9 Pro Tips for Landing That Action Star Gig from John Carter’s Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch is about to have a very big 2012. In addition to carrying Disney’s ambitious sci-fi adaptation John Carter as the titular Edgar Rice Burroughs hero, a Civil War veteran transported to Mars, he’s also fronting Peter Berg’s alien invasion actioner Battleship and starring in Oliver Stone ’s Savages later this year. But as Kitsch revealed to Movieline, the John Carter job wasn’t easy to get — and the toll it took on him during production was a challenge in itself. So who better to offer pro tips on nabbing the spotlight and handling the pressure of becoming an action hero than Kitsch, on the eve of a new chapter in his career? It should be noted that Kitsch is no stranger to action, having appeared in films like Snakes on a Plane , The Covenant , and X-Men Origins: Wolverine already in his six-year career, and no stranger to the spotlight thanks to his beloved turn as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights . But John Carter marks his first starring role and by far his biggest film to date, a sprawling epic set on a vast alien world envisioned in great detail by director Andrew Stanton ( Finding Nemo , WALL-E ). So how did Kitsch land the coveted role? What does his John Carter role share in common with his last one, as the late South African photojournalist Kevin Carter, in The Bang Bang Club ? All this and more as Taylor Kitsch shares his pro tips on landing (and keeping) that action hero gig. 1. Don’t think of yourself as an action star . “That’s you guys labeling me, so me saying yes to that – I can’t say yes to that because I refuse to put myself in that bubble. You saw Bang Bang Club , that’s no action movie. We hope to keep throwing you curveballs so you can’t put me in a spot like that.” 2. Ignore the hype and the naysayers – worry about putting pressure on yourself to do the work so you can sleep at night . “The pressure is what I put myself on in the sense of getting and doing the best I can, and having no regrets with what I put into it. That’s the pressure. The pressure now is that you can overthink everything, from how it’s going to do and how people are going to perceive it, you, this and that. If you want to drive yourself crazy over that you can, but I think that’s why you put so much into it. So you can lay down at night and be okay with what you did and be like, you know what? I still wouldn’t change it. If you say I’m fucking shit, I still wouldn’t change it.” 3. Be picky. Taking on a blockbuster gig is a huge commitment, so make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. “Hopefully you feel that, you see it. You see the emotion and the energy that it takes to really do what it deserves, potentially. I think that’s what it’s about, and that’s why I’m so picky with the jobs. I’m all in. I’m never going to do a job for the sake of working. So we’re at a point now of looking at the next job, or whatever that is, and my people, my team, have been with me from Day One. If I don’t work for a year, I’m OK with it. We’re not going to do it unless we have to do it. “I was and still am okay with doing indies for the rest of my life. I don’t need to be in the spotlight; if anything, I’ll push it away even more. I live in Austin. I love the work. I love the storytelling, and that’s what the first meeting represented. I could play so many parts in this one character, from the Western, from the guy that doesn’t give a shit, to the guy who’s finally come full circle and become the leader that he’s pushed away for so long. I love that, and I love working with an Andrew Stanton, a Willem Dafoe, a Mark Strong, a Sam Morton, a Thomas Haden Church, a Lynn Collins.” 4. Make sure there is a “there” there. “Man, I will be shit if you give me nothing to play. Any actor will tell you, the more you can give me, the more depth I can escape into, the better it’s going to be on every level.” 5. Flawed characters are more interesting to play, and are worth diving into headfirst — even if it takes a lot out of you. “It’s not the war thing, but the more interesting guys I grew up watching — I like watching the more flawed guys than the perfect guys, and that’s more interesting for me to play. That’s more real to me. I love that and I love bringing people into a performance and it takes so fucking much out of you to do it honestly, but it’s worth it. Kev Carter – you won’t meet a guy more flawed. That crushed me.” 6. Remember to maintain balance with the emotional and physical demands of carrying a tentpole… especially when they require regular, long-term maintenance of action-hero muscles. “I was beyond exhausted in this film. Yeah, six day weeks is what killed me. I think I just pushed myself — I don’t regret it because you see it, but at times I could have had a better balance, maybe, just because waking up that early so often and the lack of sleep and pushing yourself that much, to have that much energy onscreen… for seven months, to be at that aesthetic! It’d be a lot easier if I had one shirtless scene and I could just get toned for that then be OK and balance it out, but it was 11 months that I was on that diet and training regimen. It’s very unreal to do that and to look that way, obviously, but it’s what I guess I demanded out of myself. This goes back to Kev [Carter, of the Bang Bang Club ], too. No one asked me to lose a pound, I wanted to. 7. That said, don’t worry too much about how you look, stud . “Fuck, man. You never want to be that conscious in a scene. That’d mean I’d be so totally out of John Carter mode, if I’m really that conscious of how I look and the lighting. That’s really bad. [But] you definitely have to do what you have to do to put yourself in the moment so it’s connecting to whatever it is. I think you’ve just got to get to a point where you’re okay with how you look and what you’re doing and you leave it and let it lay. Whatever it is, I look at that scene and it is what it is” 8. Go out for a role knowing it’s yours to lose. The audition process for John Carter was particularly grueling, with five actors and five actresses vying for the same roles over the course of two intense days. “Man, I was just so focused, I was so myopic with it. I prepped so much for that audition. I’ve always been an underdog and I came in on this gig that way, but it was like I felt it was mine to lose. I went in with that thinking really, if I can go in all out on this, I’m going to go in and kill it as much as I can. But it was a tough process, for sure. Two 14-hour days… and you’ve got to remember, what’s bizarre about getting roles and auditioning for the most part is you do your prep and everything for the most part after you get the role. It’s like OK, now I’ve got to sit down and really sketch this guy out. It’s a trip. “ 9. Whatever you do, do not go out partying the night before a big audition. “I won’t call the guy out, but I know and it gave me more oomph, put it that way, knowing that this one guy that was up for it was out partying quite hard the night before or two nights before. No matter what, I hear about that and I know I got ya, man. It’s like, good on ya for making it a little bit easier on me.” John Carter is in theaters this week. Read more on the film here . Arianny Celeste Perfect Bikini Hotness

I love that any hot chick can now post pictures of herself on the internet with minimal effort thanks to the magic of Twitter . Here’s Arianny Celeste posing by the pool in a great little bikini shot. Just the right camera angle, the lighting is good and the cleavage is even better. She should do this more often. Throw in a few cocktails and The Tuna resting my head on that cute little booty, and these would be perfect.

My Bieber experience was on November 23, 2011. It was at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting and I was flipping out!! I went to the Today Show earlier that day and had no idea about the lighting but my mom works for CNBC so she got us in. I was behind the stage waiting for Justin to come out but he still wasn’t there. Then, all of the sudden, I see Scooter Braun walk by and I couldn’t help but scream,”Scooter!!!” He was setting up for the concert so he said he would come back later. When he came back, another person was with him. Kenny Hamilton! I said,”Omigod can i get a picture with you?!” They gladly said, “Of course!” I seriously couldn’t breathe. I was definitely hyperventilating. Then I saw Dan Kanter go by and of course I yelled, “Dan the Man can we take a picture with you!” As nice as can be he said, “Sure! No problem!” I honestly thought I was going to faint. After we took our picture, he didn’t leave. We talked for a half an hour! He talked about how Justin would read the comments we all post on his Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and everything into the night. And how he genuinely just really cares about all of us loyal beliebers. He realizes that we will do anything for him . It was so amazing to know that he cares because he is always so busy with concerts, appearences, etc. After that he said he had to go set up for the show so he left. Then I met Alfredo! He was putting his face against the glass window like a blowfish and I met Mike his other background dancer. They were both so nice. I also met Scrappy . He’s pretty cool, too. I never got to meet Justin that day but he did make my year. He KISSED my hand. I felt like i was seriously going to die! He looked straight into my eyes and sang the lyrics from “Drummer Boy,” little baaabbyyyy, barupabumbaaaa! I seriously could not believe this was actually happening to me. Someday, I will meet him and say, “You kissed my hand at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting and it was the best day of my life!” Until then, I will always love Justin Bieber. – Juliana Read more: My Bieber experience was on November 23, 2011. My name is Jenna and on Friday November 18 at about 5:50 PM, I met Justin Bieber.  My mom, sister and I left our house at about 4:00 in the morning to go to NYC to try and find Justin.  We met my sister’s friend Giovanna in the city. It was really cold outside but none of us cared.  The first place we went was Hot 97 radio station because we knew he was supposed to be on that day. When we got there, we did not see any other fans so we thought that was weird. We asked someone who was working in the lobby of the building and they told us that Justin had been there the day before . He pre-taped the radio interview! I was so disappointed but my mom said that he might go to the last Regis show. We took a cab and went up to where The Regis show was being filmed. We stood outside in the cold for a few hours and saw a lot of famous people arrive but not Justin. I was disappointed again but I didn’t want to give up. We decided to go to the Empire State Building because Justin had said in an interview that he would be doing the lighting ceremony at the there. We got there and found out that there was a ceremony going on in the lobby at 2:00pm.  We waited outside in the cold for hours. We were all tired, cold and hungry but we waited because we didn’t want to miss him. At about 2:00 we saw 4 black trucks pull up in front of the Empire State Building and we knew it was him! He arrived from a side entrance and there were no other fans around. We ran towards the door and just as we got there, about 50 people came out of nowhere. When Justin came out of the truck, his security surrounded him and he went straight into the building. We barely even saw him. He did not stop for anyone. I was so sad and I wanted to go home because I was so tired and cold. We were out since 4:00 in the morning. But my mom said we should try one more radio station- Sirius. We took another cab up to Sirius radio and we went in from the North entrance. Once we got inside, we went down the escalator to go get something to eat downstairs. We ate for 10 minutes and then we went back upstairs. For some reason, my sister’s friend said that we should take the escalator up to the South side of the building. I don’t know why she said that but I am so happy that she did. We went to stand in the lobby near the glass doors on the south side of the building. We put our stuff down and were so happy to finally be indoors in a warm place. Just as we put our stuff down, Justin and his mom and a few security guards walked in! I couldn’t believe it.  We were the only people in the lobby.  There were no other fans there! There were no papparazzi! And Justin walked in! But secruity stood in front of us and Justin was walking past us. I was so upset because I didn’t think he would stop. As he was walking by my mom said, “Justin we’ve been looking for you since 4 am. How about taking a picture with my daughter?” He looked at us and said “I will be back down. I promise. I promise.”   And he got into the elevator and went up. I was so happy he even talked to us. We waited for about an hour and a half and there were no fans there. No one knew he was even here. After an hour and a half, we saw his truck pull up to the glass doors in front of the building so we knew he was coming down. I got my camera ready and stared at the elevator.  All of a sudden the doors open and Jaden Smith and Justin Bieber walked out!  There was no one else there. His security surrounded him and started walking towards the glass doors we were standing near. Out of nowhere, people started coming in off the street with cameras and people were screaming, “Justin Justin”!  They were not fans but older people. I have no idea why they knew he was coming down. So Justin is walking and not really stopping for anyone so I thought he is not going to stop for me! I was so upset.  But then I heard Justin say, “Over there” and they all start walking towards us.   All of a sudden, the security guards separated and Justin Bieber was standing in front of us.  He said to my mom, “I told you I was coming back right?”  My mom said, “Yes you did, thank you.”  Then he bends down and looks at me and says, “I hear you’ve been looking for me all day. Thank you so much.” And he tells me to come to him.  So I walk towards him and he said, “Thank you” again and then he kisses me on the cheek!!!! My mom said “OMG, I didn’t get a picture of that.”  So Justin said, “It’s okay we can do it again” and he kisses me on the cheek again and this time, he does it for about 30 seconds and makes a noise like MMMMMM when he is kissing me!   My mom took the picture and then my mom said to me, “Jenna, what do you want to give Justin?”  So I hugged him and he said “No no” and he points to his cheek and tells me to give him a kiss.  So I kissed him back!! Then he hugged me and we took a few more pictures.  Then I asked him to autograph the purple ticket I had saved from his movie and he said to me and my mom, “You waited for me all day so I will sign anything you want.  I will take as many pictures as you want.  You waited all day for me so now I have time for you.”  I could not believe what I was hearing.   Then Justin and my mom started having a conversation about where we live and he was telling my mom that he was not feeling that well and he was telling us what he did all week and how tired he was.  We were having a normal conversation with Justin Bieber.  There were people all around us yelling, “Justin Justin” but he ignored them. His security made sure no one came near us. We were all alone with him for about 10 minutes. I thought I was going to faint. If my mom didn’t take pictures, I wouldn’t believe it actually happened to me. I thought it was a dream. He took pictures with my sister and her friend.  He autographed a few things for us and he talked to us like he knew us. Then he asked us if he could do anything else.  All I wanted was a picture and I got so much more! I was so happy I couldn’t say anything else. My mom thanked him so much and we gave him hugs and then his security surrounded him and walked him out the door and into his truck. I could not believe what happened to me. I never thought in a million years he would talk to me like that, or kiss me, or ask for a kiss back.  It was the best day of my life.  And it is true – Never say never!!! -@ Jennabieber0301 View original post here: My name is Jenna and on Friday November 18 at about 5:50 PM, I…

Ellie Goulding Brings Lights To National Christmas Tree

Big Time Rush and will.i.am also will perform Thursday at White House tree-lighting ceremony. By Steven Roberts Ellie Goulding Photo: MTV News While another English songstress has received a tremendous amount of well-deserved praise here in the States this year, Ellie Goulding has been working slowly but steadily, making a name for herself on this side of the Atlantic. Her debut album, Lights, hit #1 on the U.K. charts, she won Critic’s Choice at the 2010 BRIT Awards, and she’s even had the opportunity to perform at the Royal Wedding reception for Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Of course, Americans don’t really care about any of that. They do, however, really like Christmas. Goulding is set to perform at the White House during the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, along with will.i.am, Big Time Rush and the incomparable Kermit the Frog. The ceremony will take place Thursday at the National Park, and the laidback, always-chill Goulding said she’s just as excited about this event as she was about performing at the royal reception. “Prince William saw me about a year earlier, and they were both really big fans of my record. It was simple as that,” Goulding said casually. “I’m quite relaxed about things, probably too relaxed, and so when I found out, I was probably like, ‘Cool.’ ” Goulding, who performed on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year, said she wasn’t sure who recommended her for the tree-lighting gig. While it’s uncertain whether President Obama had heard of her, or maybe his daughters are fans, her lead single “Lights” might have had a hand in it. Holly Madison Takes The Girls For A Walk

Normally I would be upset that Playboy hottie Holly Madison is covering up that cleavage that I love so much, it always seems like such a waste, but I really like what she’s done with her breasts today. Here she is walking the street in a plain old black dress that really shows off her awesome sweater mounds. Maybe it’s the lighting or maybe she’s wearing some new bra or something, but I don’t remember her being so voluptuous. I love her.

On December 5th 2010 I met Justin Bieber at his book signing in London at a secret location. My mum got my two sisters and I tickets to go. I live in Manchester so we got up early on Sunday morning and drove all the way to London. We got there and waited in the queue for about 2 hours. I am poorly and regularly faint so I had to be in a wheelchair. I got taken to the front of the queue where everyone else disabled was and we got put into our own little room. They told us as we couldn’t walk up the stairs to get to the signing, Justin would come down and meet us separately. We waited ages for him to meet the other 1000 people upstairs. Then Kenny walked in our room, my sister was so excited cause she loves him. She got a photo with him and got him to sign a photo she had brought. He told us we would have to go to another room because the lighting wasn’t good enough in that room for photos. We all went through and waited until we saw Justin come down some stairs and wave. I was so shocked I couldn’t say anything. Everyone went up and got there photo with him, then it was my turn. I was walking up and all I could say was, “Oh my God” I didn’t know what to do, I got a hug and a photo. As I was walking off, I handed Kenny a DVD called “Obsessed” that I had bought for Justin, as it has Beyonce in it. Justin and Kenny were talking about and looking at my DVD for ages. Then Kenny said, “You will have to let me borrow that Justin”, I was so happy.  I got handed a signed copy of First Step To Forever. I got out of the room and back into my wheelchair and fainted again. Luckily I didn’t faint whilst I was with him! My mum and dad both thought Justin and Kenny were really nice people. I’m so glad I got to meet Justin. Never Say Never!!! The second time I saw Justin was at his concert on the 4th March 2011 in Birmingham. I live in Manchester but I wanted to go to the first show, so we travelled down especially for the concert. The concert was absolutely amazing and it couldnt of been better. Whilst he was singing ‘One Time’ I burst into tears. It was also really amazing to see Willow and Jaden Smith perform. It was one of the best nights of my life, so thank you Justin for everything and I hope you come again soon. – Laura @lollipop1996   Read the rest here: On December 5th 2010 I met Justin Bieber at his book signing in…
