British actress tells MTV News how she mastered the accent in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in Universal City, California. Photo: WireImage Are you tired of watching the “Perks of Being a Wallflower” trailer yet? Neither are we! Luckily for all of us, MTV News spent some time with the very likable cast at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday in order to glean a few tidbits about the movie , like lovely British actress Emma Watson ‘s first time speaking in an American accent on film. When asked how she mastered the foreign-to-her dialect, Watson thanked her co-stars, Ezra Miller and Logan Lerman . “I had these guys,” Watson said, gesturing to Miller and Lerman as her accent tutors. “These guys were very supportive and they told me when I said things that didn’t really sound right. I worked with a coach and I hung out.” “You hung out!” Miller laughed. “She hung out, that’s how she did it. She hung out.” We decided to put Watson on the spot and test her skills with a request to repeat the following phrase in her best American accent: “Ryan Gosling is so hot.” She did not disappoint, repeating the phrase with gusto. “That was really good,” both Miller and Lerman agreed. Based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky (published by MTV Books), “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” follows high school freshman Charlie (Lerman) as he learns to navigate adolescence with the help of new friends Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Miller). The movie opens everywhere September 14. The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Three Musketeers cutie Logan Lerman as introverted-but-adorbs high school freshman Charlie (Lerman), who enters teen society searching for like-minded “misfits” and finds Emma Watson and Ezra Miller (last seen making a very different impression on his classmates in We Need to Talk About Kevin ). Is Charlie going to go all Angela Chase, narrating the brave new world of busting weird dance moves at Homecoming and standing up to bullies and shouting ironically at cheerleaders? If you’ve read Stephen Chbosky’s source novel of the same name, you already know what to expect — and it’s not quite as My So-Called Life -y as the trailer suggests. (Chbosky also writes and directs the film, with John Malkovich among producers who are onboard.) While we get a glimpse here of Paul Rudd as Charlie’s teacher, there’s not much of a peek at the rest of the cast, including Nicholas Braun, Johnny Simmons, Kate Walsh, Dylan McDermott, and Melanie Lynskey. Still… Verdict: In for the triple threat of young talent that is Lerman, Watson, and Miller alone. Bring the angst, kids. The Perks of Being a Wallflower hits theaters on September 14.
Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller and Watson debuted film’s first trailer during MTV Movie Awards. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Logan Lerman arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Emma Watson and Logan Lerman for Movie Awards Best Kiss in 2013? It could happen! The two actors, along with co-star Ezra Miller , were on hand at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards pre-show to introduce the first trailer for their coming-of-age film ” The Perks of Being a Wallflower ,” an adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s 1999 novel published by MTV Books. The story centers around introverted Charlie (Lerman), who’s lured out of his shell by step-siblings Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Miller) and introduced to a world of sex, drugs and, of course, rock and roll. Charlie nurses an unrequited crush on newfound friend Sam throughout most of the narrative. And while the trailer only hinted at a few tender moments shared between the two characters, you better believe there will be some lip-locking to be had when the movie hits theaters September 14. And according to Lerman, those scenes weren’t too hard to handle. “It happened in front of a crew, and people were there, and we did it a few times. And that was it,” Lerman recalled of his cinematic smooch with Watson. “It’s kind of odd when you’re doing it for a movie. It’s kind of weird. She’s cool. It wasn’t as awkward as it could have been. It’s Emma Watson, so I’m a lucky guy.” Yet, Lerman couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like had his impressions of the moment been less than savory. “What if I was complaining, though? ‘Oh, God. I had to kiss that girl!’ ” he joked. We have a feeling a number of actors would have been happy to take your place, Logan. Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. Logan Lerman, arguably our most rosy-cheeked D’A rtagnan, made an appearance on a Korean talk show while promoting the new Three Musketeers at the Busan International Film Festival. Maybe the movie’s not so hot , but you’ll see in this clip that Lerman’s cute awkwardness is the best we’ve seen since Jesse Eisenberg (and not as flip). Also, the host steals Lerman’s shoes, and for some reason it’s like watching a trainwreck.
If Sherlock Holmes could be successfully steampunked into a rakish action hero, there’s no reason The Three Musketeers couldn’t be gearpunked into some tolerable 17th century equivalent — and Athos, Porthos, Aramis and young D’A rtagnan are actually soldiers, so no serious character tweaking is required to send them off into repeated swashbuckling setpieces. It’s not the addition of airships and male dangly earrings that make Paul W.S. Anderson’s take on Alexandre Dumas’ classic, much-adapted adventure such a drag, it’s everything else — the incoherence, the anvil-heavy dialogue, the lack of anything beyond the broadest of characterizations.

Not that anyone really asked for it, but, like it or not, you’re getting a new Arthur movie this weekend. If you’re a fan of the original film about an booze-loving millionaire, you may be at least curious how this new version stacks up to the original. Is Arthur still a mad, drunken fool? Is it a scene-for-scene remake? Since you may have some questions before you fork over your hard earned money, Movieline compares the two films so that you won’t be lost between the moon and New York City.
