Great Day For Movie Lovers: Martin Scorsese and 5 Other Singular Directors Announce New Projects

Somewhere in between false rumors about an Olivia Wilde Tomb Raider reboot and hopefully untrue speculation about another Terminator sequel , six interesting directors including Martin Scorsese, Richard Kelly and Kimberly Pierce announced new projects today. Thanks, movie-news Gods! Granted, not all of these projects will necessarily turn out well (or even at all), but if past work is any indication, the ones that crash and burn will at least do so in a unique, fascinating and hopefully spectacular fashion (Looking at you, Kelly…). Click through for a rundown and place bets on your favorites.

Was Shutter Island ‘Overlooked’?

Martin Scorsese’s gothic psychological thriller Shutter Island grossed $294 million worldwide, remains on the awards-season bubble, and persists at year’s end as a divisive critical flashpoint. So why is it among L.A. Times critic Betsy Sharkey’s most “overlooked” films of 2010? “Director Martin Scorsese’s dark and devious brain tease is as much a conversation as a movie,” Sharkey writes. ” Instead of tying up loose ends, he keeps unraveling them so by the time he drops the big one, you should be good for hours of post-cinema parsing. See it with a friend.” Funny, I thought we all… had? Anyway, I’m curious: Help me help you help her understand. [ LAT ]

Cannes Winner Jailed in Iran, Banned from Making Films for 20 Years

Sad news out of Iran: Jafar Panahi, who won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes film festival in 1995 for his debut feature, The White Balloon and has since made critically acclaimed films including The Circle , Crimson Gold and Offside , was sentenced to six years in prison by the Iranian government for joining in mourning the deaths of protesters during the 2009 presidential election. Additionally, for the next 20 years, he is not allowed to leave the country, give interviews, write scripts, make movies or find any other loopholes you might be able to think of to create art.

The 10 Most Ridiculous Casting/Development Rumors of 2010

Few Hollywood pastimes enjoy the longevity and influence of a well-placed casting or development rumor. Agents, producers, writers, studio execs and numerous other industry species have used the form to stimulate interest in their projects (or disinterest in others) as long as trade publications have existed to print them; the growth of the Web has seen those projects — and their insinuation as anything close to reality — explode. And 2010 was a banner year for BS.

Arthur Christmas Trailer Would Like You to Start Thinking About Next Christmas

Just as excitement and anxiety for the upcoming holiday approaches its peak, here comes Hollywood with a reminder of the rapidly approaching Christmas 2011. Thanks guys! The teaser for Arthur Christmas plays out like most other recent CGI animation teasers; that is, it’s more of a short film featuring the characters rather than a preview with any footage from the film. But hey, it finds a way to play off everyone’s current fascination with UFO s, which is something. I guess.

Is George Lucas Planning to Bring Actors Back From The Dead?

In one of the more bizarre rumors in a while, George Lucas-collaborator Mel Smith (director of Radioland Murders ) claims that Lucas is buying the film rights to dead movie stars in hopes of casting them in a movie with the help of digital effects. Given his track record for the last ten years, I honestly didn’t think Lucas could do anything that would make my jaw drop for even a moment. But bravo. I was wrong.
