Band postpones shows in Italy, Germany and Switzerland after a stage collapse killed its drum tech and destroyed some of its light show and equipment. By Gil Kaufman Radiohead’s Thom Yorke Photo: Radiohead have been forced to postpone a string of seven European tour dates in the continuing fallout from a June 17 stage collapse at Toronto’s Downsview Park that took the life of their drum tech, Scott Johnson. “As you will probably have heard the roof over the stage collapsed at our show in Toronto killing crew member Scott Johnson and injuring three other crew members,” read a statement from the band released on Thursday (June 21). “The collapse also destroyed the light show – this show was unique and will take many weeks to replace. The collapse also caused serious damage to our backline, some elements of which are decades old and therefore hard to replace.” In addition to grieving for their friend and those injured in the accident, the band has been forced to deal with “many practical considerations” that have caused them to postpone a series of shows. Among those affected is a June 30 date at the Hippodrome Capanelle in Rome, as well as six other European dates in Italy, Germany and Switzerland that run through July 9. The band said they are going to try to reschedule the show, with the goal of naming new dates for them on June 27. The current plan is to start playing live again on July 10 at Les Arenes in Nimes, France. Inspectors from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour have been inspecting the wreckage to determine the cause of the collapse but have yet to release their findings. Related Artists Radiohead
Perry’s fairy-tale clip closes the book on her Teenage Dream story and finds her living happily ever after. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “Wide Awake” Photo: Katy Perry certainly isn’t the first artist to get all Lewis Carroll-ian with a video — Tom Petty’s iconic “Don’t Come Around Here No More” certainly springs to mind — though, in some ways, her brand-new “Wide Awake” clip (which borrows from Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass” book) does manage to cover new territory — namely by transforming the fantasy trope into a bit of an autobiography. It makes sense. After all, it’s not exactly a stretch to call the past two years of her life — which began with the release of her Teenage Dream album in summer 2010 and concludes with her upcoming “Part of Me” 3-D film — surreal. She’s one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, gone through a very public divorce, and become the rather unwilling target of the tabloids — and in some way, you get the feeling she’d like nothing more than to return to simpler times (singles sales intact, obvs). And all those things show up, in one form or another, in “Wide Awake,” which begins at the very end of her “California Gurls” music video shoot and takes her literally through the looking glass to a world that is basically as fantastical as her actual existence. She is trapped inside a labyrinth. She discovers her lost innocence in the form of a young girl. She is hounded by hellish paparazzi. She finds her Prince Charming, who tellingly crosses his fingers behind his back before going in for a kiss. And even more tellingly, Perry reaches back and decks him. In short, you don’t exactly need an advanced degree in film theory to realize that the video is one long symbolic ride through her voyage to superstardom (except for the two hospital attendants/minotaurs; I’m not sure what they represent). The squeeze of fame, the rose-colored nostalgia, the invasions of privacy and the betrayals of trust: It’s all here and all ready for the armchair analysts. Of course, Perry has made it very clear that this new video is the final chapter of the fairy tale that was her Teenage Dream years. That she doesn’t seem to be entirely happy with all of it is about as telling as her socking Prince Charming — after all, no one ever said fame was easy, or the ride to the top wouldn’t be a bumpy one. And, at their very core, most fairy tales are actually pretty terrifying things. But with “Wide Awake,” Perry lets it be known that she’s made it through unscathed and on top of the world. And if that’s not a happy ending, well, then I don’t know what is. What did you think of Katy’s latest video? Let us know in the comments! Esteemed video director Chris Robinson will also join Sway live Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Lil Scrappy Photo: Lil Scrappy is back, and in a major way. The Dirty South MC will star will VH1’s new reality series “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” premiering Monday (June 18); will release his new album, The Grustle , on June 26; and will make his first “RapFix Live” appearance on Wednesday. It was 2006 when Scrappy dropped his debut album, Bred 2 Die Born 2 Live . With both Lil Jon and 50 Cent serving as executive producers, the ATL MC had the best of both worlds: Jon’s crunk sound and Fif’s gangster bravado. Scrappy continued to release mixtape material independently on the street, but his long-awaited The Grustle never saw the light of day — that is, until now. The LP’s lead single, “Helicopter,” features 2 Chainz and Twista, and on June 26, Scrappy fans will finally get the album they’ve been asking for. They’ll also simultaneously get a glimpse into Scrappy’s romantic life on “Love & Hip Hop.” He’ll break it all down at 4 p.m. ET this Wednesday on MTV.com. Scrap isn’t the only ATL rapper who will grace the red couch this week: Newcomer Cash Out will also appear on “RapFix Live.” The young rapper’s current single, “Cashin’ Out,” has become a club staple and earned him a record deal with L.A. Reid over at Epic Records. To cap things off, we will welcome esteemed video director Chris Robinson (Nas’ “Daughters,” Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’ ” and Jay-Z’s “Change Clothes”) and take a look back at Hot 107.9 ‘s Birthday Bash all-star concert in Atlanta. Some were skeptical that Woody Allen would make an appearance at the opening night of the LA Film Festival , even with his latest Euro-whimsy To Rome With Love premiering in the kick-off slot Thursday night. But show up Woody did, with five of his starlets in tow — including Alison Pill, Greta Gerwig , and a dazzling Penelope Cruz — to debut his 43rd feature film with a few charmingly self-deprecating zingers. “I had a wonderful time making the picture in Rome,” Allen said, introducing his film to a packed theater at LA Live with a quip. “That doesn’t mean that you’ll enjoy it.” Allen continued, quietly demurring the palpable adoration of the opening night crowd, joined by Cruz, Pill, Gerwig, and Italian co-stars Alessandra Mastronardi and Simona Caparrini. “I had fun. I was there for three months eating pasta, working with beautiful actresses and scintillating leading men. It was great for me. But whether it came out or not, you have to be the judge. If you like it, I want you to tell your friends and pressure Sony, so they don’t put it in the Witness Protection Program.” [Sony Pictures Classics releases the film in select cities next week.] Allen’s Roman outing follows in the vein of his Oscar-nominated hit Midnight in Paris , exploring the spirit of the Eternal City through four light-hearted, if exhausting and scattered vignettes. In one, renowned architect Alec Baldwin visits his old Rome stomping grounds, running into Jesse Eisenberg’s 30 years-younger counterpart as he falls into an ill-advised affair. In another, a fiery hooker (Cruz) upends the life of a timid Italian newlywed. Roberto Benigni (“delightful, brilliant, sensational,” lauded Allen) shines in his own Fellini-esque tale of an average Roman businessman who becomes an overnight celebrity, enjoying — then bemoaning — the trappings of fame. And Allen stars himself, alongside Pill and a wonderfully acerbic Judy Davis, as a neurotic visiting American navigating culture clash with his Italian in-laws. To Rome may lack the pure magic and cohesion of Midnight in Paris , but it’s more fascinated with riffing on the fantasy that the Italian city inspires. (Critics were mixed following the film’s LA Film Fest premiere.) Among the themes turned over and over by Allen’s characters: Celebrity, desire, and the twin, or dueling, identities entrenched in the very fabric of the city — a place where the ruins of ancient civilization are an inescapable part of the modern landscape, a reminder of humanity’s impulse to reach for greatness, even at the risk of great failure. That hunger for life’s “what ifs?” is, the film argues, as essential as it is impossible to ignore. A starstruck woman ponders the extramarital affair that would make for a lifetime of stories; a mortician seizes the chance at operatic greatness, even under the silliest of circumstances. In the film’s most Allenesque pairing, Baldwin’s knowing John peppers Eisenberg’s Jack with the advice he knows he won’t heed, because he didn’t take it himself as a young man. Their double dose of relentless, self-aware commentary — about life, love, and the wrong choices (and ill-advised love affairs) you just can’t help choosing — speaks to a filmmaker who is all too haunted by his past, yet content to come to terms with the naivete of his younger self. Given how baldly he confronts the funny business of art and celebrity in the film, from all sides — the fleeting pointlessness (and compulsive appeal) of being famous for famous’ sake in today’s reality TV culture, the eternal struggle to balance art and commerce, even the oiliness and pretension pervasive to Hollywood types alike, personified by Italian actor Antonio Albanese and with particular deftness by Ellen Page — Allen’s pre-screening sign-off remained softly humble. “Thank you very much for showing up tonight,” he said. “If you like the picture, I’m thrilled. If you hate it and think it was a waste of time coming, don’t let me know [pause] because I get depressed easily.” To Rome with Love opens on June 22. Read more from the LA Film Fest here . Wes Anderson ‘s nostalgic kid romance Moonrise Kingdom is on its way to wide release later this month (June 29), when even more folks will have the chance to fall in love with the tale of New England youngsters Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward). As a special treat, Focus Features has released an utterly charming supplemental short — introduced by Bob Balaban as the island of New Penzance’s narrator/cartographer and, as it turns out, local librarian — in which the six young adult fantasy books glimpsed in the film come to life via Hayward’s narration and some magical animation. In Moonrise , star-crossed tween lovers Sam and Suzy pact to run away together, sending the entire island into a tizzy. The soulmates’ plan for escape is as practical as it is impractical; they’ve packed camping gear and kitten food, but Suzy’s suitcase is filled with library books. And what books! Shelly and the Secret Universe , The Francine Odysseys , The Girl from Jupiter , Disappearance of the 6th Grade , The Light of Seven Matchsticks , The Return of Auntie Lorraine … Anderson commissioned different artists to design each novel, a small but potent detail that goes a long way in capturing that elusive sense of childhood wonderment, at least for this childhood sci-fi/fantasy book nerd.

Breezy captivates fans with hits as well as new tracks from his upcoming album, Fortune. By Miranda Johnson Chris Brown performs on NBC’s “Today” Photo: Jamie McCarthy/WireImage NEW YORK — On Friday morning (June 8), VA hit NY with full force as megastar Chris Brown graced the outdoor stage of the “Today” show summer concert series. The soulful singer enchanted fans as he performed hits as well as a new song, “Don’t Wake Me Up,” from his upcoming album, Fortune. Breezy belted out the songs to the ladies that filled Rockefeller Plaza, singing fan favorites like “Yeah 3X,” “Forever”‘ and “Turn Up The Music.” There was no shortage of energy as Team Breezy responded by screaming at the top of their lungs and yelling out the lyrics to every song. “I love you, Team Breezy!” Chris shouted several times, definitely feeling the love. The “Beautiful People” singer put on a performance to remember, effortlessly gliding across the light-filled stage. Between occasional bursts of smoke, his spirited dance team kept the audience on their feet. Brown recently dropped the video for his summer anthem “Till I Die.” The self-directed vid features Chris stirring up trouble in his 9-to-5, and then later linking up with Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean for a smoke fest. Snoop Dogg also makes a cameo in the clip, picking up his homeys in a yellow, old-school pimp-style convertible. The video wraps as the group reaches their destination: a foggy frat house filled with smoke in which marijuana enthusiasts Method Man and Redman make an appearance. Brown’s Fortune album is set to drop on July 3. What did you think of Chris’ “Today” show set? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Chris Brown
