Alec Baldwin has an interesting, even somewhat sympathetic, take on the Anthony Weiner scandal, which reached new, disgusting heights this week upon the release of the Congressman’s bare penis pic . In a piece for The Huffington Post , Baldwin delved into the way technology has shaped human behavior and wrote : “For high functioning men like Weiner and other officials who have lived through such scandals, who are constantly on the go, that leaves one tried and true source of a reliable high. The affirmation that comes when someone lets you know they want to sleep with you. Or even cyber-sleep with you.” Smart phones and social networks have opened the door for busy individuals to receive the kind of gratification they aren’t receiving at home, Baldwin argues: “Appointment sex with your spouse doesn’t always arrive when you need it most. A modern cell phone, loaded with contacts of willing fellow players, has a table with a red checkered table cloth ready for you at virtually any time.” Baldwin doesn’t go so far as to absolve Weiner of his wrongdoing, but he does paint the politician as a “modern human being” who gave in to the temptation right at his fingertips. Literally. “We tell ourselves that these devices help us communicate more effectively,” the actor wrote. “What they actually do is allow us to bypass the person lying right next to us, across the room from us or at an airport heading home to us, in order to meet our immediate, even inconvenient, needs. To bypass their moods, their current view of us and their own desires, or lack thereof.” In this case, that would be Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. ‘We can’t believe our luck,’ Elton tells MTV News at red-carpet premiere of Cameron Crowe musical documentary. Last spring, the fest kicked things off in midtown Manhattan with the premiere of “Shrek Forever After.” This time around, Tribeca returned to its roots, settling into the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (just steps from Ground Zero) for the debut of “The Union,” Cameron Crowe’s documentary about the Grammy-nominated musical collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell. “We can’t believe our luck,” Elton told MTV News Wednesday on the red carpet as paparazzi flashbulbs popped around him. Joining the music legend on the carpet were Martin Scorsese, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Anna Kendrick, Rainn Wilson, Denis Leary, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Zoe Kravitz, ?uestlove, David O. Russell and others. Elton himself confessed he was initially nervous to invite Crowe’s cameras into the recording studio, but was very happy with the results and the opportunity to debut the film in New York. “I’ve never had a song filmed when I’m writing it, but Cameron’s such a friend, I trusted him,” he told us. “New York City is my favorite place to play. I’ve played 62 shows at Madison Square Garden, I’ve played at Radio City, Central Park, Shea Stadium, Fillmore East. It’s been a very important city in my musical career and probably the most exciting city in the world.” “The Union,” then, provides a singular window into Elton’s artistic process, and folks like ?uestlove couldn’t wait to see what it was all about. “The ’70s icons that we worship, they came before the information age,” the Roots drummer told us. “Now, you can watch Kanye make beats, but I would love to see how Elton collaborates. Who does the music, who does the lyrics, how that all works out.” And as the celebs glided down the red carpet on their way inside the theater, many couldn’t help but marvel at how the festival, born in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, continues to thrive a decade later. “People forget that after 9/11, this neighborhood was devastated,” Denis Leary told us. “People were afraid to come down and some people were moving out. You know what they say, “scared money don’t make no money” Diddy (a k a Sean Combs) wants cold, hard cash from a club to host the after-party for his Diddy Dirty Money tour date in New York later this month. Sources say the rapper — who’s touring smaller venues in support of his “Last Train to Paris” release and will play the Hammerstein Ballroom on April 22 — has been asking for as much $45,000 from Manhattan clubs to host an after-party, with $25,000 payable to the artist when the venue signs on the dotted line and the rest three days before the party jumps off. But those close to the club scene say Manhattan boites have been balking at that figure. “It’s unlikely that [a club] in New York would pay that amount,” said one top nightlife promoter. “For that amount of money, Vegas makes sense. That’s normal for Vegas. New York doesn’t work like that.” Sources said that Diddy’s team of promoters finally located a West Orange, NJ, venue willing to fork over the loot — but that when he heard the party wasn’t going to be in the Big Apple, he balked. After decades of influencing Miami’s young to “pop that thang baby!” Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is making good on previous comments that he’d consider running for Mayor of Miami. Campbell is one of nearly a dozen people who indicated they want to be Miami-Dade’s next mayor by filing the necessary paperwork to be placed on the May 24th special election ballot. The mayoral seat was left vacant after a March 15 recall election where 88 percent of voters said then Mayor Carlos Alvarez should be removed from office. The deadline to file was 5 p.m. Tuesday April 12th. According to CBS reports : Before filing his paperwork, Campbell addressed a group in Miami Beach. “My major hurdle is people taking me seriously, a lot of people think this is a joke,” Campbell told the crowd who swore he’s serious about the mayor’s job. “I call it a banana republic and I’m serious about it. You look at the commission and they make their own rules as they go, regardless of what the county attorney says, they make their own rules, just do what they want. They have no respect for the people.” Hmmm… “they make their own rules, just do what they want.” Sounds like someone else we know!
