Sh*it’s been dark on Mad Men these past few weeks, man. Becoming a sloppy, vomiting drunk, seeing his daughter branded a sexual deviant, losing his one solid lifeline to cancer and nearly becoming another notch in Duck Phillips’ Okinawan kill list, Don Draper has really been through the wringer. But fortunately, Ida Blankenship, his be-wigged secretary played by Randee Heller, has been able to inject a little levity to the grim goings-on.

Am I the only one who finds the strength to get out of bed every morning simply because Mrs. LaRusso from The Karate Kid is back in our lives? Randee Heller — who played Daniel’s mom in the ’80s classic and can currently be seen as Don Draper’s new office-affair-repellent-and-racist secretary, Ms. Blankenship, on Mad Men — spoke to Vulture today and revealed (to the delight of Karate Kid fans the world over) that she’s still in contact with her former screen son, Ralph Macchio. “We’ve been hooking up over e-mails and texting each other ever since the Karate Kid remake,” she said. “[I]t’s always, ‘Hi, mom!’ He calls me mom.” Aw. Damn you, Matthew Weiner: Always making me work on a holiday. It’s an apt metaphor for Sunday night’s Mad Men , however. I suppose he’d greet my complaint with some paraphrase of Don’s afterhours reality check to birthday girl Peggy — “You’re 30-something years old; it’s time to get over Labor Day” — before insisting I hunker down and bring ides for the year’s seventh episode. And here I am! It worked.
