Alas, Titanic 3D Proves Just as Unnecessary as You Thought

I wanted to believe James Cameron &mdash I really did! &mdash but it turns out that the 3-D conversion of his megahit Titanic is not only the craven cash grab we all feared, but it’s also a visually drab re-rendering of an otherwise extraordinary technical achievement. Womp wooomp . Paramount and Fox reportedly hosted a few dozen sold-out Valentine’s Day previews of the film, to which press elites like Roger Ebert and David Poland were invited for their reactions. (My invitation must have been lost in the mail, but hey, I had a hot date with Linsanity that night anyway.) And how about those reactions! First Ebert , who gives Titanic a thorough and conscientious second-over before getting to the takeaway we’re all waiting for: Cameron has justly been praised for being one of the few directors to use 3D usefully, in Avatar . But Titanic was not shot for 3D, and just as you cannot gild a pig, you cannot make 2D into 3D. There’s more to it than that. 3D causes a noticeable loss in the brightness coming from the screen. Some say as much as 20 percent. If you saw an ordinary film dimmed that much, you might complain to the management. Here you’re supposed to be grateful you had the opportunity to pay a surcharge for this defacement. If you’re alert to it, you’ll notice that many shots and sequences in this version are not in 3D at all, but remain in 2D. If you take off your glasses, they’ll pop off the screen with dramatically improved brightness. I know why the film is in 3D. It’s to justify the extra charge. That’s a shabby way to treat a masterpiece. ” Welllll ,” the skeptic says, “Ebert’s never liked 3-D.” Fair enough! So — take it away, Mr. Poland : I was happy that when we got to the theater, it turned out not to be IMAX 3D. Those glasses are ridiculous and I have only had one or two happy experiences with that specific format. (I quite like IMAX and don’t always dislike 3D.) So I didn’t get irritated by having the glasses on as we watched the hours of film roll by. However… I found myself wanting to take the glasses off repeatedly. And here is why: it’s like watching the movie through a filter. Call it darkness, call it clarity… call it what you like. But for me, especially on Titanic , the slight facial fur and occasional acne under the make-up on Kate Winslet and the small pock marks on Leonardo DiCaprio’s face are a part of the intimacy of the movie. The movie takes such painstaking efforts to get every detail right… I want to see them, including the imperfections. And with those glasses on, I could not. Some might be happy not to see detail… to have the image smoothed out even more. But not me. These people are beautiful. Their imperfections are beautiful. Anyway, this will make a fortune and quite possibly be your next reason for never going to the movies again , so… yeah. Mark your calendars . Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Black Keys’ ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Video Keeps It Simple

‘Lonely Boy’ follow-up is light on bells and whistles, heavy on what made them the sensation they are today: killer live sets. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach in “Gold on the Ceiling” Photo: Warner Bros. There are no dancing actors/security guards , precocious street-fighting children or cameos by “Sir” Todd Bridges in the Black Keys’ new “Gold on the Ceiling” video . But don’t let their absences sway you — in a lot of ways, this was the video the Keys were born to make. The clip, which premiered Monday night (February 6) on MTV, features only the Black Keys (and various members of their road team) doing what they do best: playing live, in gloriously gritty fashion. It’s not only a nod to their roots — for close to a decade, they hammered out gigs (and miles) aboard a rusty van — but it’s a powerful reminder to their detractors that they are, first and foremost, a positively killer live act. Of course, it was also probably a matter of necessity. The Black Keys are rather busy these days, what with their smash album and world tour, so shooting a live video (in part during their MTV Hive-sponsored El Camino release party at New York’s Webster Hall) undoubtedly made their management happy, but you get the feeling that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney probably delighted in making a concert clip. After all, it fits rather nicely with their anachronistic ways. Of all the monster rock acts currently lumbering, the Black Keys seem the most natural fit for a live video. No bells or whistles, no special effects, just a band, a stage and some grainy footage. It’s easy. So while “Gold” may be lacking in all those things (not to mention odd, inbox-baiting cameos), it is by no means a lesser video. If anything, it represents everything that makes the Black Keys the band they are — hard-charging, unpolished and seemingly not-of-this-era, indebted to their past yet still pushing forward and always determined to do things on their own terms. Big-selling album and high-profile second single be damned, the Black Keys just want to do it live and do it loud. It’s what got them here, after all. What did you think of the Keys’ latest video? Britney Spears: Photoshopped Into V Pics?

In the upcoming issue of V Magazine, Britney Spears discusses her management team, calling them ” her second family ,” and poses for photos with them. Well, the second part of that is up for debate. The images have attracted considerable scrutiny, with some remarking on how quickly Spears seems to have slimmed down for this particular shoot. “She has clearly been working out regularly in an effort to achieve such a healthy, lean look,” the Daily Mail (UK) notes judiciously . Fans were less PC. “Photoshopped a dillion! That’s her head on someone else’s body,” remarked one fan site. “Even Ray Charles can see the terrible ‘Cut and Paste’ job.” Weight-wise, it’s not like Britney has been letting herself go lately. In fact, she’s thinner at the end of her recent tour than she has been in months. The Britney Spears photos do look weird though. The lighting is off and her body seems to glow almost unnaturally. Are they posing with a Britney cardboard cutout? Or is that really Brit’s face on someone else’s body? If V did alter the images, why bother??! So many questions here. You tell us: Is Britney Photoshopped in these pics?

Soulja Boy Sues Manager Over "Unjust" Contracts

Soulja Boy claims he was taken advantage of as 16-year-old in 2007 by his ex-manager, who he feels exploited his naivete with unreasonable contracts. The rapper filed the documents in Georgia Superior Court, claiming his manager / lawyer Philip Ransom coerced him into signing multiple unjust deals . He calls the terms “unconscionable, oppressive, and unjust.” So what did he agree to that’s so oppressive, you ask? The contracts included a management deal that gave Ransom 5 percent of Soulja’s income … forever … relating to work completed under his management. Another contract allegedly gave 50 percent of all Soulja’s music copyrights to his record label,a deal the rapper now claims is

Lady Gaga And Cher Make ‘History’ On ‘Greatest Thing’

Producer RedOne tells MTV News how the Gaga track turned into one seriously epic duet. By Kara Warner Cher and Lady Gaga Photo: Picture Group For all the Lady Gaga and Cher fans out there who fainted at the news that two of pop music’s biggest stars have teamed up on a soon-to-be released record, your wait is almost over! Cher herself confirmed via Twitter back in August that we would hear “The Greatest Thing” sometime in September, and because the month is quickly coming to an end, we should only have a few more days to wait to hear the highly anticipated track. To hold you over until the release, MTV News recently caught up with RedOne, the producer mastermind behind the soon-to-be hit, to find out how the song came to be and why everyone will love it. “[Gaga and I] recorded the song a few years ago, and we were always in the studio enjoying that song. It’s weird we never did anything with it,” he said. “So I remember my management and Cher’s management were trying to get us together, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’d love to meet Cher, just to meet her!’ And so I met her, I played her some songs, and I played her ‘The Greatest Thing,’ and she loved it. She said, ‘This is my song,’ I said, ‘Yes, it’s your song.’ ” RedOne said he let Gaga know via text message, and she was ecstatic. Then, about a month later, Red received a text from Gaga that inspired an epic pairing. “I cut the vocals with Cher first, and I was in Madrid and got a text from Gaga saying, ‘I’m thinking about jumping on the song in the remix,’ ” he recalled. “I was like, ‘No, you should jump on the original! Make it a duet.’ She said, ‘Oh yes, OK, absolutely,’ and then I spoke to Cher, and it became a party. “Everybody loved it,” he added. “Gaga on it, Cher, two big icons, [they are] part of music history. So it happened. I’m very happy to be a part of this.” Of course, RedOne wouldn’t reveal when we’ll hear the track, only that it’s coming soon. What are you expecting from a Gaga/Cher duet?
