Director Sam Mendes isn’t making ‘some chamber piece about people’s emotions,’ Craig assures MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Daniel Craig Photo: MTV News James Bond fans fear not, there will be plenty of action in the much-anticipated upcoming Bond flick, “Skyfall.” For months, the rumor mill had Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes stripping away the action for the 23rd Bond movie in order to make a more dramatic movie that reflected the emotional depth of the characters. But when MTV News recently visited the London set of “Skyfall” , James Bond himself, Daniel Craig , was quick to dispel those rumors, assuring fans that he and Mendes have struck a balance between drama and the action that Bond flicks are known for. “I sat down with Sam Mendes two years ago, three years ago — now it’s getting on four — and we discussed what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it, and he’s one of the biggest Bond fans around,” said Craig, who’s taking on the 007 role for the third time. “He’s not out to do an angst-ridden movie, some chamber piece about people’s emotions,” Craig continued. “It’s a Bond movie. But we both agreed that if he cast the film, which he did really well, and we brought in older characters and new characters, that we’d have something really rich and sort of exciting to watch.” The cast includes Judi Dench (playing “M” for the seventh time), Ralph Fiennes in a mysterious role and Oscar winner Javier Bardem . “I think it’s a James Bond movie and this movie is going to have everything that any James Bond fan would expect and even more,” Bardem told us. “Also the emotional aspect of it and the action aspect of the movie as well, it’s going to contain a lot of surprises for the audience.” And Bardem should know what fans want as a longtime fan of the franchise. “I’ve seen many, many James Bond movies,” he said. “It’s fun to be part of one of them. It’s really fun, but again, it’s also about the people … around this movie that is really exciting to work with — amazing cast, a great director and great character to play. It’s a very serious movie, it’s very solid.” Bond fans can catch all the “Skyfall” action when it hits theaters November 9. In an interview with Capital FM , the always-feisty Rihanna teased that she recently saw the finished video and it lived up to her expectations. “I can’t wait to see what all my fans think. I saw it a couple of days ago. I love it,” she said. “It’s beautiful. It’s different from anything Drake has ever done.” Ri was spotted heading to one of Drake’s shows earlier this week in London when he performed at the O2 arena. Post-show, the twosome were spotted at London hotspot Low. Perhaps she saw the video during their hangout session? Rihanna and Drake previously appeared together in her video for “What’s My Name?” In the clip, the real-life pals played a lovey-dovey couple, and fans have been waiting to see what these two had in store for the “Take Care” video since February, when word of the shoot went public. Director Yoann Lemoine called the three-day shoot “very minimal” and “mellow,” adding, “They seemed to be super close, and that’s what I wanted for the video. They fit together pretty well, so it was just easy. “There’s a lot of space in the video, and I wanted the visuals to pay tribute to that,” he continued. “It pays tribute to nature. When I listened to the track, I was seeing a landscape … involving animals and massive landscapes. I won’t say too much, but it’s very surprising that there are very few elements in it. Welch says she got a lot of material for ‘Breath of Life’ from Charlize Theron’s beautifully wicked character. By James Montgomery Florence Welch Photo: Samir Hussein/ Redferns When Florence Welch was asked to write a song for the upcoming “Snow White and the Huntsman” soundtrack, she was given the opportunity to watch a select few scenes from the film itself … and almost automatically, she found herself drawing inspiration from a rather unlikely source: Namely, Charlize Theron’s wicked Queen Ravenna. “The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing. She’s kind of like charcoal or something,” Welch told MTV News on Thursday (March 29). “[There are] these amazing scenes where she’s kind of picking out birds’ hearts and eating them. [She has] this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.” So, in a bit of a, uh, non-traditional move, Welch ended up writing a song called “Breath of Life,” which is sung very much from the perspective of the Queen herself (“I got a lot of material from her!” she laughed. “Beauty, death, life … it was pushing all of my buttons.”) So you can imagine her surprise when, after submitting the song, she found herself sitting in London’s Abbey Road studio, watching it all come together under the care of famed composer James Newton Howard. “We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense … and then we sent that to the guys in L.A. who composed it. And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing,” Welch laughed. “You feel in a bit of a way like you’re kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it’s really incredible. And then we all went into Abbey Road and it was one of the best days of my life; I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional.” And thanks to all that, in a still-growing career that’s seemingly one highlight after the next, Welch said that writing and recording “Breath” was perhaps her favorite moment to date. Even if the whole 60-member choir thing did give her management team palpitations. “My manager was looking at me going ‘Do not get used to this. We cannot afford this 60-piece choir!’ ” she laughed. “It was just wonderful. Me and Isa [Summers, Welch’s Machine partner, and co-writer of the track] were in there, these young women who made music for love, but with not much money or much reason. … It was a really proud day for us. And, musically, for the composers at Universal to have understood the song and see it played out so beautifully, it was an amazing day. In the UK promoting her new film Battleship , Rihanna was asked by a ballsy member of the press if the Two and a Half Men star would be visiting her there. Her response? But records show that the 27-year-old singer did leave behind a nearly $5 million fortune. According to the Associated Press , Winehouse’s estate, worth approximately $4.66 million, will go to her parents. Probate documents revealed on Wednesday showed that Winehouse left assets totaling more than $6.7 million, with $4.66 remaining after taxes and debts. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, is listed as the administrator of her estate and nothing will go to her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she divorced in 2009 after a tumultuous courtship that landed the couple in the tabloids, and jail, on numerous occasions. The singer passed last summer from accidental alcohol poisoning after years of struggling with drug and alcohol issues. In March it was announced that the charity established by Mitch Winehouse in his daughter’s honor, the Amy Winehouse Foundation , would fund a new performing arts scholarship. The grant will pay tuition for a child to attend the Sylvia Young Theatre School, where Amy trained as a teenager. A posthumous album of Winehouse’s final studio recordings, Lioness: Hidden Treasures , was released in December.
