Miami don tweets Wale, Meek Mill and Pill set to appear on compilation album due May 24. By Alvin Blanco Rick Ross Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images Rick Ross is wasting no time in getting his Maybach Music Group rolling. The Miami rap don announced that he’s releasing a compilation album called Self Made that will be in stores May 24. The Bawse delivered the news about the new album via Twitter , including his latest signees — DC rapper Wale, Philadelphia’s Meek Mill and Atlanta MC Pill — in the tweet. After a bidding war that included Bryan “Baby” Williams’ Cash Money Records and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records, the Def Jam artist decided to pass on aligning with another hip-hop mogul, choosing instead to partner with the Warner Music Group to distribute his Maybach Music Group imprint. “We are thrilled to be in business with Rick Ross,” said Todd Moscowitz, co-president and CEO of Warner Bros. Records, in a statement last month. “We were drawn to his hustle. Ross is an entrepreneur who built his company from the ground up. He’s a music magnate, a lightning rod, and an empire builder. Our partnership with him is about building a brand that endures. We back his vision all the way and are ready to give him the resources he needs to pursue that vision.” Of the aforementioned artists, Wale was the first to sign with the Bawse’s label, followed by Meek Mill and Pill, who was already a Warner artist. Other acts on MMG include Gunplay, Torch and Young Breed of rap group Triple Cs as well as R&B singer Masspike Miles. Last July, Rick Ross released his fourth solo album, Teflon Don, which featured the hits “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” and “Aston Martin Music” as well as the street anthem “MC Hammer.” Beginning March 18, Ross will be heading out on the road with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Travis Barker for the I Am Music II Tour . ‘True Blood’ ‘s Rutina Wesley Recalls Early ‘Fame,’ On ‘When I Was 17’

Before she fought vampires, the actress got her start at a performing arts high school. By MTV News Staff Rutina Wesley Photo: MTV News Rutina Wesley is probably best known for her recent work on “True Blood,” where she plays Tara Thornton, the spirited, sass-tacular sidekick of Sookie Stackhouse. But before that, she impressed on the Broadway stage and starred in the 2007 film “How She Move,” both of which showed off her first passion: dance. Wesley grew up in Las Vegas, the daughter of a tap-dancing father and a showgirl mother, and as a teen, she attended the prestigious Las Vegas Academy, a performing arts magnet school, where prospective students must audition to be accepted. Naturally, she danced to get her spot. Once she got into the Academy, she faced a whole new series of challenges, as she reveals on the next episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17.” “The first show I did in high school was ‘Fame,’ Wesley recalled. “What I love about ‘Fame’ is it’s sort of like I was living ‘Fame.’ I was going to a performing arts high school, [and] I knew the hard work it took to be there. The auditions were brutal for that show, I remember I had to dance, sing and act, and it was really tough.” Of course, she landed a role in play, and it was then that she got her first taste of actual fame. From there on out, she knew she was born to be a performer. “The theater at my school was awesome, ” she laughed. “It was a 1,400-seat auditorium, so, being in that auditorium at 17, and having, like 1,400 people cheer for you was, like, one of the most amazing feelings that I’ve ever felt, energy-wise. It just felt right.” To hear more about Wesley’s story — and find out what OutKast’s Big Boi and actor Joey Lawrence were like when they were 17, tune in to the next episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday (September 18) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Rick Ross Stands By T.I., Talks New Collabos

‘Regardless of what it is, you don’t turn your back on him,’ Ross says of Tip’s legal issues. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News No matter what, Rick Ross said he’s going to stand by his friend T.I. The King of the South is in some serious trouble and could have his probation revoked after he and his wife were arrested earlier this month on drug charges . “I think just being firm and being men of our word is what that’s about at the end of the day,” Ross said last week in L.A. during VMA weekend about supporting Tip. “Once you become an ally and a partner, you anticipate the ups and the downs. You gotta be a soldier. The shoe is gonna be on the other foot, either way it goes, when you getting money in the streets, period. Just being G’s, man. It is what it is, man. A lot of times, these situations be blown out of proportion and made into a lot bigger than what they are. “As long as the real G’s and the leaders set the example of ‘This is what you do when your brother gets into trouble,’ ” Ross added. “Regardless of what it is, you don’t turn your back on him; you ride with him. … You gotta stick to the script. When situations come, you stay firm. If that’s your homie, that’s your homie.” Several years ago, before Ross and Tip met, Ricky Rozay publicly denounced Tip over a misunderstanding. Since then, however, all ill will has been quashed between the two, and not only have they become cool, they have worked together several times on other artists’ tracks. This year, Ross pulled Tip in on his Teflon Don album via “Maybach Music III.” Tip called on Ross for a track on the upcoming King Uncaged album, “Pledge Allegiance to the Swag.” Ross said “Pledge” and two other new songs were recorded with Tip while the two were in Miami. “I’mma be honest: That was the first time me and the homie actually got in the studio and I saw him work his magic,” Ross recalled. “To be honest, I was blown away by the homie. He came by the spot. He was like, ‘I’m in Miami. I’m in a good mood, big homie.’ He had just tied his knot. Congratulations to him and Tiny. He was like, ‘I’m swinging through the city.’ I was like, ‘Come through. I’m over at my spot. The Swisher Suite. Let’s get it in.’ The homie came through, walked in. I had the beat on. Your man Tip, 10 minutes tops, ‘Let’s record.’ The homie laid his verse. We played some more music. Another 10 minutes, laid another verse. So he actually did two features for me. I did his feature. We got it all done in a matter of time. Left, went to the club after that.” What do you expect from Ross and Tip’s new collabos? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Rick Ross Talks T.I., Jadakiss, Erykah Badu Collabos

‘The time was right,’ Ross says of Tip lacing ‘Maybach Music III.’ By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Erykah Badu released a video for the remix of “Window Seat” that features Rick Ross. That collaboration led to the singer appearing on Ross’ song “Maybach Music III,” which appears on his acclaimed new album Teflon Don . “She never really collaborated with a lot of artists outside of Outkast,” Ross explained. “Maybe another artist or two, [like] the Roots. It was always conscious music she was making. You know, a gritty street artist — that’s always a plus when you get to work with somebody with the flowers around them and [they’re] burning incense. And it’s positive.” Ross was a longtime admirer of Badu’s work, which made the idea of working with her intriguing. “Her music always attracted me; it was always attractive to my kind of music,” he said. “Once we collaborated with the ‘Window Seat’ remix … the lanes of communication was open, I was like, ‘Let’s do something different.’ ” The track, which was produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, also features T.I. and Jadakiss. “I felt the time was right for me and T.I. [to work together],” the Bawse explained. “We had never personally collaborated with each other on a record one on one. Early on in my career, I had said [negative] things when I didn’t know him. Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did. He came from home doing what he did. I did my thing.” But as time passed, the animosity waned, and Ross asked Tip to collaborate. “Just on a mutual respect for each other, I reached out to him. When I got that verse back, I was like, ‘He meant that.’ We had been seeing each other over a period of time, saluting each other, bumping into each other, he knew I was a fan of his. We captured that moment in time which was one of the dopest records. And that meant the most to me. I used to play that T.I. verse in my studio, like, ‘This set the tone, right here. It set the tone.’ It just felt good for the homie to lace me. I salute Tip.” Ross brought Jadakiss, a longtime friend, on “Maybach” as well. “Jada was always that New York underdog,” he said. “That next lyricist. You could be the hottest at the time, but if you slippin’, Jada is one record away. He’s a cool dude, somebody I got a mutual respect and a friendship with.” This week, Ross released a new track online, “Summer’s Mine,” where he takes aim at his competition. “Bitch I run the south/ I’m what you wanna be,” he raps. “This how you wanna live/ This what you wanna drive/ Be honest with yourself/ I’m who you idolize.” What do you think of Ross’ “Maybach Music III”? West delivers a super-boastful verse, matching the tone and aggression he rapped with on his most recent number, “Power.” “I’m back by unpopular demand/ Least you still poppin’ in Japan,” ‘Ye raps over staccato-paced drums. “Shopping in Milan, hopping out the van/ Screams from the fans: ‘Yeezy, we always knew you’d be on top again!’ ” A snippet of the track was first made available on Thursday (July 1) — before the entire song leaked later in the day — through a preview of Ross-go-to-director Spiff TV’s Teflon Don: The Bossumentary. Spiff TV is the man behind many of Rozay’s viral Web videos . In the preview clip , West discusses working with Ross, pointing to a number of similarities between him and his Def Jam labelmate. “I just remember Ross had so many verses,” West said. “When I started hearing the records come out, I always felt a connection, ’cause I felt like we came from similar places and we paid so many dues. We all had ups and downs in our lives and sh–. And now, this is the highest caliber you can get to, you know what it is. And it didn’t happen overnight, it’s 10, 15, 20 years in the making.” In addition to West, Ross recently announced he recruited T.I. to appear on Teflon Don ‘s “Maybach Music 3.” “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. Rick Ross Recruits T.I. For His ‘Masterpiece,’ ‘Maybach Music 3’

‘I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses,’ Ross says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rick Ross Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music” featuring Jay-Z was one of the standout tracks from his sophomore set, Trilla. The Miami rapper upped the star power on the sequel, recruiting Lil Wayne and Kanye West to join him on “Maybach Music 2.” Now, to complete the trilogy, Ross, is connecting with yet another heavyweight MC. “I had to do it real big with someone I never collaborated with before: Tip,” Ross told “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy of T.I. “We got a full orchestra, a live orchestra from the strings on down. It’s gonna be a masterpiece. It felt good to work with him. He just came home and got in the lab. He heard the music, he knows the legacy of part one and part two. And I feel like the verse he spits on this record may be one of his hardest verses. It’s that ‘Rubber Band Man’ flow.” In the past, Ross spoke out in a lighthearted manner about not being included on Tip’s “Swagga Like Us” record , which also included Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. “How could you forget about me?” he asked in his own freestyle over the M.I.A.-sampled track. “I feel like everything happens in time,” Ross told MTV News about the omission. “What T.I. had on his plate and what he had going on, I think that was the roster for him to put together. He had to make it as big as he could. It’s Paper Trail. He had to make it explosive. … The way I make music, I’m hater-free. So I don’t have egos. I’m a fan.” Ross is putting the finishing touches on his next album, Teflon Don, which is slated for release next month. What are you expecting from “Maybach Music 3”? Let us know in the comments!
