Jay-Z And Kanye’s ‘Otis’ Video: Maybach Massacre

Subtly swaggadocious video, directed by Spike Jonze, sees the dynamic duo chopping up a Maybach — just for the heck of it. By James Montgomery Jay-Z and Kanye West in their “Otis” video Photo: Roc-A-Fella It would be darn-near impossible for Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s “Otis” video to match the braggadocious blitz of the song itself, but give them credit for at least coming close. Because while the Spike-Jonze directed clip (which just premiered on MTV and MTV.com) doesn’t feature a single Gulfstream G450, Cuban cigar, Hermes clutch or Benz, it is still a subtly swagged-out affair — a cocksure, cool thing in which the dynamic duo take a saber saw to a glistening new Maybach and turn it into a tricked-out “Thunderdome” cruiser, then do doughnuts in a parking lot with a gaggle of models packed in the back. Oh, and there are some fireworks too. And really, on the swag scale, that ranks somewhere between 10 and 30 thousand 100 million , which certainly makes “Otis” one of the more assured videos to come down the pipeline in a long while. And give credit to all parties involved that they realized they really didn’t need to do much of anything else in the clip; after all, ‘Ye, Hov and Jonze are certainly three of the biggest stars in the world, and their collaboration could’ve easily devolved into the realm of self-parody (see the late, not-so-great Diddy and Nas team-up “Hate Me Now” ). Instead, we get a video that’s little more than a couple of dudes (and Aziz Ansari) tooling around in a parking lot — which, really, is all “Otis” needs to be. Because like Watch the Throne , the album from which it comes , the main attraction of “Otis” lies in the fact that it features roughly 50 percent of the biggest rap names in the game (not to say the song isn’t also great, because it is). There’s a genuine thrill in watching West and Jay hang over each other while delivering their verses or crack up behind the wheel of the Maybach; in a way, it’s like we’re getting a tiny glimpse into their private world. And that’s what makes the video such a treat. What do the critics think of Watch the Throne ? Unlike his previous collaborations with West — the maudlin short film “We Were Once a Fairytale” or the deceptively simple “Flashing Lights” — with “Otis,” Jonze plays it relatively straight. There are the same tracking shots he’s used in old Beastie Boys videos, and the blown-out color palette recalls even earlier work like R.E.M.’s “Crush With Eyeliner” or “Electrolite.” He’s staying true to his roots, which, given the caliber of everyone involved, is an accomplishment in its own right. So while “Otis” might not be what you were expecting, in a lot of ways, it’s even more. There’s an unabashed joy to it, and there’s no denying the power of its singular image, either: slicing and dicing a Maybach (average sticker price: $380,000) is a bold, ballsy declaration, indeed. One that speaks louder than a million boasts. What did you think of the “Otis” video? Share your thoughts on Facebook or tweet your reactions and videos @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVOtis ! Will Ferrell, Jon Stewart Crack Jokes At The Comedy Awards

‘The Golden Globes celebrate comedies every year — comedies like ‘Burlesque’ and ‘The Tourist,’ ‘ Andy Samberg points out to MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Will Ferrell arrives at the Comedy Awards on Sunday Photo: Getty Images If there were an awards show to celebrate the very best in comedy, you’d probably want Will Ferrell and Adam McKay there on the red carpet riffing about how “The Other Guys” was snubbed at the Oscars and now finally their genius is being recognized. “I was with Will during the Academy Awards, and he slowly got drunker and said, ‘What about my kind?’ ” you’d want McKay to say. “I kept saying, ‘It has to be nominated! It has to be on there!’ ” Ferrell would answer. “And I said, ‘Will, we know ahead of time if it’s going to be nominated,” McKay would respond. And Ferrell would shoot back, “‘No, tonight’s going to special! They’re going to announce a secret nomination.’ ” Here’s the funny thing: There is such an awards show — Comedy Central held the first annual Comedy Awards on Saturday night — and that exchange is exactly how Ferrell and McKay began a red-carpet chat with MTV News. And as other celebs joined them on the carpet — Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Andy Samberg, Tracy Morgan — they picked up on Ferrell and McKay’s theme: Does comedy need an awards show, or is laughter all the reward comedians need? “It’s all about winning things!” Andy Richter declared. “That’s the reason we all got into this. It’s all about trinkets and trophies.” Not so, said Stewart. “I’m not sure anything needs acknowledgement anymore, especially in the show-business arena,” the “Daily Show” host told us. “But here’s what I think it is: These carpets get no other use, and it would be wasteful not to use them. If you think about it that way, none of this is necessary.” Samberg, meanwhile, deadpanned that before the Comedy Awards, there was one show in particular around to reward the funniest people of the year. “The Golden Globes celebrate comedies every year — comedies like ‘Burlesque’ and ‘The Tourist,’ ” he said. “And ‘Chicago’ — another hilarious comedy. So no, we don’t need this night.”

Rick Ross Says Wale Has Kanye West ‘Potential’

Maybach Music Group boss tells MTV News, ‘The rhymes Wale has been laying down the last few months’ recall ‘Ye. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Rick Ross might not have gotten his man in Wiz Khalifa , who he wanted to ink to a deal with his Maybach Music Group, but the Miami boss’ first pick, Wale , wasn’t a bad backup. Ross thinks the Washington, D.C., rhyme spitter has a chance to follow in the footsteps of another guy who was also considered “unconventional” when he first signed on with his crew. Wale could be the next Kanye West, Ross told MTV News. “They may be unconventional, but to me, it comes naturally,” Ross said about moving to sign Wale and Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill. “After spending months of my summer working with Kanye , I learned and seen so many different visions and ideas come to light. I was there for ‘Flashing Lights,’ when it was actually titled another title that me and Kanye went back and forth about. And when I think about Wale, I think about Kanye. “And the kind of rhymes Wale has been laying down the last few months, since we been in the studio, I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be a lot of similarities as far as the pictures that he paints,” the Bawse continued. “Of course, Kanye is one of the greats of our time but I see that same potential in Wale.” At the moment, Ross and his MMG roster, which also includes Pill, his Triple C fam and Masspike Miles, among others, are working on the Self Made compilation set to arrive on “Maybach 24.” Ross suggested Wale’s next solo album should be out “two to three months after that” group project. While the Maybach Music head said Wale is poised to make big waves, the Miami MC was making waves of his own over the weekend, but probably not the kind he’s aiming for. Ross was arrested on Friday in Louisiana on a marijuana possession charges and subsequently released with a misdemeanor summons. Ross is now in New York and scheduled to take the stage in Long Island on Monday night (March 28) as part of Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour lineup. T.I. Allegedly Had Codeine, Ecstasy, Marijuana During L.A. Arrest

Judge orders rapper to appear in court to explain why probation should not be revoked. By James Montgomery T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. and wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested in Los Angeles earlier this month, police originally charged them with possession of a controlled substance — a substance which would later be revealed to be Ecstasy . But according to new documents, that might not have been the only drug in their possession. The charges could send T.I. back to prison. According to documents obtained by E! Online late Thursday, T.I.’s probation officer reported that L.A. County Sherriff’s deputies also found codeine and marijuana in his possession during the arrest. In the initial report filed after the couple’s September 1 arrest, deputies said they pulled over their Maybach and then “smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.” The documents were filed as part of a summons issued on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Charles Pannel Jr., requiring T.I. to appear before the court to explain why his probation should not be revoked after the L.A. incident, the the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The judge’s order lists three possible violations of his probation: possession of Ecstasy, testing positive for opiates and associating with a convicted felon. After T.I.’s arrest, TMZ posted photos of the Maybach that showed several Styrofoam cups in the cup holders. The Web site alleged that the cups contained sizzurp — a.k.a. codeine syrup. MTV News’ phone calls and an e-mail sent to a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Correction — which handles probation supervision — were not responded to by press time. A message left for T.I. lawyer Don Samuel was also not returned, though in the days following the rapper’s arrest, Samuel told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he was uncertain how the arrest would effect his client’s probation, saying “without knowing all the facts, it’s premature to speculate what the court is likely to do.” The summons does not set a date for T.I. to appear before the court.
