Mary J. Blige, Jessie J On What Makes A ‘VH1 Diva’

‘I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs,’ Dolly Parton tells MTV News before show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1. By Jocelyn Vena Mary J. Blige Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — On Sunday night, some of the music industry’s biggest divas gathered at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan to pay tribute to some of the most-soulful divas in the biz for “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jessie J and Jill Scott all put their new-millennium spin on classics from cities like Detroit, Chicago, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. “I don’t even know what a diva is,” Dolly Parton told MTV News on the red carpet before the big show kicked off. “I think it’s someone that’s strong in their beliefs, strong in their own talent, strong in who they are. … I see a lot of divas around here, and some say I am one, and I don’t know if that’s true or not,” she joked. “Do you think I’m a diva?” Jessie J waxed poetic about the title “diva.” “Sometimes the media can completely misunderstand what the word ‘diva’ means,” she said. “To me, tonight is what it’s about, and every single person’s that been here that’s had longevity, passion, consistent, amazing music that goes around the globe. For me to be a part of it in any way is incredible.” The show recalled some of the greatest hits from divas present, past and future. And it even took time to fondly remember the late Amy Winehouse, whose own music was so deeply inspired by soul music of days past. “She’s in a class by herself,” Mary J. Blige said. “She just broke the mold when she came out; it was like, ‘Wow, who is this?’ And I could hear all of the pain before I even knew she had pain.” While every diva at the show, which airs Monday night (December 19) on VH1, has played a pivotal role in pop music, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy doesn’t believe that many will be as influential as Winehouse. “I don’t think there’s gonna be another voice that cut through the way her voice cut through,” he said. “And I think that alone makes her a legend.” Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine , one of the performers during the tribute, summed up Winehouse: “She was the most incredible artist, and I feel kind of overwhelmed to be doing it,” she said. She later took the stage with Nas, Wanda Jackson and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings to remember Winehouse’s catalogue of music. “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul” airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight on VH1. Rihanna Teases ‘You Da One’ Video With New Still

Talk That Talk singer tweets, ‘You know im already in trouble 4 this but, i like to keep yall in the loop.’ By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna in her video for “You Da One” Photo: Universal Rihanna is giving fans a taste of what they should expect from her forthcoming “You Da One” video. Over the weekend, the Talk That Talk singer tweeted a still from the clip. “#YOUDAONEVIDEO you know im already in trouble 4 this but, i like to keep yall in the loop,” she wrote in the tweet, which also included a photo of Rihanna , topless, leaning back in a chair as she blows smoke into the air. It’s a similar image to her deluxe-edition album cover , where she looks into the camera, also topless and blowing smoke. Helmed by her “We Found Love” director Melina Matsoukas, Rihanna dropped a behind-the-scenes video earlier this month. In the clip, filmed while the singer was on her Loud Tour, a mold is taken of her teeth to create a fanged grill for the video. “I’m getting a grill made for an upcoming video shoot for ‘You Da One,’ but I only want the bottom done with fangs, and they have to make a mold so they can send it to New Castle, ship it from New Castle, get it made, and then send it back to London for the video,” she explained, giving no other details about the grill’s presence in the video. Some photos from the set also leaked around the same time. Wearing a short blond wig with blunt bangs, Rihanna dons a tight white tank top, denim shorts, bold black tights with the word “Boy” written on them in white and a white bowler hat. The look fits the wardrobe she’s been wearing during this album phase, which is very street and punk-inspired. “You Da One” is the second single off the album. Produced by Dr. Luke, it follows up the success of “We Found Love.” “This is one of those records, it becomes very addictive,” she said about the track. “To me, it’s very infectious: The more you listen to it, the more you want to listen to it. It had a reggae vibe, but it’s a sweet little love letter. I love the record. It’s kind of dirty, I love it.” Related Artists Rihanna

‘VH1 Divas’ History: From Katy Perry To Kelly Clarkson

This year’s show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT Monday on VH1, will feature Florence Welch and a tribute to Amy Winehouse. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Getty Images Sunday night (December 18), some of the music industry’s most-soulful divas will be taking the stage for the latest installment of “VH1 Divas.” For some, like Kelly Clarkson , it’s a return engagement, but for others, like Florence and the Machine leading lady Florence Welch, it’s the chance to display diva-like prowess for the first time. Since the show kicked off in 1998, it’s had a long history of getting some of the biggest female performers in the world on the same stage belting out some of pop’s best tunes. That first show gathered Aretha Franklin, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Mariah Carey, quickly becoming a pop-culture milestone. It even prompted the ladies of “Saturday Night Live” to poke fun at the over-the-top singing styles and personalities of the women chosen for the show. In the 11 years since the premiere episode of the concert special, everyone from old-school belters to new-school singing sensations have been billed as “divas.” The show ran annually until 2004, after which it took a break for several years. By the time the show was re-launched in 2009, a whole new crop of pop superstars had emerged. In ’09, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Adele and Miley Cyrus proved their diva status, taking the stage and ushering in a new era. A year later, in 2010, Nicki Minaj, Sugarland, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Keri Hilson, Paramore and Katy Perry brought some new-millennium glamour to the show. That year, the show was dedicated to supporting soldiers and billed “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” event. This year’s show, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT Monday on VH1, will bring Clarkson, Welch, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott and Jessie J to the stage. In a tribute introduced by Nas, Welch, Wanda Jackson, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will honor late soul singer Amy Winehouse . VH1 also will pay tribute to the prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of soul music’s classic tunes onstage at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. And the celebration is not exclusive to women: The Roots have been confirmed as the event’s house band, and ?uestlove is set to pull double duty as musical director. Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy also will perform. “VH1 Divas” airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT Monday on VH1. Florence And The Machine ‘Grateful’ For ‘VH1 Divas’

‘It’s really special for me,’ Florence Welch tells MTV News of performing at ‘VH1 Celebrates Soul’ airing Monday at 9 p.m. ET. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: MTV News Florence and the Machine , Wanda Jackson and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will all take the stage to honor Amy Winehouse at the 2011 “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Nas, a longtime friend of the late singer, will introduce the tribute at the show, which airs Monday night at 9 p.m. ET. Two of the “Rehab” singer’s most memorable tracks will be performed. Jackson and Florence and the Machine are set to team up on “Back to Black,” while Jones & the Dap-Kings will play “You Know I’m No Good.” Both songs are off Winehouse’s 2006 breakthrough album, Back to Black. Frontwoman Florence Welch stopped by the MTV offices on Friday (December 16), and we spoke to her about what it means to appear on the popular VH1 “Divas” series. “It’s a real honor, actually, to be counted amongst these amazing female performers,” Welch told MTV News. “It’s really special for me, because I am still a relatively new artist, and to be up there with these really established singers is amazing for me. … I’m really grateful.” This year, VH1 will pay tribute to prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis and Philadelphia. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of classic tunes, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. In addition to the trio of acts mentioned above, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson , Jill Scott and Jessie J are all set to hit the stage for performances. And the celebration isn’t exclusive to the ladies. The Roots have been confirmed as the event’s house band, and drummer ?uestlove will pull double duty as musical director of the concert. ‘Dark Shadows’: Johnny Depp, Vampires, Spooky First Looks In 2011

We relive the best moments of the year as production on Tim Burton’s 2012 adaptation finally kicked off. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp in production for “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures This year, filming finally began on director Tim Burton’s long -in-the-works big-screen adaptation of “Dark Shadows,” a campy, late-1960s soap opera about vampires, witches and time travel. Burton is a lifelong fan of the series and, as his partner Helena Bonham Carter told MTV News this month, “This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10.” With its atmospheric New England setting and myriad mysterious characters, “Shadows” has the feel of a classic Burton film, more akin to his “Sleepy Hollow” and “Batman” flicks than his more candy-colored efforts like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” And Burton at his dark and spooky best, working on a passion project, is something to get excited about. Production began on “Shadows” at Pinewood Studios outside of London in May. The director lined up a dream cast — from Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer to Chloe Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley, not a single part appears miscast. And while Burton has kept the film under lock and key, paparazzi did catch a fleeting glimpse of Depp during production, which briefly became cause for worry among some fans of the series. The shot of Depp in character as Barnabus Collins, wearing heavy white makeup walking down a seaside hill, found its way online in mid-September and was derided by fans as being too cartoonish, too reminiscent of Depp’s styling in Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Based on those initial images, the world Burton looked to be creating seemed to have little in common with the Gothic aesthetic established in the soap. Concerns were alleviated, however, when just a week later, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official image from the film. Through Burton’s lens (and some creepy filters), Depp’s makeup took on the undead-but-oddly alluring look you’d expect from a traditional vampire movie. The rest of the cast captured the feel of their TV counterparts too: Pfeiffer looked regal and sullen as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard; Johnny Lee Miller’s smarm as Roger Collins was apparent; and Bonham Carter looked every bit the orange-haired, eccentric “alcoholic psychiatrist,” Dr. Julia Hoffman. Of the film, Moretz, who plays Carolyn Stoddard, had this to say when talking to MTV News last month: “It straddles the typical Burton line: camp and drama. It’s an amazing movie. Going in and working on this movie with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter — it really does get back to Tim’s roots. It gets back to ‘Beetlejuice,’ ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ back to true Burton . So working on this movie was epic for me because he’s always been my dream director to work with because, god, he’s so iconic.” Moretz’s “Shadows” co-stars share the love for Burton. Pfeiffer , who worked with the director on 1992’s”Batman Returns,” described work on the new film as a “dream job.” “[It is] such a fun cast and we had so much fun. I just love working with Tim [Burton], I love watching him direct. [There’s] nobody like him,” she told MTV News. “I loved meeting Helena and getting to know her. I hope it’s successful so that we can do a bunch of them because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Hopefully, that on-set camaraderie and excitement will help “Shadows” fulfill fans’ high expectations. The original soap spanned some 1,225 episodes, so there’s plenty of plot for sequels if Pfeiffer gets her wish. While we’re still waiting for a trailer for the May 11, 2012, release (come on, Tim, give us something!), what we’ve seen so far gives us faith that Burton and Co. are getting it all exactly right! Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard and Louis C.K.’s Louie also make MTV News’ list, which will be unveiled all week. By MTV News staff Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle in “Castle” Photo: ABC As 2011 draws to a close, the MTV News team has been looking back on our favorite moments of the year in music and movies — and now, it’s time to turn our attention to another obsession of ours: television. The year brought us countless memorable TV turns from not just your favorite stars, but even some more obscure personalities you may not have heard about. To recognize those achievements, we’re happy to present MTV News’ Top 50 TV Characters of 2011! Our list kicks off with a healthy mix of adventurous animated characters, impossibly hilarious comedians, reality stars worth their weight in laughs and gasps, and smug (but heroic) leading men. 50. Finn (“Adventure Time”) At 26, I’m probably too old to be watching cartoons, but I can’t help but get transfixed and regress to an 8-year-old whenever Cartoon Network’s amazing series “Adventure Time” is on. Set 1,000 years from now in the Land of Ooo, “Adventure Time” follows Finn the Human (possibly the last of us) and his pal Jake the Dog. While Jake is his own ball of awesome and the Land of Ooo has a whole host of great characters, it’s Finn who comes in at #50 on our list. A 13-year-old boy, Finn is on a never-ending quest to discover how awesome the world is and to protect what is righteous by kicking evil’s butt. From his wholesome naivet
