew that watched and did nothing. F-CK YOU.” Bertolucci and Schneider didn’t stay in contact once the film was released. “After the movie, we really didn’t see each other because she was hating me,” Bertolucci said. The director concluded that he felt a bit “guilty” about the whole thing, but not to the point where he regretted the decision. “To obtain something I think you have to be completely free,” Bertolucci said. “I didn’t want Maria to act her humiliation her rage, I wanted her to Maria to feel, not to act, the rage and humiliation.
