Kirsten Dunst Meets Missing Woman’s Family For ‘All Good Things’

‘I think they’re so relieved that the story is being told,’ actress says. By Kara Warner Kirsten Dunst Photo: MTV News When an actor takes on a role based on a real person or event, one of the best ways for them to get into the head of the person they’re playing is to meet with them or someone close to them. In the case of Kirsten Dunst’s preparation for the upcoming thriller “All Good Things” (which is based on real events), however, her in-person meeting with her character’s family was more difficult than enlightening: The woman she plays, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982 and hasn’t been found. “I met Kathie Durst’s brother, and I guess what would have been her niece,” Dunst told MTV News recently during a press day for “All Good Things.” “We went over to their house. It was really nice, but it was difficult, because I’m playing someone who was so dear to them that went missing. I just listened, basically,” she explained. “I think that, for them, it’s still difficult to talk about. I’m not going to probe with questions. That’s a really intimate environment, and I was invited to their home,” Dunst continued. She went on to say that what stayed with her long after the meeting was the family’s continued love for Kathie. Dunst also came away with a sense of sympathy for the woman, who fell in love with a charming, yet troubled man from a very powerful family. “I can see how when someone falls in love with someone who can take you away financially, is very wealthy, sometimes you lose touch with your family and what’s really going on,” she said. Regarding how the family is dealing with a big-screen adaptation of their loved one’s tragic tale, Dunst said she believes they feel a sense of relief. “It seems difficult for them to know that this man who did this to her, his family, no one helped or did anything, and [Kathie’s family] didn’t have the means to help find her,” she said. “So, I think they’re so relieved that the story is being told and brought to light.” And despite the ominous, slightly creepy tone of the film — due in large part to Ryan Gosling’s chilling portrayal as Kathie’s scarred, bottled-up husband — Dunst said the discomfort is worth it. “I think that the performances are really strong, and I think that because it’s a true story and it’s so shocking. It’s just unbelievable and frightening, but also you get this love story,” she explained. “A lot of things are happening in this film, and it’s still an unsolved mystery, and I think that always makes everything so much more believable.” “All Good Things” opens in New York on Friday, and Los Angeles and additional cities December 10. Weezer Revisit Pinkerton At Second Of Two Shows In San Francisco

Band performed 1994’s Blue Album at previous night’s show. By Matt Elias Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo performs in San Francisco on Monday Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Halfway into Weezer ‘s set on Tuesday night, frontman Rivers Cuomo was sprawled out onstage, basking in the overwhelming sense of adoration in the room. It was night two of Weezer’s Memories Tour stop in San Francisco, at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, and the band started with a 10-song set followed by their 1996 sophomore effort Pinkerton in its entirety (night one saw Weezer play its entire Blue album ). As loose and energetic as the previous night, Weezer’s second engagement was a nod to die-hard Weezer fans. The set included some rarities like 1995’s “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly” and “Susanne.” Band members shared vocal duties throughout the set — guitarist Brian Bell took over on “Pork and Beans” and bassist Scott Shriner on “Dope Nose.” And as he did the night before, drummer Pat Wilson donned a guitar during the first part of the set, with drummer Josh Freese taking over percussion duties. The fans also took part in the action. Rivers invited a trio of fans decked out in homemade Weezer Ts onstage for the rest of the audience to see. At another point, Rivers spotted a fan waving a homemade W flag and invited him onstage. They stretched it out for all to see, and Rivers then displayed it on the drum riser. When he wasn’t inviting fans onstage, Rivers Cuomo was running through the audience, high-fiving fans and climbing on theater seats. No one was left untouched — not even the venue staff. During “Hash Pipe,” Cuomo yanked a beanie off a petite female staffer, plopped it on his head for a bit, then stretched it out onto a beefy security guard’s dome. Intermission followed and Weezer’s unofficial fifth member, Karl Koch, helmed a slide show (just like on the first night), showing off gems from Weezer’s early days. The crowd swooned at the sight of one of Weezer’s first fliers from 1992, a photo of the band with Spike Jonze during the Pinkerton recordings, and also shared a collective laugh at a Rolling Stone magazine clipping that declared Pinkerton the second-worst album of 1996 (just behind Bush’s Razorblade Suitcase ). When it was time for the Pinkerton set, the album’s cover art hung in the background, Pat returned to his drum kit and Rivers returned sans glasses (and not looking much different than he did during his Pinkerton days). The band ripped through the album’s 10 songs, garnering even more sing-alongs than the previous night. Those in attendance were definitely a dedicated bunch. The feeling was mutual. On “El Scorcho,” Brian gestured to the crowd during the lyrics “I’m a lot like you,” summing up the sentiment of the night. As the rest of the band left the stage, Rivers closed out the show with his acoustic guitar on “Butterfly” (and Karl took a stab at drumming). As the song concluded, Rivers took one simple bow and exited the stage — capping off a splendid two-night engagement of the Memories Tour. Related Artists Weezer

Nicki Minaj Fans Swarm New York MAC Store For Glimpse Of Their ‘Idol’

‘She is so different and inventive,’ one die-hard says of Pink Friday MC. By James Kuo Nicki Minaj arrives at the MAC cosmetics store in Times Square on Tuesday Photo: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images NEW YORK — Nicki Minaj took New York City by storm Tuesday (November 23) while promoting her debut album, Pink Friday. Her first stop was the Times Square MAC Cosmetics store, where she talked about her special edition Pink Friday MAC lipstick. Her fans — known as Barbiez — eagerly awaited her appearance. Jasmine Taylor, 23, was “super excited” to see Nicki. “She is my idol. I live for her. I’m, like, shaking right now,” said Jasmine, who sported a Nicki Minaj haircut and a glittering “Barbie” necklace. “She keeps it real and is so personable. The guys give her respect because of her lyrics.” Kelly Baker, a student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, wasn’t dressed like Nicki, but she was just as big a fan. What draws Kelly to Nicki is how she is not like any other artist. “She is really different and the only person who I can think of that is like her is — I don’t know. I think she is so different and inventive.” Eric Cruz, 23, loves her so much that he wanted her to sign his neck so he could get it tattooed on him permanently. All her fans came armed with the new Pink Friday album, hoping to get their copy signed. Tishae Lauren from the Bronx had to go to three different stores until she finally found a few lingering copies at Walmart — which she promptly bought up. All the Barbiez in the crowd thought Nicki would outsell Kanye West and My Chemical Romance, who also dropped new albums Monday. “I think Pink Friday will do good because everybody loves Nicki. She’s the sh–,” Anthony Pecheco insisted. Her fans are also excited about her upcoming documentary, “My Time Now,” which premieres Sunday, November 28, on MTV. “I’m excited because we always see her as a cartoon character,” Tishae said. “Finally, we get to see her more serious side.” Nicki also drew one fan all the way from Rome. Mario Petroccione came to New York just to see his favorite female MC. “She’s huge, and I love her,” he said. “She never comes to Italy, so that’s why I come to New York to see her.” When asked what it was about Nicki that got him to fly all the way from Rome, Mario replied, “She’s just lovely.” Did you rush out to the store to get Pink Friday ? Christina Aguilera And Cam Gigandet Talk Sexy ‘Burlesque’ Wardrobe

While Xtina squeezed into ‘push-up bras, high heels and fishnet stockings,’ Gigandet wore …a cookie box? By Brianne Riviello, with reporting by Kara Warner Cam Gigandet Photo: MTV News Fresh off Christina Aguilera’s saucy song-and-dance number at the American Music Awards on Sunday, many are sweating out the release of her new film, “Burlesque,” which hits theaters Wednesday. “Burlesque” follows a small-town girl (Aguilera) who journeys to the city looking for her big break but instead finds herself in the sensual world of burlesque. Aguilera makes her feature debut alongside the legendary Cher and a beautiful and talented supporting cast that includes Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough and Eric Dane. We recently caught up with the stars of the film, who giggled as they recalled their unique wardrobe racks for the suggestive-yet-sweet musical. Gigandet joked that, unlike the women in the film who were clad in elaborate bustiers and stockings, his wardrobe included “cookie boxes and pajamas.” (In one very memorable scene, Gigandet parades around with nothing but a Famous Amos box covering his nether regions.) Aguilera lamented that he got off easy: “You didn’t have to do any push-up bras, any high heels, any fishnet stockings.” Aguilera did reveal a few makeup secrets, however, and reported that Gigandet donned eyeliner for his part as Jack, the love interest to Aguilera’s Ali. Gigandet took it all in stride. “It was fun to be something different,” he said. “Yes, it was. I gotta say, it made my job easier to kind of, you know, step into a different character, into a different world.” On a side note, Gigandet also commented on how the legion of fans from his stint in the “Twilight” series has followed him, as compared to other roles — particularly as martial-arts champion Ryan McCarthy in 2008’s “Never Back Down.” “It varies, where I am,” he said, regarding whether he’s still bombarded by Twilighters wherever he goes. “I mean, you know, when I was in New Orleans and Louisiana a few months ago, it was ‘Never Back Down’ that caught everyone’s attention. I know, I love it. But there’s ‘Twilight’ fans all over the world.” Aguilera noted that, once “Burlesque” hits theaters, it will be Gigandet’s character Jack who will get all the buzz from fans. “Of course,” Gigandet laughed. “Then I’ll be ‘Famous Amos cookies’ for the rest of my life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: Phaedra Drops the Load!

With that, we welcome readers to our intern’s latest review of The Real Housewives of Atlanta and hope you’re prepared for another adventure into the world of Phaedra, Kandi and company… I knew this week’s episode would be a doozy when it started out with Apollo asking Phaedra if she’s “ready to drop the load” in reference to her giving birth.

Ke$ha’s Cannibal: A Cheat Sheet

Singer has already scored a hit with new single ‘We R Who We R.’ By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ Getty Images It’s been a pretty phenomenal year for Ke$ha. The brash, glitter-loving club kid burst onto the scene in January with her debut album, Animal, hot on the heels of the smash debut single “Tik Tok.” In short order, she ended the chart run of Susan Boyle when Animal debuted at #1 , made her first trip to the Grammy Awards , teamed up with pals 3OH!3 for another hit video with “Blah Blah Blah,” dropped in on “American Idol” and hit the road with Rihanna . And that’s just the first three months of the year! But after scoring another hit with “Your Love Is My Drug” and flipping the bird to haters over their critiques of her wobbly debut on “Saturday Night Live,” Ke$ha unleashed another single, “Take It Off.” For a minute, there was talk of a follow-up album that might have a country twang , not out of the question considering that she’s a Nashville native and her mom penned songs for Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. But as she said at the time, “I’m also really digging being called, like, half-jokingly, a white-girl rapper. I think it’s really funny, and I’m going to ride that train for a little bit.” By August, she was already plotting her next move, telling MTV News , “I’m always writing and kind of thinking of the next step. I’m still executing this record properly onstage, but the next record is definitely on my mind, and potentially in the works soon.” She described waking up in Tokyo at 4 in the morning with a brainstorm for a new song and then spending seven hours making a “horrible” beat on “Garage Band” and singing and rapping into her computer. A short time later, it was announced that her nine-song follow-up, Cannibal, would hit stores November 22 as a “companion” album to a reissue of Animal. The disc was reported to contain eight new songs produced by heavy-hitters like Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Bangladesh and to be preceded by “We R Who We R.” “This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime,” Ke$ha said in a statement. “My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It’s the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don’t like it — bite me.” Though a rumored hookup with Drake was false, a confirmed track list proved to have plenty of profane and silly titles, including (ahem) “C U Next Tuesday,” “Sleazy,” “Blow,” “The Harold Song,” “Cannibal,” “We R,” “Crazy Beautiful Life” and “Grow a Pear,” plus a remix of “Animal.” After winning an MTV EMA for Best New Act , the singer also locked in her first headlining affair, the Get $leazy Tour , which is slated to kick off February 15 in Portland, Oregon. Like most major new albums, Cannibal leaked online a week before it hit shelves, perhaps the finest proof yet that Ke$ha has truly hit the big time. Only this time, after most of the songs had hit the Web, Ke$ha just posted the damn thing herself on her website and told her fans to enjoy. “This is my album premiere, and it’s top secret, and it’s really fun and it’s wild,” Ke$ha said in a message posted on her site. “Things are going to get crazy and a little awkward, it’ll be okay. Listen to it.” She’s going to have plenty of major competition on the charts this week with new releases from Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and My Chemical Romance , but something tells us Ke$ha isn’t that worried. Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Nicki Minaj Calls Her AMA Dress ‘The Epitome Of Pink Friday’

If her out-there outfit could talk, the Young Money MC tells MTV News it would say, ‘I am such a diva bitch.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Tim Kash Nicki Minaj arrives at the 2010 American Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ AMA2010/ Getty Images The dress Nicki Minaj wore to the 2010 American Music Awards was as manic as the female MC’s music. Kanye West, Nicki Minaj And Ke$ha Lead Huge Album-Release Week

My Chemical Romance also moved their album to Monday to get a jump on the holidays. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: MJ Kim/ Getty Images It happens every year around this time. No, not that food coma from too much turkey — the parade of megastar albums that drops the week of Thanksgiving. While the past two weeks have already seen the release of a number of potential blockbusters, from Taylor Swift’s instant-platinum Speak Now to new albums from Susan Boyle, Kid Rock, Rihanna, Josh Groban and Rascal Flatts, Monday’s bumper crop could help pump some life into the holiday season. After Kanye West decided to stake out the off-cycle Monday as the release date for his eagerly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, his competitors fell in line to take advantage of the holiday-week sales rush, with Nicki Minaj, My Chemical Romance and Ke$ha pushing their release dates up one day as well. “I think Kanye will do great,” said Carl Mello, director of purchasing for the 28-store Newbury Comics chain, one of the few remaining non-big-box music retailers in the nation. “He did himself a lot of favors putting up so many tracks during the year and engaging with the audience.” Between the string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases and his headline-grabbing “Runaway” mini-movie , Mello said Kanye set the album up by whetting his audience’s appetite for months on end. As for Nicki’s Pink Friday, even though she spent the year building up cred with a series of features and her own hit “Your Love,” Mello predicted she’d do “fine” but wasn’t expecting her to put up Kanye numbers. “It’s nice to have a female rapper who is credible and has a chance at being quite popular,” he said. The bigger challenge might come for My Chem, whose Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys has gotten good buzz thanks to the speedy single “Na Na Na,” but they have been out of stores since 2006’s The Black Parade, which divided some fans. “There’s almost nothing harder to sell than something that reacted well with 13- to 14-year-olds a few years ago, but who don’t necessarily make the journey with the band over the years,” he said, noting the dive in popularity of similar bands such as Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte. And though first-week sales of Rihanna’s Loud are not expected to be blockbuster, Mello also said he expects that album and Kid Rock’s Born Free to be solid sellers through the end of the year, along with Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, as well as Swift and previously released discs by Eminem and Lil Wayne. Billboard magazine Senior Chart Manager and analyst Keith Caulfield agrees that West will probably have the biggest sales week, but said Ne-Yo could also have a solid bow with Libra Scale after months of working singles to radio. While he thinks Nicki could have a good week, Caulfield was cautious about Ke$ha’s Cannibal. “She could also do well, but because she’s so track-oriented, it’s hard to say,” he said. “The best comparison for Nicki would seem to be Missy Elliott at her height with Under Construction, which sold 259,000 in its first week, and that’s when people bought a lot of records. It’s hard to gauge how an artist who, up until this point, has been very track-oriented but has an established record for a long time before releasing a proper album will do.” He pointed to fellow Young Money rapper Drake, who built his career up for nearly a year with a popular mixtape and features before releasing a full-length debut. “She’s very different. She’s colorful and versatile, but it’s hard to pinpoint how that will translate into sales,” he said, noting that “Your Love” has sold a very respectable 700,000 downloads to date. Also in the mix are greatest-hits releases from Jay-Z and Pink; Lloyd Banks’ H.F.M.2 ; the reissue of Nine Inch Nails’ debut, Pretty Hate Machine ; a Jimi Hendrix box set that Mello said is doing very well at his stores; Bruce Springsteen’s The Promise archival set; the “Burlesque” soundtrack; and next Friday, a Target exclusive acoustic set from Justin Bieber. And the hits will keep coming through the holidays, with a Christmas-themed “Glee” soundtrack on November 30 — which will also bring the latest from the Black Eyed Peas, The Beginning — followed the next week by T.I.’s No Mercy. December 14 brings the last potential blockbuster of 2010, the first posthumous album of Michael Jackson material, Michael, as well as the major-label debut of “American Idol” season-nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox, Farmer’s Daughter ; R. Kelly’s Love Letter ; and Ciara’s Basic Instinct. (All release dates subject to change.) Which new release are you looking forward to the most? Let us know in the comments!
