Karen Rodriguez Eliminated From ‘American Idol’

Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart join her in the bottom three, while Black Eyed Peas and Lee DeWyze perform. By Adam Graham Karen Rodriguez Photo: FOX “Love Will Lead You Back” paved a path straight to elimination for Karen Rodriguez, who was shown the door on Thursday’s (March 17) elimination episode of “American Idol.” The 21-year-old bilingual-singing New Yorker, who was praised by Steven Tyler for her “ethnic what-it-is-ness” on Wednesday’s performance episode , pleaded her case before the judges when asking them to use the season’s one save to spare her another week. “I know I can do so much better, and I know you guys believe in me,” she said, fighting back tears, after a Hail Mary rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” But it wasn’t enough: While Randy Jackson said the decision was not unanimous, the judges decided not to let Rodriguez sing another day in the competition. It was Rodriguez’s second straight trip to the bottom three, real estate she shared this week with Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart. Adedapo was the first to be shown mercy by host Ryan Seacrest, leaving Reinhart and Rodriguez behind to face the music. Ultimately it was Rodriguez — who performed Taylor Dayne’s 1990 hit “Love Will Lead You Back” on Wednesday’s show, while wearing a sci-fi silver miniskirt and a Snooki-like pouf atop her head — that came up on the short end of America’s votes. During the teary goodbye, Rodriguez was consoled by the three judges, as well as her fellow contestants. When they were sent to the bottom three earlier in the show, neither Reinhart nor Adedapo seemed very surprised with their fates. Reinhart, who in a winding speech explained that she ultimately sees herself combining “rock and funk and blues” into one style (note: she sang Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” this week), gave a sighing “yippee!” when Seacrest told her she might be in the bottom three. Later, she mock dusted off her chair before sitting down in the same seat she held the week prior. Adedapo, who mouthed “wonder who?” when she was told it was either her or the week-winning Stefano Langone in the bottom three, practically marched to her seat before Seacrest even read the results. Call it the curse of the ladies: So far this season, a male has yet to land in the bottom of the bunch. Thia Megia thought she was going to see the wrath of the bottom three and explained to the judges that she’s got more in her than she’s shown thus far. “If you guys put me through, I’ll do so much better,” she said. “I can show so much more.” She survived another week, but she should be held to her promise to step things up a notch beyond the bland balladry she’s shown to date. Everyone else was safe to sit back and watch the show, which squeezed in performances by the Black Eyed Peas (who dedicated their new single “Just Can’t Get Enough” to “our friends in Japan”) and “American Idol” season-nine winner Lee DeWyze, who performed the sleepy, John Mayer-like ballad “Beautiful Like You” from his album Live It Up. The show opened with a medley of Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” (sang by the guys) and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (the girls), a cheeky homage to the week’s songs-from-your-birth-year theme. L.A. Reid Named X Factor Judge

It looks like Simon Cowell has found the next version of… himself? Record executive Antonio “L.A.” Reid has been tapped as a judge on The X Factor , the singing competition Cowell is bringing over from Great Britain and which will debut on Fox in the fall. While he makes no mention of the new gig, Reid sent out an email to his staff this morning that read: “I have decided to leave my position as chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group. I have always thrived on growth and the next great challenge, and I look forward with much enthusiasm to what the future holds.” Reid is a three-time Grammy Award-winning executive who is responsible for signing such talents as Mariah Carey, P!nk, Justin Bieber , Rihanna, Kanye West and Usher. An official announcement of his X Factor role is expected soon, but Cowell said of Reid a couple weeks ago: “We always wanted to work with L.A., whether it was now or in the future. Because in terms of his credibility and what he’s achieved, he’s always somebody who we would love to work with… He’s had so much success. And he’s also a good friend of mine.”

L.A. Reid, Enrique Iglesias Reportedly Tapped For ‘X Factor’

Announcement regarding judges expected this week. By Jocelyn Vena Enrique Iglesias Photo: Kristian Dowling/ WireImage With names like Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger all still floating around as possible judges, multiple sources are confirming that music executive L.A. Reid will be one of the judges on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” when it premieres this fall. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that “it’s a done deal.” Simon Cowell told MTV News earlier this week that an announcement regarding the judges on the show would be made “within the week.” Reid will reportedly be let out of his contract with Universal Music early and may take a position with Sony Music, who will provide the show’s winner a recording contract in addition to the $5 million cash prize. Sources confirmed Reid’s departure to Billboard . In addition to the news that Reid is joining the show, there’s talk that Enrique Iglesias has been approached to host the reality singing competition, according to Deadline Hollywood . Iglesias reportedly was interested in becoming a judge rather than the host of the show, but with his own music career as red hot as ever, he may choose to stick with performing. A rep for the show had no comment regarding the rumors when contacted by MTV News. Reid’s involvement would make sense, given what Cowell shared with us regarding what he wants in the judges on the panel. “I’ve got to have people on the panel with me who can judge American talent because I’m 51 years old, I’m British and we’ve got people as young as 14 entering this competition. So I’ve got to make sure I’ve got people sitting alongside me who genuinely know what they’re talking about so that we don’t lose somebody in the audition process.” Related Artists Enrique Iglesias

Knocked Up Swag: MiMi And Nicky At “The Baby Shower” (Photo)

Here is a photo and even more details on Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s baby shower : Mariah Carey isn’t really one for subtly, so it’s no surprise her baby shower was a lavish over-the-top affair. The 41-year-old star, who is currently expecting twins with Nick Cannon, 31, has released photographs from the celebration, which was held at the Montage Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunday. The singer, who wore a Roberto Cavalli dress for the occasion, is seen taking pride of place in a plush chair while her doting husband caresses her growing baby bump. ‘Nick and I were so grateful to everyone who came with us to celebrate,’ she told America’s Life & Style magazine. ‘There was a lot of love in the room, and to top it off, fans from more than 50 countries sent well-wishes in a book they made for our twins titled Always Be My Babies. ‘It was a night I will never forget.’ Cannon is said to have also enjoyed the shower, with a close friend of the couple, describing him as ‘very loving’. ‘Seeing them together as a couple they’re very loving with each other and you can just feel the excitement between them over the babies,’ Stefano Zagni told Radar online. ‘During the baby shower Nick was running around with his camera taking lots of pictures but every two or three minutes he would go over to check on Mariah and see if she was okay. ‘He dotes on her. They completely adore each other and are so much in love. ‘I just think they’re going to be the perfect family. I really do. I think they’re going to make great parents. They’re going to be very loving and hands-on.’ Mariah is expected to give birth in at the end of April. Source
