‘Nanny McPhee Returns’: The Reviews Are In!

Emma Thompson’s sequel charms many critics, but it’s way too saccharine for others. By Eric Ditzian Emma Thompson in “Nanny McPhee Returns” Photo: Universal Pictures This weekend is set to be a crowded one at the cinema, as five new flicks receive the wide-release treatment. None of them — from “Piranha 3D” to “Vampires Suck” — are likely to come out on top at the box office, as “The Expendables” looks to commandeer the top spot for a second straight week. Of all the fresh faces, though, Emma Thompson might well perform the best, as “Nanny McPhee Returns,” which the 51-year-old Brit both wrote and stars in, arrives on U.S. shores over four years after the original film. The latest installment has already grossed $62.6 million overseas. How will it fair domestically? Reviews are largely positive, though it remains to be seen if “Nanny McPhee” can overtake the “Twilight” parody, “Vampires Suck,” or the Bow Wow-starring, “Lottery Ticket.” Here’s what the critics have to say. The Story “Nanny McPhee is dispatched to help a family in desperate need of order. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) lives with her three children on a rundown family farm in the countryside. Her husband, Rory, is fighting overseas, and poor Isabel must cope with a shiftless brother-in-law (Rhys Ifans) determined to make her sell the farm, a part-time job with a comically absent-minded shopkeeper (Maggie Smith) and the arrival of two more children: posh cousins Cyril (Eros Vlahos) and Celia (Rosie Taylor-Ritson), sent from London for safety but creating havoc as soon as they arrive.” — Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times The Performances “Vlahos and Asa Butterfield, as Isabel’s eldest boy, have the movie’s most effective scene, in which they confront Ralph Fiennes, playing Vlahos’ stiff military dad, during the boys’ quick trip to London to learn the fate of Butterfield’s father. … Other roles call for too much mugging. This would include Maggie Smith’s turn as a forgetful old shopkeeper and Sam Kelly as an aging air-raid warden. The film suffers slightly from a curious sort of ageism, where the older you get the more ‘comic’ you become. In the title role, Thompson wisely lets her makeup artist do much of the initial work — the moles and hair do start to disappear as the children learn her lessons, leaving her more or less recognizable by movie’s end. Meanwhile, she uses her commanding voice to bring the movie’s energy to her character while standing aside to give the child protagonists plenty of room to romp.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter The Jokes “The movie’s one other concession to modernity, besides the computer graphics, is the relentless poo-poo and flatulence jokes that have been inserted, ostensibly to make 11-year-olds scream with delight. Maggie Smith — that is, Dame Maggie Smith — playing a demented shopkeeper, plops down on a wet cow patty and announces that her seat is quite comfy. At another point, the movie leaves you with the impression that Nanny has apologized for flatulence. In retrospect, it’s actually remarkable that Julie Andrews got through all 139 minutes of ‘Mary Poppins’ without ever passing wind.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco The Dissenters “In the disappointing sequel from Thompson and director Susanna White (the BBC’s ‘Bleak House’), we get a gentler, more wink-inclined Nanny McPhee, not to mention kids whose rambunctiousness seems manufactured rather than entertainingly exaggerated. … The movie needn’t be so busy, or so sweet. … [The] plot demands and a general push for saccharinity have [McPhee] taking to the air on the bike, and being saluted by the Queen’s Guard, and cheerily rocketing down a country byway. So much for skipping the spoonful of sugar.” — Tom Russo, Boston Globe The Final Word “This sequel to 2006’s ‘Nanny McPhee’ is almost as charming as the first. There are problems, though, in its tone, segueing awkwardly from escapism to gritty reality. Some of that is mitigated by the endearing performances and the way the story imbues its young characters with intelligence, motivation and depth, qualities often lacking for children in family films.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Rihanna Looking To Re-Create ‘Lie’ Magic On Next Album

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer Alex Da Kid is working on Rated R follow-up. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna has found a winning formula in her Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie.” Naturally, for her next album, she’s reportedly looking to the song’s producer, Alex Da Kid, for new hits. “We worked together about a year before ‘Love the Way You Lie’ in London, and obviously that song has helped the people around her and her label say, ‘Oh, that’s a big hit, we want another one,’ ” Alex explained to Billboard. “You know how the music industry is.” The “Lie” producer — who also produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” — said that the key to Rihanna’s future success is all about finding the balance between Rated R edginess and the hit-making sound of the Eminem track. “I’d say it’s like a mixture of her two sides,” he said. “It’s commercial, but at the same time, it’s got an edge to it — it has substance.” Alex Da Kid isn’t the only producer coming onboard for the album. Songwriter Sean Garrett has been in the studio with the Barbadian star and recently told MTV News that the new songs will reflect Rihanna’s current, lighter state-of-mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett said. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about.” The album will earn fans in the clubs too, if David Guetta has his way with it. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What kind of music do you want to see Rihanna do next? Nicki Minaj Told Jay Sean She Was ‘Going In’ On ‘2012’

Young Money rapper is uniquely ‘fun and playful’ on the track, British crooner tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images It will come as no surprise to fans of Jay Sean that his new single, “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” boasts bars by Young Money princess Nicki Minaj. After all, his U.S. debut single, “Down,” features Lil Wayne , which was followed by Lil Jon and Sean Paul jumping on “Do You Remember.” Still, the Hounslow hero (Jay Sean was born near the Wimbledon site in West London) was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from Miss Minaj earlier this year. “It was actually a surprise for me,” Sean told MTV News last week. “Nicki Minaj heard [‘2012’], she called me and … she was like, ‘I love it! It’s sick. I’m going in on this!’ “I’m a fan of Nicki’s. I think she’s incredible,” he continued. “And I had wanted to work with her for a while. But when she picked this song out herself, I was like, ‘Go ahead. Bless it. Please.’ ” Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful hip-hop artists at the moment, all before her debut album is released. And Jay Sean is pleased not only because her feature in “2012” brings the gravity of her presence, but that she attacked the song with a swagger different from her usual form. “A testament to a great artist is the fact that they are able to interpret the song for what it is,” Sean said. “Now, Nicki is a rapper. This is a pop record. She took the message of having fun and enjoying yourself, living like it’s the end, living every minute like it’s the last, and she put that vibe and that swagger on the track … and that voice is fun and playful on it. It was great.” Minaj also appears in the video for “2012” , which was shot last month in Los Angeles. Jay Sean’s sophomore U.S. effort, Freeze Time, is tentatively set for a November 2 release. Amanpour Elevates British Journalist Who Sees ‘Culture of Hate’ in U.S., Time to Divide Up Our ‘Pie’

Christiane Amanpour elevated a liberal British journalist, with little U.S. television experience, to the This Week roundtable where she presumed the government must run the economy and distribute the economic pie while she took pot shots at how the efforts to control illegal immigration proves America’s descent into a “culture of hate.” Gillian Tett , U.S. Managing Editor of the London-based Financial Times newspaper, began by insisting, that to respond to stagnant employment numbers: “The big question now is can the economy keep growing if the government doesn’t keep pumping in money?” Applying a European economic model, Tett fretted “that so much of America in the last few decades has been about trying to focus on growing the pie, not worrying about how to divide it up” as Americans didn’t “worry about social equity and things like that.” But, showing little faith that Obamanomics will work, she ruminated, “if we are entering a period when the pie is stagnant, the question that’s going to be very political is how do you divide that pie up?” In her final remark on unemployment, she warned “you really are starting to see the beginnings of a culture of hate, of finger-pointing, of scape-goating.” Minutes later, however, in a discussion of the proposal to modify the 14th amendment to end automatic citizenship through birth, Tett assumed those dark days have already arrived: “It’s quick fix soundbite politics in this culture of hate and this, you know, scape-goating that’s going on right now.” Others on Amanpour’s panel: Politico’s John Harris, New Yorker’s George Packer and former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson. Last week, on reviewing Amanpour’s debut: “ Amanpour Slums to Take on U.S. Politics, Flummoxed Pelosi’s Victories Aren’t Better Appreciated ” Comments from Gillian Tett during the roundtable on the August 8 This Week with Christiane Amanpour: > I think it’s important to realize that it illustrates is that the President, right now, is at an important juncture point. For the last year, we’ve had some growth in the American economy, but much of that’s been due to government aid, government spending, or what economists call an inventory rebuild – basically, companies and shops ran down their stocks back in late 2008, they rebuilt them, but that process is kind of finished. And the big question now is can the economy keep growing if the government doesn’t keep pumping in money? > The problem in a way, in a sense the social contract in America., the American dream is starting to fragment because for years America’s prided itself on having an unemployment rate that was a lot lower than Europe’s, but it didn’t have a social safety net like Europe. Now, in a sense, it doesn’t have a social safety net, and yet, shockingly, the unemployment rate is approaching European levels, in some cases actually exceeding it. And that’s a real challenge, not just in an economic sense, but in a political sense too about what is the American dream? > What’s fascinating is that so much of America in the last few decades has been about trying to focus on growing the pie, not worrying about how to divide it up because if you keep growing the pie, through innovation, through private sector enterprise, then you don’t have to worry about social equity and things like that. But if we are entering a period when the pie is stagnant, the question that’s going to be very political is how do you divide that pie up? > And poisonous as well. You really are starting to see the beginnings of a culture of hate, of finger-pointing, of scape-goating. And that could fuel the way for some very nasty, very negative politics going forward.   > [on amending 14th amendment] It’s quick fix soundbite politics in this culture of hate and this, you know, scape-goating that’s going on right now.
