Rupert Everett Lambasts Hollywood, "Tasteless" Jennifer Aniston Movies

Actor Rupert Everett is not shy about expressing himself … or naming names if he’s bitter enough about who becomes a star and who doesn’t. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 about how homosexuals fare in Hollywood, the interview eventually turned to the question of audience perception. Rupert argued that no matter what fans may think, the industry decides who will become A-list. How else to you explain Jennifer Aniston?! The Switch? The Bounty Hunter?! Come on! “If you look and analyze the careers of many, many, many stars, you’ll find that they’re mostly sustained by the business,” he said. “I’m not going to start naming names of people whose films have not succeeded at the box office, but you’ll find lots of women and lots of men that the powers that be determine are right and they’ll stand with them for quite a long time.” “Jennifer Aniston will have so many absolute flops, but she’s still a member of that club, and like a star forming in the universe, things will swirl around her and it will suddenly solidify into another vital tasteless rom-com.” Oooookay … Rude? Bitter? You bet. Although The Switch , The Bounty Hunter, Love Happens and Management were pretty terrible, we’ll give him that. Marley & Me was a big hit, though, and Friends? One of the most popular shows in history. Plus, she married Brad Pitt and has that hair. In the end, you don’t have to be a professional critic to observe correctly that Jen has made some bad movies. But there is an audience. If they weren’t profitable, why would they continue to be made? Rom-coms may be tasteless, but they’re cheap to produce. Cha. Ching. Maybe she’s riding her past successes a bit these days, but does she really deserve to be singled out like this? Go get a life, Rupert! Just don’t even get near her .

California Says Yes To Molten Solar

The California Energy Commission has approved a permit for SolarReserve to build a 150-megawatt solar plant that uses molten salt to store energy, the company announced Wednesday. —The Santa Monica, Calif.-based start-up says its Rice Solar Energy Project will be located 30 miles from Blythe, Calif., and when running at full capacity will supply enough energy to power the equivalent of 68,000 homes annually. The project also has a 25-year power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). ==================== California Says Yes To Molten Solar December 16, 2010 9:44 AM PST by Candace Lombardi http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-20025870-54.html?part=rss&tag=feed&sub… —continued—- The molten salt system will enable the solar farm to store and release solar energy so that it can continue to generate electricity for up to eight hours after sunset, according to SolarReserve. Molten salt solar plants, which have been built in Spain by SolarReserve with additional molten solar projects underway in Nevada and Sicily, work by using molten salt to retain and release heat energy. In the case of a molten salt solar plant, heliostats–giant rotating mirrors controlled by computers to best track and reflect sun onto a specific point–reflect sun rays onto a central tower, or a series of pipes, containing a molten salt mixture. The molten salt generally consists of sodium nitrates and potassium. The solar rays heat the liquefied salt to a temperature of up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam from the molten salt is then harnessed to power a generator that makes electricity. Afterward, the cooled molten salt is then piped back to the tower to be heated once again. In the case of the proposed Rice Solar Energy Project, the heliostats will be directed to a large central tower using a molten salt system developed by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. The company received more than $10 million to develop more efficient molten-salt systems, as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) project sponsoring 13 companies with funds. However, this latest California board approval does not mean this project is full steam ahead. The Rice Solar Energy Project still needs to receive approvals from both the Bureau of Land Management and the Western Area Power Administration, according to SolarReserve. added by: twohawks

New Advice for Nuclear Strike – Don’t Flee, Get Inside U.S. Rethinks Strategy for the Unthinkable By WILLIAM J. BROAD Suppose the unthinkable happened, and terrorists struck New York or another big city with an atom bomb. What should people there do? The government has a surprising new message: Do not flee. Get inside any stable building and don’t come out till officials say it’s safe. The advice is based on recent scientific analyses showing that a nuclear attack is much more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from the lethal radiation that follows a blast, a simple tactic seen as saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Even staying in a car, the studies show, would reduce casualties by more than 50 percent; hunkering down in a basement would be better by far. But a problem for the Obama administration is how to spread the word without seeming alarmist about a subject that few politicians care to consider, let alone discuss. So officials are proceeding gingerly in a campaign to educate the public. “We have to get past the mental block that says it’s too terrible to think about,” W. Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said in an interview. “We have to be ready to deal with it” and help people learn how to “best protect themselves.” Officials say they are moving aggressively to conduct drills, prepare communication guides and raise awareness among emergency planners of how to educate the public. Over the years, Washington has sought to prevent nuclear terrorism and limit its harm, mainly by governmental means. It has spent tens of billions of dollars on everything from intelligence and securing nuclear materials to equipping local authorities with radiation detectors. The new wave is citizen preparedness. For people who survive the initial blast, the main advice is to fight the impulse to run and instead seek shelter from lethal radioactivity. Even a few hours of protection, officials say, can greatly increase survival rates. CBS News Poll: Most Oppose GOP Tax Plan

Republicans have argued that the midterm elections have given them a mandate on what they are calling one of the most important issues facing America, the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts. “The American people want us to stop all the looming tax hikes and to cut spending, and that should be the priority of the remaining days that we have in this Congress,” incoming House Speaker Rep. John Boehner said Thursday. Boehner added that a House vote Thursday to extend the cuts for all but the highest-earning Americans amounted to “chicken crap.” According to a new CBS News poll, however, Boehner is off-base in his claim that Americans “want us to stop all the looming tax hikes.” The poll finds that 53 percent of Americans want the Bush-era tax cuts extended only for households earning less than $250,000 per year. That roughly matches the proposal put forth by the White House, which wants to extend the cuts only for incomes less than $250,000 for families and $200,000 for individuals. Just 26 percent of Americans say they support extending the cuts for all Americans, even those earning above the $250,000 level, which is the GOP proposal. Another 14 percent of Americans say the cuts should expire for all Americans. The Treasury Department says the cost of making the cuts permanent for everyone is $3.7 trillion over a decade. The White House plan which would not extend the cuts on high earners would cost an estimated $3 trillion over ten years. (By point of contrast, the controversial deficit commission proposal released this week would save about $4 trillion in that time.) Seventy percent of Democrats want to extend the cuts only on incomes below $250,000, according to the CBS News poll. Forty-seven percent of independents and 41 percent of Republicans agree. Only ten percent of Democrats and one in four independents back the GOP proposal to extend the tax cuts for all. Even among Republicans, support for extending all the cuts is less than half at 46 percent. The Bush-era tax cuts are set to expire for all Americans by the end of the year, and lawmakers are working feverishly to reach compromise on the issue during the lame duck session. The Democrat-led House voted Thursday to extend them for those below then $200,000/$250,000 threshold, but the bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes it needs to break a GOP filibuster in the Senate. Following the House vote, Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California released a statement saying Democrats “just don't get it.” “Clearly, Congressional Democrats learned nothing from the lessons of November 2nd,” he said. “The American people had a clear choice between those that want to cut taxes for all Americans and those that want to raise them and they chose decisively. Instead of living up to the mandate set by the American people, Congressional Democrats have defied the will of the American people.” President Obama dispatched Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Jack Lew, to oversee negotiations on finding common ground on the issue earlier this week following a meeting with congressional leaders from both parties. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that “[t]he talks are ongoing and productive, but any reports that we are near a deal in the tax cuts negotiations are inaccurate and premature.” Republicans have suggested they are unwilling to compromise on the issue, and most political observers expect Democrats to agree to extend all the cuts temporarily. In exchange, Republicans could give ground on other Democratic priorities, such as ratification of the START arms treaty with Russia or an extension of unemployment benefits, which expired on Tuesday. added by: TimALoftis

Obama proposes two-year freeze in federal worker’s pay

Money to keep the fake war on terror going in the Middle East, but no money to patch up the deficit. *** President Obama today proposed a a two-year freeze in civilian federal worker pay for calendar year 2011-2012. “I did not reach this decision easily,” Obama said from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, “This is not just a line-item on a federal ledger. These are people's lives.” The freeze is expected to save $2 billion for the fiscal year 2011 and will save $28 billion when you combine the savings from this year’s freeze, and the second year freeze 2012 across the next 5 years. It is expected to save $60 billion in total over the next 10 years. “The hard truth is that getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifice,” Obama said, “and that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government.” added by: maasanova

Obama to propose two-year pay freeze for federal workers

WASHINGTON — President Obama will announce Monday morning that he wants to freeze pay for federal employees for the next two years, a move the administration says would save more than $5 billion between now and 2012. The freeze would not apply to military personnel but rather to all other civilian employees on the federal payroll. Congress would have to approve the proposal in order for it to take effect. The plan is part of Obama's effort to contain the $1.3 trillion federal deficit, and will be followed by more proposals for spending reductions over the next few months, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said Monday morning. The president's announcement lands as a pre-emptive strike on congressional Republicans, who are preparing a plan to slash federal pay and workforce next year. It comes in advance of a meeting between the Democratic president and GOP leaders at the White House on Tuesday. “Clearly, this is a difficult decision,” said Jeffrey Zients, Obama's chief performance officer and the Office of Management and Budget's deputy director for management. Federal employees are hard-working, he said, and “central to delivering services to the American people. We believe it's the first of many difficult steps ahead … to put our nation on sound fiscal footing.” In other steps aimed at reining in the deficit, Obama has previously frozen salaries for senior White House officials and proposed doing the same for all political appointees across the government. His administration is also working on scouring out what they call “excesses” in federal contracting and on reducing loss through improper payments. Obama has also directed federal agencies to dispose of excess real estate. The president's announcement will come this morning in remarks to the press at the executive office building next to the White House. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/sc-dc-1130-obama-freeze-web-20101… added by: iGoogle

Pusha T Says Cryptic ‘So Appalled’ Verse Is ‘Self-Explanatory’

Clipse MC opens up about apparent reference to incarcerated ex-manager on Kanye West track, on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Alvin Blanco Pusha T Photo: Sohyung Kang/MTV News Pusha T has been getting plenty of mainstream recognition lately thanks to his G.O.O.D. Music co-sign and standout guest appearances on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. When the younger half of Virginia rhyme duo the Clipse dropped by “Rap Fix Live” on Thursday, he opened up about trips to Hawaii to craft “Runaway” with ‘Ye , but he also talked about brother and rhyme partner Malice as well as his incarcerated former manager. “Everybody knows that we’ve been through the wringer as far as the whole music and the whole street situation,” Pusha said. “Our family, our management, our friends. I lost five of my closest friends in ’09; like 30 years, 15 years [in prison] or better. A lot of what you see me doing right now is just so that none of that goes in vain, [like], I’mma show y’all that this is not in vain.” Pusha’s onetime manager Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez was charged in 2009 with leading a $10 million drug-trafficking ring and sentenced to 32 years in prison. Asked whether a lyric from West’s “So Appalled” (“I speak of gospel, hostile/ Tony doing time for what he did to nostrils”) referred to Gonzalez, Pusha, who has typically been guarded about his ex-manager in the press, would only say, “That’s self-explanatory.” According to Pusha, it was the instrumental for “So Appalled” that inspired him to deliver such a spirited verse. “It’s Kanye, the beat brings the ghost out of you,” he said. The Virginia MC gave an update about Malice, who he said has been busy preparing for the release of his memoir, “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind, and Naked,” with a provocative series of vlogs that include excerpts from the book. “People always say the dichotomy of the Clipse is, I’m the more brash one and Malice is the more introspective one, and [those are] the roles we play in the group,” Pusha explained. “But when you take Malice out of the group and you sit him down and he talks to you, well, writing to you in this book, it’s not rhyming, it’s just these are his words, these are his thoughts, these are his experiences. I think people are going to be blown away by this guy’s mind.” What do you think of Pusha’s verse on “So Appalled”? Share your reviews in the comments.
