Meek Mill Bosses Up At #7 Spot In Hottest Debate

As part of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, Meek proves he’s a ‘Boss’ and makes his Hottest MCs in the Game debut. By Rob Markman Meek Mill Photo: Getty Images Album sales aren’t the only measure of a hot MC. Meek Mill doesn’t have a solo LP on the shelf, but the Philadelphia flame spitter has made his presence felt in a variety of other ways. Thanks to “Ima Boss,” his inescapable single with Maybach Music CEO Rick Ross, Meek has maintained a deafening buzz on the streets and impacted the game like no other MC in his class. Meek Milly meets all of the criteria to be considered one of the “Hottest MCs in the Game.” His in-your-face lyrical delivery and fresh-off-the-block style have all helped earn him the #7 spot on the “VII” edition of the list. Meek started off his year right, landing a spot on XXL ‘s 2011 Freshman cover before most rap fans could even pick him out of a lineup. But those unfamiliar with Milly quickly learned who he was when Ross signed him to Maybach Music Group . And then his single “Ima Boss” began to catch fire in the streets. From the song’s opening bars, Meek separated himself from other rap rookies by putting his gangsta on full display, daring his adversaries to come for him (“They say they gon’ rob me, see me never do sh–“). Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! HOT STREAK Albums: Self Made, Vol. 1 with Maybach Music Group Selected Mixtapes: Dreamchasers Singles: “Ima Boss” (featuring Rick Ross), “Tupac Back” (featuring Rick Ross) and “House Party” (featuring Young Chris) Street Bangers: “Tony Story” and “Ima Boss” remix (featuring T.I., Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Birdman, Swizz Beatz and DJ Khaled) Key Guest Appearances: Tyga’s “Rack City” remix, Maino’s “Cream” and Rick Ross’ “Last Breath” Meteoric Metrics: Along with MMG, Meek scored a #1 rap album with the label’s Self Made, Vol.1 compilation. Business Ventures: Hooked up with Ecko Unltd to start his Dreamchasers clothing line. Tours: Hit the road with Lil Wayne tourmate Rick Ross, playing select dates on Weezy’s I’m Still Music Tour Monumental Moment: A month after appearing on the 2011 XXL Freshman cover, Meek announced he had signed with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group. Forecast: Meek’s accomplishments are more impressive when you consider that he has yet to release his debut album. With an unspecified 2012 release date on the table, look for Meek Milly’s star to rise in the coming months. “For me, Meek is that real, real street music,” MTV News editor/writer Rebecca Thomas said. “As much as I’m a Drake fan, a [Big] Sean fan, all those people, I just think there are days you wake up and you need to hear ‘Ima Boss.’ If you didn’t feel ‘Tupac Back,’ if you didn’t feel ‘Ima Boss’ all last year, you’re dead.” It wasn’t just the fans that felt Meek either. Everyone from Fabolous to Jim Jones repurposed the “Ima Boss” beat for their own freestyle needs. The omnipresent single peaked at #17 on the Billboard Rap chart, but its run in the streets and the clubs made it seem so much bigger. Mill didn’t ride just the one single, though: On “Tupac Back,” he resurrected the spirit of the fallen rap legend, and with “House Party,” from his Dreamchasers mixtape, Meek has created quite the track record. Last year alone, Meek signed a deal with Ecko Clothing to launch his own Dreamchasers line, was named one of MTV Jams’ Fab 5 artists, won MTV2’s Sucker Free’s Who Got Next award and snagged a #1 rap album with his appearance on MMG’s Self Made, Vol.1 compilation. “You need dudes like Meek to hit the reset button every now and then on the game just to let them know like, ‘Yo, this comes from the streets,’ ” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news. “He’s just as responsible for building that MMG Empire as Ross is.” Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts ,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with ” Sucker Free Certified ” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Rick Ross Birthday Bash Boasts Dr. Dre, Diddy

Miami’s Club Amnesia filled with hip-hop royalty Sunday night in honor of Maybach Music MC. By Rahman Dukes Rick Ross and Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News MIAMI — Rick Ross cemented a weekend of jet-set partying for his 36th birthday in ultimate style Sunday night at his home base in Miami, surrounded by some of his closest friends and thousands of fans. Club Amnesia was packed wall to wall with almost no wiggle room, filled with hip-hop heavyweights and club revelers watching closely, competing to get a shot of the action. Ross ascended from a chauffeur-driven black Maybach shortly after 1 a.m. with companion DJ Khaled by his side. Decked out in his signature coconut-colored silk threads, the hefty MC was swiftly ushered by his Maybach Music entourage inside the venue. Fans cheered, “Happy birthday, boss,” as an elated Ross made his way to Amnesia’s top-level VIP area, where dozens of music celebrities — including producer/singer Sean Garrett, actor Evan Ross and powerhouse producer Dr. Dre — were waiting in the wings for his arrival. Dre was easily the night’s most-talked-about guest, as the sight of him and Ross together confirmed their union after being spotted hanging out together in Miami recently. Soon after Ross, the celebrity arrivals began to flow in sync with the hundreds of bottles of Moet Rose champagne and Ciroc vodka that were delivered to his seating area. Party host Diddy showed up soon after with an entourage consisting of new Bad Boy artist French Montana, Cassie and his son Justin. Minutes later, Wiz Khalifa and girlfriend Amber Rose joined the party. “This is your night!” Diddy shouted at Ross, alongside a grinning Khalifa by his side. Ross, with Dre directly behind him, raised a glass filled with pink bubbly. As the night continued full steam, other hip-hop artists including the LOX, upstart Chicago crew L.E.P. and singer the Dream separately made their way to greet the Bawse. At one point, there were whispers that Young Money superstar Drake was also present in the building, but the Canadian MC was nowhere to be seen. One of the most-touching moments of the night was a snapshot of Ross and former business manager and Poe Boy head E-Class exchanging hugs and pounds. Class had been a longtime associate of Rozay since his earlier days, until the two had a recent falling out that ended their business relationship. Wrapping up the night in traditional fashion, Ross and his MMG family exited the empty-bottle-strewn VIP area and made their way to the stage for an impromptu performance. Ross gave the audience their money’s worth, performing hit after hit from his war chest of club anthems. “They say I’m getting money, must be Illuminati/ Talking to the Holy Ghost, in my Bugatti,” Ross rapped on the track “Holy Ghost” off his Rich Forever mixtape. “He knockin’ on the door, don’t let the devil iiiinnn.” On this night, the larger-than-life MC had his way, no doubt to be blessed with another banner year. Childish Gambino’s ‘Heartbeat’ Video Fits Song’s ‘Mood’

‘Fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song,’ ‘Community’ star-turned-rapper tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ross McAlpine Childish Gambino Photo: MTV News Don’t call Childish Gambino ‘s upcoming “Heartbeat” clip a video; rather, it’s a reflection of how the actor-turned-rapper was feeling when he recorded it. “I do not really have a set of things in mind. I thought the best way to convey the feeling that’s in the song was to be confused ourselves,” Childish Gambino, a.k.a. “Community” star Donald Glover, told MTV News last week during a break from filming the clip in Van Nuys, California. “I guess when it’s all said and done, fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song.” “Heartbeat” — from CG’s debut album, Camp — is an electrified breakup song equipped with pulsating drums and buzzing synth chords. The rapper, who is better known (for now) for his role as Troy Barnes on “Community,” enlisted director Kyle Newacheck to shoot the visual. Newacheck directed an episode of the NBC comedy back in 2009. In the month leading up to his November release, Childish told MTV News that Camp was a “labor of love.” With the independently released LP, Gambino aimed to tell a story. “The biggest compliment I can give it is that I like it more than everything else I’ve done,” he said. “I think it’s a cohesive piece, and I wanted to tell a whole story with it. Hopefully, the whole album is like a book or a novel where [there’s] a through line.” “Heartbeat” is simply a chapter in that story, and its video will be reflective. “This is kinda like the mood of the song,” Gambino said. “I wouldn’t say it’s so much a video as much as it is just a mood.” What are you expecting from Childish’s “Heartbeat” video? Wale: ‘I Still Support’ Pill Despite MMG Split

‘I believe in Pill, and I’m sure Rozay believes in Pill, and we wish him the best,’ Wale tells MTV News of former Maybach Music comrade. By Rob Markman Wale Photo: MTV News There is no love lost between Maybach Music and Pill . Earlier this month, the Atlanta MC dropped a bomb when he revealed that he was working to terminate his deal with Warner Music Group and leave Rick Ross ‘ Maybach Music crew. There isn’t any beef with Wale , though; the D.C. spitter told MTV News he still supports his former MMG comrade. “Personal is personal, business is business. I’m friends with people that I’ve fired, so I’ve been in the game long enough to understand [you need to] separate the two,” Wale said Wednesday when he walked the red carpet for the reopening of Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in New York. “So shout-out to Pill and what he’s doin’.” On December 28, Pill vented via Twitter , criticizing his label for not providing enough television and radio support. Though the “Trap Goin’ Ham” MC was featured heavily on Maybach’s 2011 Self Made Vol. 1 compilation, on January 3, he told MTV News he was never actually signed to Ross’ label. According to Pill, his recording contract was with MMG’s parent label, Warner Bros. Still, P-I-Double-L was included on a number of label-driven projects, appearing on the October XXL cover with Ross and company as well as a May 2011 episode of “RapFix Live” with Rozay, Wale and Meek Mill. In the end, however, things just didn’t work out. Though Pill is obviously frustrated, he maintains that he doesn’t harbor any ill will toward anyone in MMG. “I ain’t got nothing against none of them, nobody. It’s just the situation don’t work,” Pill said matter-of-factly. “I still support what he’s doin’; it just didn’t work out on the business side,” Wale echoed. “Everybody gets chances, though. Everybody gets second, third, fourth, fifth chances. I believe in Pill, and I’m sure Rozay believes in Pill, and we wish him the best.” What do you think of Wale’s support for Pill despite the MMG split? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Wale

Reality Report: Tami Roman Says That Lawsuit Is BS And Explains Why She Doesn’t Owe Her Shady Ex Manager Isht!!

We’re sure that it won’t take too long for it to become pretty obvious to Tami’s former manager that he wants no part of her. In a radio interview today, Tami spoke up about the allegations that she owes this Jerry character money for hooking her up with her gig on Basketball Wives … and she sounds to us like she’s confident that she can back up every last word she’s saying about it. It’s true. He had been my manager for about maybe 8 years. Yes, we had a long relationship and it had always been an amicable up until this moment. Our particular situation was you know I pay people based on what you do and that had always been our understanding and our agreement. You know if you send me out on an audition and I book that job I’m going to pay your commission. If I initiate employment for myself, you’re not going to get commission on that because you weren’t involved in it. So that had always been our understanding and that had always worked for the past 8 years. With “Basketball Wives,” they approached me when they did their first season. They contacted him and you know I just wasn’t really ready to go on a show, talk about Kenny. You know I had moved so past that. In addition to, I really didn’t want to go back to the reality genre. So between the year that they had their first season and the second season which is when I actually came onto the show, my family fell on a hardship I actually introduced that on the show. Jerry placed another call on my behalf to Shed Media, which is the production company for our show and I started having communication and dialogue with the executive producer, telling them my story. They liked my story- I was on Season 2. Now for the payment that I received for Season 2, Jerry Silverhardt was compensated. And that’s what he’s not admitting to. When it came to-we didn’t even know we were going to get a Season 3-so we did the reunion and we got the announcement we were going to do a Season 3. As I wasn’t happy with my contract for Season 2, I didn’t feel that he did the best job for me in that moment considering everything I was going through and you know what the value of my storyline that I brought to Season 2, I terminated him before we started negotiating contract for Season 3. She also brought up an interesting fact about the lawsuit itself: this Jerry character filed his lawsuit in 2010… So why wait until now to bring it to the attention of the media? Drake, Rick Ross Share Musical ‘Chemistry’

‘We want to make the same music. It’s definitely a very good experience,’ Drake tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia “The Poetess” Morris Drake Photo: MTV News Drake and Rick Ross have a lot on their plates these days. But in between promoting Take Care and Rozay putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Drizzy hopes that the two MCs can finish up their collaborative mixtape Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once) . “Yeah, it only makes sense, so hopefully. I’m actually going to Miami to see him this week, sit down and work on God Forgives and just work on whatever comes,” Drake told MTV News of the tag-team tape while backstage Power 106’s Cali Christmas Concert on Friday night. “Me and him usually do a few songs, so we’ll see where they end up.” The two rap stars have paired on a number of fan favorites, like DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One,” Rozay’s “Aston Martin Music” and most recently “Lord Knows” from Take Care . For Drake it’s all about their comfort while recording together. “If I have chemistry with anyone in the studio it’s Ross. We want to make the same music. It’s definitely a very good experience,” he said. In a November interview on “RapFix Live,” the Maybach Music head assured that Y.O.L.O. was definitely coming. At the time, he was flirting with the idea of the project becoming an official retail release. “You know, Drake, I consider him a part of the fam. It’s not just music,” Ross said. “We stay in the studio, we stay on Skype.” Last week, Ross took to Twitter to announce his plans for a new solo mixtape as well. “It’s Official Drop’n New Mixtape!!! #RozayNewTape,” he wrote.
