On the list of unexpected celebrity news stories, Tom Hanks meeting a fan in a Fargo, N.D., diner, clowning around with him and posing for a series of pictures in which the guy pretended to be passed out drunk may be unparalleled. It’s also pretty much the most awesome. Yes, this appears to have happened to a real-life dude, who happens to use Reddit and obviously posted the Tom Hanks photos you see here on Reddit. A million people have viewed the images, with approximately 999,999 of them saying how cool it is that the Academy Award winner would do this. He Tweeted last week: “Back from Vacation. Missed the Olympics but know of US Women’s soccer Gold!! In Fargo ND? The TNT Diner makes killer breakfast. Hanx” So killer, some guy may steal your glasses and pass out next to you …
Todd Akin may have just met his match in Tom Smith, another Republican U.S. Senate candidate who made controversial remarks about rape this week. Smith, who was ironically trying to distance himself from the Todd Akin legitimate rape controversy, likened pregnancy from rape to any conception outside marriage. The Pennsylvanian said that while he condemns Akin’s comment, he agrees that abortion should be banned without exceptions, including for rape. Asked how he would handle a daughter or granddaughter getting pregnant as a result of rape, Smith said he had already “lived something similar to that.”

Don’t tell David Koepp that scandal is good for box office. The screenwriter ( Jurassic Park , Indiana Jones: The Return of a Legend ) and director of this week’s Premium Rush told Movieline that speculation that the media scandal involving Kristen Stewart, her Twilight co-star and reported off-screen beau Robert Pattinson and her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders is somehow good for business is “a cynical response” to the situation. “The people involved in any kind of scandal like that might want to respond, Who gives a shit? I didn’t say you could eat my head . You know?” Koepp told me. John Kamps, his writing partner on Premium Rush, agreed: “I think historically scandal has never done well for movies.” (Movieline will post an interview with both regarding their new film on Friday.) When I asked Koepp what he made of the media frenzy surrounding Stewart, Sanders and Pattinson, he replied: “I think it was sad for all involved.” Koepp was hired by Universal to write a script to Snow White and the Huntsman but explained that he departed the project on friendly terms because the producers wanted to pursue a different direction. “I felt like there was a good path with her, but they wanted to explore a different thing I had no ideas for,” said Koepp, who told me he couldn’t picture SWATH 2 without Stewart and, therefore, “couldn’t follow through.” Koepp observed that the proliferation of social media has made it difficult for just about anyone, not just Twilight cast members, to maintain privacy. “In the past — in the long past now — actors were able to keep their private lives much more separate,” the filmmaker said. “Now, no one really has a private life. I don’t think it’s just actors. I have teenage sons and they’re of the social media generation. That sort of living out loud is just weird to me. “I can’t understand why you would want so much of yourself revealed to just anyone, because it is inevitably — inevitably — a target of derision. It’s impersonal, but hurtful,” he said. “You see people really get hurt by Facebook attacks. Particularly in the junior high sort of level.” Noting that “Hollywood kind of is junior high,” albeit with more money and drugs, Koepp added: “There’s a lot of pain out there for people who are exposed. I feel very bad for actors in that regard. I think it’s a suckie part of the job and, when people say, Well, you asked for it — no they didn’t. “They asked for a bunch of other stuff and were willing to make a bunch of other sacrifices,” he said. “Just because you’re in the public eye doesn’t mean that you agree that there will be a complete abrogation of decency.” Nell Alk is an arts and entertainment writer and reporter based in New York City. Nas let us know life is real good right now. And a week before his final show at Rock the Bells, he answered a few questions we’ve all been wanting answers to…mainly, “How did Kelis feel about the cover of his Life Is Good album? You’re preparing to hit the Rock the Bells stage. Why are there only a few hip-hop branded festivals out there? Hip-hop brings out America’s youth in ways that scares America’s adults. So when you pack a city or place with those kinds of fans, people get nervous. That’s one reason. Another reason, hip hop is raw, it’s a raw genre. It’s not so shiny, no matter how many chains people wear. It’s still a real streets thing. It has not yet reached the Rolling Stones touring levels like rock ‘n’ roll has. It’s still the word of mouth, did-you-hear-this-song-last-night small crowd that embraces each artist one at a time. We like to own it before it becomes commercial. When it becomes commercial, the core hip-hop fan tends to walk away from it. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in the last two years? No matter what, everything will be alright. A lot of people are scared of failure. A lot of people are scared of love and being hurt. A lot of people are scared of taking chances. No matter what, everything will be fine. Was there ever a time you felt even your fans didn’t understand what you were trying to convey in your music? A lot of times. But you never get off your path. Even when I’m doing stuff that I feel isn’t really good, when I feel like it’s off or bad, those are my moments I go back to — my human moments — where I say I was really just a human there, I wasn’t great there, I was just me. That is a great thing to see and feel. Like, ‘Hey, look at me at that point.’ Yeah, people weren’t feeling it, but I was naturally me. What did having Amy Winehouse on the record mean to you? Having Amy on my record … it grew into a different thing. It wasn’t just your typical rap album because she blessed it. It was serendipitous. She was an angel. She is an angel, so she blessed that entire project with just that one song. That was just God. I think God makes things happen that we can’t explain sometimes. She was a gift, a pure artist. I give that to God. Your “Behind the Music” revealed so much about your personal life and your divorce. How hard was it to convince you to do it? Because the media covered it so much — some true stuff, some false — everyone was telling my story for me. Everyone except me. I didn’t want to do “Behind the Music,” and I found out my people told them they can start it and they had already started the production. It took some persuading, but I agreed for a couple of things: It’s not the end of the world to tell your story, and it doesn’t mean anything other than you telling your story. It was hard for me because I was never that kind of guy. I can make music about it all day long but to sit down with you, other than a quick interview, for an in-depth thing … it was out of question. This was the most I’ve ever done as far as telling my story. But I’ll tell you like this, if you can last as long as I’ve lasted so far, there’s nothing wrong with reintroducing yourself to fans and listeners. There are so many artists that come out all the time that could be forgotten or not be appreciated. And these are important stories, and I thought it was cool to let people inside. The “Life Is Good” cover got plenty of ink. What did Kelis think of it? She wanted to know exactly … she wanted to hear from me what it meant. I told her, basically it’s life. It’s wins, it’s losses, but life goes on. And this is a part of my life, a part of her life and she was a part of my life. It’s my story. And I wanted to do this in a way to open up hip-hop music in a way it probably hadn’t been opened up before as far as an artist getting into a personal situation. This particular story has never really been done [in hop hop]. I said this is fresh, this is new, and she really appreciates it and loved the concept. She thought it was pretty dope. You said you didn’t think you’d last this long in the business. Is there something in particular that made you think that? One of the reasons is, man, how [messed up] the business was in the ’80s when great acts like Public Enemy, De La Soul, NWA, and Tribe were around. The record business was a lot worse. My generation benefited from their losses or from their sacrifices … and realize the torch they had in their hands was supposed to stay lit. For me that’s important. My ego is not as big as hip-hop is. Hip-hop comes before Nas. A lot of these guys have egos, and that’s a character flaw, it’s one of the ugliest character flaws … an artist with ego. If Hip-Hop of late has been messed up, we’re hyped to hear Nas is stayin’ in the game and driven. Source Images via Twitter/WENN
Darla Moore, who was invited to join the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club this week along with Condoleezza Rice, is a heavy hitter in her own right. In fact, Fortune once dubbed her the Toughest Babe in Business. In the ’90s, Moore found love, a new career and a reputation in the financial industry by running the portfolio of her billionaire husband, Richard Rainwater. “Don’t mess with Darla,” said Rainwater, who let his glamorous other half chop CEO heads and do his dirty work – to the tune of immense profits. Making history as a pioneer for women’s equality was Moore’s goal, but in a way, she became one when she and Rice became Augusta’s first female members . Since leaving the world of finance, Moore has left a major mark in philanthropy in her native South Carolina, giving over $70 million to the state university. Now 58, she has directed time and big money to try to find a cure for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), the rare brain disease that afflicts Rainwater.
Remember when we asked if Kristen Stewart was bring treated unfairly by the media and the public? Consider this a case in point: Online retailer Skreened is attempting to capitalize off the actress’ affair with Rupert Sanders by selling a number of anti-Kristen Stewart t-shirts. Really anti-Kristen Stewart t-shirts, like one that reads Kristen Stewart is a Trampire and another that simply says: F*** Kristen Stewart . The collection is causing some controversy across the Internet, with one side thinking Stewart deserves all criticism and mockery coming her way, considering her actions against Robert Pattinson . And another side stopping to ask: Wait a minute, this is a 22-year old girl. Is such overt bashing really a good idea? Which side do YOU fall on? What do you think of these Kristen Stewart pieces of apparel?

Rihanna tearfully opens up to Oprah Winfrey about the night that forever changed the course of the conversation around her career. In the interview, set to air Sunday on OWN, Rihanna addresses her feelings about the night Chris Brown assaulted her in 2009. In the midst of the media circus and the fallout from the assault, Rihanna said Brown’s emotional safety was still on her mind. “I felt protective,” she admits. “I felt like, ‘The only person they hate right now is him.’ It was a weird, confusing space to be in. Because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help, and who’s going to help him? Nobody’s going to say he needs help. Everybody’s going to say he’s a monster without looking at the source, and I was more concerned about him.” There’s a lot of things to feel after you get a beat down, but ‘concerned’ and ‘protective’ aren’t quite the feelings that come to mind …. Trayvon Martin murder suspect George Zimmerman is nearly broke, his lawyer said on Monday, and plans to ask the public to pay for his defense. “He really has to live as a hermit, unfortunately,” said Mark O’Mara of his client, who is awaiting trial. “He’s not doing well. He’s getting by.” His legal-defense fund, which once hovered around $210,000, is down to $50,000, with $20,000 in outstanding bills and no money coming in . George and his wife, Shellie Zimmerman , are out of work, living in hiding in Seminole County, and spending a ton deal of money on security. “Seminole County is unquestionably the most dangerous county, most expensive county for him to be in,” O’Mara told the media this week. He intends to ask the court to declare George Zimmerman indigent, which would mean that he needs the public to pay for his legal expenses. Zimmerman, again is free on bail, also will ask a judge to let him leave the county. “I want him safe. If he’s out of state, so be it,” O’Mara said. The request to be declared indigent will be awkward, given that he was raking in money this year – and had his bail revoked for not disclosing it. Zimmerman, from his cell at the Seminole County Jail, was directing his wife to move the money from one account to another in $9,990 chunks. Presumably, this was done to appear broke and qualify for a lower bond amount; in any case, O’Mara claimed he never knew about those funds. In any case, Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder for killing Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teen. Zimmerman says he acted in self-defense, that the 17-year-old punched him and broke his nose, then got on top of him, threatening his life. But prosecutors allege Zimmerman is guilty of racial profiling, spotting the African-American teen, suspiciously following him, then killing him. Investigators say he missed opportunities to diffuse tension , though he has pleaded not guilty on all charges. His trial will be closely watched. Zimmerman apologized to Trayvon Martin’s parents at his first bail hearing and a second time in an interview on Fox News last month.
