2010 VMAs: Lady Gaga Scores, Taylor Swift And Kanye West Vent

Performances from Justin Bieber, Eminem/Rihanna and others also steal the show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With 13 nominations, there was no way Lady Gaga was going home empty-handed at Sunday night’s (September 12) MTV Video Music Awards . And when the international pop/fashion icon stepped up to accept her sixth award of the night, for Video of the Year, she did what she always does: broke off a piece for her legion of fans by teasing the name of her upcoming album. On a night when Kanye West seemingly came all the way back from music jail with yet another eye-popping performance that put most (or at least some) of last year’s stage-crashing antics to rest, Taylor Swift appeared to answer Kanye’s bum-rush with some lyrical barbs of her own, and everyone from Justin Bieber and B.o.B to Drake and Nicki Minaj made their VMA debuts. In the end, though, the night belonged to Mother Monster. Gaga got the night started early with a pre-show win for Best Dance Video for “Bad Romance” and Best Collaboration for “Telephone” with Beyonc

Nicki Minaj Makes Colorful Entrance On VMA Pre-Show

Spacesuit-clad Young Money honey performs ‘Your Love,’ ‘Check It Out’ with will.i.am in solo TV debut. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj performs during the 2010 VMA pre-show Photo: MTV News When you’re making a live solo performance debut on TV, you have to make it count. And Young Money honey Nicki Minaj is not one to pull up short . Which explains why she poured herself into a pink-and-purple spacesuit topped by a cotton candy-colored wig for the MTV VMA pre-show run of her new single, “Check it Out.” Accompanied by two dancers in matching outfits, Nicki stood stock still like a futuristic superhero for the song’s intro, then began to wiggle her world-famous hips over the song’s sample of the iconic MTV launch-pad tune “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Tossing in some high kicks and plenty of looks at her ample assets, Minaj held onto a railing ringing the stage and shook it slow as guest will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas strutted out to drop his verse. Dressed like a bondage cartoon character from the phantom zone, Will kicked it in a skin-hugging black leather suit with a Devo-like plastic high-top fade and white shades, pulsing back and forth alongside Minaj as the crowd shouted out their approval. “Dummies can’t touch me ’cause I’m floatin’ sky-high,” he rapped, as Nicki wore a sneer on her face and dropped into a double-time island patois with her hand on her hips. “The DunDun/ Yep, in London,” she rapped, shaking her head. “Competition/ Why yes I would love some.” But by the time she ended with a grimace frozen on her face, it was clear that Minaj had blown away any and all comers and set the stage for the night of unforgettable performances to come. America… Yet!

I remember the special feeling that came over me as I watched a very special women's gymnastic team. They were the 1996 Olympic champions from America. They had come from a very special land that was different in many ways. Such a land must be special in that anyone can possess an opportunity to plant the seeds of their potential and bring to harvest that talent into the realm of an appreciative humanity. Their faces could only have come from America. I was so very proud for my country that all of these people had been given a chance to demonstrate that they could be a team, and that they could grow together to become winners under our flag. ***************************************************************************************************** I also recall a man named Martin Luther King who in one day, the day that did go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation, had this to say: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today! **************************************************************************************************** I recall the eyes of my own mother, who I did not regard as the greatest champion of the civil rights movement. As a small child I had asked her about the KKK, and in her response I could see the tears well up in her eyes as she described to me the racist acts that had gone on for many years. She described to me how some people had received unjust punishments, and that there had been a procession of targets through they years. They were the Irish-Americans, the were the Jewish-Americans, they were the blacks, and the browns, and the peoples of all colors and races and religions and previous homelands. For me, when I see our proud flag, I see the country that has overcome more and more of its problems and has progressed to a nation that stands for this freedom without reservation for color of skin, or religion we were born under. What matters today is that we stand united and true, with the love of freedom and the love of standing united. Still today there are American people who must be given only the back rows and catch freedom as it becomes available to them. When it comes to Ground Zero they must worship God from a distance. Their holy books are burned and it is debated whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. I was reminded yesterday, that some of America is not truly allowed to become theirs as well as ours even though our own rhetoric expresses that as much it should. When one can advance political gain by denying those rights, greed takes over, the usual forces of division are applied, and the minority loses its right to become fully free Americans. The rest of America sleeps while rights disappear, and acts of offense are questioned, but the questions are turned away. Should all of America be allowed into our hearts without regard for where they come? I am reminded of my own experience. I had once asked the Democratic National Convention if this band that I knew could be considered for their convention. I provided them with links. This band could present to America the lighter, brighter side of the world in which Barack Obama once lived. They hailed from a city that neighbors Jakarta where Barack Obama had gone to school. The DNC seemed pleased and replied optimistically to me. I forwarded that response to the band, and they responded optimistically, wanting to know more. I asked later, in one liberal forum, when they were not called, and a reply came to me that this band was not American, and did not deserve to be in the Denver show. The responder failed to notice that Bono and Shakira were given invitations and did appear. It became painfully obvious here, that Bono and Shakira had entered their hearts as Americans and given special status because the media would allow it. People from Muslim countries could not gain this status because… well… they could not become Americans in their heart, or the hearts of the people. VERBOTEN! Is this America yet? I know that America is just beginning, and the ideals, and the hopes, and the values will spread to other lands when the world looks to America and can see the real thing. I still believe we are dawning, but now is the time to look and see the sun rising over the horizon. I have a dream that all God's children will one day live in nations where they will be judged by the content of their character. I love America. This is our time to let it dawn. added by: thedirtman

Nicki Minaj Debuts Some Dance Moves In VMA Rehearsal

‘Making the Band’ choreographer backs up Young Money queen for pre-show performance. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj at her VMA pre-show rehearsal on Saturday Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News LOS ANGELES — Nicki Minaj is so popular right now she can shut down the scene anywhere she goes. On Saturday (September 11), her fans who happened to be downtown got a big surprise as Nick rehearsed her VMA pre-show performance , practicing “Your Love” and her brand-new single with Will I Am, “Check It Out.” Although Nicki’s performance was outside, fans, members of her entourage, various MTV crewmembers and anyone sitting in one of the J.W. Marriott hotel’s lounges could see Nick go to work. “Get it! Get it!” veteran choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson — who MTV viewers will remember from Diddy’s “Making the Band” — yelled after every Minaj “ow ow!” at the beginning of “Check It Out.” “Get it, girl!” Gibson encouraged again. Two female dancers started in front of the crowd and grooved to “Your Love,” then there was a reveal of the Young Money queen, who stood with her head down and arms folded. Wearing a pink tank top, black leather jacket and black leggings, Minaj moved forward and danced in sync with her backup ladies. Expect plenty of movement and plenty of energy come Sunday night. Nicki — who’s known for her lyrical acumen and facial expressions (she made those faces in rehearsal too!), but not for dancing — can hold down some steps. “Amaaaazing,” Gibson yelled at the end of another run-through. There were a few mechanical problems with a key piece of equipment for the stage that’s also an integral part of Nick’s reveal. However, the crew seemed to have the matter under control toward the end of rehearsal. During her last practice round, Nicki and her dancers switched up the entire beginning of the show. Instead of just playing “Your Love,” Nicki went right into “Check It Out.” There was also smoke that time and more applause from Nick’s biggest cheerleader today, Laurie Ann. After the rehearsal, Nicki walked through the lobby taking pictures and even giving a couple of hugs to fans. “Oh my God. She is so real!” one lady said after taking a pic with Nicki. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Florence And The Machine Promise Flowers, Explosions For VMAs

Florence Welch she’ll try to re-create the ‘chaos’ of her ‘Dog Days Are Over’ video this Sunday. By James Montgomery Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch and MTV News’ James Montgomery Photo: MTV News On Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards , multiple nominees Florence and the Machine will take the stage for their biggest U.S. performance to date. It’s a huge opportunity for the U.K.-based critical darlings, who are only just starting their push here in the states. So just what can VMA viewers expect? Well, from what we can gather, there will definitely be machinery of some sort. And perhaps explosions too. Oh, and maybe even some floral arranging? Machine mastermind Florence Welch wasn’t about to reveal all the band’s secret plans for Sunday night, but she did let MTV News in on a few bits of information. “The machine for the actual show is something kind of different — the machine is never supposed to be the band. … It’s kind of everything and nothing; I can’t explain it,” she smiled. “But for the performance it’s going to be something quite … I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s going to be big.” Welch also confirmed that the Machine will be performing their much-nominated “Dog Days Are Over” (which is up for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year), and that their VMA setup will match the kinetic feel of the clip. Within reason, of course. “What we’re trying to do is kind of encapsulate the video into a live performance,” Welch said. “There’s a lot of different characters in the video, and so I’m going to be trying to bring some of that. It’s just about the energy of the song, for me. It’s sort of energy and chaos. There’s people, like, actually physically exploding in the video, and hopefully that won’t happen. If everyone’s really into it, that’s fine with me, but we haven’t planned it.” Sounds like things may get messy on Sunday night. But explosions aren’t the only thing Welch is promising during the show. In a nod to her live sets (where she covers her mic stand in bouquets), she’s also going to adorn the VMA stage in flowers. We think. “Basically, the whole thing is just me arranging flowers, and then a load of people around me spontaneous combust, and that it’s it,” Welch laughed. “It’s going to be great.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Spencer Pratt Offers Heidi Montag ‘Most Sincere Apologies’

‘I horribly embarrassed the one person that meant the world to me,’ reality star admits. By James Dinh Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag Photo: Marcel Thomas/ Getty Images From the sex tape threats to Twitter blows, it’s clear Spencer Pratt has grown an incredibly large distaste for Heidi Montag . But now it seems as if the reality star has had a change of heart and issued an apology to his soon-to-be-ex-wife. “Divorce can be a trying, draining, and emotionally devastating experience for all involved,” he admitted to People magazine. “Despite these hardships, most individuals manage to conduct themselves with dignity and maturity. I did not — I failed spectacularly.” The 27-year-old feels most sorry for his recent antics directed at Montag, saying, “I horribly embarrassed the one person that meant the world to me. For my outrageous and infantile behavior, I offer Heidi my most sincere apologies.” The reality star, who just a few weeks ago threatened to leak Montag’s alleged sex tape , says that he hopes one day his former “Hills” co-star will find it in her heart to forgive him. “Over the years, her love, support, and friendship were always given, but never properly cherished. I let her down,” he revealed. “She never deserved the pain and anguish I put her through, and although I don’t expect it, I hope in time she’ll be able to forgive me.” While Speidi seem to be no more, the reality star said that he will always hold a place in his heart for the starlet. “Even though our relationship has changed, I will always count her among my best friends,” he said. In June, Montag added her two cents on the couple’s divorce, saying, “Spencer and I are finally moving forward with our lives, but with any divorce, there is much to work through. We’ve been together almost five years — there are assets to divide, work to be discussed, and we share our puppies.” Pratt is not only apologizing to Montag but also to the sparing few fans he has. “I need to apologize to Heidi and my 11.5 fans. I’m an epic douche — and you deserve better,” he tweeted Wednesday. How exactly is Pratt going to make amends for his actions and see the light? The star says he is planning “intense soul-searching” and going forward with the “appropriate avenues for my issues” in order to turn his life around. Justin Bieber Activity Drives Three Percent Of Twitter Traffic

‘Racks of servers are dedicated to him,’ says Dustin Curtis, designer who works for Twitter. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage There are any number of ways to measure just how deeply Justin Bieber has impacted American society: from platinum record sales to sold-out shows packed with screaming fans to the popularity of the singer’s signature brush-down bowl haircut. But on Tuesday, a designer at Twitter put Bieb’s influence in a thoroughly modern context. “At any moment, Justin Bieber uses 3 percent of our infrastructure. Racks of servers are dedicated to him,” tweeted Dustin Curtis, a designer who works at the micro-blogging service. That tidbit should come as no surprise, since Bieber — slated to perform at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards — has more than 5 million followers and is an almost daily trending topic on the 140-character-limit service. He also noted that there are three things that reliably drive traffic at Twitter: “(a) bashing airlines, (b) bashing Comic Sans, (c) Justin Bieber.” Tech blog Gizmodo reported that Curtis confirmed his tweet was no joke and that he got that information directly from another Twitter employee. The blog noted that even though Bieber is often a trending topic, given the fact that Twitter has 180 million unique visitors a month, his 3 percent land grab is still pretty impressive. Curtis later tweeted that “most of the popular users on Twitter have dedicated servers for their accounts,” which The Hollywood Reporter took to mean that stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian, each with more than four million followers, likely have their own racks as well. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. ‘Eclipse’ Will Be Re-Released On Friday To Celebrate Bella’s Birthday

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ will hit theaters again on September 10. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Didn’t get a chance to see “Eclipse” in theaters the first time around? No problem! The movie will be re-released this Friday (September 10). Summit is releasing the flick to the cinemas again in honor of Bella’s birthday, which is on September 13. “Bella Swan’s birthday is on September 13! What are you doing to celebrate?” a message on “The Twilight Saga” official Facebook page reads. “In celebration of Bella’s birthday, ECLIPSE will be re-released in theatres nationwide this Friday! It’s your last chance to see it on the big screen with your friends.” The film, the third installment in the “Twilight Saga,” was originally released last June. It follows the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob as they fend off a group of vampires, led by Victoria, who would like to see Bella out of the picture. In addition to fending off evil vamps, Bella must decide if she wants to stay human and possibly be in a relationship with werewolf Jacob or turn vampire in order to be with her true love, Edward, a choice that Jacob hopes she doesn’t make. “The love triangle is real,” Stewart said of the power struggle back in June, just as the film was hitting theaters. “In [ ‘Eclipse’ ], she is just older and a little bit more [wise]. Now you really believe her. It took a while for her to know herself well enough to make a decision.” After the “Twilight” actors wrap up other projects they are working on, they will head back to the set to film the last two movies in the series, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two , expected for release in 2011 and 2012 respectively. “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon will helm the final film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling books. Dallas Pastor Defends Claim That Islam ‘Promotes Pedophilia’

Prominent Pastor Robert Jeffress of the First Baptist Church of Dallas gave a sermon a few weeks ago saying, among other things: “The deep, dark, dirty secret of Islam: It is a religion that promotes pedophilia – sex with children. This so-called prophet Muhammad raped a 9-year-old girl – had sex with her.” Now Jeffress has doubled down on his claim in a sermon on Sunday, responding to a column by Steve Blow in The Dallas Morning News that condemned the pastor's remarks. “It is our love for Muslims that demands we speak the truth about Islam,” Jeffress said Sunday. Here's what happened: First Baptist's Sunday evening service on August 22 featured an “Ask the Pastor” segment, in which Jeffress called Islam “oppressive” and violent.” He also said that “around the world today, you have Muslim men having sex with 4-year-old girls, taking them as their brides, because they believe the prophet Muhammad did it.” “I believe,” Jeffress added, “as Christians and conservatives, it's time to take off the gloves and stand up and tell the truth about this evil, evil religion.” added by: TimALoftis
